Are you all checking out #DangerousBlackKids yet? Threat Level: Gummy bears and sunshine. Oh, what’s this all about?

“This is not to say America is better than Russia, which my Russian readers always assume is what I’m trying to say with every article I write about Russia, but that Russia has to sort out some of its psychological issues.”

Google Plus something something evil too boring to read about should I be using it y/n?

“I think anyone who says they fully read and ponder every article before tweeting is lying through their teeth.”

SUPER COOL roundtable conversation about black women in media (featuring Lena Waithe and Issa Rae, among others!):

This needs to be at least…nineteen times longer.

I just started watching Brooklyn Nine Nine, because I always start watching things after award shows tell me to, and I’m digging it!

images-1

*

They unpaywalled the Roger Angell piece I was telling you about last week? Who loves you, baby?

*

Blech.

*

NOPE NIGHTMARE. Seriously, though, people in the comments, do you need to tell us how much older she looks than her stated age? Let me tell you, a few months after I had my daughter, my husband’s friend was over and said OUT OF NOWHERE “and, Nicole, you’re what, 35, 36?” and my husband lost all colour in his face and then I said: “…I am 29″ and then he stuck his arm down the active garbage disposal to atone for having VOLUNTEERED a guess at a woman’s age.

tbh, I did look pretty busted three months out, tho, no sleep will do that do you

EDITED TO ADD: I AM COMFORTABLY IN SAID DECADE NOW AND LOOK AMAZING JUST LIKE YOU. Why, just last week, my toddler said “Mommy!” and pointed at Jennifer Connolly on the cover of Allure. Or so my mom reports. She lies.

Brooklyn Nine Nine! So great! So quotable! TERRY TATE’S TWIN DAUGHTERS ARE NAMED CAGNEY AND LACEY.

    edited to add:

    1. tjdubya +9

This show is undeniably funny and I’m disappointed that I ever doubted it.

Sidebar: Andy Sandberg’s roast of James Franco (first let me say that I’m not a roast person) was brilliant and worth a look-see.

    2. EPWordsnatcher +5

EDIT: TERRY CREWS, NOT TERRY TATE. Incorrect, Wordsnatcher. (And his character on the show is named Terry Jeffords. So many Terrys!)

    3. anachronistique +6

“They have adorable chubby cheeks” was the moment in the pilot when I went I AM ON BOARD.

      1. dakimel +5

Suspicious. In their matching pink sweatshirts? Probably a gang colors thing, right?

(Did I die at all the cute kids reading and playing and hugging grandma photos on that hashtag? I did. I am dead.)

        1. alicia +2

The two photos in a row of babies in brown bear costumes essentially ended my work day. Also, the dad with a “my valentine” shirt with an arrow pointing to his toddler daughter. Gahhh.

      1. 900ccs +10

AH THE CORGI IT WAS SO FAT I LOVE IT

Literally the first thing I did after I watched that episode was go straight to youtube and search for “fat corgi”. I am not proud of this.

    4. GreenGrasses +2

Do you know of any way to watch this for free? My manservant and I bought the first episode from iTunes but we would like to continue watching for a bit cheaper.

      1. 900ccs +6

It looks like the last 5 episodes are available for free online (Hulu and Fox’s website), at least in the US. Which doesn’t help if you’re really set on watching them all in order, but otherwise, I wouldn’t sweat it, it’s not exactly continuity heavy. Besides that, I don’t have any… legal suggestions.

      2. tibia_ +2

It’s all on hulu plus, if you’re willing to shell out $7 for the month (or zero dollars for the two-week free trial)!

        1. lemonadefish +3

Take the free trial, catch up on the early episodes, then go back to regular for the current offerings!

  2. bgprincipessa +38

I know someone quoted in that NY Mag figure skating article, and this is likely the closest I’ll ever get to fame, so please let me have it.

So I just discovered this weekend that the same team that did the LEGO Movie also did Clone High and 21 Jump Street, and that the LEGO Movie is hilarious and everyone needs to see it.

    1. cosmia +13

I went to see the Lego Movie yesterday and it was a joy and a delight. A theatre full of kids and parents and only the adults were laughing. DARKNESS NO PARENTS.

