I LITERALLY bought the series box set like TWO WEEKS AGO after waiting and waiting and waiting for years for it to go to streaming.
Now it’s kind of obvious that the crazy Amazon deal may have happened because they were trying to get rid of stock before the whole series became available online?? UGHHHHH
Comfort yourself with the fact that when some complicated backroom corporate deal yanks it from streaming again (and it will), you’ll still have your box set.
I am terrified of this happening with 30 Rock.
ME TOO – bought it over the summer, to watch on my maternity leave. I won’t even be able to resell it at a decent price now, DAMN YOU NETFLIX.
The box set has commentary tracks that you can’t get on streaming. Which doesn’t mean I’m not stoked for the streaming deal despite having owned the box set for years, but when it gets yanked from streaming (as Elsa said), you will be glad of those DVDs.
I am both very excited and terrified that my mom and I will re-watch the series and find it wanting.
Also, between this show and Castle are two depictions of single parent-daughter relationships with varying degrees of approval for each character’s SOs. Both Rory and Alexis have never good enough BFs — I really found them all insufferable, except for the Naked Guy that Rory found in her Yale dorm, but I don’t think Rory ever liked him anyway. Meanwhile, Castle and Lorelei get together with their “soul mates” which were kind of setup as endgame for both anyway.

I DEEPLY identified with Rory at the time (I was a little younger but not far from her age, very bookish, very close with my mom) and haven’t really watched GG again since – it’ll be interesting to see if I feel differently about it now…

I had never watched it until last year, and I was happy as a clam (and over 30)
I just watched that episode where Marty was at a party for his girlfriend Krysten Ritter and Rory was like “let’s not make this awkward, we were just friends let’s be friends again” and Marty was like “YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL I LOVE YOU” and Rory was like “ew” and then he made out with Krysten Ritter and MARTY WAS THE WORST I’m sorry.
I’ve rewatched a lot of it, and it has definitely stood the test of time!

My ex saw the town selectman of Stars Hollow in an antique shop wearing a straw hat one time and could not wait to tell me about it, he thought I would be impressed as hell even though he knew I hate that guy. And I was.
I once saw a pre-Bridesmaids Melissa McCarthy (Sookie St. James) coming out of a cookbook store in Los Angeles. It was all I talked about for like a week afterwards.
Aside from maybe a B&B or, like, a field of vegetables, that is the best possible location for a Sookie sighting.

When Bridesmaids came out and everyone was gushing over Melissa McCarthy I was just like “um, yes, we knew she was fantastic, haven’t any of you ever seen Gilmore Girls?”
A good friend of my WORKED ON THE SHOW for the first few seasons! I met her long after she’d quit, so never got the chance to use my connections for any fangirling purposes, but she does occasionally share stories of her time on set. (I actually don’t like hearing stories, though, because a) I want to pretend Stars Hollow is real and b) I don’t want to hear anything negative about the cast/crew/etc.)

I was SUCH a Jesse apologist back in the day, and I DEEPLY regret it now. Rory’s boyfriends are all scummy.
I’m a mild apologist for Jesse but only because he’s better than the rest of the boyfriends which is a very low bar to meet.
I just liked the fact that Jess was allowed to grow up and mature a little bit. He wasn’t a great boyfriend for Rory (uuuuunderstatement), but when he came back in season 6 or 7, whenever it was, to drop some truth bombs on Rory about how she was letting her life stagnate and wasting her time by dropping out of school and putting too much stock in what Logan’s idiot dad had to say and all that stuff… he basically said everything I’d been wanting to scream at her that season. And then he walked into the sunset like “peace out” and opened a bookstore and did something useful with himself.
Meanwhile her other boyfriends all were just varying levels of useless bags of smugliness, so.
Wait, what do you mean “talk smack about Jess?” Jess [reformed, later seasons] is clearly the best option (though not the best man. None of Rory’s boyfriends were quite good enough). Logan is the worst. Dean is merely a sack of protein, incapable of human emotion or thought.

I have the opposite reaction — I cannot enjoy Cary because all I can see is Horrible Jerk Logan.
Jess and Logan are basically the same person, and I can imagine Logan also becoming a decent if fiscally conservative adult. Both have had serious stuff to work out with their fathers, both have their brilliant moments, but neither are worth it.
I am so excited about this that I may actually make a new netflix account! (I cancelled mine out of spite a few months ago when I realized that my ex was using MY account more than I was, and messing up my recommendations.)
For future ref you can change your password and then select “sign out of all other devices,” booting all the unwanted Netflix moochers off your account forever. I know from personal experience that it feels great 🙂

Ironically, as someone who has written about Gilmore Girls for the Toast before, I also STRONGLY DISAGREE with the Official Toast Stance re: Jess Mariano, as he is incredibly dear to me and ALSO perfect for Rory, especially once he’s grown up and come back all sensible.

