Link Roundup! Toronto Meetup Info for TONIGHT!

tumblr_n00sevJHVP1s3hayno1_400We’re having our first ever Toronto Meetup tonight at 7:30pm at Sneaky Dee’s! 431 College St at Bathurst. I literally cannot WAIT to see you, and will be wearing jeans and a pinkish-red hoodie from Roots and winter boots. This information will be repeated in the Open Thread, tell your friends. We’re going to try to take over the back area.

Can you imagine how beautifully a small dose of prescription opiates and Tegan and Sara’s “The Con” through noise-cancelling headphones would go with this Tumblr?

Apparently, Hollywood will always find something for heartstoppingly-gorgeous white women over 40 to do, eventually. A little job in a flower shop, perhaps.

The NY Times thinks you live in a nondescript building.

In defense of being a regional poet.

Oh, my God, they have spent so much money not changing the stupid football team’s gross name.

I know I’m part of the problem, but, oh, man, I just will never stop reading super-long articles about Stephen Glass:

There’s no way for me to report, or even think, objectively on today’s news. After all, I was the Forbes editor who first unmasked Glass and his lies. This led to my one brief moment of celebrity when I was portrayed by Steve Zahn in the movie “Shattered Glass” (Om Malik, my then Forbes colleague, was combined into a composite played by — I kid you not — Rosario Dawson).

Tell me more! Go on FOREVER. Let’s rewatch Shattered Glass together.

Hey, food stylists, what’s your deal?

I have to have all of these shirts. All.

    Re: that no-longer-scared-of-40 article –

I know the reason I love Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep is because “they’re not looking matronly on the red carpet; they’re not looking matronly in movies”. Thanks, dermatology and plastic surgery! You’re the real reason women are allowed to be old in public now.

    1. mollpants +11

Right? Like the reason we love Meryl Streep has everything to do with how she looks, and nothing to do with that 50 Cent-Kobe Bryant mashup the other week.

I am so excited for the meetup! I am going to hug a buuuuunch of people tonight and show you the most exquisite condescension, like Lady Catherine. Can someone bring nametags and a Sharpie? (Delegating FTW!)

    1. NicoleCliffe +5

Also, just come in and find us, I talked to Sneaky Dee’s and they said we can try to do a gradual takeover of the back area, I’ll be there by 7:30pm.

Are there ever meetups in places where you aren’t? I MEAN, obviously I would prefer to be exquisitely condescended to, but Toronto is far away.

I vaguely remember Shattered Glass, just like I vaguely remember a time when Hayden Christensen was cool

Secretly a lot of us want to be Janice Poon. I don’t know if any TV show has ever done the things with food that “Hannibal” does (bird skull salad, BIRD SKULL SALAD).

      1. walkingthecow +2

That blog is so great. I’m thinking of throwing a small party for the Hannibal S2 premiere, and making the Chesapeake Ripper cocktail featured on there. Maybe have a charcuterie plate to pass around.

SO jealous. Sending Prairie love-vibes towards the Toronto Toasties!

Also, that article is horrifying. I wish I could come up with a smartly worded smackdown, but I’m left with sputtering “wha-…!?”

I am continually surprised at what people think is a good idea. He had to have put at least 5 seconds of thought into creating that assignment – how did no bells go off in his head?
Putting aside the psychological elements and what and how are comp sci students supposed to quantify that… couldn’t he have at least left it at “online bullying”?

Holy dear sweet Jesus. I have never been more happy that my professors were wonderful. And also that one of them was a lady.

Why did the link to those t-shirts come AFTER Christmas. Would have been perfect for my atheist liberal brother who lives in Georgia.

And yes I see that the real answer is a good sister would buy her brother a present outside of traditional present giving periods.

Happy lunar new year, everyone!! Happy Year of the Horse!

ETA: Aww, shit, I can’t resist just placing one of the pictures here.

    1. catoclock +18

Oh man, I own a lazy floppy cat AND a terrifying rubber unicorn head, I know what I’m doing tonight

      1. mollpants +5

Never have I ever before wanted both of those things simultaneously, but thanks to you now I do.

