Okay but no joke I want to be that superhero.

Or maybe I just want that person to be present but can only be brave enough to take on the role when wearing a mask hiding my identity.

I liked this comic very much.

      Thanks!
I’m not that superhero person either – I am the person hiding in the bathroom.
I sometimes wish I was better at being this person and it’s especially tricky on Facebook where you can see the opinions of your various relatives.

    This is great!

Also, being able to sing tenor through soprano seems pretty excellent to me! I would ask, “Why the hell would anyone want to train you out of that awesomeness?,” except that I know. 🙁

At my choir (which is a gay choir) I sing alto, and one of our strongest singers, who happens to also be quite butch, will always sing along with all parts from bass to soprano, to the extent that she sometimes forgets to come in on our actual alto bits. Pretty great.

I totally want “That statement was the opposite of rad” handbills that I can pass around as I wander through my daily life.

One of the reasons that Dorothy was always my favorite on the Golden Girls was that she had a deep, non-feminine voice, like me, aside from how obviously awesome she was in other ways.

The Hamilton reference made me go “ooOOOH” like an eighty year old woman cooing over a small cake.

Thoughts or whatever: I showed this to a friend who said she had been given crap for having a voice that was too quiet and high.
So it appears that there’s no winning.

Also this second story happened in high school…see me already battling a Cerberus of tween hormones, and low self confidence, and AP tests and this lady waltzes in and says, “it looks like that mythical dog beast could use some help” thanks lady.

Yeah, that part reminded me of the movie In a World, which I liked, but had a whole subplot of women who sound “dumb” or “annoying” and how it was a good thing to teach them to talk “better” that made me very angry.

Oh sad times I kept meaning to see that…I really like voice acting
I did just see “Do I sound gay?” though and thought it was pretty interesting. I certainly identified with parts of it.

“Maybe I don’t want to be some kind of superhero who saves the world from YOU.”

    Heart eyes.

“Why am I responsible for fixing your opinions? I don’t want to be some kind of superhero who saves the world from you!”

Just. Yes. All of this. I made some cis friends recently and….yeah. This is going on facebook.

Uh oh. Just imagine if “unsolicited personal remarks” becomes the new big trend in street-level business promotion, like those people waving big foam signs on the side of the road.

“I was just passing by and noticed your voice. I can make you sound more like a girl!”
“Excuse me, I couldn’t help but notice that your hair is a pile of ass. Have you considered a stylist?”
“I’m conducting a study to determine why you dress like a clown, can you help?”
“Is your hideous reptile flesh a medical condition, or do you just not know about moisturizer?”

    1. urspostrophe +5

That would be straight up horrible, but I have to admit that “your hair is a pile of ass” made me laugh for real.

I am a femme who enjoys butch ladies of the deep-voice variety. One example is Tami Simon of Sounds True. She hosts an interview podcast and oooooh that voice…*swoon*

I can remember another boy in high school telling me he was trying to show me how to be normal.
Even when I was that young and dumb my response was “why would you think I would want to be anything like you?”

Ugh, the obsession over androgynous people. My parents have actually had that argument over a server, IN THE RESTAURANT. I just can’t understand why they care so much what another person’s gender is? Like do you really have nothing better to spend your time on?

Also, people who put gigantic bows on girl babies b/c god forbid someone mistakes the sex of a 4 month old.

      1. Pegasus Olson +4

I just boomeranged between horror and a crushing amount of sympathy for these daughters. The fact that the “testimonials” link is broken is telling.

    1. Theo_Winterwood +13

I had a regrettable acquaintance who loved to proudly tell the story about when she was a newborn, she didn’t have enough hair yet to keep those little Velcro baby barrette bows from slipping off, so her father would carefully Scotch-tape bows to her head so that there would be absolutely no risk of someone thinking she wasn’t a baby girl.

(Then again, this is also someone who once fretted that what if one day she had more than one son and they all went to different colleges, so she’d have to get separate sets of nice jewelry to coordinate with each school’s sports teams’ colors. So she was kind of a rich mine of insight into that kind of rigorous gender-binary-driven mindset that I wouldn’t have otherwise had.)

No matching jewelry set for the daughters’ colleges or…?

In my mind she’s wearing like, giant sapphires and diamonds at a UConn game, and now I kinda want to meet her.

That’s . . . pretty much exactly what she intended. Actual fine jewelry, not costume jewelry. (But I’m not sure you’d want to meet her? I have very vivid memories of her interrupting me mid-sentence once to announce really loudly that she hates feminism and everything it stands for. So . . . yeah.)

And of course you don’t get jewelry for your daughters. Girls aren’t allowed to be equated with college athletics. But if you have a son, he will be. (We asked about that; that was pretty much her answer.)

She was explaining all this to a friend and me, and we were staring at her in confusion as he (the friend) asked questions to wrap his head around this conviction of hers:

Q: Why do you need jewelry? Why can’t you just get a jersey?
A: Because I’m a woman so I can’t wear a jersey; I have to look fancy and classy to support my sons, so I also need to have matching outfits to go with my jewelry.

Q: What if your son doesn’t care about sports?
A: He will. My sons will all care very much about sports, unless one of them is gay. But then he’ll have amazing fashion sense and can shopping with me and it will be like having a daughter, only better, because girls are bitches. (This is the point where I wished I could teleport out of the conversation entirely.)

. . . That’s pretty much all I was willing to retain from that conversation, but my acquaintance with her was a pretty fascinating study in someone else’s gender politics.
