Hi yes will someone please invite me to the color spectrum party, I will be an eye-bending orange-red

    1. Adrian +12

I have been to parties where the food is organized-potluck. One person brings green, another brings red, another brings orange… (Black is challenging, but I once got stuck with it and brought black bean soup.) Clearly, such parties need a spectrum dress code.

      1. ElleB +5

This was my pride party last year! Though we mostly dealt in funky coloured booze / a shots rainbow.

  2. ughanothername +101

I really just want to be invited to a Summer Jacobite party now.

    1. goddessoftransitory +19

My one goal is to go to a Swamp Monster Casual get together.

    2. swords-and-spindles +6

Try some of the metal festivals with an about 40% medieval music saturation, it’s a rather accurate representation.

    3. terb +5

Summer Jacobite isn’t just for parties. Summer Jacobite is a look for all occasions until Bonny Prince Charlie is restored to his rightful place on the throne. With mojitos.

  3. dreadfulwind +70

I thought I just didn’t like parties, but it turns out I’m just not getting invited to the right ones. “Swamp monster casual”? I am so there.

  4. Iris +104

THOSE SCRUNCHIES ARE MEDIUM-HEIGHT AT BEST, SARAH JESSICA. YOU DIDN’T READ THE INVITE.

    1. tinypaperme +11

Somewhere, one of the Hey Ladies just shuddered and doesn’t know why.

    1. tabbylavalamp +35

I’d be extra interested in going to one if everyone had to stay in their bandwidth for at least an hour so all the colours made a perfect rainbow.

      1. tinypaperme +6

I would be That Person walking around and rearranging the guests into the proper order.

    2. marillenbaum +25

YES. 10/10, would show up with Jello Jigglers that matched my outfit.

    3. megalesias +38

my friends did a rainbow party once, where you dressed up in a bunch of clothes of different solid colors, and then during the party you had to keep swapping clothes with the other partygoers until you were all one color.

      1. RudyRed +14

A friend of mine did something similar – it was a Rubix Party, so we were limited to those colors. (Black was also allowed because that’s the border color for the squares.)

  5. middlemarch +67

“Summer Jacobite” –> um, as a recent convert to the cult of Outlander, this needs to be every dress code everywhere because JAMIE FRASER IS LITERALLY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CREATURE.

    1. middlemarch +92

All men should be dressed like this at all times, that’s just science.

      jamiefuckinfraser

      1. ladyimogen +75

Bonus, with less shirt, similar is its ability to cater to the (straight) female gaze: Jacobite Informal

        1. middlemarch +19

See, my fondness for Summer Jacobite is unfortunately limited to the Outlander series, and maaaaybe Rob Roy if I’m feeling real desperate. Maybe it’s the historical romance/fantasy element? The drapey shirts and knives? Idk.

When I see modern Scotsmen in kilts, however, I am suddenly and horribly brought back to memories of my high school uniform.

I recognize this is my own, terrible idiosyncrasy and burden to bear.

          1. dakimel +15

I shall bear it with you. Especially if part of the way we unburden ourselves is to re-watch Outlander.

          2. middlemarch +25

Yes. That is the first line of treatment for this horrible affliction.

            ToBedOfCourseYouPreciousLamb

(Images included because I cannot stop my gross, terrible self here. I love this Highland smut so much.)

          3. dakimel +13

I honor your love. Highland smut 4ever. In my fantasies, this series will go on forever, just like the novels, and we’ll get decades of sexy Scot action.

        1. middlemarch +19

Girl, embrace your Highland Papist self and give in to Summer Jacobite. As long as you have a love of the Bonnie Prince in your heart and a hatred of those godless English Protestants, you are one of us.

  6. mabissam +26

Color spectrum is going to be my next birthday party theme, thank you Evan!

    1. mabissam +56

WAIT I totally figured out how to make this a good thing for a singles party. Send out invites and tell people what color to wear, then periodically sort them during the party into same, complimentary, and opposing colors. Requires a giant color wheel to be posted somewhere (or on the invite).

Mix it up and tell partygoers to “make orange” or “make green” by blending themselves into groups.

Oh wow, I need to get some sleep.

      1. cleoreads +19

This idea *almost* makes me wish I still taught color theory.

I picture myself like a square dance caller – now form a triad, now find your complementary color, etc.

      2. tinypaperme +6

I can’t decide if this is a genius way of meeting new people or a terrifying social scenario that would force me to curl up in the corner and whimper.

