A Bit Of Fry And Laurie Friday: Cigarettes

“It’s a simple arsenous-monoxide nicotinal preparation, taken bronchially as an infumation.”

“I think you’ve taken a reasonably interesting idea and you’ve basically just completely overworked it. What started out as quite an interesting statement on our susceptibility to received ideas, has just turned into a rambling, vague, ill-thought-out piece of drivel, and you ought to end it now.” OH DEAR, THIS COULD ALSO DESCRIBE THE LATTER HALF OF STEPHEN FRY’S CAREER.

QI has great moments but it’s also allergic to having women on the panel, full of exhausting “my dick!!!!” jokes and it exhibits the sort of tiresome stuffy know-it-all-ness that has dimmed my love for Stephen Fry these last fifteen years.

and like nothing can take Wilde and ABOFL and Bright Young Things away from him but he still has to answer for Eye Spy

I agree with you mostly! The stuffy know-it-all-ness is actually something I love about him 🙁

British panel shows, in general, have a problem with including women. QI isn’t perfect (although it’s better than it used to be, and has always been better than, say, Mock the Week). But the difference for me is that when a woman is on QI, she generally gets a similar amount of speaking time compared to other guests (a problem that annoys me with Have I Got News For You), and she’s generally not there just to look pretty or be a sort of joke (which was often a problem with Buzzcocks).

yes! When it comes to totals, this is really cool, although I wish they’d break it out year-by-year. I mean, Just A Minute doesn’t look like it’s changed its #s since the 60s, which probably says good things about it in the 60s and not so great things about it now, but that’s just sort of looking at it.

This also doesn’t get into time on air, which would be really time consuming to code enough to have useful data, but is really important. Paying a woman to sit in a chair during filming is much different than creating an atmosphere where women are given the space to contribute.

But of course too much is bad for you, you blithering twat! That’s what too much means! Too much is precisely that quantity at which it becomes excessive!

I think about this way too much.

But Hidden Kingdoms tho!! His narration over all that incredible footage of chipmunks and little mousies has made my life the past few weeks on Netflix!