    2. anachronistique +4

Yeah, I kept seeing people talk about other stuff the directors did, but FINALLY someone said Clone High and it all fell into place. OH. OF COURSE.

Also I laughed so hard at that movie that my chest hurt. Good times.

    3. lilsebastian01 +2

The Lego Movie was so good! Will Arnett as Batman is perfect. One thing that super bugged me was [SPOILERS!!!!!!] the stupid Nice Guy narrative. Like… Batman basically hands Lucy to Emmet at the end of the movie because Emmet “earned” her or whatever, BLECH.

      1. jhsaxena +4

Haha I didn’t mind that, because he really was a nice guy! Not a Nice Guy ™. Also it seemed like Lucy was about to break up with Batman and he was like “no, I get it,” so it would have happened either way.

        1. TheAntiHumorEquation +4

I felt that it made sense by the end that Lucy would break up with Batman, since he represented a identify that she had been trying but was growing out of. Not sure I 100% bought that she should then be with Emmett, however.

    1. NicoleCliffe +36

GIRL, I said *I* looked busted. I am much closer to that number now and I look GORGEOUS.

In atonement, I offer a new piece by Mary J. Been later today, who is in her sixties, is over six feet tall, and not even remotely busted.

      1. MalloryOrtberg +44

Nicole, don’t be too hard on her for misunderstanding….

THEY SAY THE MIND IS THE FIRST THING TO GO

*DISAPPEARS IN A CLOUD OF WIZARD SMOKE*

        1. NicoleCliffe +74

I always tell men “they say the mind is the second thing to go” when they fuck up, and then look pityingly at their genitals.

          Or I would, if I wasn’t Canadian.

      2. Lyzz13 +7

I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW EXCITED I AM FOR THIS! No seriously, a Mary J. Been piece will make my shittacular day so much better. (I just like her a lot, okay?)

      3. PonyAlong +9

Ah, Jeez…I’m 46 this year and some days all I see is a wrinkly, sagging desert landscape. However, on the bright side my “breast reduction” boobs still look fan-fucking-tastic so there’s that. Sorry, am I over sharing here?

    2. themegnapkin +7

Also offensive (or at least supremely annoying): women who brag constantly about how they’re still getting carded at 30 and never miss an opportunity to mention that they were born in 1984. There may or may not be someone in my office like this.

Question for our resident Iceberg Mama: whattttt would you have done/thought if there had been a surprise (!) fourth BB?

    1. ipomoea +11

I read that on Saturday night and then attempted to staple myself shut in utter fear. I’ve had multiple ultrasounds that assure me there’s only one in there BUT WHAT IF IT IS A LIE?????

  5. tekkah +23

Oh man just hearing Iceberg’s stories about the Bergy Bits makes me think three babies is more than I would be able to handle, I cannot imagine birthing a surprise FOURTH BABY. And those hateful commenters talking about her appearance can just do the electric slide to the left, right into that fire over there.

I used to just retweet links to ‘save them for later’ without reading them, but I’ve actually taken to hitting ‘favorite’ for them instead because I felt like retweeting them implied that I had read them and agreed with the content. I try not to retweet something without reading it nowadays unless it’s something really obvious, like “Someone’s scanning Sassy magazine pages and posting them to a tumblr!” (http://sassyscans.tumblr.com/)

    1. figwiggin +2

Why do so many people think RTing is total, complete endorsement, though?? (I’m not blaming you, it just makes Twitter complicated.)

  6. chickpeas +9

Ooof, that hashtag. Right in the feels, as the kids say. I just want to hug all the kids and also protect them from yucky people, forever.

    1. thebellewitch +1

Yeah, I came down here to say that hashtag is hitting me right in the Mom Feels. Ughhh. Doesn’t help that I read a CNN comment thread this morning about a 15-year-old girl who got shot after egging someone’s car as part of some back-and-forth pranking and there were a few people adamantly insisting that teenage vandalism deserves the summary death penalty. (I know, never read the comments but what is wrong with America, seriously.)

