Nothing — NOTHING — is better than a literary hatchet job that includes a sentence beginning with “Perhaps I’m naive, but…”
the only thing that might be better is having PERFECT COLOR VISION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And also the BEST PROCRASTINATION SKILLS!!11!!
Made all the more delightful by the New Yorker’s insistence on using the dieresis in “naïve”!
True life story: in my first year of law school, I once submitted a 24-hour take-home Con Law exam that thoroughly treated the issue of “preëmption.” With the diaeresis appearing over and over and over again. I’m not sure if I would make this choice again, if given the opportunity to revisit the issue. But at the time, it seemed like the right call.
I definitely anxiously read that professor peeves article to reassure myself that I didn’t do any of that even though I’m not in college any more.
I got 11 on the color test! (0=perfect, 99=terrible) This is a good sign as I am a designer.
I got a 19. Not surprisingly, the graph at the end suggested the majority of my confusion was in the blue-green range. Curse you, faulty rods and cones!
8! and some sense of shame about my really, truly terrible ability to settle down to an honest day’s work. BUT 8 is amazing for me BECAUSE, I am legally blind in one eye. -14 and -12 respectively. I feel so thrilled by the beauty of colour, contact lenses and what eyes can do even when they aren’t good and focussing. AND SPEAKING OF FOCUSSING.
I got an 8! Feeling weirdly proud! Though the range for people of my age group was way wider than 0-99, so I’m confused.
Myst! YES! That was my very first game, which was included for free with my very first Mac computer, the epic Performa 520! Oh man, what times. Wait, 20th anniv–
Well, that’s a punch in the gut.
*goes to buy it on Steam*
I actually find the “20 years old” thing kind of reassuring, as it explains why I couldn’t solve any of the damn puzzles (answer: I was 8!). Well, that and because it repeatedly crashed our poor family computer.
Now I have “Daves I Know” stuck in my head. Thanks, Nicole.
I have terrible colour vision, it turns out, and have had the Daves stuck in my head since Sunday when one of my friends told me she didn’t know any, so I had to send her the youtube link.
I have perfect colour vision! Whoa! That was really fun and exciting.
Me, too! Which I’d have been offended if not, given that I’ve been the go-to color-matcher for my job for 20 years. (It’s actually relevant for our business. Not just a party trick or whatever.)
Great fun, that.
I got a 4 on that color test and I’m sort of disappointed because I can no longer hide behind my “I don’t understand how colors work” excuse for my sorry looking apartment.
I too got a 4.
Maybe I am in the wrong career? Or maybe there are a lot of us.
I got a 7. I similarly feel the weight of my color vision now descending upon me.
I also got a 4. But just because you can see color doesn’t mean you know what to do about it – I can see my terrifying electrical service quite clearly, and yet I’ve no clue how to fix it 😉
I don’t even know how y’all finished it. My head hurt so bad after just the first row that I gave up.
I am halfway through and I’m having to take a break because because my eyes are totally wanged.
I remember my dad playing Myst when it came out, and saying to me “The graphics are amazing!”
I finally picked up a copy a few years ago and played it (and won with the help of a walkthrough, because damn, those are some obscure puzzles). I just…I can’t look at it without thinking about my dad’s comment . The game came out twenty years ago, and Technology Marches On and all that, but I can’t help giggling when I look at the graphics (thanks, Dad!).
It’s a testament to how much I trust your judgment that I at least skimmed every single link, and took the color test (4), before I even realized I was on the list. Yay! Thank you!
I have been thinking about Myst a lot recently because John Hodgman described my alma mater as “beautiful like the video game Myst,” which is super accurate and wonderful because I was OBSESSED with that game in middle school.
I got a 57. I’m appalled….and blaming my computer monitor.
Right? That has to make some difference. Something with lighting and rods and cones, maybe. (Incidentally, I got a 35. This actually doesn’t surprise me. That was challenging.)
I got a 57. I'm appalled….and blaming my computer monitor.
I got a 52…is my laptop screen that bad?
I got an 8! Feeling weirdly proud! Though the range for people of my age group was way wider than 0-99, so I'm confused.
