My little brother got married yesterday to a wonderful woman he met while playing “The Towers of Jadri,” who is not taking his name and did not make me dress up, so I’m in a warm, expansive mood (part of that is the gloriously autumnal weather in Chapel Hill.) You have my permission and encouragement to promote your own blogs and articles and Twitter accounts in this comment section.

5. Gary Walsh (Tony Hale): Sidekick to Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) on Veep
Buster Bluth would have been enough greatness for one lifetime, but Hale has proven he’s not a one-trick, two-Lucille pony on Veep, where he plays the sycophantic Gary Walsh. Gary (like Buster) is another strange man-child who craves approval from maternal figures more than anything else. Hale plays very broad characters with complete subtlety, making them real people. He was especially great in “Helsinki,” the season’s best episode, in which he was like a lapdog led to believe it could be a pit bull.

Congratulations to your brother and new sister-in-law!

I have nothing to promote, just complaints to lodge: I’ve had an ear infection for a week and am on my second round of antibiotics; I have two more days of work where I have to run lots of reports and decide on appropriate academic actions for students who are struggling, ending with a three-hour meeting tomorrow; my kid is sick four days before we get on a plane; I have to do so much laundry; the guy who maintains the plants in my office is destroying all of our woodwork with his sloppy watering and today is Confrontation Day about that.

Oh, hi, I have crashed your comment thread with my pettiness. Sorry!

No! Wait! I have a twitter on which I pretty much only post #bussmells: @m_steph_m

    1. hearyoume +3

I’ve been fighting a sinus infection for about 1.5 weeks now, so I just wanted to show some solidarity. Here’s hoping those stubborn bacteria in your ear subside to the second round of antibiotics, and that I can be awake for more than 5 hours without feeling like I desperately need a nap.

    2. yrpretendfriend +1

solidarity. I’ve had a lingering infection from wisdom tooth surgery FROM JULY and I’ve been on 3 rounds of antibiotics and its still chillin in my gums. ugh.

  2. Es_Petal +5

I have neither a twitter account nor a blog, but I am very happy about spending the afternoon procrastinating from work while reading about Fraggle Rock.

  3. avidbiologist +34

I recently watched a trailer for The Wolf of Wall Street and was surveyed about it while in the theater before I went to go see Catching Fire, and I was fairly tipsy, and the thing about me drinking is that I become more and more vehemently misandrist, so my comments to the theater dude taking survey responses were “Needs more shirtless Leo DiCaprio, MORE female leads, too many men. Would not watch.” My only regret is that I was not more thoughtful in my misandry (I don’t even find Leo attractive, so “needless sexualization of males” would have been more effective, and I should have made a comment about POC or lack thereof in the movie, SUCH IS LIFE). Reading that article made me feel more justified in my comments.

my twitter handle is avidbiologist and I would love to follow more toasties!

  4. literarysara +9

I love self-promotion! I am always trying to get people to read my two blogs about everything I love in this life–food and books–but in the interest of keeping it relevant to Toastie interests, how about thirteen books by women I read and loved in 2013? I didn’t make it thirteen on purpose, it just turned out that way when I left out books by men and books by women which I didn’t enjoy reading. Also, full disclosure, several of them were featured on The Toast so you’ve read them too.

    1. hearyoume +3

Oh man, I am halfway through Americanah right now and it is a STRUGGLE every time I have to put it down and go do adult things in the world.

      1. literarysara +2

I found its sections to be mostly compatible with my commute, but once I got near the end I just had to go all in and read it until it was done. I don’t often get that kind of immersion with a novel that is about the actual world as it actually is!

Also, I forgot to include my Twitter handle as folks are doing below. It is @Literarysara and among my other interests, I regularly retweet job postings in book business.

    2. avocadofrenzy +3

The Age of Miracles! Such a great book. I read that KTW wrote it in the mornings before work, which just blows. me. away.

