As I return to the land of my birth for a three-week sojourn, it occurs to me that I should have a delightful Toronto Toast meet-up for my cold, deceptively-placid country(wo)men. Who would attend such a thing, and where should we have it? I will be in Southern Ontario from the 18th of January to the 6th of February. I will demonstrate correct pushup form once more.

I just read Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home, finally, and then I cried and went to bed and I would love to talk about it in this thread, because I think it is just breathtaking and amazing and now I have the companion volume about her mom en route to me. I also have The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For, and it lives in my guest room to edify visitors. My aunt always had Bechdel collections, so Mo is a huge part of my childhood. I have a lot of *feelings* about the Gormenghast trilogy as a woman who first read it at ten and has re-read it every year since but I’m not sure I could be coherent about it. But maybe I could!
Same here (although not quite as many rereads) – I love it with all the depths of my soul but talking about books just kills them for me and I can’t lose Steerpike and Fuchsia.
That was my thought. “Oh, hey, I love Gormenghast! *And* I paid a ludicrous amount of money to watch the BBC version when it first came out! …not sure I can be ‘brilliant’ about either of them, though.”
What always niggled me about Gormenghast was how I felt like I was missing some sort of really obvious allegory because the story seemed too elaborate to just be a tale.
I remember *loving* the BBC version, although in retrospect I think it was pigshit insane.
I also really over identified with Fuchsia. Probably for Steerpike reasons.

Like, I don’t think there’s any intentional allegory, but plenty of people studying the books disagree. I think,. however, that the book is more metaphorical than allegorical.
For me it’s all about the way taht lives and societies can be hemmed in and suffocated by arbitary rules, and that not dropping traditions when they are no longer necessary can end up killing a society. Also, a bit about how those who do not fit in end up deliberately and accidendtally alienating themselves from a world that doesn’t make sense.

Well, a large part of gormenghast is about all these traditions that don’t make sense, that were incorporated because at some point some past person did a THING, and now they are repeated, over and over again even though it’s not important any more. Like they dredge the lake, once a year every year for reasons now forgotten. And Titus rails against that by choosing the wild thing in the forest, but it gets her killed, and Steerpike works within it by faking new rituals in an attempt to usurp power, and it’s this world where tradition has it’s own weight and is more important than people and I think that Peake was simultaneously pointing out the comfort of a life ruled by tradition, where you never have to think, and pointing out the inherent ridiculousness of it.
And in Titus Alone, he goes back, and it;s enough for him to know that Gormenghast still exists. He returns to the stifling, entangled mess but the existence of the tradition means he is able to live without it.
(it is a shame he died before the books were finished. TRAGEDY)

Also, this shows why The Toast is such a perfect website. Most people I encounter in daily life haven’t even heard of Gormenghast. It’s like Nicole and Mallory have a window into my brain and know exactly what kind of articles I want to read.

I love Gormenghast so much that I can’t re-read it as often as I’d like, because the books affect me too much. They take me to a very weird emotional place—as weird as Gormenghast itself, I’d say—and I simply can’t handle visiting there too often. But oh, how I love the books.
I absolutely loathed the BBC adaptation. Couldn’t make it through more than about 20 minutes because the entire tone was just wrong, wrong, WRONG.
FUN HOME IS SO GOOD. There’s a musical now! People said it was very good! I still haven’t read Are You My Mother? though.
The musical is AMAZING. Smart, compelling, moving, beautiful. And I say that as someone who bought tickets mostly for social reasons and general supporting-queer-art and had deep doubts about how that book could translate into musical theater. It’s brilliant.
I read Are You My Mother? first, because my little brother had a copy, then hunted down Fun Home. They were both amazing, and there were bucketsful of tears. I have no ability to think critically about either of them, because I am too busy dealing with the heart-rending-ness.
Unrelated fun fact, about a week ago an ex called me in great excitement to tell me about the Bechdel test, which he had just heard about. I was torn between being pleased that he was so happy about this lady-centric measure, and the deep and petty desire to tell him that he was behind the curve.
But the heart-rendingness. Remember when Nicole wrote the post about the ways we love and mistreat and are confused by our mothers on The Hairpin, and it was the most heart-felt, self-reflective, painfully honest comment section of ever? Honest writing about mothers and mother figures and the way we relate to them does that to me every time, and we should talk more when you all have read the second one.
Of course, just from Fun Home we could talk about fathers and families and art and queerness and the way we tell our own stories to ourselves, and cry and cry and cry.
Ooh, Are You My Mother? was so good – and yes, completely heart-rending. I blazed through it and then had to make an appointment with my therapist just to discuss. So much of it clicked. Plus, the art and care and research and thought that went into the book all were astonishingly good.
Haven’t read Fun Home yet. It might completely unravel me.

As far as locations go, the big Toronto pinup was at the Victory Cafe (near Bathurst station) and it was great, lots of space/tables and good food. P.J. O’Brien’s is a nice Irish pub and closer to Union and they have smaller rooms we could probably book, and C’est What (also in that neighbourhood) has a larger room that can be booked. If slightly-less-on-the-subway-line is ok, we’ve also had some pinups at No One Writes to the Colonel (College/Bathurst), which has amazing mojitos.
Oh these are all good suggestions. Victory Cafe and C’est What are two of my faves and have great beer selections.

