Home: The Toast

Aries: When your body feels too solid on the ground, when gravity’s pull feels too strong, think of the clear morning sky. Think of a long quiet river; think of the cold salty sea. Think of all the places your thoughts can carry you, when your days feel like too much. There are ways to make the world light again. There are ways to make the world bearable. There’s a magic inside you that will allow you to survive nearly anything, a magic that glows, and that might not make sense, and that won’t go away.

Taurus: It can feel overwhelming, sometimes, to think of the constant motion in your brain and your body, so full of effort and desire and dreams. Let yourself rest this month, when you need to. Even when you’re resting, blood will keep moving through your veins. Air will keep moving through your lungs. Give yourself some credit for all the living you do every day. The quiet trees on your street grow and reach for the sun, and so do you. Even in winter, the earth stays alive and so do you.

Gemini: Listen: you’re not often wrong about things, but let yourself be, once in awhile. You can be bold, and you can be loud, and you can be brave, and you can be wrong. You’re big enough to surprise your own self, and the world’s big enough to let you grow. Let this month feel like a window opening into sunlight. Let this month taste like a glass of sweet cold water. Let this month sound like the rain, like a song, like a bell. There’s so much joy waiting for you.

Cancer: This is a month for caring for other people, for listening to their songs and their sorrows, for letting your heart beat warm and true. Still, you don’t have to give up your own fully self, and you don’t have to give up your bright voice, and you don’t have to give up your own reasons for living. Look at your own hands. Feel your own face and your skin and your teeth. There is more than one way to live a good life. You belong to yourself and you don’t have to be afraid.

Leo: It’s not bad to give in to the softer parts of yourself sometimes, not bad to let your own tenderness out to breathe. There are things inside of you that defy logic. There are things inside of you that exist for no other reason than your own joy, for no other reason than to exist. This, too, is a purpose. You can watch the stars in the soft blue night, you can eat a strawberry, you can take a bath. You can call your best friend and laugh and laugh. You can listen to songs about love.

Virgo: Some kinds of freedom feel like highways and some feel like storms and some feel like a forest, quiet and green. Some feel like running away, some feel like an anchor to your own warm center. Try, this month, to remember what you really need, what makes you most alive. Living a life in this strange tangled world can be a heavy task, but you’re allowed to reach for goodness. You’re allowed to reach for joy. Your life belongs to you, and there’s so much that you can do.

Libra: This is a month to let yourself live a messy life. You don’t need to look for your life’s patterns right now. You don’t need to look for its smooth straight edges. There are things that belong to you and things that don’t. There are desires that make sense and desires that don’t. Some things will never be simple, and this is okay. You can tell the truth even when you don’t yet know what it means. You can turn your music up as loud as you want it.

Scorpio: This is a month for new feelings, for strange feelings, for the feeling of getting outside of yourself. You’re free to be weirder than you think you are, and you’re free to be better. You’re free to act in ways that don’t make sense, free to move in ways that make your muscles feel new. It is a blessing and it is a gift, to sometimes be wrong about your own self. Watch the sky go pink at night. Your heart is bigger than you think, and the world is even bigger than that.

Sagittarius: Look out the window when you’re dreaming and you’ll see cliffs rising out of the sea, or you’ll see clouds moving slowly above you, or you’ll see wide green plains, and wonder how you got here. And it’s okay to look back over your shoulder, here, but the path you came on keeps shifting, and you’re only one person and there’s only so much you can know. There’s knowledge and there’s love stored in your body, and there are forests and caves and canyons outside of you, and these are your gifts.

Capricorn: Think: there are so many different ways to look at the world, some of them sparkling, some of them strange, some of them quiet as dirt. And the vision of the world that you’ve created is strong and it’s good, but it’s not the only one. It takes courage, but there’s more than one way you can live. If you’re tired and need a break, there is another one. Of if your eyes go blurry, there’s another one. Or if the sun shines hot in your face, there’s another one. You aren’t stuck.

Aquarius: This month, listen to the songs that stick themselves in your head. Listen to your stomach when it growls. There are things that your own body can tell you that you won’t learn anywhere else, and sometimes these things will sting like salt, and sometimes they’ll haunt you through long afternoons, and sometimes they’ll feel like pure joy. Think of how strange it is to exist on this earth, all strong and solid. Think of how strange it is to be this good, this real, this whole.

Pisces: You don’t have to dress in armor, and you don’t have to tear your own heart out of your chest, and you don’t always need to know what you want. You don’t need to look into the future, though if you’re brave you can try. There are things that need solving, and things that just take a long time. There are dreams in your head, and there is a roof over you, and there is a sky over that. Even this loneliness can come to an end.