      1. literarysara +2

Stories like that–the writing-as-a-second-job–are both inspiring and deeply aggravating for me. On one hand: it’s possible! I should try that! On the other: I AM TRYING LEAVE ME ALONE

  5. elsamac +2

What a lovely rendition of “When You’re Standing Next to Me.” It brought tears to my eyes. But then, it always does.

  6. beatrizcentury +4

We’re getting the green light from Nicole? !!!

All I have is tumblr but I do have some essays up at This Recording (thisrecording.com) if you’re ever interested! And by some I mean two– http://thisrecording.com/today/2013/10/22/in-whic…

    and http://thisrecording.com/today/2013/12/16/in-whic….

Also Mike Dang is a great person who published some lists about food I wrote!

PS: am going to maybe start podcasting in 2014, do people listen to these things?

    1. hearyoume +3

I listen to things! I love podcasts, and have always dreamed of podcasting. But I have a lisp which makes me pretty self conscious. Please podcast so I can listen, and live vicariously through you!

      1. beatrizcentury +4

Oh wow yes that must be hard! I think of course I’m not trying to take away from you but as someone who very much has spent a long time hating her speaking voice (public radio from when I was younger ughhhh I’m a bad journalist shhh) I think like, it is surprising what people like? and find aesthetically pleasing? And so if you ever wanna be a guest let me know because you know we can talk about vocal self consciousnesses. Also most people love Catalonian accents so maybe just fuck this country or something.

        1. hearyoume +3

Ahhhh you just made me so happy. I would love to be a guest! And yes, fuck this country re: lisps. You know, I never actually minded my lisp before I graduated from college and didn’t get a few jobs even though I knew I was super qualified and rocked the interviews. I started to think maybe my lisp was a factor and… welp, it really bothers me now!

    2. deleted5647547 +5

As a child, I had a reccuring dream that Aurelia the fortune telling puppet from Pinwheel BIT MY SISTERS HEAD OFF at Cinderella’s castle. Because I made fun of her for being a puppet. Obviously still resonates to this day, cause here I am 30 years later talking about it.

    3. msjinxie +3

I do a LOT of podcast listening! Commuting to/from work, running errands, at the gym – basically whenever I’m out in public and not with someone I’ve got my headphones in, and I almost always chose a podcast over music.

  7. naglayaxuliganka +2

I finally had an alone moment and turned up my volume, prepared to enjoy the music video – and it’s gone! 🙁 What a cruel, cruel world!

  8. RubeksCube +4

Congratulations to your brother (and what is clearly a worthwhile sister-in-law!)!
I will always read anything about any Jim Henson creation. I loved Fraggle Rock as a kid. Who am I kidding? I still love Fraggle Rock.
I am not on Twitter, but I write scraps of stories and poetry over on WordPress, if anyone wants to check it out. Also, if anyone wants to tell me about terrifying dreams, I’m enjoying writing those down and I’m trying to turn them in to…something? Eventually? Yes. So. There’s that.

    1. beatrizcentury +1

I am very interested in the dream things. lemme know! would that work in email? (I have anxiety dreams involving natural disasters and bridges so, super fun.)

    2. Es_Petal +3

How about unterrifying Toast-related dreams? (I had one the other day which I derailed the are you offended thread with.) I do have vivd terrifying ones, I’ll keep a note of your email!

      1. SarcasticFringehead +6

Last night I dreamed that I was simultaneously watching and helping to make a movie with a super-hot woman in drag, and I was like, “I can’t believe this didn’t make it onto Mallory’s list!”

      2. RubeksCube +1

I think there could probably be an entire sub-blog about Toast-related dreams. Actually, that’s not a bad idea. Wasn’t someone on this thread looking for a blog idea?? Voila!

    3. mbculver +2

Are giant, dog-sized spiders terrifying enough? I periodically dream about them threatening me and my family. Occasionally I think they represent my mother.

