Nobody should watch that second video. I’m for real going to have nightmares about it.

“Snake-fed baby eaglets are more likely to survive in the wild than chicks raised on other foods.”

Mallory, I know you guys say that “life is a rich tapestry” around here, but you yourself, just you alone are such a rich tapestry! I love that you post on such an amazing variety of topics from eagles to Atonement Theory. You are just so cool.

One of my favorite experiences as a vet tech occurred in California, when a woman came into the hospital with a toy poodle, exclaiming that God had brought this dog to her! Apparently, the dog had dropped into her back yard from Heaven. When we took him to the back, we examined him, and after shaving some of his fur we found talon marks on his back and torso from the eagle who had snatched him, and then dropped him when he didn’t prove an easy meal. The dog was otherwise ok, and I had SO MUCH respect for him fighting hard enough that an eagle dropped him. Talk about balls.

Conversely, one of my sadder experiences as a vet tech occurred when one of our hospital’s favorite clients, a mini dachshund who often came in for boarding, was snatched and (presumably, though your story gives me hope!) killed by a hawk while out in his owner’s backyard.

Oooooooooooh man. At Deception pass (Washington) my best friend was vacationing with his family, so hanging out, checking out the giant bridge and taking pictures, when an eagle swoops down and scoops up a toy poodle that a lady near them had left off leash. Eagle carries it about 100 feet before deciding it wasn’t really interested, then drops it. 200~some feet down into the water.

Pretty sure that little guy didn’t survive.

Last winter, the bay in front of our house froze over entirely and the eagles took to hunting ducks instead. It was like a charnel house out on the ice, half-chewed duck corpses everywhere. Horrifying.

Eagles are dicks. They’re scavengers who bully and steal other birds of prey’s food (like you noted) and when I was on a kayak trip in the San Juan Islands, the guide told us that the eagles find the baby seals on the beach and peck their eyes out. Not too far off the mark as a symbol for America, actually.

Just wanted to point out this:

as a perfection of graphic design. Form never better suited function.

I once saw a hawk snatch a chipmunk (I think) up like 5 feet away from me while I was out running and it was TERRIFYING. A few days later, I was in the same park and I saw an owl on a tree branch, middle of the fucking day, right next to the hiker/biker path, just fucking starring at the path, like he was plotting his next move. I stopped going to that park.

Box of fish? Oh, Alaska, you so crazy!

People, seal your fish in an airtight container.

    I fucking hate EAGLES, man.

Except for when they are attacking sea snakes. I approve of that.

Likewise. I saw those eagles attack in the first video and was like, NOPE. Time for some videos of animals getting along.

Also, I would have absolutely wanted to let that fox in, too. No telling how I would have gotten it to leave, though.

Yeah, that fox would have been on my couch in a heartbeat.

ETA: I'm amazed that her cats haven't been eaten by the eagles. When I was a vet tech in Seattle, I can't even tell you how many people lost their pet cats to eagles, particularly in the suburbs.

I am grieved to report that the eagle snatches goat video is a hoax. The filmmaker actually took a goat hide and stuffed it with paper so that it would be light enough to carry. It still looks freaking amazing, though.
