Link Roundup!

220px-Yellowstone_Natl_Park_poster_1938The Yellowstone supervolcano is going to blow up really soon and we’re all going to die, some slowly, some at once. Happily, I’m in the latter group. Do not clutter the comments with your “well, this article from a more reputable site suggests this is speculation and nonsense” foolishness. It will avail you nothing when the ash cloud envelops your body and your flesh is incinerated.

*

Here’s an important question: how many times a day do you pee? You may be familiar with John Mulaney’s bit about pretending to have a frequent urination problem and finding out that “nine” is enough to get you a prostate exam, but I feel like I pee WAY more than nine times a day. The Toast: classing up your Friday.

*

tl;dr, Jaya forgot to ask after Chris Kimball’s flaky croissants.

*

If anyone would like to talk about The Americans, I’m here for that, I’m current, I’m engaged.

*

lol, you seem to be under the misapprehension that being a professional athlete is important, sir. Also, MAN, in Canadian you take every second of BEAUTIFUL, PAID LEAVE they let you take (A BUNCH), and people would think you were nuts if you didn’t. “Why, if you don’t take it, maybe others will stop taking it, and the next thing you know…we’re Americans.”

*

WHY am I not an English pagan in 1964? (shakes fist at the fates)

*

WHAT. Okay, it may not have been true, but I’m gonna believe it just the same:

I’m sure I’m overstepping the bounds of Link Roundup, but Dirtbag Rickon appeared very late in the comments for the ASoIaF/GoT thread and I need to see SO MUCH MORE.

Rickon: *poking at fire with stick*
Osha: Leave the fire alone, boy.
Rickon: Whatever, let’s just go over the Wall and die. Fuck the fire.

  2. EPWordsnatcher +29

Ah, see, I read that “really soon” and figured the article was talking in geologic terms, where “really soon” means “maybe in the next couple thousand years,” not “probably Tuesday.”

    We’re boned.

  3. citizenchristy +10

Re: pee (and that bit, which I basically think about all the time, simply because of Batman the Nurse): I definitely use the bathroom more than nine times a day, once on waking, four or five at work, as soon as I get home, and then about four times between then and bedtime. Clearly there is an issue at work here.

      1. evieskye +4

My mom had the bladder of a hummingbird. Car trips were a nightmare.

Meanwhile in high school I could usually make it through the day without a trip to the loo at school (thus avoiding weird kinda-bullying, long lines during passing periods and getting the smell of illicit cigarettes on my clothes). In retrospect, this was probably not healthy.

      2. RoseCamelia +1

I know a man who posits that once a woman is done having babies, the kindest thing the universe can do is convert her womb to make more bladder space. He and his wife make days-long car trips frequently and he hates how often she has to stop to pee. But only since he first got her pregnant.

    1. SSVerity +4

Someone once told me that it is healthy to pee, on average, every 2 hours while awake. It means you are well hydrated and keeps your bladder and working bits flushed out and happy.

      1. citizenchristy +4

I only figured it out because my husband recently pointed out that I pee very, VERY often. Marriage, am I right?

      2. ArsenioB_Ham +2

I can come up with a ballpark figure but I’m pretty sure it ranges from like, 5x/day to 10x/day. You can bet I’ll be paying attention now, though.

      3. elsamac +2

No. But I am going to find myself counting today, because nine does not seem like very many times. At all.

    2. deleted2845473 +4

also at least twice between going to bed and actually falling asleep, partly because I drink water all day and partly because of a terrible combination of anxiety and insomnia that I just can’t break.

      1. TheRenleigh +19

The minute the thought “maybe I need to pee” crosses my mind I just get out of bed and go because I know there’s zero chance I’ll fall asleep once I start thinking about that.

        1. deleted2845473 +6

Exactly. If I don’t pee now, I’ll just lie in bed thinking about it/ wake up in two hours and have to go!

        2. Es_Petal +2

Yep, when I wake up in the middle of the night, if I’m not back asleep in a nanosecond I just get up and pee because it’s inevitable.

        3. nicoledieker +5

Me too! I have never peed the bed in my life, but I am terrified that I will someday. So I always get up and pee, even when it turns out I didn’t really have to.

    3. mbculver +3

I’ve peed 10 times today between 6 AM and 8.30 PM. This is about right, but I’m also on the rag and find that I pee more frequently whilst surfing the crimson wave than during the rest of the month. Anyone else find this too?

  4. ArsenioB_Ham +8

Someone dumb this supervolcano thing down for me: if it erupts, will the lava get to Washington DC?