      1. RubeksCube +1

Um, yes, yes they are! If it makes you feel better, I once had a dream about a plague of locusts that I’m working on writing out. Similar theme as your dream, but I seem to remember the locusts won out in the end. Eeek…

        1. mbculver +1

The worst/most memorable was one in which my sister and I were playing in our back yard. She was pulling up some weeds, and one of the “weeds” was a spider leg. The spider (size of a corgi) came roaring (!) out of the ground, bit her, and ran away. I knew she’d need a hospital, so I picked her up and started running toward the car. The spider was in the driveway, blocking the way. Every time I tried to move around it, it would cut me off. Then it started coming for us…and that’s when I woke up in a cold sweat.

    1. JocastaCarr +2

Ahahahahaha at “Thranduil’s weave can get it.” Amazing. If I were on Tumblr or Twitter I’d totes follow you, for what it’s worth.

        1. JocastaCarr +1

I haven’t seen DoS yet, but I have an eternal and undying love for Lee Pace and I am mad excited to see him be bitchy in a long blond weave and pointy crown.

        2. mbculver +1

Bombur’s nest beard! I’m not on tumblr but just started following you on Twitter. I’m @Grumpy in Boston… nice to see we are city-mates.

  9. sluts4ever +7

I have no blog to promote, and promoting my Twitter seems like a largely useless activity because I don’t update it frequently and the majority of the posts are inside jokes with myself and things I/my friends say when we’re drunk.

Okay, okay! If you’re gonna beg it’s @kvte. GOD.

  10. hearyoume +8

My tumblr is http://ohhitumblr.tumblr.com. My friend recently described it as “puppies and feminism, emphasis on puppies” which I think is pretty accurate? I sometimes also talk about New Hampshire and Pokemon. So if that sounds like your style, welcome aboard!

  11. Lyzz

I’m at http://rebelliousjez.tumblr.com/ . I mostly reblog fandom-y things, comics-y things, feminism-y things, gothy things, and cute animals. Though the current top post is me in a top hat at Dicken’s Fair from last weekend, and I want to blog actual things, though I’m not quite sure which of my interests I want it to be about.

  12. deleted5647547 +5

Was anyone else terrified of the talking trash heap on Fraggle Rock? What am I saying, WAS.

I have nothing to promote because my tumblr is all terrifying horror stuff. Because I’m a Lovecraftian nightmare creature.

    1. elsamac +2

I read “terrifying horror stuff” and clicked so hard on your avatar. But no Tumblr link. SAD FACE.

      1. deleted5647547 +6

Oooh I don’t know how to do that! But if you like lots of Pet Sematary, the exploding head from Scanners, Creepshow, really bad jokes about ghosts and Return of the Living Dead among other things: http://thepainofbeingdead.tumblr.com/

And occasionally Montgomery Clift or Harry Belafonte or Gloria Swanson because, reasons.

  13. anachronistique +5

MAZEL TOV, brother and new sister-in-law!

Ugh, I could’ve written that article about depression in grad school, except I never even asked about a medical withdrawal. If I had, and kept my grades up instead of barely scraping a pass on my comps, and not spent so much time huddled in my room… well, who knows.

My tumblr is http://anachronistique.tumblr.com and full of comics geekery, Sailor Moon, and fatspiration.

    1. Adventure_Club +5

The part that stood out to me about that article was academia’s emphasis on the necessity of loving your work and regarding it as a calling or a vocation. I’m increasingly wary of describing any kind of paid work in those terms because the subtext ALWAYS seems to be: if you really loved it, you wouldn’t mind the poor working conditions/lack of accommodations/low pay, now would you?

      1. anachronistique +5

It’s so, so, so true. Academia’s particularly pernicious about this with the idea that you should be working literally all the time – that you should always be doing more research or writing something or contributing to the community or serving on committees. Because you love the work, don’t you? You love what the academy does and stands for and therefore should have no problem working eighty-hour weeks. More flexible scheduling and tenure isn’t worth all that. (Personally I find my particular brain-weasels are better served when I have a regular schedule and can close my office door at 5 and go the fuck home, because then I’m not constantly beating myself up about not doing more.)