Older Jess could have been a good match for Rory, had he not already ruined it when they were together. As it is, he might have become a good partner for someone similar to Rory, but not Rory.
Somehow I missed your Gilmore Girls piece when it came out so I just went back and read it and it is PERFECT. I identified more with Rory when I was first watching the show (I’m four years younger than her) but I’ve been watching the show basically on continuous repeat since it started airing and as time went on it became Lorelai that I adored most. The greatest compliment I ever got was when one of my roommates in college (a fellow GG fan) told me I reminded her of Lorelai.
(I also share your Jess stance, but I’m willing to admit a lot of my affection for him might be based on that sprinkler scene, which might’ve been my one true coming of age moment.)
I watched SO MANY Gilmore Girls reruns in high school, but I didn’t start watching it as it was airing until college. (by this point the show was in “Rory steals a boat” territory.) My friends and I watched it as a group every week freshman year, and I have very fond memories of one of the guys summoning us by yelling “GILMOOOOOOOOOOOORE!” down the hallway.

I was SO conflicted when Supernatural started, because Jared Padalecki was on it and his character was…likeable? And had a personality and was pretty smart (at least at first) and I just didn’t know what to think about that.
I just get confused when I see gifs of supernatural and they’re captioned “Sam and Dean yada yada.” and I think “did you really name Jared Padalecki’s character Dean *again?*”
And they DIDN’T, is the thing. The other one is Dean. Jared is Sam. It took me a season and a half to not be confused as hell. *quietly slinks back into my Supernatural-loving hole*

This list drives me crazy, because it keeps coming back as “what Rory read” and that’s not what it is. Some of these are books Rory was seen reading. Some of them are books she referenced. Some of them are movies she referenced. Some of them are things Lorelai read or referenced. A fair few are from a thing The WB had on their website called “Rory’s Book Club” where they recommended one classic novel and one contemporary novel every month (I read a lot of great books that way, like The God of Small Things, but it was marketing more than anything). It’s a great (mistitled) list, though.

I stopped watching after Sookie had an unplanned, unwanted, pregnancy (as a result of her husband SAYING HE’D GET A VASECTOMY and then NOT and NOT TELLING HER) and didn’t get an abortion and then also Lane had an unplanned, unwanted pregnancy (as a result of having sex on her honeymoon that she SHOULDN’T HAVE HAD because WHY DID SHE GET MARRIED) and then also didn’t get an abortion.

I agree but need to add one qualification: I liked that Paris got into the medical school of her dreams while Rory didn’t get the internship she wanted. Everyone always gave Rory everything she wanted without even asking for it while Paris, who worked just as hard, never got anything.

I feel you on the whole Jackson thing (that was Not OK and in fact a pretty unforgivable thing for a man to do to his wife), but I have to say, I don’t think Lane not getting an abortion was out of character, necessarily.
Firstly, I find the bit about her thinking sex is terrible to be hilarious but also really points to the fact that when you don’t have good sex ed (and even sometimes when you do), you’re going to have some lousy sex before you get good at it, especially if the first time you do it you try to make it some big romantic thing you saw in a movie. The first time you have sex should ideally be in a comfy bed with high-quailty sheets, but it DEFINITELY shouldn’t be on the beach. Secondly, it is established that Lane has absorbed enough of her mother’s values to not be willing to have sex outside of marriage. I find it hard to believe that “don’t have sex till your married” would have sunk in, but not “don’t have an abortion”, and I’m PRETTY sure that Mrs. Kim would not have been pro-choice. (That said, she could have used birth control, and the “we had a terrible honeymoon” story could have been “turns out Zach is allergic to latex, so after that first time on the beach it was a no-go, not that I would have wanted to anyway”)
I think that you’re definitely right and Lane wouldn’t have gotten an abortion. I think that I would have been so much more happy if just the option had been brought up for one or both of them, if Rory had said to Lane “man unexpected honeymoon twins kind of sucks, have you thought about getting an abortion” and Lane did give it a long hard thought and in the end decided to keep the babies. It really bothered me that both women were pretty firm about not wanting to be pregnant (especially Sookie!) and then once they were they just kind of accepted it like ‘oh ok things happen’ and not like ‘I have agency over my body and I can decide if I want to go forward with this or not.’
The actress who played Luke’s daughter was in another show and I couldn’t keep myself from hating her. That storyline aghhh still bitter.
The worst thing about the “Luke’s secret kid” storyline was that the kid, surprisingly, wasn’t the worst. It’s just that absolutely EVERYONE dealt with her existence in the STUPIDEST way possible.

