Crossing “schedule haircut” off my to-do list for today. Thanks Esther, you saved me $60!

I cut my own hair these days, thanks to poverty and how-to-hair-girl, and the result is exactly like this.

My hair-cutting results are like this as well, which is why my chin-length bob now extends three inches past my shoulders thanks to poverty.
Ask me about the time I trimmed my big 80’s poofy bangs in high school and ended up with crew cut bangs.

I recently tried to cut in an asymmetric bob, like my really good (and expensive) hairdresser used to.
I will be living in side ponytails for the next three months – until it’s grown out enough to cut back into layers. At least if I cut a basic layered bob my mistakes get hidden.
(how to hair girl actually has really good advice on how to cut your own hair, it’s just I’m doing it with kitchen scissors which is probably a bad idea)

Yikes. Yeah, I’m wearing side ponytails a lot too, because when my hair gets long it pulls most of the curl out and just looks blah. It’s very fine and needs to be layered.
I’ll check out how to hair girl! I actually have one pair of kitchen scissors, but I keep them in the bathroom and only use them for hair so they stay sharp. I have blunt cut bangs, so I have to trim them myself regularly.

how to hair girl?! I need to discover this. I grew my hair out last year because I was tired of paying to get it cut every month, but i haaate having hair on the back of my neck and ponytails/braids just don’t flatter my face.
also the one time i got an asymmetric bob, it was because my hairdresser was chitchatting with coworkers and not paying attention, and it had been 2 hours in the chair and i just wanted to get OUT. i pretended that i liked it and it was on purpose, but secretly i seethed.

Here you go: http://www.howtohairgirl.com/category/ponytail-te… this is all the ahircuts you can do with a ponytail. I screwed up with teh asymmetric one, but the simple layered cut has always worked well for me.
I’d suggest paying attanetion to what she says and ‘point-cutting’ rahter than just cutting straight across, but she has tutorials for that too.

Amazing! Thank you for the link! I’ll be glad to try it. My best friend has been offering to use her trimmers to maintain the back of my neck/lower hairline, but I haven’t trusted her enough to do actual cutting.

We do it on purpose, and we drink your tears like wine. Then we eat your split ends for supper. Then we dance on the grave of your dreams of mermaid hair. JK! Bring a pic next time!

Ohhh I remember the time I got a really, really bad haircut. I walked around the city in a daze for about an hour, unable to speak, just sputtering helplessly, then finally walked into a different hairdresser’s, pointed at my head and said “can you… fix… this?”
Even the time I made my husband hack off about a foot of pregnancy-growth hair with regular scissors and my hair went from luscious curls to lank pin-straightness wasn’t as bad as that. It’s halfway down my back again now. I’m sort of scared to get it cut again, to be honest.

yes — there is something intimate about how a really truly awful-bad haircut can change your sense of yourself — it is a special kind of upsetting.
(usually I decide whether or not to repose trust in a new hairdresser based on their own hair, in the absence of other solid information about them, but this one time it was a bald man I had never seen before in a hair salon I thought I knew well – never again!).

What gets me is that this person continues to sit there as they get parts of themselves snipped. I love this so much. Is that weird? Weird is the new cool, right? Hilarious.

I was afraid this was going to happen to me last Saturday, but I was BRAVE and let her cut my hair IN THE DARK because the power went out for the ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD just as she was switching from the comb to scissors. And the power still wasn’t on when we finished, so I didn’t get the blow dry to check that my angled, layered bob was even or wouldn’t have any weird long bits if the part shifted by half a millimeter and ALSO I like to have my neck shaved and thank goodness she had a cordless trimmer, but she couldn’t see well enough to really go to town. And then we had to do one of those old-fashioned manual credit card receipts and I tried to help but we got the receipt in backwards the first time and it was just a mess (but worked out in the end).
Luckily, it came out pretty well. And I’m not balding yet, so I know that even if it didn’t, I could just give it a few weeks and get it fixed. BUT omg the niggling worry I had the entire time, because it was dark and the only light came from the big windows in the front of the shop.

I had a bad, terrible haircut once. I looked like Keith Richards at the end of it, seriously.

Once a drunk woman cut my hair. I gathered enough courage to stop her before any real damage was done but I had an interesting look for a month. After I left she was found in the back room passed out. Good times.