    1. eastcoastanne +11

No, but the ash would cover everything west of the mississippi I believe, cutting off a huge food supply and we’d all eventually die from my understanding.

      1. ArsenioB_Ham +19

But if I’ve been doomsday prepping, I should be fine? (I have NOT been doomsday prepping.)

        1. jennycieplak +35

My idea of doomsday prepping is to get all the champagne, goat cheese, baguettes, salty meat and chocolate, and just drink and eat myself to death, because I am not going to survive long in a post-apocalyptic scenario anyway.

          1. jennycieplak +14

Also this was how I actually prepped for both the big hurricane whenever that was, and the imminent failure of all government due to the default on the national debt (neither happened, but I did eat well afterwards).

          2. elsamac +6

Whenever we get a hurricane warning, in addition to doing some basic food prep and laying in a supply of water, I always – always – buy a box of Cheezits, which I don’t break open until the wind gets really, really bad.

            It’s important to be prepared.

          3. RoseCamelia +5

If I bring more cheeses and lots of red wine, may I join you? No need to share the champagne with me, but would you share all that other good stuff?

      2. cuminafterall +3

The ash would probably cool the Earth down a touch for a couple of months, though, right? Like after Mt. Pinatubo erupted?

Of course, the volcanic aerosols from Mt. Pinatubo also increased the ozone hole a bunch. So we might have to worry about that again.

      1. deleted2845473 +27

I like the distinction between “total destruction” and “massive devastation.” Is there a circle of light to moderate devastation outside of that?

      2. BourneApprox +6

Oh, cool. The road-trip my husband and I are taking this June pretty much forms an exact diameter of that circle between Portland and SD, with Yellowstone at the epicenter.

Sorry, everyone. I booked a trip to Yellowstone this summer. It’s totally my fault!

        1. newvirago +6

My oldest daughter is working at Yellowstone this summer. Because her middle name is Wyoming. If you poke your head into the kitchen, she’ll be one of the kids washing the dishes.

      3. apple_pi +16

Why is Montana listed as Minnesota? All credibility gone for this map. GONE, I SAY.

        1. gracefruits +5

Clearly they didn’t spend enough time on postal abbreviations in eighth grade social studies.

        2. EPWordsnatcher +3

Minnesota was clearly engulfed by the FIRST supervolcano and its postal abbreviation was repurposed…briefly.

    2. tragicallyludicrous +17

So wait, I’d still have to finish my paper/general PhD stuff in Europe? Man, this supervolcano blows.

  5. cuminafterall +10

The thing people don’t know about this paternity leave thing is that Mike Francesa loves the Yankees and hates the Mets! If, like, Mark Teixeira took paternity leave, Francesa would’ve been congratulating him for being a family man.

  6. m98widow +7

The Americans is amazing! I have not seen this week’s episode yet, so I am not 100% up to date, but it is SO GOOD.

Also, I sort of love Arkady?

    1. madgehowlet +7

I am also in love and also behind. Elizabeth’s brilliant hair! Phillip’s fantastic exasperation! Margo Martindale’s general awesomeness! Nina’s perfect period eyebrows! (And, of course, all the plot and theme and action stuff is also great.)

  7. safvn +13

You had me FRANTICALLY searching “Yellowstone supervolcano eruption?????” and taking comfort in those “more reputable” articles.

  8. whittingly +12

This brings the number of Places My Husband Wants Us To Go To Where There Is a Supervolcano up to a grand total of two. Listen, I took a whole class on Pompeii and thought the whole time, This is intellectually interesting but I am NOT going there. The day I visit WILL be the day the volcano blows, and all I will have is the briefest flash of satisfaction that my pessimism prevailed. And then a friend of ours gets a job in Naples, and the hubz is all, Well now we have to go.

    1. EPWordsnatcher +4

Pompeii is super cool! Of course, when I went I was blissfully ignorant of the whole dormant/not-so-dormant supervolcano beneath my feet, co.

      1. whittingly +2

Well now I have all this useless trivia in my head about wall paintings and ancient sandwich shops and what to tell the guards to get into houses that are closed to the public, and how when that fails you should never sneak over the walls because sometimes they keep guard dogs in the houses, and what am I supposed to do with all this information if I’m too scared to go there??

    2. romastrega +12

Go go go. I really loved Pompeii & it is fascinating & you will not regret it (unless, of course, you are buried in ash/smoke/lava but let’s face it, that’s just so unlikely). The graffiti & “erotic” art are well worth it. And marveling at all the Italians picnicking on ancient ruins (seriously, after a lifetime as an American being told DO NOT TOUCH at every historical site it’s a culture shock/refreshing to see the Italians & their “meh, whatever” attitude).

