I woke up in a cold sweat very early this morning, wondering how the Kids felt as they slowly realized that what had appeared to be an aberration of their times–overly elaborate restaurant dessert plates–was merely the start of a long slow trudge into more gold-leaf-based complexity than they could ever have imagined.

I love the people who cackle during the setup. “Oh! A restaurant! AH HAH HA HAHA HA this is gonna be funny!”
A big room where people serve food to other people. Absurd concept.
With in-studio skits, I always assume they’re laughing because it’s the second or third take and they’re anticipating The Funny. With a filmed piece like this, the cackles are harder to explain.
I think about this sketch every time I receive a plate at a restaurant that has dipping areas. Then I treat them with reverence.
I’ve never seen this before, but am HUGELY looking forward to the next time I’m served such a concoction. I mean, obviously, that will only apply if the integrity of the chocolate dusting hasn’t been compromised, in which case, I will be devastated.

Is that to say that from here on out, moving forward, all desserts should have a herd of blueberries, or do you mean that the herd of blueberries should be moving forward, bounding majestically across the plains, grazing on the fields of chocolate dusting?

I just forced my best friend to watch this last week because otherwise, really, how could we truly understand each other?
This made me so incredibly anxious, worrying about those people waiting for the dessert.
The thing that is missing from this sketch is me, carrying a pile of plates, stalking behind the new guy while he’s in the kitchen and hissing, “Hey, did you get Table 14’s dessert order in?”

Thank you for this!. I’m married to another KITH fan, but she has somehow never seen this sketch, and whenever we eat somewhere fancy, which is not often, I mention the sketch and decide to look it up and show her when we get home, and I never do.
I was at a fancy dinner last night and the dessert had four tiny dipping areas! I could not stop laughing thinking about this classic sketch, and I really wanted to ask the waiter if they’d considered making the dipping areas bigger.
