Networking would be so much better if the only people you ever had to talk to were the ones who hate networking as much as you do.

“Lonely men seek companionship. Lonely women sit at home and wait. They never meet.” I mean, that was in Abraham Lincoln’s time and now women can leave the house and everyone has phones and some have Tinder and such, but it seems relevant.

That is pretty much my networking strategy and it’s surprisingly effective. Secret: EVERYONE hates networking. And hence will respond very well to your opening line being “Oh man, isn’t this terrible, how much cheese do you think we could sneak out of here in our pockets to make this worth it?”

I used to plonk myself down next to other miserable-looking, solo networkers and say, “Pretend you know me. You don’t have to talk to me if you don’t want, but at least we won’t be sitting here alone.”