      1. chickpeas +1

Oh god, CNN comments are the worst. The worst! And these people, my god. I can’t even put into words my rage and disgust at this sentiment.

I am not a mom, nor do I ever intend to be one, but just this morning someone tweeted a #dangerousblackkids picture of a little kid curled up with a puppy and I just lost it.

        1. thebellewitch +3

Oh man. There’s one going around of a toddler in a bear costume that is KILLing me. Anyway, I hope I didn’t unintentionally come off all “I’m a MOM,” obviously moms do not have a monopoly on getting emotional about kids. I am sharpening my skills at being certain that any terrible news story could apply to my own offspring, however, which she’ll really appreciate when she’s a teenager.

  7. littlehuntingcreek +18

She looks amazing for a woman who just had surprise quadruplets in her forties, but seriously, why even comment on her looks at all? Looks are not the point of this article.
However, lookist attitudes are everywhere. I have MS, so I have frequent MRIs. I am in the hospital, having an IV inserted when out of nowhere the technician says, “You have beautiful skin for a woman your age.”
Really. technician person? Is this the place to be discussing my looks? Also, for a woman MY AGE? You mean I look younger than you think I should, instead of a like the withered hag you expected? What to even say to that? I just said, well, I don’t smoke, but I need a better answer. An answer that isn’t WTF are you thinking, because these people have needles.

    1. bluewindgirl +5

Oh man, if anyone wonders if the management of the body is political, please direct them to this article, and this woman, who had the effrontery not to dye her hair after 40. (Also: is dying your hair one of those things you have to quit when you’re pregnant, like wine and certain fish and scooping cat litter? I am not and never have been pregnant but I have feared this, which goes to show you how messed up our cultural priorities are.)

      1. ipomoea +9

I have dyed my hair during each pregnancy, it’s the only way I can really reassert control over my body at that point. I’m up for a roots touch-up in the next few days. Also: the cat litter thing is only if they’re outdoor cats! And even then, you have to basically make racecars from cat poop and then shove your fingers in your face. My indoor-only cat means I still scoop the box and wash my hands. Certain fish: you want to avoid fish higher on the food chain due to mercury amounts, but you can still do like a can of tuna a week (which is all I want, anyway). And my OB told me last week that I could have a glass of wine a week, and it was hands-down the best news I’ve gotten all pregnancy (of course, one glass gave me a headache, but OH WINE).

      2. dakimel +2

Back in the stone ages when I was last pregnant they advised not coloring hair with certain harsher kinds of color. I found my hair reacted weirdly to – well, to everything (hi, body, thanks for being TOTALLY INEXPLICABLE as you gestate others) – so I just used the temporary (28 shampoos) hair color (never was a salon color person) as it was deemed safe even back then. Probably there are tons of options, in this century.

(Man, I haven’t been pregnant this entire century. Or, well, I last gave birth on 1/2/2000, so I guess it depends on how you calculate these things.)

      3. MrsTeacherFace +1

A lot of books/experts say you should stop dying your hair when you’re pregnant, yes, although studies have yet to prove there is a harmful effect.

  8. NicoleCliffe +14

I saw the quadruplet article on Bergie’s FB, and was about to comment “who are these dickbags commenting on her appearance?” and then scrolled up to discover that one of Bergie’s friends had already said “SHE’S NOT 42!” and decided not to stir the pot.

    C’mon, though.

    1. NicoleCliffe +22

It was Eric. You have not met him, bc now he waits in the car for Steve to come out and play.

  9. bluewindgirl +4

That housing listing is sad, but also very confusing. What kind of single family home has 3 kitchens? It’s clearly not a McMansion, it’s just an old house that’s been carved up into apartments. That seems like a confusing and terrible layout for an actual single family.

    1. elsajeni +2

I’ve been looking at houses to possibly buy lately, and there are a LOT of weird listings like this — places that are actually multiple units, but are being listed as single-family homes and described as if they are single-family homes. (“5 bedrooms, 3 baths, bonus kitchen upstairs!” BONUS KITCHEN?) It’s like the listing agents are aware that there are people who aren’t interested in buying a duplex, but are really sure that, oh, if I can just trick them into coming to look at this duplex they will suddenly change their minds.

