I’ll start: Lupita’s dress and lips and hair and speech.
She’s a gorgeous woman. Has anybody seen Blue Jasmine? I haven’t heard much about it at all, but I’m an old and therefore exist in a different place and time from everyone else.
Have you read a Streetcar Name Desire? It’s like that but waspier.
Streetcar Named Desire but with no compassion for the lead woman and a butt-ton of sympathy for her cheating former husband.
haven’t seen it, but my friend loved it (and saw it three times – but he also works at a movie theater, so I’m not sure if this was because he could see it for free or if he actually loved it that much).
It was hugely disappointing, and this coming from a big Cate fan. The dialog was terrible, the scene cuts were distracting, and…by god…we get it….she’s a sad/crazy rich white lady. Lawdy.
I agree, I thought it was bad. Couldn’t believe so many people liked it/it got nominated for so many awards.
It was pretty, pretty awful. Apart from Blanchett, who was fine (not exactly a role calling for range or subtlety), no one else in the movie resembles a human being; they are all cardboard cutouts being shuffled around to make way for the next plot point. Late-career Allen is reliably terrible about this; see Rachel McAdams in Midnight In Paris, whose character was inexplicably not billed as Castrating Shrew Who Drives Her Fiance Into The Arms Of A Flapper.
LUPITA!!!!!!!
She brought her brother! That was the sweetest sibling hug! Bringing a sibling or a parent or a child is the most adorable Oscar move.
BENEDICT CRIED WHEN SHE WON
Oh man…and he photobombed U2 on the red carpet too! At some point he’s gotta do something not-awesome to remind us that he’s human.
Penelope Cruz was radiant. And Meryl Streep was foxy as always. And am I the only one who appreciates how good Joaquin Phoenix looks with a mustache? Mmmm. Surely I am not the only one. I almost want to watch “Her” just for the mustache.
Lupita…..what can one even say about Lupita? She is flawless. When she dies her soul will turn into a star and it will be brighter than Venus.
You are not alone on loving that mustache. That poster for Her is haunting me.
I may be the only person (other than my gentleman friend who saw it with me) who thought Her was dreadful, but ugh, it’s dreadful. Two hours of ponderously slow navel gazing about the ennui of being a middle aged affluent white dude. Snooooooooooooze.
(ie, don’t watch it just for the mustache.)
You’re not alone! I went in already skeptical (because I’m always dubious about movies that get universal praise), but it left me really cold. And the sex scenes were laughably dreadful.
I texted my boyfriend last night when she won that Lupita Nyong’o is flawless, and also I am leaving you because it turns out that she has a brother who looks like a male version of her and you just can’t compete with that.
THE PEOPLE DEMAND PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE
BEHOLD.
JESUS CHRIST
I loved that he ended up featuring prominently in Ellen’s group selfie.
Right?? And he was cheesin’ SO HARD.

Lupita’s dress had magical fairy wind or something, it moved perfectly in every shot and photo of it.
That magical fairy wind is called Prada cut and tailoring. 🙂
Michelle Dean linked to a great, short piece about why we need to think before mouthing off about Kim Novak: http://selfstyledsiren.blogspot.com/2014/03/lets-…
Really, why can’t women age gracefully/not at all! Besides every aspect of our culture, what is it about the creeping disintegration of your main/only form of social currency that makes ladies so anxious? Worrying about your body’s inevitable betrayal is giving you wrinkles, so don’t do that! Your inability to perform the effortless management of the body is… well, it’s just unattractive.
I was dearly hoping Chiwetel Ejiofor would win, for a whole host of reasons. (I haven’t seen 12 Years a Slave yet, or indeed any of the Best Picture nominees, but I’ve never seen him deliver a less than stellar performance, so I can’t imagine how incredible he was in it.)
I don’t have an opinion on McConaughey’s win; I barely had an opinion on McConaughey himself until I shotgunned six episodes of True Detective last weekend and realized “Well, holy hell, this guy can act!” I had no idea; I really had unconsciously decided he was just a handsome, boring slab of man, but the little choices he makes as Rust Cohle, the tiny gestures and expressions, are knocking me out.
But that speech, y’all. THAT SPEECH. I’ve been working on a McConaughey impression allllll week in vain, and while six episodes of Rust Cohle couldn’t give me enough feel for his voice and tone, a loopy, self-satisfied McConaughey at an Oscars microphone did it in minutes. PARTY AT THE MOON TOWER, Y’ALL!
I don’t think I saw any of the nominated Best Actor performances, but McConaughey made a good impression on me with his speech and, earlier, with the way he worked with Kim Novak onstage. He seemed really considerate and gentlemanly with her. He’s very cool.
“My hero is myself in 10 years.”
…….no.
I took it as an expression of his always striving to be better, and recognizing that he always has to keep improving. It was an unfortunately chosen and awkward metaphor, but I never thought he was saying simply that he was his own hero.
I knew that speech was going to go off the track when he phrased the last thing of his triad “someone to chase.” He isn’t a gifted writer, but I think his intentions were good.
Yeah I took it the same way. I thought it was quite sweet that he used his speech to spread the message that it’s a good thing to want to be your best self. You can pick an abstract hero but you might not have the same impetus to live up toanother person whereas wanting to be the best you is something really tangible to live up to – and this is a from a man who had a lot of financial success but totally changed direction in his 40s to do the sort of work he’s proud of. I thought it was pretty inspiring really.