She’s on Switched at Birth. She was insufferable at first, but has actually become the most nuanced, interesting character on that show.
That’s good! I thought she was a pretty strong actress as April, given the atrocious material she had to work with.

I am still sad that we will never know the last four words Amy Sherman Palladino had planned since like season 4. And I’ll never forgive her for writing Lorelei sleeping with Christopher as the last episode she wrote before leaving that show. I get that she was upset with the network but it seemed like a big Fuck You to the fans.
I’m clinging to hope there will be a movie someday. Mind you, if the movie is “Luke and Lorelai have a child but they don’t love that child half as much as they do Rory” it would be better if they don’t. (Seriously, delaying Christmas for four-year-old for the sake of your 21 year old? What the hell was that?)
Every boy she liked was horrible. HORRIBLE. Dean was a lump of nothing, Jess was a jerk, Logan was creepy and smug. I hate them all so much.

I had such strong feelings toward this show when I was younger. I identified with Rory, but more than that, I wanted to move to Stars Hollow. Between the Gilmore Girls and Murder She Wrote, I always assumed that I was going to run away someday to live in a little coastal eastern seaboard town (which has not yet happened but maybe just might?). It was a wonderful distraction from Los Angeles.
I’m both excited and a little nervous about watching it all again…though I never really got invested in the college years and sort of lost track. I was surprised that she, I think she stole a boat?
Also, the dean song begins with the lines “build me a car” which has made me grin immensely.
Despite being such a small town, Stars Hollow always had some kind of cool (and often elaborate) event going on.
Right? For me it became the ur-text of charming little college towns (though there’s no actual college around?) I have a strong and specific yearning for the movie theater that’s also kind of a living room but also still a public venue to be a real place that I can go see movies in.

I am sad that GIlmore Girls is not coming to Canadian Netflix. I mean I have the DVDs, but then I have to change discs and keep track of where i left off! I was the same age as Rory when Gilmore Girls came out and I have a deep affection for this show.
My ranking of Rory’s terrible boyfriends has changed after a few years though. Jess used to be my most hated Rory boyfriend, but has upgraded to least hated. Dean was somehow least hated Rory boyfriend because I some how did not realize what mentally abusive piece of crap he was. Dean is the worst now, obvs

I was one year younger than Rory when the show started. I didn’t love it right away, but my sister got me hooked. I own the first 3 seasons and watch them regularly, but I have a serious mental and emotional block about the Rory College Years that I can’t get past. I kinda sorta watched the 4th season in real time, but remember very little about it. About a year ago, I took the 4th season out of the library and it literally made me anxious to think about watching it. Just knowing all the stupid shit Rory does, and the fight between Rory and Lorelai, and Emily & Richard’s divorce, etc. I could not bring myself to watch it. It went back to the library and taunts me every time I see it on the shelf.
I just can’t help but to roll my eyes in disgust every time I think of Jess and his self-obsessed, teenie-angst, no-one-gets-me antics. ‘Yeah, Rory, I guess you’re so basic that you need good grades to prove you’re smart, but I’m actually a genius who sneers at your conventional measures of success. Plus whatever I’m reading is about a million times more alternative than you.’ He is a wretch.

Rory/Logan shippers are their same people who ship Veronica Mars/Logan Echolls and Buffy/Spike.

I am definitely a Veronica Mars/Logan Echolls, and a Buffy/Spike, but also much prefer Rory/Jess. I don’t know, man. I don’t know.
I’m with you here. I’ve always kind of assumed the people that ‘ship Rory/Logan were also the Veronica/Duncan and Buffy/Angel folks.
I like Logan the best of all the boyfriends, but I don’t necessarily ship Rory/Logan.
Veronica/Logan is intensely dysfunctional, but the actors have such great chemistry together, and Logan at least has an intensity to match Veronica (Pizz is a better person and a better boyfriend, but I’m not sure he can really stand up to her when necessary). (Also now I want the Veronica/Mac femmeslash)
I ship Buffy/Spike purely for the hot sex. Angel is too broody (and, you know, too old), and Riley is too Riley (I don’t hate him as much as most people do, but there isn’t a lot of chemistry there, and again, not really strong enough to stand up to her). I wouldn’t consider any of the canon pairings on the show to be my OTP for Buffy.