The weather really is wonderful in Chapel Hill right now/all autumn.

My tumblr is poptimism.tumblr.com and the most recent post is a picture of my (parents’) NEW PUPPY. The rest is mostly Rilo Kiley/Pretty Little Liars/feminism.

    Chapel Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiill 🙁

I spent most of yesterday staring out the window listening to James Taylor and wishing I were home.

  16. jhsaxena +8

Congrats, Nicole’s brother and sister in law!!

Also yay self promotion. I wrote this on Monday, about this restaurant in New York that advertises itself as a “playful throwback to the times of Colonial India” which tooootally rubbed me the wrong way. I mean yes, as one asshole commenter points out, human history is filled with dicks and the Indians certainly aren’t a monolithic culture free from war or conquering, but this restaurant is just weird. http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2013/12/colonial-k…

Also I am so used to the lovely commenters at the Toast that I forgot about how real life Commenters can be.

    1. beatrizcentury +12

OMG SEROUS EATS WRITER? bow down.

also I was JUST thinking this as I caught up on my Billfold. What happened over at Awl media? I mean, The Billfold has always been full of some verrrrry libertarian type mansplainers, but like, WOW. I feel like I am just running in there with a sword and being like, GET THEE BACK.

are we just going to keep having to running and making new encampments like a dystopian internet society? 🙁

    2. franceschances +2

HOLY SHIT. That is one of those, “Seriously, no one said this was a bad idea, seriously???” kinda things.

    3. vmartinipie +1

Jaya! I am glad you wrote about this because I noticed a bizarre spate of similarly themed restaurants and bars in London and was just left scratching my head, like, Is this the real life, a life where the British Raj is an acceptable bar theme? What?!

      1. jhsaxena +5

Thanks! Yeah, there are some others like this in New York, and I’m sure elsewhere too. It’s just really strange because yeah, lots of foods we like come from questionable interactions, but there are ways to celebrate these hybrid cuisines without making the Imperialists into the glamorous heroes?

  17. deleted1892326 +4

If you’re interested, I’m on twitter @lemur_niemer. Thank god the bf doesn’t have a twitter, because most of the stuff is hilarious stuff he says.

And I’ve got a tumblr full of weirdo stock images here: http://youweresearchingforwhat.tumblr.com/ (that I know a few of you already follow. 🙂

Also I’m so excited to follow everyone on everything. More Toasties!

  18. MrsTeacherFace +1

Maybe it’s because I’m old (turning 30 in January, so pretty old, right?), but I don’t really get the point of Tumblr. I use Google+ and Twitter and sometimes Facebook (although mostly for my family), but although I do have a tumblr, I rarely use it. What’s the point? What’s the draw? Why should I use mine?

    1. Lyzz +1

I got mine to follow albinwonderland. She’s an amazing young feminist who popped up on my radar when a video of hers about how there are no fake geek girls, just shitty misogynists made the facebook rounds. And then my follow-list went from there. http://albinwonderland.com/ . You totally should.

    2. vmartinipie +6

Funny or pretty pictures and gifs I would not find anywhere else; weird text posts that make me laugh; good social justice if you know where to look; master lists of movies to watch online/online courses/recipes. Funny people saying funny things. FEELS about shows and movies that I can’t really share on facebook because it’s too weird and specialized? That is basically it.

  19. halleloujah +15

HERES SOME GOOD NEWS: Renisha McBride’s killer is going to trial on second degree murder charges, as of a few minutes ago.

HERES SOME BAD NEWS: if you tweet about it, people with handles like @support4GZ will talk to you about how Trayvon deserved it, and you’ll want to smash your computer and burn the dust.

    1. megmuoio

Please tell me that that is a joke. An actual person cannot be that horrible and that invested in “justice” for murdering racists, right?

