If you do not like the things we approve of, we suggest you revisit your stance. You are still allowed to like and/or engage in the things we dis-approve of, you are just wrong. Previous installments can be found here. – Eds.
The Toast Approves of the Following Things:
1. Talking to a spam comment like it’s a real person and being friendly to it.
2. Purely decorative hats on women.
3. Movies where something goes wrong in space.
4. When old British actors say the word “homosexual” but not when anybody else says it.
5. Books and movies about a tense, playful, strained male friendship that only makes sense if you read both characters as being in love with one another.
The Toast Disapproves of the Following Things:
1. Chiropractors when they say anything about medicine that doesn’t relate strictly to manipulating your bones to get that pleasant cracking sensation (yes, we are talking about when they tell people not to get vaccines.)
2. People who change the radio constantly in the car, like, they never let a song finish before flipping elsewhere.
3. People who won’t stop laughing and exclaiming things like “Oh my God!” repeatedly while reading/watching something but won’t say what they’re reacting to even after you’ve said “What is it?” like four times.
4. White shirts that you have to wear some kind of stupid camisole underneath because they are completely sheer.
5. Maraschino cherries.

For number 4 on teh disapprove list, can I also add ‘button-up shirts you have to wear a camisole under because no-one cuts for tits and you can’t button it up all the way’?
what IS that?!
It’s bullshit is what it is.
I have the WORST time with that. Not everyone is an A cup.
I hate button-ups and I won’t wear them.
And the ones that are cut for tits cost like a million dollars.
and they’re usually only available in two designs, which are both ugly.
Wait, where are you even FINDING any that are cut for tits? Like, a DDD? Cause if you know a place that cuts them for like, massive chest but with some waist like… I need to know. So badly.
in the UK at least there is a store called Pepperberry who are attached to the Big Tits underwear specialist Bravissimo. They make things in three or four fittings – curvy, really curvy, super curvy and I think another one – all of which have extra room in the bust. The downside is everything is really expensive and the range is small.
BRB, moving to the UK.
Unless anyone knows of US stores with this kind of sizing scheme? (Pretty please!?)
It looks like they ship internationally, which might (might – I make no guarantees) be cheaper than moving. And, you know, all that trouble of immigrating.
Shockingly, the cheap-ass Kirkland ones from Costco are cut for tits! I just bought two that button neatly over my 30E rack and yet still have a waist.
I wish they were made of a nicer fabric, but at least they fit.
I have found that the thing where you buy for boobs and then have the waist tailored to fit works well, but it makes me cross because the tailoring costs at least half as much as the clothing does.
“4. When old British actors say the word “homosexual” but not when anybody else says it.” Can we revise this to say “When Sir Ian McKellen says it”?
no because when Peter O’Toole used to say it he basically pronounced it “hahmosexual” and it was so great
I had the same thought!
I also was thinking of Sir Ian McKellen.
I sometimes will listen to my radio on “scan” for……. an embarrassingly long time (an hour?). But never with other people in the car! I am the worst, though.
I do this too. It is very soothing.
I’m not alone!!
You people are weird.
Besides The Great Gatsby & Moby Dick, what other man-lationships meet the criteria of #5? I would like to revisit them.

A SEPARATE PEACE

BRIDESHEAD REVISITED
STAY GOLDEN, PONYBOY
A Separate Peace was the first thing that popped into my head upon reading that. I don’t think I even knew what fanfiction was when I first read that in high school, but I still found myself thinking that there was some untapped slash potential in there.
It’s not even like “slash is fun” with these, it’s like, “the plot literally does not make sense and these characters’ actions are incomprehensible UNLESS you understand that they are in love with each other.”
Wait, was the Charles/Sebastian thing supposed to be between the lines? Big fail Evelyn. Big fail.
The newer adaptation with tiny puppylike Ben Wishaw just reminds me of the Kiss The Girl bit in The Little Mermaid, all longing looks and leaning in that is suddenly interrupted.
Miguel and Tulio from Road to El Dorado, although I am pretty sure they were originally intended to be in love with each other and the studio made them tone it down.
“Merchant of Venice.”
