What did your dad do on Valentine’s Day?

Mine spent it in the emergency room after almost cutting off his thumb with the table saw. I assume he was building something romantic yet practical.

    Dads.

    1. fatslut +58

My dad brought my mom flowers and Trader Joe’s chocolate, and they were planning on pot roast for dinner. Because nothing says romance like pot roast!

My parents saw Deadpool (sp?) because my mom thinks Ryan Reynolds is cute, and then they went to Outback. 🙂

Mine managed to catch the cold Mom & I are still getting over and turn it into bronchitis, so he spent Valentine’s Day hacking and coughing and being disgusting. We’ve been teasing him by saying that he just HAD to get sicker than us for the attention. We’ve also been disinfecting every surface he comes in contact with.

      1. PaigePoo +50

Is there anything worse (better) than dads who are sick? When my dad gets a cold, he lines up all his cold remedies on the kitchen counter and cannot stop talking about how sick he is.

        1. thebeagee +37

In my experience, men are more likely to be THE WORST when they are sick and, somehow, obsessed with their illness. One time I was living with two roommates, male & female, and dude roommate got strep throat for the first time in his life. The way he was acting, it was like NO ONE had EVER had strep in the history of the universe, oh the AGONY! Meanwhile, other roommate and I were like “we’ve both had strep multiple times, it’s not that bad, just take your meds and shut up already.”

          1. formergr +29

Men are absolutely the worst! I just spent the weekend with a new long-distance dude, and had a bad cold for the first half of it. He kept forgetting I didn’t feel well, and would be all, “Why aren’t you playing soccer with us??” and “Why are you so quiet?” “BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE SHIT”. I actually reminded him much more nicely, but the whole thing confounded me. My dad does this too–like he cannot remember for more than 4 minutes that I don’t feel well.

Until I returned and was complaining to a friend about it, and she pointed out he kept forgetting because if *he’d* been sick, he would have moaned and complained incessantly about it. So he probably just assumes quiet = all good.

My Dad scares us to pieces when he’s sick because he refuses to get any kind of medical help. He sliced his thumb open on a broken lamp last Fall and sealed it up with electrical tape rather than getting stitches.

          1. dorianneemmerton +9

My dad claims that super glue was invented to quickly seal wounds on the battlefield in the war, so it’s good enough for his cuts too.

(A quick google reveals that he is incorrect: it was actually developed as potential for see-through gun sights in the war but abandoned for being too sticky. If he had the internet I would email the wiki to him, but he doesn’t.)

My dad would have been driving back from Cornwall with my mum after their yearly trip to St. Ives. It’s not a Valentine’s thing, they just go in February every year for some reason, when it is completely wet and windy.

My parents tend to give each other extravagant Valentine’s cards, though not in person, they both just leave them on the kitchen table so the other one finds it at breakfast.

My parents went cross country skiing in very cold weather. My dad spent a long time on the phone detailing to me the several specific ways the trails were not well-kept, and giving me a blow-by-blow of how they both fell down because of gravel under the snow. He concluded by saying it was a great time. Then he tagged me in a Facebook photo to make sure I saw that he was wearing the hat I knit him seven years ago. Dads. <3

    5. thebellewitch +50

Best I can tell, he and my mom drank a bottle of wine and went outside and made snow angels? I think they’re enjoying the empty nest.

    6. threeforgirls +9

After skimming my mom’s emails, I feel confident in assuming he spent the majority of it cleaning the basement and saving his books from water damage post-third random flooding in ~2 months.

    7. LacaunaKale +21

Apparently nothing. Neither he or my mother wanted to fight the crowds. They are going to the restaurant that gives veterans half priced shrimp on Friday though.

        1. LacaunaKale +5

Ocala. But apparently I was wrong. Free shrimps are veteran’s day only, my parents just have a buttload of other coupons.

          1. betsymore +17

My inlaws live in Ocala! It’s like they picked the part of Florida to retire to that has the least natural beauty and coastal access, but the largest number of elderly white republicans, plus John Travolta. (They themselves are lovely and not Republican, I hasten to add, and my sweet MIL gets herself all worked up into a very decorous tizzy about how hypocritical all their neighbors are who rely on Social Security and Medicare but hate the Democrats.)

    8. unleavings +31

My dad (and mom) called me. And, I’m sure, all of my siblings. When I was a kid, they’d give us m&ms in heart-shaped plastic boxes that they reused every year. When we went to college, they’d mail them to us and make us bring the boxes back for reuse the next year. <3

    9. bottleredhead +49

My dad took my mom to the Hallmark store where they picked out cards for one another, showed each other the cards, and put them back on the rack. This is their Valentine’s Day tradition (they think Valentine’s Day cards are a waste of money).

      1. Mrs_Peel +10

I’m dying at this. This is definitely something my thrifty grandparents would have done (if they hadn’t been Communists who thought that “greeting card holidays” were a corporate scam).

    10. saffiedarling +3

My Dad broke his collarbone because he fell down a hill on the way back to the campsite after a music festival.

I’m not sure how related it was to Valentines Day, but it sure proved that my sister and I are our father’s daughters.

    “Is your kid high??”

Dad story: my FIL was trying to get ahold of my husband in the middle of a Sunday afternoon. He texts him. Gets a weird sexual response back, hitting on him.