One of the main reasons I have NEVER understood Jess fans is because of how consistently rude and unmindful he is of Lorelai. This is the MOST IMPORTANT person in the world to the woman he claims to love, and he consistently treats her like garbage (even when she tries to be nice!) or forgets she exists (asking Rory to run away with him.)
If the “perfect guy” only cares about the stuff you love that you have in common (ie FUCKING BUKOWSKI UGH) and dismisses everything else out of hand, that’s not playful banter. That’s not “fire and ice”. That’s a sesame-coated douchebag roll with extra crunch.
Logan would be the perfect man if he was never permitted to speak or really do anything except maybe paint my toenails. Luke acts like a furious medieval yeoman who’s woken up in the present and has no idea how to behave. Lorelai and Rory are the worst (I know you’re supposed to think that Lorelai is plucky and ersatz working class, but she really isn’t. She’s playing at lack of privilege like Marie Antoinette on her farm). Sookie, Paris, Emily Gilmore and Richard Gilmore are the best. And the Lane pregnancy business is a pretty prime example of that cute narrative trick where all bad stuff happens to the non white best pal so there can be some conflict but without anything really nasty happening to Rory.
Having said all this, Gilmore Girls is probably one of my favourite ever shows. I think it’s Emily.
Am I the only one who doesn’t hate Logan? I understand that he did bad things and was not great for Rory, but Logan appeals to the part of me that Christian Grey/Edward Cullen appeals to in other women. He is ridiculously charming and good-looking and stupidly rich and I would like him to buy me dresses and let me borrow his car and driver and call me Ace.
I just liked the fact that Jess was allowed to grow up and mature a little bit. He wasn't a great boyfriend for Rory (uuuuunderstatement), but when he came back in season 6 or 7, whenever it was, to drop some truth bombs on Rory about how she was letting her life stagnate and wasting her time by dropping out of school and putting too much stock in what Logan's idiot dad had to say and all that stuff… he basically said everything I'd been wanting to scream at her that season. And then he walked into the sunset like "peace out" and opened a bookstore and did something useful with himself.
Meanwhile her other boyfriends all were just varying levels of useless bags of smugliness, so.

I'm with you here. I've always kind of assumed the people that 'ship Rory/Logan were also the Veronica/Duncan and Buffy/Angel folks.
Christopher wasn't really a reasonable alternative to Luke. Yes, he did sort of get his shit together eventually, but he abandoned Lorelai TWICE, he was an absentee father to Rory, and he was way too easily manipulated by Emily's nonsense.
The only alternative to Luke I can accept is Max Medina.
I don't find him to be insufferable, but as I get older I find that my tolerance for the antics and poor life choices of teens/college kids is less. But my fondness for him might be the result of too much exposure to the Prince Charming trope as a child.
I think I've been overruled. Fine, Christopher wasn't really reasonable, but he was pretty hot. He tried to rewrite his history with Rory by being all Father Figure with Gigi, which wasn't super nice for Rory, but warmed my heart.

Christopher was VERY nice to look at, and, as I said, he did definitely try to get his act together as he got older. I think he bought into the fantasy of being with Lorelai and finally having their family together in the same way that I am sure a younger Rory wished that Lorelai and Christopher would end up together. It's a very neat ending for them, and very romantic for them to find their way back to each other after they've both grown up a bit, so I understand why it appeals. I didn't hate Christopher the way some people do, but Lorelai did not seem happy when she was with him.
Jess is the best. He was a total dick when he was dating Rory, but after his soul-searching crap when he’s mature and has written a book and works for a small press…. SWOON.
I liked Logan when he was jumping off the tower with Rory, and when they got together at Richard and Emily’s vow renewal. Then approximately never again, even though the “Ace” nickname was my favorite. He will never live up to Jess. Jess is top.
Dean is boring and sad. I feel sorry for Dean and his boring, sad life. Meet someone nice and live a boring, happy life, Dean! Move somewhere you won’t see Rory anymore.
I think that you're definitely right and Lane wouldn't have gotten an abortion. I think that I would have been so much more happy if just the option had been brought up for one or both of them, if Rory had said to Lane "man unexpected honeymoon twins kind of sucks, have you thought about getting an abortion" and Lane did give it a long hard thought and in the end decided to keep the babies. It really bothered me that both women were pretty firm about not wanting to be pregnant (especially Sookie!) and then once they were they just kind of accepted it like 'oh ok things happen' and not like 'I have agency over my body and I can decide if I want to go forward with this or not.'
I am watching daily on ABC Family and it’s practically a different show! I still love it, but April is not as bad as I remember (though Anna is) and Chris isn’t as bad as I remembered (though so wrong for Lorelai) and I actually like Logan a lot this time. I am also liking Lorelai less (she’s not much more mature than Chris a lot of the time) and Rory more. Also, this time, I felt like Luke loved Lorelai more than she did him, or at least she didn’t realize how much she loved him until he was gone. I’m still sad for poor Lane, who did not deserve the story she got, and Dean isn’t even worth mentioning. I still can’t make up my mind on Jess – decent guy, once he started to grow up, but not my favorite. Sookie, Jackson and Richard are my favorites.