Yeah, it’s not so crazy at all. Didn’t watch the show last night but just listened to his speech because of all the hoopla and while I don’t fully identify with all he said, he seems genuine and humble. What’s wrong with trying to be a better person? Better than picking some hero willy-nilly just be let down by their feebleness or alcoholism or some skeleton busting out their closet. It’s kind-of gross that so many people or the media or whatever need someone to pounce on. I guess it is a business that deals in drama and when there isn’t anything controversial or people aren’t saying messed up stuff they have to pick the closest soundbite to abnormal. (Maybe people were saying messed up stuff, I’m sure Travolta’s behavior was weird, I mean his son did tragically die a few years ago and he might be brainwashed by Scientology.)
I had to go back and watch it today (you can see it here), and I’ll admit: it’s a little less loopy and a little more grounded than it seemed in context, at the tail-end of this legendarily interminable awards ceremony.
The basic logic of it is I must always improve, and I must set myself the task in a way that guarantees I will always be striving, never be satisfied. I can see the sense in that. But WOW what a ramble it was to get there.
But if you can’t be rambling and contented and expansive in your Oscars acceptance speech, where can you? And in any case, he gave me a whole lotta fodder for my impression, so thank y’ and allllllllright all right all right.
Were there any real upsets this year? I feel like I knew who was going to win everything, and that is no fun at all.
Also, Pharrell = performance of the night. Hands down.
I was dearly hoping for The Wind Rises to upset the Frozen juggernaut for Best Animated Film, but I guess the Academy thought they did Miyazaki enough of a solid on his retirement just to nominate him. (Bitter, party of one…)
When Lupita got up to dance with Pharrell my life got that much better.
I don’t think so, nope! all pretty expected.
It seemed a little weird that The Act of Killing didn’t win for best doc, and in my personal opinion it was terrible that Gravity won everything, but otherwise, all seemed about right with the world.
Alright alright alright
Is that from something, btw? I know it’s associated with many a McConaughey impression, but did he say it in a movie or something?
It’s his first line in Dazed and Confused, his first film.
Hee. Thanks.
I screamed and cried at Lupita. I cried at the first 2 parts of McCangu… (spell check) until he accidentally told everyone he looks up to HIMSELF (side note, his wife’s dress was PHENOMENAL). I keep re-falling in love with Pharrell, every time he does anything. Angelina & Syndney Portier!!!! Steve McQueen’s jump of happiness! ELLEN!
Urrrrggg I WANT to love Pharrell, but then I have flashbacks to “Blurred Lines” and then I get sad.
I agree with everything re: Lupita.
Also: “Adele Nazeem”
Also also: I would like to be best friends with Kevin Spacey.
Holy crap, that is awesome. Some serious “Malkovich, Malkovich”-level photoshopping.
HAH. It took me a moment to realize there was anything wrong with this picture.
Oh! and LOOOOVE to this quick audience shot of J. Law clapping w a happy full mouthful of pizza <3
THIS PIC OF J. LAW & LUPITA because its incredible and after nominations the media tried to create a cat-fight feud between them and they both IMMEDIATELY rejected the implication like, yeah whatever that is NOT what this is.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2571…
I LOVE THIS. These two, I swear. Good humans.
The pic of Lupita and Whoopi omgggggggggggggg all of my feelings about all of the things and just AHHH
A pretty predictable night, but that does mean I got 20/24 right on my Oscar ballot, woohoo! Also I’m really happy that “That Wasn’t Me” didn’t win Best Live Action Short (even though my favorite didn’t win either). la la la…
Also, Nicole, I hope you stayed up long enough to see Bill Murray’s little tribute to Harold Ramis! it was really sweet.
I did!!!
I thought I watched the entire Oscars show, but I didn’t see any tribute to Harold Ramis! Was it after Bette Midler’s song? Because I turned it off during that. I can’t stand any musical numbers during the Oscars.
I second your relief that “That Wasn’t Me” didn’t win. It was a pretty reprehensible little movie. Should have gone to “Just Before You Lose Everything,” a harrowing French short about domestic violence, but I’m not surprised the Academy went with the saccharine movie about a dying kid.
yes! that was my favorite too, but I wasn’t surprised that “Helium” won instead for the same reason you mentioned.
(Honestly “That Wasn’t Me” was so offensively bad I was shocked it was even nominated. One review I read described it as “odious,” which is… pretty damn accurate.)
OK! Let’s talk about how Jared Leto looked like a tool in his white tux (or was it the hair? The maroon bow tie?) yet Matthew McConaughey just looked dapper as all get out in his.
How about some love for B. Cumberbatch’s photo bombing (of U2 on the red carpet and Chiwitel Ejiofor and Ellen in the audience)?
1. Early on in the night I saw some Twitter kerfuffling about Jimmy Kimmel. What the hell happened there?
2. Has anyone figured out what happened to John Travolta?
re 2: Scientology?
He’s quite literally become a mouthpiece for the aliens and they’re still struggling with human languages.
re 2: He’s dyslexic and was reading from a teleprompter, so.
Dammit, that’s a legitimate answer.
Though the huffy cynic in me with the strange last name says, dude is an actor. Presumably he can memorize a line. Two words. The name he is presenting.
people keep saying he’s dyslexic but i can’t find any source saying he is. i think people confused him with tom cruise (who is a scientologist with dyslexia) and just started saying it.
I mean, the dude is an actor, too. It’s one line, just memorize it!
Wait, "forgotten" from what? Wasn't Ramis in the Memorium reel? I saw him!
He's quite literally become a mouthpiece for the aliens and they're still struggling with human languages.
He was definitely in the In Memoriam reel! But Murray also ad libbed that line when he was presenting the Cinematography nominees, as a personal tribute.