When we read Merchant of Venice in high school, a couple people brought up this idea and the teacher flipped out and told us how wrong we were blah blah blah (Catholic school *eyeroll*). Then I read it again in a college class and yep, still believe it.
Master and Commander – the 2003 Peter Weir movie and ESPECIALLY the 20-book series by Patrick O’Brian. SO GOOD.
I have a question about chiropractors. Is it super common for everyone to think they are useless quacks? Because everyone in my family (my mother, my husband, etc.) seems to think this. I’ve been seeing one that my OB recommended in order to mend my busted butt/sacrum (back problems due to a fall and pregnancy overall), and it seems to be helping, but I’ve been going for about a month, and the chiropractor told me not to lift weights or run until we can get the inflammation down, and my husband is FREAKING OUT because I can’t work out with him now. I would like to work out, but I also don’t want to pay for a treatment and then ignore the dude’s advice in a way that will make my pain worse and make the healing process more slow.
So I guess the question is, is the chiropractor totally full of shit?
I love my chiropractor for her regular adjustments so my neck doesn’t get all stiff and wonky. An adjustment from her has also nipped a migraine or two in the bud. But I don’t take her advice for anything related to sports therapy. A couple years ago I got diagnosed with sciatica and bursitis from my desk job. Three months of treatments and I was still suffering. On a whim/in a fit of pique I attended an introductory CrossFit class where one of the trainers took me aside from the rest of the group and spent forty-five minutes with just me, teaching me how to do a proper squat. Now I only have hip pain flare-ups when I’m *not* doing heavy lower-body workouts. I know this is entirely anecdotal, but…well, you asked? =D
Now I can’t say if your chiropractor is *full* of shit, but it could be that s/he simply isn’t educated/equipped to give recommendations on all aspects of your physiology. Good luck with whatever you decide to do! Back problems are HORRIBLE.
In my opinion based on what I know about the history of chiropractic, what I know about physiology, and how chiropractic claims to work, yes.
My answer gets a lot more hedgy if you ask me whether it might have any healthful effects. I believe chiropractic works through the placebo effect, and I believe there might be ways in which it works that medicine doesn’t quite understand yet. But do I believe that chiropractic does what chiropractors say it does? No, I do not.
AGREE.
And I would add a personal feeling that can best be described as “the willies” when I think of all the people who have been paralyzed by chiropractors.
Yup. One of those stories is the first newspaper article I ever remember reading on my own, so to me, yes, chiropractors are super quacks.
The ‘strokes caused by adjustments’ thing doesn’t actually have good data to support it. I’m a chiropractor who is in favor of vaccines, btw.
There was this theory that twisty adjustments caused tears in neck arteries and lead to strokes. Turns out that model was wrong. Very large retrospective studies have shown that there simply isn’t a correlation between neck adjustments and strokes. Where it gets subtle is that the position your neck is held in just prior to certain styles of adjustments (head back, tilted to shoulder, turned toward shoulder) IS somewhat correlated with increased risk of stroke. Like in hair salon shampoo sinks, or certain martial arts grapple holds, which do have a significant incidence of strokes.
Chiropractors have been taught to adjust in such a way that doesn’t tilt the head back anymore, and have lots of methods that don’t involve rotating the head at all, so the risk of an artery tear, even for those with super high blood pressure, is zero. That said, there is a large section of chiropractors who simply don’t keep up to date on journals and advances in scientific understanding. Those folks might not be hip to the new (20 yrs ago!!!) methods. As I said downthread, their stance on vaccines and good communication with MDs is a benchmark for how science-minded they’ll be.
I asked my sister-in-law about this once (she’s a physical therapist) when I was having neck pain and she basically said that it has it’s limitations, but there are times when going to a chiropractor can be really helpful and that it’s best to go to a medical doctor about whatever your issue is and then let them refer you to a chiropractor or PT or whatever. Which, it sounds like you did, so I’d take the Chiro’s advice and let your husband work out alone for a while. I mean, it sounds like your body’s been through a lot lately, maybe just trust the doctors and take it easy for a while?
