Let’s call it a week now, gang. I’m calling it. Please soothe yourself with Kumail Nanjiani’s “Happy Birthday” story, which never fails to knit up the raveled sleave of care for me.
This was the week Nicole finally left us to take her maternity leave. She’ll be back in two months. I don’t want to talk about it.
Our favorite linguist Gretchen McCulloch returned to teach us about swearing.
This Bible fan fiction about Jesus and the disciples getting stick-and-poke tattoos was SHOCKINGLY MOVING. I highly recommend you read it, if you haven’t already.
There’s no live-action Gargoyles movie yet, but as soon as they get all the rights sorted out, I’ve got the cast ready.
Roxane wrote about bad victims. “Good victims, of course, do not exist but they are an elaborate ideal.”
(he didn’t REALLY fight the Tolkien estate, you guys [OR DID HE])
Farewell to the Feasting Hall, felled by time,
Goodnight to the ancient Gates, engraved with grime.Where has gone the great hall, where the golden seats?
Goodnight to the grain bowl, the goodly meats.Goodnight glories of tale-tellers, gifts to long ears,
Longing to listen, for legends of years.Where now is the wall-clock, where the socks and mouse?
Where the comb and the cow, the carpet and house?
Alas for the song-spinners, the slurpers of mush.
Where is the old woman, whispering ‘hush’?
May we never run out of Old English translations of things.
Here is a picture of me, sailing into the weekend.

This week gave us a mash-up of “Goodnight, Moon” and “The Wanderer”, an article about Gargoyles, vicious fighting over ballet in musicals, the syntax of “Fuck”, and Dirtbag Dune, among other joys. Verily Christmas came early this year.
This has been a SPECTACULAR week.
I missed the Gargoyles post the first time around and now I am *staggered* by how on-point it is.
I love Kumail Nanjiani! He is consistently so damn funny on Portlandia.
His Portlandia characters are the best. He was also good on Silicon Valley, and The Meltdown” as stand up show he hosts is great too. Also if you are an X-Files fan check out the X-File Files!
HI EVERYONE! *waves furiously before the avalanche starts*
Seriously, this is my first time seeing the Toast Points thread under a thousand comments. I always look at it wistfully, but it feels a little intimidating to jump into at that point.
My news is that I’m going to my FIRST PROTEST tomorrow, against police brutality. I don’t know if I have an appropriate T-shirt. I’m excited and a little nervous, though I’m sure it’ll be anti-climactic (although there was a similar protest a week or two ago, through the same place (Houston Galleria), and a lot of stores closed down. Like high-strung, extremely nervous and expensive horses.
It’s funny because I’ve always been the play-it-safe type, so my first thought was “what if someone gets out of control and everyone, including me, gets arrested” but then I squashed those craven thoughts. This is really worth marching for, after all, and that’s what matters. (Though it will be interesting telling my mom about it later, since my step-father used to be a cop — from North Carolina — and his remarks on race make me really sad, even though I’ve also heard him complain about Houston’s trigger-happy cops.)
Anyway — best wishes to Nicole in her delivery! Hope everything goes well and they both emerge from the hospital strong and hearty.
Okay, Mallory, I need that sled (and outfit) after you.
ETA: Oh god, this isn’t the open thread after all, I’m so embarrassed
Congratulations on your first protest!
Am I letting out too much Berkeley when I say “Oh, whatever you wear will be fine, just wear something that won’t be wrecked by a few bloodstains.”?
Lol, don’t scare me off before I get started!
Guys, there’s a black box or something covering the part of the masthead with Nicole’s name in it. Is it an omen?
It is the gom jabbar.
Appropos of nothing….I am devilishly tickled that “Meta” is a category here. My heart is full.
(Of Toast.)
I have to say, the apostle tattoo story knocked my socks off. Where was stuff like this when I was suffering through 12 years of parochial school?
