Mallory’s Who Is the Saddest Girl? piece had one glaring omission. Literally no one can be sadder than the sad girl in Stars’ (awesome) “Elevator Love Letter.”
Let’s revisit:
1. She’s so hard for a rich girl.
2. Her heels are high, her eyes cast low.
3. She doesn’t know how to love.
4. She gets too tired after mid-day (lately).
5. She takes it out on her good friends, but the worst stays in.
6. Her office glows all night long.
7. This guy is going to tell her lies about how they’ll fall in love by the morning, but she won’t know that they’re saying goodbye.

But is she so beautiful (and do you absolutely love her) when she smiles? That seems to be a sub-criterion.
If we consider All The Girls in All The Stars Songs to be the same girl, she will own this category for LIFE.
especially if she’s also the girl from “one more night”
the girl from “One More Night” is almost definitely the girl from “Your Ex-Lover is Dead,” so I think we have CRACKED THE CASE
Good call. Interesting that in contrast, the boy of all the Stars songs is super-quick to clarify that he is NOT sad (unlike you, saddest sad girl), he’s just trying to remember your name.
<3 u, Stars, but I just don’t buy it. Why is she so sad, she’s rich! YOU’RE RICH AND HAVE GREAT SHOES, LADY, STOP MOPING.
she has to work really late, okay, so I bet she’s a law associate which means her boss is definitely a dick. I’d be sad too! But also, rich.
She is totally a law associate. That was my first thought the first time I heard this song years ago. DON’T JUDGE ME.
She is definitely definitely an associate at a big firm.
If your office is glowing all night long, you don’t even get to spend your money, and that jerk is telling you lies about how you’ll be in love by the morning… and your boss is a jerk too. So it’s OK to be sad!
sorry, but she’s clearly a paralegal, at best. I’m thinking temp case assistant. the associate with the shoes pretends not to even see her in the elevator.
Ugh I know I should be thinking about the patriarchy but now I’m just gonna go listen to Stars
I don’t know how I missed that original sad girl post, but I’m glad to be directed toward it. “At no point is it clear just how attractive or translucent this woman’s face is.” hahaha. Also the first comment lauding Jonathan Richman. I saw him perform a couple weeks ago and it was pretty great.
when I first heard Stars I envisioned Torquil Campbell as a burly dude with a big ginger beard and let me tell you, I was never more disappointed to be wrong

Woah, I have definitely always thought that the opening lyric is “I’m so hot for the rich girl.” I HAVE BEEN MISTAKEN FOR SO LONG.
