Seems like everyone with an iPhone flashlight and a tool belt is hitching her wagon to the ghost busting train these days.
When I was a girl, we had to build our noise wave frequency calibrator generators out of rubber bands and old Victrola parts, and our fanny packs were weighed down by all the D cell batteries we required to keep our torches bright enough to piece the veil between the natural and supernatural worlds. But you never saw us profiled in the newspaper!

Yes, right, uhm…. ok, but this quote >“Most people don’t imagine women crawling through old dilapidated buildings and tunnels and talking to things that could possibly hurt them if not handled the right way,” Hawes said.<, I like this quote a lot. Can we have a fantasy show featuring this kind of conflict, please? Ghost hunter ladies fighting both ghosts and sexism?
Theo_Winterwood+21
That would probably be my new favorite show.
swordsnspindles+56
How about an all-female Supernatural reboot with all the back-to-status-quo plots removed.
Theo_Winterwood+33
Well, I’m currently about six or seven seasons behind on that show partly because I was getting tired of watching women die all the time, so I would completely be on board with an all-female reboot.
swordsnspindles+17
Well, I stopped watching after Season 5 due to a wise friend’s advice, and I’m ready for more. But with a better plot and, idk, character development.
Theo_Winterwood+33
Yeah, that was where I stopped too because I just couldn’t keep going, and have admittedly kind of regretted even the last few episodes of that.
Better and more consistent plot, better and more consistent and more actual character development. Maybe about four dozen fewer white characters while we’re at it.
Wait, if it’s an all-female reboot, does that mean that we get to kill the father as the Tragic Symbol of Parental Sacrifice in the first episode?
swordsnspindles+23
I think it’s an ok ending, what with the sacrifice and stuff. Just ignore the last scene with Sam coming back.
More consistent plot! No ignoring of lose threads (cue: that third brother who’s… kinda still down in hell…?)! Same level of fandom-awareness! More diverse characters, yes, and also realistic love interests.
Yes, yes, we kill the father. Let’s kill the father. Good.
And maybe also a more realistic connection to the non-hunter world, I mean… police MUST notice at some point that there are two dudes in a recognizable car driving across the country, credit card frauding and possibly serial-killing merrily along. Let’s find a good FBI agent type frenemy.
Theo_Winterwood+21
I was mostly fine with the ending, I think, except for the fact that: a) Sam should have stayed in Hell, and b) I feel like they yanked that third brother in right about when they realized they were renewed for another season, because up until then, it was heading down a trajectory towards both brothers dying at the end of the season to prevent the Apocalypse. And I was there for that ending, so the “surprise disposable brother and Sam’s return” thing was kind of a let-down.
And maybe also a more realistic connection to the non-hunter world, I mean… police MUST notice at some point that there are two dudes in a recognizable car driving across the country, credit card frauding and possibly serial-killing merrily along. Let’s find a good FBI agent type frenemy.
After “Night Shifter” (I think? The one with the federal agent and the bank hostage situation?), my best friend and I had this hope that the show would take a hard left and be about exactly this thing. Them having to figure out how to navigate the real-world ramifications of their actions. I mean, when you look at it from the outside, these dudes have dizzingly impressive rap sheets that they’ve never been caught for, despite driving all over the place in that very recognizable car.
Realistic love interests, yes. Who are fully formed characters whose storylines last multiple episodes and don’t end in death.
If the father’s dead and the mother’s the tough-as-nails militant hunter, then the mother is already about ten times more interesting to me than John Winchester ever was.
swordsnspindles+9
Agree with a)! Constantly undoing these kinds of decisions erodes so much of the actual emotional impact they have. I have no idea where they were heading with bro #3, maybe in case they lost Jensen or Jared. If they, you know, at some point wanted to act in any other series.
Yes, I was thinking about that as well, but then they kind of… dropped it completely? I can’t even remember. And the FBI folder on Sam and Dean must be HUGE. Probably takes up a whole room, but they never run into trouble… they could even explain it with MAGIC! but they don’t.
Well, they could end in death, but maybe only after a complete season, and the characters should learn a lesson from it.
The father’s dead, the mom’s a die-hard fighter type who’s secretely crushed by guilt that she couldn’t have been a better, more caring mom for her daughters. Work / life balance is even harder when you’re hunting monsters. Oh, wait, now we’ve got Nikki Wood from Buffy, don’t we? Still more compelling than Dad Winchester.
Theo_Winterwood+9
Yeah, I think I am just against the school of love interest where they’re introduced pretty much just to die and give the hero some extra sadness. That kinda thing.
I am already deeply invested in this family’s dynamic.
And the FBI folder on Sam and Dean must be HUGE. Probably takes up a whole room
And I would kill to see some poor first-day-on-the-job FBI guy get told, “Oh, hey, we got a case we want you to look at. Just a couple brothers from Kansas, no big deal. The file’s in that room. What, their last name so you can find it? Don’t worry about that. You can’t miss it.” It’s probably become the new go-to “mess with the new guy” joke by now . . .
swordsnspindles+3
Absolutely! Also because it’s just lazy writing, but it’s kind of endemic with TV shows. Coming to think of it, let’s get rid of the monster-of-the-week episodes as well. They serve no purpose at all, I’d rather have a season with fewer episodes.
I don’t know if it’d be a newbie joke or a thing the authorities would be desperate to hush up. Certainly they wouldn’t joke around when there’s pyromaniac demons around…
Let’s also make the monsters more human. Present them as horrible, terrifying beasts, and then mid-season give them really good, humane, compelling reasons to act the way they do, but also don’t give them any other way out. They have to be killed, but the hunters will feel terrible about it.
leslieellenjones+7
Don’t be silly. They turned the case(s) over to Mulder and Scully, who decided they had better things to do with their time.

I would settle for actually getting to see Ellen and Jo as the mother/daughter hunting team that was apparently going on in the background of season 5.
I’m still cranky that we’ve had like eleventy billion seasons of Sam and Dean dying and being brought back and fighting and making up and not a single second of it has had the emotional resonance of Ellen and Jo dying together and breaking my heart AND NOT COMING BACK.

the ghostbusters reboot has put me in a difficult position on having to decide what i hate more: white feminism or manbabies. on one hand it is cool that they did an all female reboot and i am growing stronger with every male tear that falls in despair, but on the other hand, i wish representation of only white women wasn't considered "feminism". And that the film was three white woman and one sassy black friend. I'm at a crossroads.