  10. bookwormV +7

One comment on the surprise quads post is “My goodness, what a blessing”. Um. Are they being sarcastic? (Speaking as a triplet, the thought of discovering I was having four babies and not three is horrifying. Three is bad enough. My mother still talks fondly about the day she got sterilised.)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine started airing in the UK about a month ago, and I love it. Why isn’t Captain Holt my boss?

    1. logicbutton +9

Maybe it’s like when people say “Well, bless your heart!” instead of “Fuck you sideways!”

    2. MrsTeacherFace +5

After the kids are here, you do sort of have to have a “congratulations!” attitude rather than a “OH NO!” attitude, because how much would it suck to be the surprise fourth kid that no one wanted?

  11. stuffisthings +1

I only watched one episode of that show and I kind of felt the actors were being under-utilized.

    1. ipomoea +4

NGL, I met a lot of my internet friends (how do I find a better turn of phrase for yall?) throught commenting on Jezebel. But, you know, we all grew up and left.

  12. Audley +10

One time I was at a bar with some acquaintances from the choir I sing in and I ended up talking to a handful of people who were all older than I was (like 35-50ish). They asked me my age (which was reasonable since I’m pretty clearly under 25). When I told them how young I was, they all exclaimed about how young I was and then they tried to get me to guess the ages of three of the men who were there. I refused because I can’t see any way that would work out well for me.

I see no possible situation where guessing anyone’s age, regardless of their age or gender or whether they asked you to, is a good idea.

    1. tjdubya +5

True. However, I will accept vast underestimations of my age combined with enthusiastic denials when I tell them the truth.

Maybe this is just yet another symptom of my chronic overthinking-it-syndrome, but I definitely only RT or post on Facebook articles that I have read fully and about which I could have a detailed conversation/shared close reading. Actually, it’s probably a combination of my grad student-in-English background and the fact that all my friends are real smarty-pantses who will engage with the material.

I do hate all that Upworthy/viralnova shit, though, and would not ever read/watch it, much less disseminate it.

  14. Anti_kate +6

Is anyone else having negative feels about giving the quadruplets cutesy matching names? Because I am having those feels and I need some validation. Otherwise good on that woman, I hope she has a lot of help, and I hope they all lead wonderful and full lives that do not include too much “no, I’m Kenleigh, she’s Kayleigh”.

    1. EPWordsnatcher +8

I am here for your validation! And yeah, goodness, those are some names. Upside: monogrammed things can be shared. Downside: forever confusion, by everyone, ever, compounded by the fact that they are apparently identical. (For the record, for anyone else reading this: Kenleigh Rosa, Kristen Sue, Kayleigh Pearl and Kelsey Roxanne.)

      PS: why wasn’t Kelsey Kelseigh?

    2. littlehuntingcreek +5

My parents gave all four of us matching names and my advice to all parents is DO NOT DO THAT

  15. PleaseInsertPun

I felt that it made sense by the end that Lucy would break up with Batman, since he represented a identify that she had been trying but was growing out of. Not sure I 100% bought that she should then be with Emmett, however.

  16. Linette +10

#dangerousblackkids is upsetting me because Twitter keeps flagging half the pictures of adorable children as “sensitive material.” Things they did not think were sensitive material

    * White people using the hashtag to call black people the n-word
    * A white person showing a picture of a black kid holding a gun and saying “Not all of you are dangerous but not all of you are good.” (WTF??!!)
    * A picture of a black kid with six bullet holes in his chest hooked up to machines in critical care

Things they did think were sensitive material:

    * Two black kids hugging a white kid
    * An adorable child with an enormous smile
    * President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama
    * Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
    * A middle-school aged kid cornrowing the hair of a grown white guy, both of them grinning their faces off
    * A picture of a black police officer protecting a creepy mustached Ku Klux Klan member
    * Two kids wearing what appear to be blue striped pajamas

I can’t even, guys. I love the hashtag, I think it was a great and witty and purposeful response, and I just . . . what the fuck is even happening.