Either way, I hope you feel better soon!
they’re indeed bullshit. they’re a placebo effect, and the same benefits could be achieved via massage; being touched and told you’re being healed is a great feeling! but the risks aren’t worth it. the stretching and manipulatiion they do to your neck can, and does, cause stroke! get a massage, see a real doctor, and stay the hell away from these dudes.
Chiropractor (retired) here. I totally agree with the Toast stance, btw.
What doesn’t get said much is that there has been a fragmentation of the profession since about the mid-80’s, between science-minded/ evidence-based chiropractors and the other group who consist of a melting pot of faith healers, Christian Scientists, Scientologists, followers of The Secret, medical professionals from other countries who couldn’t jump through all the hoops to get their MD here, and folks who attended on of the schools who simply don’t teach anything past about 1930’s medical information. Like, in addition to daily prayer, these schools are still mad that MDs used to lose over half their patients to surgery, so therefore no one should ever see an MD. Also that adjustments cure everything, etc. I was very dismayed to discover we don’t do a good job of policing our own.
Short version: it IS possible to find a DC who is a friend of science, and their vaccine stance is a good benchmark by which to discover their position. Another is to ask how nicely they play with MDs.
We talked about this once before in an open thread! everyone thinks they are quacks – but I have had pain relief from seeing one. Maybe it’s a placebo / maybe I dont care. Just be really careful about seeing a good one, who doesn’t paralyze people, I guess?
From what I have heard there is a pretty biiiiiig variety in what chiropractors are like. I think many of the good ones are very useful for many musculoskeletal issues, but I definitely agree with the toast stance on other things. I have not been to one, but I know quite a few people who have had success with them. To me it sounds like the good ones seem to draw from quite a few physiotherapy and massage therapy techniques. Chiropractors are fairly regulated where i live though.
I tend to go by results. I’ve been seeing my chiropractor for 18 years now, she has kept me on my feet! I have never felt worse after a treatment, and have always seen improvement inthe slightly longer term. It’s pretty much common sense not to exercise on an inflamed back though – I’m also going through SI issues at the minute (MRI tomorrow) and my chiropractor (anf my GP, and the rheumatologist they’ve referred me to) all say don’t do anything that makes it hurt.
My lady also does soft tissue massge, ultrasound etc, she’s recognised by my health insurance and they’re happy to pay for me to see her!
So my ASMR trigger (I know, I know) is massage/chiro videos on YouTube. I have never been to a DC, but based on what I see in the videos, there are a bazillion different kinds of chiros. I think KST and Nutrition Response are complete hogwash. Some of the more massage-based modalities seem reasonable to me. But I really doubt you would get results from them that you couldn’t get from a good deep tissue massage or seeing an actual physical therapist.
I haven’t had a ton of luck with chiropractors, but my GP was an osteopath practicing as an MD and she did adjustments on me that were straight up magic.
Oh no. I see what you did there. Maraschino cherries are, along with Canadian Kraft Dinner, the last bastion of the processed-food wars of the 1950s, and I REFUSE TO GIVE THEM UP. Glacee is not the same, because it does not smell LIKE CYANIDE. IE: ALMONDS.
Which are the best. As you know. I am not giving you this point, and I am not giving you a Manhattan without one.
It really is the manhattans that do it. Also working at bars where I basically gnawed my way through the garnish tray. Seconded. 🙁
Or an Old Fashioned! Or a Hemingway Daiquiri! (you can have my maraschino cherries when you pull my bloated corpse from the bathtub full of liquor I plan to spend my last years marinating in)
I agree on Manhattans but Old Fashioneds = NO CHERRIES
You can pry my maraschinos from my cold, sticky rocks glass. Actually pretty easy to do once I’ve fallen asleep from one too many Manhattans. Uh, which might happen with some regularity. Manhattans. They are the best.
Thank you. I got to the bit about Maraschino cherries and immediately got sad at the prospect of Manhattans without them. Sometimes I even put a splash of the bright red juice in mine when I’m feeling extra not-classy.
They’re also frikkin amazing in a pineapple upside down cake. Canned pineapple + maraschino cherries = the most delightfully 1950s dessert ever. Short of gelatin.