I am convinced that Chris Christie thinks he’s a way better liar than he actually is. There’s no WAY all this shit happened right under his nose and in his office without him getting some whiff of it. I mean, either he’s part of it and is just trying to disappear people by firing them without asking questions or he wasn’t part of it and is the absolute worst manager of all time. Either way he looks entirely incompetent.
He’s also brushing off things like “Why didn’t you ask Bridget Kelly about her motivations?” with “I don’t care” which just looks really, really odd. Why wouldn’t you care? ESPECIALLY if your story is that you had no idea she was doing it!?
ALSO Rachel Maddow came up with another potential reason on her show last night, a pretty compelling one — that Christie’s people weren’t targetning the mayor, but the NJ Senate Democratic Leader over some judicial appointment fights that had been going on in the senate. If it’s true, I think it’s even more damning than the “retaliation for not endorsing his reelection” idea. It’s currently the top video here, titled ‘An alternate theory of the Christie scandal.

Interesting! I had been wondering why everyone was so sure the mayor was the target. It seems extreme, even for Christie, to target a mayor of a relatively small community from the other party for not endorsing him in a race he was going to win by a landslide. The emails certainly didn’t make a motive clear. They definitely refer to the mayor as an idiot, but that could just be because he foiled their plan by going to the Port Authority.
Agreed! Doesn’t it make him look incompetent to have a close top-level aide who’s “stupid” and “deceitful” and “lied to me”? And, since he’s obviously lying, doesn’t it make him look even WORSE to throw her under the bus like that for executing his orders?
Maybe it’s just emotions getting in the way, but his willingness to nastily sacrifice her in his horrible 2-hour humiliation/apology-fest seems even worse to me than the original offense — it just seems sociopathic and cold and reason to exile him from political office. Also, apologies are really over-rated — I would loathe him a lot less if he would just own up, regardless of whether he then apologizes or doesn’t. The apology seems hypocritical and servile. Unless there’s something I’m not getting?
Oh a Toronto meetup sounds like funnnnn. This link roundup has all my favourite stuff, like Alison Bechdel and Jane Hu. On the Alison Bechdel note, I saw the Fun Home musical on my last trip to NYC, and it was BANANAS good! Sadly, did not love Are You My Mother.
I grew up near and spent a lot of time in the same isolated place Bechdel did, and the landscapes, cultural callbacks to that specific place and time, and some of my and Bechdel’s overlapping, erm, quirks, made the book extremely eerie to me, like reading an AU fic of my life where I was extremely into literature and did not collapse under the weight of my own perfectionism.

I really only heard about the bridge thing yesterday. I guess no one died as a direct result of Christie’s tantrum, b/c I haven’t heard any mention of criminal charges?
There are investigations in the NJ senate as well as a federal one that recently got opened up. It’s still developing, I’m guessing there could very likely be charges in the coming weeks. There were a lot of complaints from EMTs and first responders that they were delayed in responding to emergencies and one woman did die after delays in emergency response caused by the traffic.
FWIW is the family is saying that they don’t think the delays caused the death. They think she had been dead for some time, and they hospital just confirmed it. I think that I believe this, especially since even with the delay they got to her in seven minutes.
Yeah, the article mentioned her situation was one of four in which responders were delayed, though, so even if her situation would not have turned out differently, the more troubling thing is the possibility that someone could very well have had an emergency in which those few minutes could have been the difference between life and death.
No, you’re absolutely right, but given that no one did die, and that this type of scandal will hopefully be a one-time thing, I feel that the lack of death gives me more license to gleefully feel more schadenfreude about this. IE my motivations are not pure.
Oh I’m munching gobs and gobs of popcorn watching this presidential hopeful go down in flames. And thinking about what the republican pool looks like now that he won’t be in it. He was, after all, everyone’s “well if we get stuck with a republican, I guess he wouldn’t be SOOOO bad” person.
I am sort of scared about that pool. Every prominent republican I can think of off the top of my head is a terrifying loon.
Which means the national election would destroy them. They might win their primary with that crap but the whole country still has a good bit of sanity.
I am a registered republican for this reason. Vote for the most horrible one with a shot of winning in the primaries, spend the next few months dodging phone calls asking me to volunteer to ‘get the word out’ for the guy, then vote for who will at least not make my body a battleground at the real election. (Swing state, swing county, can’t vote full socialist. Yet. The revolution will come, dammit.)