    2. msjinxie +1

OMG all those pictures at the link – I’m dying. Horse Kitty is pretty great, but the Horse Seal might be my favorite.

    1. rkfire +20

I really don’t understand why this is the hill they want to die on, especially since the franchise has a legacy of being late to the game on other race-related things like, I don’t know, integration.

      1. octopusgallery +7

Because Dan Snyder is a rich, white d-bag who doesn’t have to yet so by god, he’s not gonna.

        1. rkfire +4

I get really annoyed by it because he’s shown in the past that he is sensitive (and I don’t mean that pejoratively or condescendingly) to anti-semitism so in theory he understands the concept of how language can be used to hurt* but then he’s all like “but this? nope it’s all cool.”

*I do think him suing the Washington City Paper under that guise was a bit much though

I and my family are lifelong Skins fans, and Christ that name is awful, awful, awful. I look forward to the day when I can support my team without supporting racist assholery. Unfortunately I think our best hope right now is to drop something heavy on Snyder’s head and hope for a total personality change. (In my fantasy world, a conglomerate of American Indian-owned corporations stages a hostile takeover of the franchise, bankrupting Snyder in the process. The name is immediately changed and a good portion of the profits go to Native organizations.)

      1. mbculver +3

Dan Snyder is the sole reason I dropped my hometown Skins and now root for the Patriots, so you can chalk that up to him as well.

There is just something that sets off the perfectly content button in my brain about Things Fitting Perfectly Into Other Things. Definitely keeping that one on a backup tab for the entire workday.

Those shirts! I want all of my clothing to express the belief that the Queen is a lizard person from space.

    1. meetapossum +1

I thought that I really needed the cryptozoo shirt, but I REALLY really need the poltergeist shirt.

    2. phlippin +3

Those shirts made me smarter! I just learned about Russell’s teapot because I had to investigate the one shirt I didn’t get.

Just jumping down to say I’m actually glad I’m at work at the moment, otherwise I’d be all over link #2 and the accompanying suggestions.

    1. slowseptember +2

Opened it, looked for Tegan and Sara playlists on 8tracks, remembered I was at work, closed.
The Tegan and Sara playlists are gonna come in handy, though.

  9. embryoconcepts +3

Also, this reminds me to post a request for great Tumblr links on the OpenThread. Start gathering your favorites!

Things Fitting Into Other Things actually makes me very anxious. It makes me uncomfortably conscious of all the things around me that will not fit perfectly into each other. Healthy? MAYBE, MAYBE NOT

    1. msjinxie +7

Mostly I look at all the pictures and think “BUT WHAT IF YOU CAN’T GET THEM APART AFTER? WHAT THEN??”

  11. leider_hosen +9

OH MY GOD, DAN SNYDER, WHY DO YOU DO THIS. Why do you KEEP doing this. WHY CAN’T YOU STOP. IT’S EMBARRASSING.

I REALLY hope this happens again in Toronto because I didn’t know until today, and I work super close to Sneak’s but I can’t go, and I hate that. Have the most fun.

  13. Elizabeth +2

Sneaky Dees and the Toast – together. As if I couldn’t be any more homesick for Toronto than this exact moment. I would suggest a Vancouver event but it would be so lame and sad compared to this.

    1. PonyAlong +1

NO! We would make it fun, fun, fun! I would gladly travel the 800 km one way trip over THREE mountain passes (Nancy Greene, Anachrist and the Allison) to meet you, a fellow Toastie and other Van/Greater Van Toasties at the bar of choice.

Just make said event during summer because high elevation passes and winter equals white knuckle driving and anxiety overload.

  14. baby_crow +1

whoa I teach that food stylist’s kid! I clicked on the link out of curiosity since she is the only food stylist I’ve ever met and I was wondering what they even do, and bam, there her face is, along with my student.

  15. lightle +2

I had a great time at the Toronto Meet-up and also, SHATTERED GLASS is my most favorite of all my favorite movies. I watched it every day for four days in a row once.
