15333127070_9d227f69a8_oI hope you’re all enjoying this lovely Friday. By the time you read these words I will be AT THE BEACH, so you know I am enjoying mine. I have to pack, so let’s keep this short and sweet — here are some highlights from our week together:

Mallory’s retelling of Thousandfurs. The resolution to How My Employer Put the ‘FML’ in FMLA. Roxane on the murder of Walter Scott. Katie Rose Guest Pryal on suicide, motherhood, and the weight of statistics.

An Outsider is Rebuffed and other New England novelsI already miss March Madness, don’t you? Wolf Hallnow with more wolves. Kari Mugo on navigating her identity as an immigrant from Kenya.

Jesus or My Jewish Husband? Ayn Rand finishes rewriting Harry Potter. Robots that make you think of T.S. Eliot. Might you be in a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta? Owls, ranked.

After arguing with me about how many books she should pack (“Fifteen?” “No. Eight or nine at most.” “How about I bring TEN, but all paperbacks?”), my daughter decided to prepare for our trip by writing some beach jokes:

Kid: What did the ocean say to the sand?
Me: I don’t know, what did it say?
Kid: Nothing! It just waved.
Why didn’t the oyster help his friends?
Me: I don’t know, why?
Kid: Because he’s SHELLFISH.

(Yes, I brought her anyway.)

I have waves to chase and sand castles to build. I am one with the ocean. I am content. See you next week, Toasties.

Your daughter is bright. And adorable. She is freshly sliced bread, not yet toasted. I trust you are preparing her for Toast feminism and misandry.
You have to read about Amelia, the Tropicat, and her "companion" Liz Clark, this is a great story with a surprise ending!

I HOPE THE CAT AND THE SHARK BECOME UNLIKELY FRIENDS
Oh shit that was actually really sweet :(
The surprise ending was the best part. Sniffle.
Your daughter will one day learn about kindles and realize how much easier they make travelling...
Your daughter is the best. Tell her the one about "what's the difference between a steampunk enthusiast and a dog on a hot day? The steampunk enthusiast wears a three-piece-suit, the dog just pants." Have a great trip!