I hope this is truly the end for Chris Christie. However, knowing people who have voted for him and who like him, I doubt this will change their opinion of him.
I think that will depend on if there are criminal charges or not. With criminal charges this close to 2016, he will have a hell of a time running for president, at least this time around, but if he slithers away from this stuff somehow, it could be very different.
Fun Home: a thing that I somehow did not know existed until now, but it has been immediately added to my to-read list.
You’ll love it. Aside from the brilliant writing, the illustrations are so painstaking and beautiful. I couldn’t help think how long it must have taken her to complete.
It took SEVEN YEARS, and she posed as each character in photos to work on angles and perspective. There\’s a picture of her dressed as her dad looking down at the camera oh my god this book this woman.
Oh man, I have been shoving Fun Home into peoples’ hands and demanding that they read it basically since it came out. I did not think that the second book, about her mother, packed the same emotional punch, though. (But, I mean, how could it?)
I’m not sure I can even describe this book coherently, to be honest. Just read it, if you haven’t. Go to a bookstore right now, buy it, and block off a couple of uninterrupted hours. And sit and read it.
If I don’t particularly care for graphic novels, should I get over that for this book? Based on all these glowing reviews, I want to read it, but I follow the link over to the physical copy I also cringe in aversion to the format.
yes yes yes. I’m a big fan of graphic novels, but we read it in my contemporary american lit class in college (with a bunch of non-comics fans, is what I’m saying) and people just loved it.
yes. This is the book that convinced me that graphic novels can be capital-L literature (to put it in pretentious terms).
The way she illustrated this book is not just, oh, here’s some pictures to go with the words. The pictures are actually a huge part of the story, and illuminate and underline her themes and plot.
I would not necessarily argue that you should get over your dislike of graphic novels overall (we like what we like), but I would urge you to try to set it aside for a couple hours, to read this book.

I would definitely come to a Toronto Toast meet up! In terms of places to hold it, I’ve always held book club meetings at Paupers Pub, which usually has plenty of room. Or if you wanted to be closer to Union (so any GO train riders could come), maybe Fionn McCools on the Esplanade?
Here are a few places I’ve found to be generally receptive to groups of indeterminate size:
— The Victory Cafe (near Bathurst Station and also parking) — they have a small room off to the side on the ground floor that can be reserved. Probably a max of about 20 if using that room. The menu is pretty inviting to a mix of dietary concerns and they have craft beer on tap.
— The Yellow Griffin (near Runnymede Station and also parking) — they have an upstairs room that’s available at no charge for largish groups. The menu’s not all that veggie friendly, though, and the beer selection is strictly majors.
— The Spotted Dick (near Yonge & Bloor, there’s parking around, but it’s pricy) — they’re pretty open to groups of indeterminate size, a few knitting groups meet there.
— Bedford Academy (near St. George Station, also parking) — in an old house so has lots of smallish rooms available for reservation. Does have a minimum spend, but I don’t know how onerous it is anymore.
I responded above, but the Bedford doesnt ‘have a minimum spend anymore, and they’re really great with large groups. Also, they have veggie and gluten-free options!
i tried to book the bedford for a (pretty big) event this past summer and they had a pretty steep minimum spend. but maybe that’s just for their largest rooms?

The thing that BLOWS my MIND about the Chris Christie thing is: waving aside the truly massive moral/political sleaziness of it all, I don’t understand how top level political aides could leave an electronic trail of them saying comically horrible, moustache-twirlingly diabolical things.
Drug dealers have figured this out ages ago. Haven’t they seen The Wire? Go to a payphone, jump the 5, etc.
I guess it’s more hubris than stupidity.
I think starting now everyone should have an Intro to Internet class, where they just repeat “nothing is private, everything is permanent” for an hour or so. (I mean, I’m glad their failure to understand this led to exposing what was happening, but seriously)
I loved Fun Home! I also have a copy of Are You My Mother? on my bookshelf but I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet, since I’ve mostly heard it’s not quite as good. I love everything Alison Bechdel does to some extent or another though, and push my copy of Fun Home on anyone who will take it, including most recently my mom. As someone who has/had a sort of complicated relationship with my own dead father, reading it is a punch in the gut every time in the best most cathartic possible way.
When I was living in Madison, Wisconsin last year I saw her give a talk/slideshow presentation at the University, and it was wonderful and completely won over the heteronormative male friend I dragged along for his own edification after he wouldn’t stop rolling his eyes whenever I said “dykes to watch out for”. She was really charming and funny and the right amount of self-deprecating, and the presentation went into great detail about her drawing/writing process, including a collection of pictures she had taken of herself with a self timer posing as the characters in the book so she could study them as she drew. It was fascinating to hear her talking about Fun Home with snapshots of her dressed as her father as a backdrop.
Actually– I recently read Are You My Mother with nervously bated breath, having just finished Fun Home for the second time and fearing it could never compete, and…it was a really engaging, thought-provoking read! Very different from Fun Home, which I found much more emotionally wrecking/ a “punch in the gut”, as you say, but really great in its own way (I sped through it without putting it down, if that gives you an idea). So, it might be more comparing apples to oranges to pit the two books against one another?
Anyway! All this to say–you should give it a shot!

I love Alison Bechdel, but have to just offer a general observation that any time a link or post raises a question for me, not only do I find an answer somewhere in the comments, there are usually street directions to it and a free door pass. If the US was governed by The Toast? I’d give up apples for that.

I heart No One Writes to the Colonel. C'est What is super easy to walk to from Union, which could be handy for suburban friends (?). I also heartily approve of patronizing any and all bars as often as possible prior to their being demolished (The Central and the Vic)