Maraschino liquer is fucking incredible though, and does not taste like Maraschino cherries.
God, SO DELICIOUS
Maraschinos Are Important. What else do I put in my bleached flour cakes but bleached cherries? This is not a joke.
ugh they’re SO GOOD at the bottom of the manhattan, when they’re kind of frozen a little and totally rye-soaked? Maraschino cherries forever.
Wait. Is Canadian Kraft Dinner different than American Mac and Cheese? I travel to the States on occasion – eventually this will be important information to have.
Honestly though, why are all shirts see-through now? I feel like an old person, but BACK IN MY DAY, you could purchase a non-sheer shirt. I’m not entirely convinced they exist anymore. Thinking of creating an opaque shirt store on Etsy. Also movies where something goes wrong in space stress me out a lot, but like, in a good way.
I will buy all of your shirts, because seriously. I don’t think I own any non-see-through-tops.
It’s not a great solution for the non-butch, but the kind of men’s t shirts that come in $10 6-packs at Giant Tiger are nice and thick, and stand up quite well when you cut them into tank tops. They wear out in the wash pretty quickly, but then they make nice rags and patches.
they can make them cheaper and charge the same amount and also sell more because you have to layer.
/conspiracy theory
I think you’re on to something! My new life goal is to expose the Sheer Shirt Illuminati for the monsters they are.
The Opague Shirt Store. Yes.
Yeah, because it’s not just white shirts anymore, or shirts that will look good with tank top underneath. I just ordered a cotton “sweater” (I don’t believe in cotton sweaters) online and when it showed up it was so thin you can see my nude bras through it.
Christ, every time I go to TJ Maxx now it’s just rack after rack of see-through shirts and I leave in a muttering rage. I think it’s a scam to make you buy two shirts (one see-through, one opaque to go under it) but if that’s true, where am I supposed to buy the opaque one? WHERE?
I tried to get “on trend” with this whole sheer shirt thing, and have a few bras that are cute enough to be seen through the gauzy haze. I had a whole plan for an evening look in mind.. and NOPE. Could not make it work.
Wait– is the idea that you just wear your bra underneath? D:
Yeah. Not saying it was a great idea. But the ’20 somethings can pull it off, I think.
I almost never wear bras with t-shirts (there’s not much there there, and I hear it helps the reslience of my Cooper’s ligaments? or something? whatever, it’s comfy) so I have a very strong interest in opacity. These brands have been consistently good: Uniqlo, LL Bean, Petit Bateau. The Petit Bateau shirts are kind of expensive, but they are so opaque, I don’t think X-rays could get through them even. Nothing shows, not even under the white ones.
As for non-t-shirts… I got nothing. I own a lot of camisoles, is all I can say. And some bras, I’m not a total monster.
Nice, this is super helpful and very relevant to my interests!
Along those lines, Eddie Bauer also makes non-sheer t-shirts (that last for about a million years, too).
This is it. Those see-through shirts also fall apart faster. They are not meant for washers and dryers.
I have found that J. Crew’s Perfect Fit tees are sturdy and flattering and come in a lot of colors. Just wait until they’re on sale for $15 or so in the clearance section of their website. I’ll be damned if I ever hand wash a t-shirt.
I hate all cherries! I hate how they pop in my mouth! They are all gross.
PS – love cherry flavored things. I also like grapes, but hate all grape flavored things. It’s a mystery.
Grape flavoring tastes super medicinal and not delicious to me. If things just tasted as lovely as like, fresh super cold green grapes, it would be awesome.
I sincerely believe “grape flavor” has nothing to do with grapes and I refuse to even allude to the existence of a fruit when the artificial flavor is involved. Instead, I refer to this monstrosity as “Purple flavor” and it is THE WORST.
I feel the same about “blueberry flavor”
Blueberry flavor is THE WORST THING EVER.
A mystery? Dear gods, a heresy. Who doesn’t like popping cherries?
It’s obvious neither of you have graduated from the Alex Balk School Of Putting At Least One Egregiously Wrong Thing On Every List So People Will Talk About It. Who could argue with these stances??