And the Cheez-Its background on the Twitter page just makes me sad and a little hungry.

  20. jenx_toast +1

I’m a super enthusiastic lurker and sporadic commenter. I used to comment using the handle pimentinha, but I finally (finally!) made an IntenseDebate account and that was already taken, so now I’m a Toast version of my tumblr name. Anyway, no time like the present to break in this new name! (tumblr, for reference: http://jenx.tumblr.com) I post gifs, dogs, Game of Thrones things, Brazilian social activism stuff, and since I’m binge-watching Luther and Idris Elba, probably some of his beautiful, beautiful face, too. I also have a blog about living in Florianópolis, Brazil, that I really should post on more often: https://blogdamagia.wordpress.com/

  21. meetapossum +11

OH MAN FRAGGLE ROCK. If you really love this show, you should buy the DVDs. They have some great behind-the-scenes stuff. Did you guys know they made the Inventor/Sprocket different for every country they brought the show to to reflect the general culture of the country? Ugh, Jim Henson, I loooove you so much.

  22. BourneApprox +3

Man, that depression and academia article hit close to home. I’m an academic researcher who finally came to grips with the fact that I have an anxiety disorder this year, and who probably suffered from depression for large parts of grad school, so a lot of her points seemed familiar. For me, one of the worst parts of academia, with regards to mental health, is that it encourages you to intertwine your personal identity with your work. When research isn’t going well, or when you can’t find a faculty job, it feels like you’re a failure as a human being.

I had a horribly de-motivational talk with a professor earlier this year – a women who oversees some of my projects – where I expressed some of my doubts about my future. What followed was a one-sided lecture where she said that working in academic science was HARD and I had to really WANT it if I wanted to succeed. But also, jobs outside of academia were boring and also harder, so why would I ever want to leave?! Sent me into a tailspin for a few months after. Finally managed to get myself into therapy (actually at the suggestion of another postdoc friend), partially so that I’ll be able to get over the crippling guilt if (or more likely when) I decide to leave academia.

    1. jacqui shine +3

You may still qualify for ADA accommodations in your workplace, though. This is super-important.

(Hi, I wrote that piece and would love to chat with folks with relevant experiences! contact info on my site.)

      1. BourneApprox +2

Oo, I might look into that. But there’s also a good chance that life/husband/moving stuff might push me to get a new job anyway. At least health insurance pays for a lot of it! Thanks again for the article – it’s good to know others are thinking about this stuff!

    2. anachronistique +6

Oh man, the sneering contempt for non-academia work makes me want to spit tacks. And it makes that feeling of utter failure when you leave so much worse.

I wish you luck with therapy, and if you ever want to chat about this stuff or just rant I’m on twitter with the same username here.

      1. BourneApprox +7

Many stereotypes about academia are false, but the one about arrogance is often completely true. The therapy is going well – mostly going for coping strategies until I get myself to a new job. I’m a hell of a lot better off now that I was during the depths of grad school, and that improvement is ironically why I managed to drag myself to get help finally. Thank you for the kind words!

      2. MilesofMountain +4

Me too. I’m a scientist who got her degrees never intending to be an academic, so I heard all sorts of really terrible opinions about scientists outside of academia (including many discussions of whether someone outside academia can even call themselves a scientist as we apparently don’t even deserve the title). I have never regretted going this path, though.

      3. Angelan_ +7

It’s like a creepy cult that keeps people in it by telling them terrible tales of the outside world, but going on and on about how special you have to be to get into the cult in the first place. On the other hand they let me turn up to work in jeans and a hoodie, so… swings and roundabouts?

    3. normal_catlady +4

Yeah my advisor (grad student here) conveniently forgets that I’ve said I’m going to industry after I graduate. I’ve lost count of the times where he’s asked me what I’m going to do again, and it just doesn’t sink in for him.

