Oh, my God, you guys, this week. Have you ever woken up at two in the morning because the light in the bathroom went on and you didn’t think anybody else was in your part of the house? You spend so much of your adult life trying to tamp down those fears – don’t be ridiculous, go to sleep, of course there’s no one in the house with you who’s not supposed to be — EXCEPT FOR THIS TIME THERE WAS AND IT WAS AWFUL.
I am making Nicole take me to Mimi’s in order to soften my heart towards her once again. Then I am going to go on vacation for a WHOLE WEEK and not even look at the site or my email or maybe even Twitter, just drive around the dang American West with my grandmother and it’s going to be flippin’ dipsicles. I’m so excited that Jaya and Matt are going to be here while I’m gone, please bombard them with requests for cat pictures and outlandish sketches of the jokes you make in the comments.

Many years ago now, we went to visit friends in VT who had just gotten a new cat. Their daughter, who was then around 4 or 5, showed off this new family member by carrying it by one hind leg and saying, “Look at our new kitty!” That cat’s expression was almost exactly the same as Matt’s cat above.

I had for some reason not read Dirtbag Romeo & Juliet until now. And it was good!
But also I was heartened by the “John Green, meh,” thread in the comments, because I know some folks who are very “John Green, w00t!” and I tried the Kindle preview for one of his books and definitely found it meh, and I guess I was secretly kind of worried that maybe I was missing something.
I read my first John Green book a few weeks ago (Looking for whatever-her-name-was), and I liked it pretty well. But I’m about 3 times the age of a young-adult audience member, so.
That was the one I looked at the preview for!
I think part of the problem was that it was starting very slowly, and of course I only had the start to read, so I got to the end of the preview and nothing much had happened. I might still have paid money to continue reading if I’d found it engaging, but I didn’t really.
Plus there kept being bits where the main character angsted about something and then it was immediately fixed. He worried that he didn’t know anyone, and then his new roommate showed up, introduced himself, and dragged the main character to be introduced to other people. Next he worried that girls wouldn’t notice him, and then the prettiest girl he’d ever met showed up randomly to have a deep conversation with him. Neither of these things made any dent in his angst level.
I’m about twice the age of a YA-audience member, as are the John Green readers I know, so I don’t know that age has much to do with it.
yeah i’m definitely going to scour the comments for the best ones and illustrate a few at the end of the week. like a CONTEST.