Does he check if he has the wrong number? Nope!! He assumes that his son is on some kind of weird drug, and starts calling EVERYONE.

I immediately gets calls from my MIL and half his siblings asking if my husband’s okay, and if he’s on some kind of drug. “No? He’s at Home Depot?”

FIL had texted the wrong number.

  3. spacevalkyrie +42

My parents also made pot roast! When I told my dad we were making crab legs he was like “Oh wow you’re so fancy”

    1. Household_Opera +5

I immediately thought of my uncle — who is very much a Dad — singing the praises of chip clips at a family gathering years ago. CHIP CLIPS.

  4. ipomoea +65

I was at my parents’ house with the mr and my brother when I got word about Scalia on Saturday. I yelled “holy shit, Scalia died!” and my dad and mom literally cheered. My brother immediately decided to go level 11 Second Amendment Man. Later, my dad pulled me aside to complain about how the hell did my brother become a libertarian, especially when he’s been on L&I for the past 18 months.

Also, in January, I saw the new Star Wars and called my dad to tell him to see it. He saw it the next day and called to yell at me for not telling him about A Big Death.

    1. steveramstad +14

I like it better when it was called A New Hope and Obi Wan Kenobi was just one character but I like that Luke’s a girl now but s/he’s still pretty angsty I feel like we could move beyond that but anyway DADS amiright? wanting spoilers and whatnot

  5. allofthewhine +39

my dad would be the voice of dissent in that emoji article. he LOVES emojis and, more recently, bitmojis. He had one of his younger coworkers set up his profile so the picture looks EXACTLY like him. Every text conversation we have ends with at least 5 bitmojis.

    1. thebeagee +26

My dad would be the same. My mom’s phone came with more emojis than his did and he seethes with jealousy over it. He is also incapable of finishing a text message conversation without sending one final smiley face.

TIME TO UNFREEZE THE CHOCOLATE YOU BOUGHT ON FEBRUARY 15, 2015!

Is it too late to still buy discount chocolate this year? Damn. My dad is on a health kick because of…cholesterol? anyway something where he won’t eat anything fun, so I feel it has fallen to me to take up the mantle in this regard. Waiting three extra days to make sure the clearance goes really low is the most Dad thing to do, right?

    1. Hoolia +6

My local stores were already down to the dregs of the Russell Stover and the worst kinds of sticky red hearts by Tuesday, so I’d give up on it at this point and wait for the Easter candy sales.

    2. sparkwoodand21 +6

I was at the grocery store last night and, sadly, the whole Valentine’s aisle was already gone in favor of Easter. Hope you have better luck.

  7. poppy +41

Not chip clips; they break too easily. Those rubber-dipped metal spring clips that you can use to attach your tarp to your trailer–now those are really useful!

  8. tabbylavalamp +39

“GETTING YOUR KIDS OUT OF THE HOUSE FOR SEX” is probably the most unfortunately worded sentence I’ve read in a long, long time.

  9. falcofield +15

The last time my parents visited, my dad helped me work on my 1000-piece puzzle (he loves them) and spent the entire time taunting me for how slow I went.

  10. keristars +57

OH MY GOSH the timing on this is amazing, one of my acquaintances tweeted this photo just as I was coming over to Dad Magazine (she’s a private account, so hopefully the photo will link!)

ETA: I failed to consider that a photo without description is pretty useless for some people! I was so busy worrying that it might not show up at all. It’s a book called “Twitter” with headlines like “the best twitter feeds!” and “keep up with all the latest gossip!” and it’s almost a parody. but it’s deadly serious.

      1. keristars +14

        “# How to Start Trends”
        “# Celebrity Twitter wars”

        “500 Twitter feeds reviewed!”

it’s just all too much. And for only $2.00!!!! (presumably Australian, because this person was in Australia this week)

  11. walrathem +29

I just had to say how much I love the picture for this month’s Dad magazine. I love all the pictures but I think I love this one best.

    1. betsymore +20

Is it a tie? Is it a scarf? Or is it a cost-effective combination of the two?! Enquiring minds want to know.

  12. EmpressofBland +66

I don’t think my dad has ever used an emoji, but my mum recently discovered them. Here’s a transcript of a recent text conversation.

MUM: Thanks for your support- cake nearly cooked
ME: No worries. I think that might be an angry emoji though…
MUM: Oh dear I thought it represented uncertainty bordering on terror

    1. clairebm +8

My Mum also loves emojis! I get a lot of hearts at the end of my messages, especially if she’s texting me about my daughter, the adored grandbaby

      1. pretty_monster +14

i got “party hat+horse+leopard+football” from my mother in honor of the superbowl. and to think: just 3 years ago she was using my FB feed to ask what time i was coming to dinner. they grow up so fast *sniffle*

      2. octopusgrrl +2

My mum is much better with emojis than she is with txtspeak – I’m pretty sure she still believes that “LOL” stands for “lots of love”, which can be pretty awkward when you’re letting her know your cat has just died, or a family member has gastroenteritis.

I went and loved the workshop, even though I'm not actually a huge fan of Barbara Hepworth's sculptures – but I like them much better than Henry Moore.

It's a cool wee building, and definitely for someone who MADE things. And I liked the garden and its wee surprises.