I, I shall argue against the dictum against maraschino cherries. The are disgusting plain, and yet are the foundation of TWO indispensable Christmas cookie recipes. There is a 48 oz. jar in my refrigerator this very moment.
You are egregiously wrong about there not being at least one egregiously wrong thing on this list, and I WILL ARGUE WITH YOU*.
*If it will make you happy, and possibly even if it won’t.
3. People who won’t stop laughing and exclaiming things like “Oh my God!” repeatedly while reading/watching something but won’t say what they’re reacting to even after you’ve said “What is it?” like four times.
My boyfriend does this, it is EXASPERATING.
I’d like to propose an amendment to include people who painstakingly explain tv shows to you when you have expressed repeatedly that you aren’t interested. Yup, you don’t need to explain their motivation, character flaws, and story arcs to me – I’m stillllll not going to watch it.
Oh god! Downton Abbey. If I ever. Shoot me.
I do it all the time, but am more than happy to explain what made me LOL/OMGOL to anyone who inquires. It’s just that most of the time I am met with a blank stare when I try to explain, “oh it’s this website called the toast and this writer who writes the creepiest/weird/strangely affecting things. Here, read it.” and all i get is an O_o in response.
I HEART how Brits say homosexual… “homoseks-ewe-uhl”

Movies where something goes wrong in space are simultaneously addictive and horrifying to me. I am so so so so so so so scared of space…but I can’t stop watching those movies. They’re so bad for me. So basically, they are maraschino cherries.
the great thing about outer space is that it is relatively easy to avoid in your daily travels
SOME DAY IT MIGHT NOT BE
#3 on the approved list does not include Gravity, right, right?? I can complain about that movie forever. Like, astronauts wear booty shorts underneath their astronaut suit? Hhahahah, no.
I had no problem with the booty shorts.
We are in complete accord on that point.
yeah I guess that was a silly thing to say on the Toast’s weekly Lesbian Friday!
The shorts were not my major problem with the movie. The fact that the characters were so thin you could see through them was my problem.
Oh god, I am totally #2 on the Disapprove list. It is honestly a wonder that my husband hasn’t tossed me out of the car yet. My kid yells TURN IT BACK at me all the time now.
Last Drynuary I was drinking a lot of soda water with maraschino cherries, and one night at the bar I found a PIT in my MARASCHINO CHERRY.
And a little angel got her wings.
FUCK YOU MARASCHINO CHERRIES!! My husband gets migraines from red food coloring (specifically red 40) and basically that’s all maraschino cherries are made of. We have to act like dicks every time we go to a bar, saying “and no cherries in that!” even if it’s a drink one wouldn’t normally put a cherry in because some bartenders don’t care and will put a cherry in anything.
I get through movies about Things Going Wrong in Space by pretending I am a person on a far-away planet (possibly Beta Colony or Barrayar, because Lois McMaster Bujold’s space-colonizing future is the best space-colonizing future)*, a few hundred years in the future, watching fascinating historical documents about our ancestors making their first steps into space.
*Unsubtle attempt to find other Bujold-loving Toasties.
Don’t pretend to be on Barrayar! Pretend to be on THE ENTIRE PLANET OF MISANDRISTS THAT YOU KNOW IS OUT THERE SOMEWHERE AS ATHOS’S SPIRITUAL COUNTERPART.
That way you can also laugh about how all the problems were caused by this curious insistence on believing men were competent to do anything at all.
Well, now I need to read this fic.
Can they keep the requirement that mothers/ copartners grow facial hair?
BUJOLD-LOVING TOASTIES ARE HERE. Also, I absolutely want a book about a planet of misandrists. I propose that Mallory and Bujold team up.
I THINK LMB WOULD TOTALLY BE DOWN FOR THAT.
Support, obviously, but would be very said if that means I don’t get to see more Ivan soon. And Koudelkas.
Clearly Ivan needs to be stranded on the planet of the misandrists! Or possibly sent there on a diplomatic mission. It will probably be Miles’ fault, and he will be cackling gleefully from the safety of Barrayar for the course of the entire novel. One or more of the Koudelkas can come along on the diplomatic mission and make friends with ALL the planet and mock Ivan endlessly. And Cordelia, Alys, and Illyan can sit on the beach drinking cocktails with little umbrellas in them, providing commentary on all of Ivan’s misadventures and awarding points for the Koudelkas’ antics from afar.