    4. twobluebikes +3

I got all the guilt trips from one of my advisors when I made it clear I was not staying on Planet University and setting off for other adventures. All the guilt. It made me sad, because on the whole, I had a good experience in grad schoolBut sometimes, life takes other turns, and you have to do the things that make you happy. I also definitely relate to your comment on how difficult it can be when your identity and work get too tightly connected.

Best of luck with the studying, therapy, and sorting your future. I know people who are happy as academics and I know plenty who have left and it’s worked out just fine. Hang in there!

  23. joycemillman +3

Congratulations to Nicole’s brother and sister-in-law! I am in awe of any family wedding that doesn’t end in fisticuffs and screaming.

Last night’s office holiday party re-cap: I have two mini bottles of booze and a quarter of a flask left, and I charmed the bartender at the after-party bar (Not hard for me, as soon as I start pulling the “I was a bartender for 16 years” schtick and grossly overtipping- because honestly bartending a huge group of already tipsy coworkers should entitle you to millions of dollers). Anyway, I managed to only get charged $75 for 20 shots and I tucked a $100 bill in his collar and told him to stay pretty. Also I went home with a co-worker. Whoops!

  28. jhsaxena +6

Oh wait here is a place to ask this! So, does anyone else think they’ll be way too traumatized by Wolf of Wall Street? Here’s my thing. I’m not looking forward to the orgies and gratuitous hookers and just half-naked women seemingly running around everywhere, but I’m one of those people who is really easily freaked out by drug use in movies. I’m sure it comes from a host of personal, therapist-uncoverable places, but it just makes me really uncomfortable and upset. Is anyone else like me? Can we have a club where we stand up to the people who are constantly wanting to watch Scarface and Boogie Nights and Goodfellas?

    1. shahea +2

I can’t watch rampant drug use (except pot, because how is that a drug?) in movies and the violence bothers me too. I watched The Departed through my fingers and felt anxious the entire time. Not enjoyable.

    2. anachronistique +2

I still haven’t seen Requiem for a Dream, dude, we can go watch something with elves in it instead.

The grad school – depression article is hitting too close to home. After a brutal phd I guilted/bribed myself into doing a post doc and now after two years of sitting at home (because of stress related illness and general inability to carry on) I’m trying to bribe myself into getting a non-academic job. I haven’t actually had the courage to read the entire article yet, but the comments upthread are eerily close to my experiences. I’m just going to curl up in the corner now..

Yay for Toasties on Tumblr! I’ve been looking to add more awesome people to my dashboard. I’m @heartstillatwar and mostly post fandom things, baaaaby animals, and Ravens football.

Also, glad to see my absolute lack of interest in’ Wolf of Wall Street’ from the trailers alone is validated.

I am @mk_patter on Twitter and just followed eeeeevvvvverrryonnnnnne, so don’t be too creeped out! (Maybe a little creeped out.)
I also co-run a blog called Paper Droids and right about science and tech and video game thingies, my latest is about The Wolf Among Us’s MASSIVE WOMAN PROBLEM HOLY SHIT.
Haha I live like an hour and a half away from my hometown and still have not been since last year, so I don’t even comprehend people who have to go farther than that.

Sweet! New Twitter people to follow. This is all the RAD. 😀

I’m @_Gavia_ and I have a webby, twobluebikes.com, which is currently all surf photos if you like that kind of thing.

The worst/most memorable was one in which my sister and I were playing in our back yard. She was pulling up some weeds, and one of the "weeds" was a spider leg. The spider (size of a corgi) came roaring (!) out of the ground, bit her, and ran away. I knew she'd need a hospital, so I picked her up and started running toward the car. The spider was in the driveway, blocking the way. Every time I tried to move around it, it would cut me off. Then it started coming for us…and that's when I woke up in a cold sweat.

Stories like that–the writing-as-a-second-job–are both inspiring and deeply aggravating for me. On one hand: it's possible! I should try that! On the other: I AM TRYING LEAVE ME ALONE