  7. theburnersmydestination +28

The “color spectrum” reminds me of a wedding my mom was in, where all the bridesmaids wore a different color. Everyone fought to try to get “pale, pale aqua” (my dad’s description), but my mom was on her honeymoon, so she got the last pick……peach. The dresses were as terribly 80s as you could possibly imagine, too.

    1. ladyimogen +29

There was a commercial a few years ago- one of those mastercard ones that end in “priceless”- where the bridesmaid had to wear a seafoam green dress (having a friend worth wearing seafoam green was the priceless part). To this day, wearing a seafoam green party dress is among my greatest ambitions.

    2. ladyhumungus +17

HAH – my cousin did that at her first wedding, in the 80s. My younger cousin and I were “junior bridesmaids” (?? too young to be regular bridesmaids but too old for flower girls I guess?) and we got to wear white dresses. All the other BMs were in different shades of shiny pastel taffeta. It was hideous.

    3. cleoreads +11

My bff was in an 80s pastel rainbow wedding. I believe she wore frosted aqua with ginormous sleeves. It was a hideous dress. And the marriage didn’t last either.

      1. OiSunshine +7

“It was a hideous dress. And the marriage didn’t last either.”

There is just something beautiful about this phrasing.

    4. literarysara +8

I was in a wedding party that went like this. The bride sent us some jewel-toned color swatches and all the bridesmaids tentatively replied with “I would prefer this one, but I could do that one.” Ultimately it worked out okay–no one picked the same colors, and I picked one that corresponded to a dress I already owned, hey hey–but the process felt kind of extra.

    5. pugsnbourbon +8

My mom did this for her 1980 wedding. She has seven sisters, so she chose a dress that came in 13 or 14 colors – that way, no one got stuck with a color they hated. And there was no taffeta.

    6. ETT +12

My cousin was in a wedding like that! Except the bride didn’t give a specific palette, she just wanted to have a “rainbow” wedding, and each bridesmaid chose the colour of her own dress. From what I heard, it was a mess: one bridesmaid was in peacock blue, another in deep burgundy, another in pale canary yellow… and to top things off, after the dresses were ordered, the bride decided what alterations to make to them. So a detail (I forget what it was, maybe a bow or something?) that was supposed to be on the shoulder of the dress was moved to the collarbone, and the hemline was suddenly too boring to be all one length so all the dresses were cut to like a sideways high-low hem that started above the right knee and went down to the left ankle. On an A-line skirt. Then each bridesmaid’s groomsman was given a tie made from the fabric that had been cut out of the dress.
I have not seen pictures of this wedding, but I kind of wish I had.

I have attended (and thrown) krustypunk parties (sometimes formal, sometimes not), and that picture is missing the part where you’re trying to only breathe through your mouth because the “pirate punk” from Boise next to you in the kitchen is explaining why personal hygiene means you’ve been brainwashed By The Man.

    1. sneepsnake +10

Oh my god, I’ve been to that party, or at least I’ve met that “pirate punk” dude.

      1. ipomoea +18

My crust-punk ex-roommate wore the same pair of pants for two months straight that included train-hopping, tree-sitting, two periods, and hitchhiking. She came home and took them off in the bathroom and we had to clear the house.

  9. VioletandIrises +58

So who thinks camo parties are going to be the new trend in singles events?

Tagline: Who stands out to you?

    1. spillyfilly +10

I’m actually going to a camo party on Saturday (Ducks Unlimited event – $5 off at the door if you wear camo!).

  10. ScarlettHairdye +24

I have attended Swamp Monster Casual parties. They rock, can confirm.

    1. S. Pebbletush +8

It’s called the LadyFest Campout of Northern California and it’s fucking awesome.

  11. Es_Petal +18

Now I want to go to this wedding on Saturday in swamp monster casual instead of the frock with butterflies on it.

  12. bathysphero +14

Once I get the magician installed, Deep Sea Magician Cocktail will perfectly describe the aesthetic in in the Bathysphere.

  13. PettyVengeanceFetish +11

Swamp monster casual parties are something I didn’t know I needed until this moment

  14. The Elitist Semicolon

Somewhere, one of the Hey Ladies just shuddered and doesn't know why.

  15. The Elitist Semicolon

"Our school colors were clear. I'm not naked; I'm in the band." (Steven Wright, paraphrased badly)

  16. The Elitist Semicolon

I would be That Person walking around and rearranging the guests into the proper order.

  17. The Elitist Semicolon

I can't decide if this is a genius way of meeting new people or a terrifying social scenario that would force me to curl up in the corner and whimper.

deep-sea birthday magician reminds me of the scene in kavalier and clay where salvador dali gets stuck in his diving helmet
