The Greatest Good-Bye In Western Art History

goodbye father

“I don’t need clothes where I’m going; this horse has wings. I never expected you to understand it. Good-bye, Father. I won’t be seeing you again.”

“Come… come to the land of truly indefensible helmets. Seriously, these things are absurd. Look at the wing thingies.”

    1. Perdita McLeod +23

The eyeholes would indicate she’s wearing it up on her head only temporarily. When pulled down over the face, those wing thingies are going to severely hamper any arm movements above shoulder level.

“Sorry, these warriors are only intended to be decorative.”

I don’t think the wings are meant to be in the same plane as the eye-holes. That is, the wings as they are now are actually projecting behind the head. When the helmet comes down over the face, the wings will be more or less on the top of the head.

I choose to believe it’s a nearly-archaeologically accurate Viking helm from the Vendel find, and its spectral wings materialize only in the presence of the majestically blond-eyelashed Pegasus.

What wing thingies? I just see a chick with a helmet carrying a giant, table-sized shield behind herself…

    2. Diploid Duchess +3

Maybe the wings are hinged, and we just can’t see the articulation points. I’ll bet the wings flap with every thrust her mighty spear.

      1. Garnthegrim +5

I don’t think they are part of the helmet or wings at all. I think they are something behind the helmet…

“How can I try to explain? When I do, he turns away, and it’s always been the same, the same old story. From the moment I could talk, I was ordered to listen! Now there’s a way, and I know that I have to go away. I know I have to go.”

Ha, the way I imagined you saying that reminded me of touring a museum with a class one year in college. We stopped in front of a still life, and the instructor was talking about the various things on the table, and said, “So what does this represent?” And, in a voice that was inappropriately loud and enthusiastic, I said, “It’s Death!!”
Anyway, TL;DR: Your comment made me laugh.

Not twelve feet tall–look where her foot is. She is merely… floating. Which makes a LOT more sense.

        2. chasgoose +12

Monk 2: everyone knows that athena is 12 feet tall and wears a terrifying bird helmet and a cymbal over the area where her breast is but certainly not over her actual breast

I love the horse’s impatience. “Come onnnnn, let’s go fly already, hurry up.”

That’s got to be Bellepheron, though, he is going to fight the Chimera which is going to breathe fire all over him!

Oh wait, actually I wonder if clothes wouldn’t just make that worse? I really have no idea, now that I think on it.

      1. threatqualitypress +13

I mean, winged horse, lead javelins, golden bridle.  It’s got to be.

Did your book say if it was better to fight a fire-breathing lion-dragon-goat naked?

        1. Mrs_Peel +15

I guess it depends if you live in an era when Consumer Reports is testing flame-retardant clothes…

      2. celyse +11

This is truly my motto about most Historical Things and also Great Literary Figures: “I think I had a book about that when I was 7!”

    1. octopoda +19

Only if they are polyester or another synthetic. If he would wear cotton that would probably help (marginally, I mean I don’t think most clothes are rated for fire-breathing Chimeras).

      1. threatqualitypress +7

Wouldn’t they catch fire though?  Then the chimera would be breathing fire on him while he was on fire already.

        1. octopoda +13

Oh sure, if you want to get all technical about it.

No, but all I know is they insisted we had to wear 100% cotton clothes when I worked at Alcoa Aluminum (we were running ~800 – ~1000 deg C test cells), I think cotton has some amount of inherent fire resistance (We had other more rigorous PPE too of course).

          1. Perdita McLeod +21

Or could it be because synthetic fabrics might melt before they would burn? So cotton fabric would still burn but not melt onto your skin.

          2. octopoda +10

Oh that is definitely a major part of it, yeah synthetics will just fuse to your skin, it’s a bad scene. But I think they mentioned some (minimal) fire resistance too with cotton.

Also… what is shoved into his bellybutton? That is a really big outie there.

“Where I’m going, men don’t need clothes, but women need impractical boob armor.”

    ♫ I know where I’m going,
    And I know who’s going with me… ♫

(A freaking HORSE with WINGS and a lady with a crazy breastplate)

“Your mom REALLY wanted to be here to send you off, sport. I know for a fact she is definitely not hiding behind that tree until you leave.”

  9. Linette +19

That pegasus is looking directly at Bellepheron’s penis and he is super unimpressed by what’s under the blanket.

    1. Linette +6

Also am I the only one who remembers that name as “Bellerephon”? I’m going with people above who seem like they know stuff but I swear this is how some voice is pronouncing it in my head. Is it like how Hercules is really Heracles? Do I know anything?

          1. To Defeat the Puns +3

That’s the Fresh Prince of Bellerophon to you. *springs with quickness like lightning onto Pegasus, disappears*

      1. Räven +11

You are correct. Bellerophon. And he doesn’t get a re-naming by the romans, instead his story kind of gets suppressed; they get more excited about Perseus on the winged horse. Like, they just give his iconography away to someone else.

      2. RoseCamelia +3

I thought Hercules and Heracles were two different people/demigods. Now I feel like I don’t know anything for certain. Except for being certain going naked into battle is really stupid.

  10. Enhydralutris

Wool is naturally fire resistant (cotton mostly just won't melt on you). Knitters like to recommend using wool for baby items for this reason.

However, besides people who like fiber arts, most people aren't interested in wearing wool all the time and all over.

  11. octopoda

Ah! Maybe I was thinking of wool! Yeah that would be no fun around hot aluminum cells. I think the most important thing was the no-melty fabric.

  12. Marthah +6

“I’m sorry, Dad. I know you’ve always wanted me to wear a big red piece of cloth just like yours, but I have to be true to my orange beach towel.”

  13. Kitling

I just want to express my appreciation of the amount of thought that has gone into practical clothing for chimera fighting purposes.