Oh you’re right, the Koudelka girls could RULE that planet.
Of course, a misandrist planet wouldn’t have to depend on aging and fallible male sperm, so I would also accept a mention of how that sector has been getting by just fine without anyone else, thank you very much. Or maybe they’re the source of the next big uterine replicator innovation?
I think Elena and Baz could end up there in the course of some commercial ship run. And run into Ivan? It’s unclear to me that men would be allowed downside, though; they might all be trapped up on a transfer station, trying to direct the Koudelkas at a distance and getting ignored.
You rang?
Is this where I can recommend my favorite fanfiction ever, a Harry Potter (Neville/Draco) / Vorkosigan crossover? I know, it sounds absurd, but really. http://tsnm.shoesforindustry.net/
This s AWESOME.
To the maraschino-haters out there, may I take a moment to recommend Luxardo cherries? They are what those gross, plasticky, supermarket-brand, Red 40-doctored cherries are pretending to be, but they are WAY BETTER and taste like actual fruit.
Seconding the Luxardo love. None of the weird plasticky taste, all of the super-sweet juicy deliciousness.
what about just actual cherries
List for #5? List for #5! Also known as books-and-movies through which I came of age that left me very confused about being a girl:
– A Separate Peace
– Newsies
– School Ties
– Swing Kids
– Dead Poets Society
What else?
this isn’t a book or movie, but part of your list made me think of
– House (see: House/everyone but especially Wilson),
and therefore
-Everything Robert Sean Leonard has ever touched
NEWWWWWSIES. Jack/David is the ENTIRE POINT OF THAT FILM.
I recently saw the musical (and enjoyed it!) but in creating a more fleshed-out love interest for Jack (they replaced David’s mostly mute sister and creepy-ish Bill Pullman with a wise-cracking but privileged lady reporter) they completely diminished the Jack/David dynamic. Cue my utter devastation.
Katherine Plumber is the lady reporter of my heart, but I must agree.
NEWSIES!! The fire-escape scene!!!
i <3 u, spam comments/emails
WOULD YOU BELIEVE THIS AMAZING TALE MY SISTERS HAIRDRESSER EARNED $7489 FROM HOME BY HEARTING SPAM COMMENTS EMAIL ME TO LEARN HOW
I just got a spam reply last week on a Hairpin comment from, like, last year:
“Advantageously, the article is really the best on this notable topic. I harmonize with your conclusions and will thirstily look forward to your approaching updates”
I mean, is that beautiful or what.
I thirstily look forward to approaching updates from this spammer!
Is #3 on the approve list in reference to Gravity? Because I am trying to decide whether to see that tonight. Please advise.
Okay on the Maraschino cherries, but Luxardo Maraschino liqueur is the BOMB.
I really enjoyed Gravity. It felt more sincere and less gimmicky then most big budget movies I’ve seen of late.
Usually I don’t care for IMAX, but if you have access to an IMAX theatre, Gravity is pretty damn impressive on that big screen.
Stressful, enjoyable, and probably only worth watching in theaters. I can’t imagine watching it would have the same effect on a laptop or tv.
I haven’t seen it myself because just the trailers for it send me into this anxious state about how terrible things happen to decent people who are then powerless to help themselves (…yeah), but my boyfriend’s response to it was that it was a very good movie but not an enjoyable experience. He apparently cried himself to sleep after it. So, exercise caution, I guess?
Worth it for special effects but don’t think too much about the plot, characters, etc.
I loved Gravity – it was beautifully done and definitely worth the crazy amount of $$ that IMAX 3D costs, if that’s feasible for you. I mean, it wasn’t perfect, and probably a little manipulative, emotions-wise? but I think I was trying to hold back my tears too much to care, haha. (Also I nearly had a panic attack during the first scene, which has NEVER happened – so a word of caution there.)
When I was a kid, my dad told me that maraschino cherries can’t be digested, and they stay in your stomach for 7 years. I believed this for … let’s not talk about how long.
