So I went to the Padres game last night* and when the starting pitcher is warming up on the mount, they play a song of his choosing and show the artist/title on the video board. Andrew Cashner is a noted country music fan, so it was no surprise that he chose to use a Merle Haggard song last night. He usually isn’t super outlaw country so it was definitely a choice he made in memory. I thought that was kind of cool.

I grew up with Merle as the soundtrack to my childhood via my dad, and he and I were lucky enough to see Merle perform in 2014. It was a wonderful experience and one I’ll never forget. My connection with my dad is mostly through our shared love of music, and this blow is a hard one. We spent the night texting youtube videos back and forth and just being sad together.

I’ve had “Mama Tried” set as my mom’s ringtone for years and years, even included it at my wedding reception as a private joke. Been listening to a lot of his stuff and fielding sad texts from my brother, it’s definitely An Event in my family.