      1. whittingly +19

My professor talked about the potential supervolcanic eruption as less “unlikely” and more “the government of Italy has offered people money repeatedly to evacuate Naples and relocate, and the Neapolitans are like, We live on this mountain, we will DIE on this mountain.”

Oh God, I don’t know if I can handle people touching things–picnicking sounds grand, but I’m one of those people who gets the vapors if I see someone taking flash photographs in a museum. At the Louvre I saw a tiny French child hopping up and down INSIDE an Egyptian sarcophagus, his parents standing idly, Frenchly by, guards reading the newspaper, totally unbothered. I got so upset I accidentally defaulted into German, told the kid to stop, and then this old man said, “Hey, you don’t get to boss us around–we won the war!” Europe.

        1. Christin +3

It’s fascinating. There are sensors in the water. And apparently NO evacuation plan.

But god, it’s so cool. Yes to the erotic art.

  9. littlehuntingcreek +10

Francesca is one of the first ones against the wall, come the revolution

    1. EPWordsnatcher +8

Shooting is too merciful for him. Feed him slowly to the supervolcano. SLOWLY.

  10. allofthewhine +6

That Rookie roundtable was really great. I appreciated that they had a fairly diverse selection of class and race represented. It just seemed like a really honest conversation among friends.

    1. GreenGrasses +2

Yeah I just finished reading it and am well-pleased. I could really relate to what a lot of them were saying about the ways that we still carry our prejudices with us, and oh man the part about food as an indicator of class was super interesting!

    1. EPWordsnatcher +5

That page is soothingly scientific looking (thank you, USGS). I will rest easy.

    2. BourneApprox +5

Aaah, sweet soothing legit evidence-based science. Thank you for this!

(Though I’m going there this summer so it totally *is* going to blow up.)

    3. Prawns +5

I trust the USGS because they tell me every day what is the water level at Spiral Jetty. They are so reputable as to be boring.

  11. WanderingDancer +5

I want to go hang out with those British pagans. Waving around swords and jumping over bonfires in the English countryside? Yes please!

    1. vmartinipie +7

I super enjoy how that one guy leaping around the tire is still in shirt & tie. Such a nattily dressed warlock!

  12. GreenGrasses +5

What I am taking away from the English pagans thing is that Bertie Wooster was a witch (see photo 5 in the slideshow).

is link roundup a safe place to ask about where are the galactic rabbit horoscopes for April? I’m using it as my anxiety vessel, yknow, instead of how I’m not a graphic designer and my adviser is MIA and i have to move and my teeth are falling out of my head. Please rabbit. Please.

one of two black women artists at the 2014 whitney biennial is literally LITERALLY the invention of a white man:

“Joe Scanlan is a white male professor from Yale who created a black female persona to promote his work, because he thinks that black bodies give their owners an unfair advantage on the art market.”

      1. mbculver +4

Joe Scanlan can be placed against the wall next to Mike Francesa when the Misandrist Revolution comes.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUGH there aren’t actually words for this rage and despair.

Me too. That was hard to watch.

Also, I had no idea it took that many bobby pins to become Clark.

  14. elsamac +6

This Yellowstone eruption thing seems like it falls in the category of “Things I Can’t Prevent, Adequately Prepare For, or Even Rationally Expect To Happen,” so I’m just going to pretend I never heard of it.

  15. haleycrain +4

I’m so afraid of apocalypse 🙁 I know “everyone is afraid of the apocalypse, idiot” but I believe I am genuinely more afraid of the end of the world than other people okay?!

  16. MrsTeacherFace +9

I would like to set that guy, and anyone who feels the way that he does about paternity leave, on fire. I am FREAKING OUT about taking care of a newborn, and my husband is going to be home with me for the first week. That does not seem like nearly enough time.

  17. Bittersweet

I've peed 10 times today between 6 AM and 8.30 PM. This is about right, but I'm also on the rag and find that I pee more frequently whilst surfing the crimson wave than during the rest of the month. Anyone else find this too?

An ultrasound after insertion? Huh. Don't they know how much those cost? And damnit you're already going to be paying for the IUD insertion. This sounds like a situation where a little research into the statistics could help out…

It turns out that a study done in 2003 and published in Human Reproduction found that most doctors can place the IUD just fine and you only need an ultrasound if the doctor thinks that it might not be right, usually because of a complicated insertion of complaint from the patient. But before this study, the post-insertion ultrasound was routine. So maybe only get it done if you think there might be a problem or you won't rest easy unless you know there isn't. It's expensive!