I was told that about all chewing gum.
uh-oh, I like/do about 3 or 4 things on the disapprove list this week.
don’t make me leaveee
The only thing maraschinos are good for is to decorate the middle of pineapple rings in Pineapple Upside-down cake. At which point, you pick them off to eat the caramel-butter-goo-crust underneath.
Fuck camisoles. Sluts 4ever!
Also: maraschino cherries?????? But what about manhattans?
What about stories where something goes wrong in space? Like “The Cold Equations”? Which I was about to write was by Theodore Sturgeon, but it totally isn’t. It’s Tom Godwin.
Unsurprisingly, you are correct on all accounts.
Can we also include people who flip through the channels on TV and stop on a show just long enough for me to get a little invested in seeing what happens next, and then change it? My brother & my mom’s boyfriend both do this, & drives me NUTS.
Yes. Yes, we can and must. And, in particular, we must specifically include those who flip through tv channels in RANDOM ORDER which is an offence against Nature and all that she has created. Jeebus, I just get my bearings with the French news and am looking forward all hot and bothered to the Food Porn when we jump to the pulpit of public television. Fuk is this? Thank you for signalling that turn.
I have dumped gfs for less.
i reconnected with an old friend over our shared passion for #5! her name is also molly; it was two mollys being pulled together through time and distance to delight over the obvious implications of the slash relationship of two characters who literally spend every minute of their lives trying to murder each other (out of misplaced affection of course!)
that warms the cockles of my cold, dead heart.
Once more, I’m pleased to find that The Toast and I are on the same wavelength.
About #2: I’m a republican through and through, but one reason I tolerate the British monarchy is that they’re helping to keep the millinery industry afloat.
I hate a nasty maraschino cherry as much as anyone, but I’ve heard the Luxardo ones are actually good? Can anyone confirm? Is this just a marketing ploy to make me buy a $17 jar of cherries?
No, those are totally awesome. Those are actual cherries preserved in booze and sugar.
Those bright red fake bar cherries are creepy. They actually bleach them. o_O
No! D:
ahahahaha i didn’t know that cherries didn’t come off the tree like maraschino cherries (i figured the liqueur was sugar water like with canned pineapples, to keep them fresh) and i was SO disappointed when i learned otherwise. i must have been in middle school if not high school at the time.
as a result, i’ve never been able to enjoy regular cherries. they’re just this enormous fakery to me. also, the noise my mom makes when eating them is 100000% disgusting.
Homo Secks-Sewell. Love that guy, and his wife, Lady Secks.
I once had a chiropractor who said we should all eat a lot of red meat and avoid dairy because it leaches calcium from our bones; the fact that it builds stronger bones is a DAIRY INDUSTRIAL LIE. He also once followed me out to the car to berate me for smoking cigarettes and try to get me to talk about the fact that I was cutting to him because “[he was] a doctor”. I DON’T HAVE A CHIROPRACTOR ANYMORE
I have a cousin who has 4 kids. She and three of the kids all have a variety of allergies – according to diagnosis by her chiropractor. The test? Putting samples of the different materials on their skin…and seeing how difficult it made it to raise their arms. And for the kids that were diagnosed too early to understand the directions/respond? Well, put the material on the kids arm, have the parent hold them, and see how difficult it is for the parent’s arm to move. Not even joking.
You guys, I literally shouted “Yes!” about number 1 in the disapproval list. An old roommate who was a chiropractor went on a rant on vaccines when I let slip my old job paid for my flu shot. I could not get him to shut up about it.
In other news, I really don’t understand the level of ignorance people have about flu shots.
Mr. Hunting Creek said of the cherries, “But we’re making Canadian Old Fashioneds! For Christmas Eve! We need them!”
“Too bad,” I said, “Nicole and Mallory have spoken.”
#3 is my husband. He also will sometimes look out the window and go “What?!” and not tell me what he’s looking at. I hate him.
I don’t care for #3 either – People who won’t stop laughing and exclaiming things like “Oh my God!” repeatedly while reading/watching. Actually just always saying “Oh my God!” for any reason puts me off.
