Go give Sam Irby (bitches gotta eat) some money for her damn teeth, kids, there are so many good reasons! Including:
3 i’m an orphan. i haven’t had a parent in my life since i was 13, and when i first started working at 18 i was too busy trying to pay my rent to set aside money for dental insurance. i was seriously just trying to have sex, take muscle relaxers, and buy cheeseburgers. none of my old boyfriends was like, “hey kid, when’s the last time you saw a dentist?” because they were too busy trying to put it in my butt.

Aw, poor little dental dams!:
In a rare instance, prisons in New South Wales started stocking dental dams after a local court ruled that men’s prisons had to be supplied with condoms. But a study found that only 4 percent of incarcerated women use the dams during oral sex with other inmates. “Women use them as little mats in their rooms,” says Juliet Richters, a sexual health researcher at the University of New South Wales and co-author of the study. “They are having no effect in terms of prevention for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).”

@brokeymcpoverty lives in my work town! Somehow I missed that.
Why haven’t there been the same technological advances in dental dams as in condoms? If people can work on making a super thin condom shouldn’t they be doing the same for dental dams? Or at least turning them into something that feels more like sex and less like licking plastic wrap?
Nothing says sexy like “Originally devised for use during dental procedures”.
They should make spray-on condoms/dental dams like that have that spray-on band-aid stuff.
Noooo, that stuff flakes off at the slightest movement. O.o
My dad only uses peppermint Dr. Bronner’s – for shampoo, body soap, beard lathering, whatever – so that tweet made me both howl and then cringe.
Is Dr Bronner’s like Mint Source in the UK? Which is, shall we say, bracing, if you get a bit of it somewhere sensitive…
absolutely!
I haven’t used Mint Source, but “bracing” is a kind word for it, yes.
I would like to add that Jeff Goldblum did a Reddit AMA and said if he could splice his DNA with any animal it would be a dolphin and his name would be Surf Goldblum. http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/20xynh/hi_t…
MATT. GET IN HERE. I NEED YOU TO DRAW ANOTHER CELEBRITY AS A DOLPHIN.
Animorphs made me think that if I could morph into anything it would be a dolphin, so yes, I support this wholeheartedly.
Animorph Jeff/Surf Goldblum needs to happen!
no way at “Surf Goldblum.” Does Jeff Goldblum secretly read the Toast??
HELLO, JEFF
SERIOUSLY how did I not know it was happening. #Goldblum4Lyfe
I now imagine the fridge in Jaya and Matt’s apartment to be covered in drawings of various celebrities’ head on dolphin bodies.
But shouldn’t THE TOAST be covered in drawings of various celebrities’ heads on dolphin bodies??
WHO IS WITH ME?
reading that AMA reminds me that I’ll always be a little (read: a lot) in love with Jeff Goldblum.
(also, whoever made that “Life.. uh.. finds a wave.” comment gets my infinite respect and admiration)
Aahhhh oh man, he is just DELIGHTFUL on that!
Ah dental dams. You see them once in sex ed in high school, and never again.
” The dental dam remains a product they can point to and feel acknowledged” EVEN THOUGH NO ONE USES THEM AND NO ONE KNOWS IF THEY REALLY WORK. great.
I don’t think I even saw them there! My school also didn’t do the whole condom-banana thing either.
Ha! My high school Sex ed was sll about horrific disfigurement caused by sex. They never even mentioned condoms-Sex will kill you!
I always did my physics homework so I could avoid the awful pictures of ulcerating sores
The very first time I had sex, I was all Safe Sex Nerd and “should we get some dental dams?”
Total cricket noises, yo. And then I was terrified that I would get an STD because we didn’t use them. (I didn’t.)
I saw a female condom (that reminded me a jellyfish), but I don’t think we saw dental dams either, though we were taught about them! (I would not be surprised if you can’t even buy them in small town Ontario.) (Although I don’t think I’ve ever seen them at the drugstore in big town Ontario either. NOW I HAVE TO GO LOOK.)
EMMYLOU!!!!!!!!
Is there…any situation in which douching your woman flower is appropriate outside of a medical context?
douching & dental dams: dont do them.
There’s an SVU episode where a healthcare outreach worker is giving out dental dams to prostitutes. Either the writers don’t know what dental dams are or they have really high expectations for New York johns.
oh my gosh, those Amanda Marcotte tweets are upsetting!!!!!
totally disturbing. ugh. i’m pretty proud of her for calling them out though. compilations of vicious tweets pack a punch.
So they are totally disturbing. I’m a little uncomfortable with the whole back-and-forth, though. Maybe I’m just cranky this morning, but Marcotte’s original blog post was in no way designed to win the hearts and minds of the other side. She might has well have walked up to a computer labeled “Anti-Choicer” and pushed all its buttons.
She is right. They are wrong. But the post they’re responding to is written to be inflammatory, not persuasive. If these responses were to something that didn’t invite the reader to fuck him or herself, I’d be singing a different tune, but I don’t think riling up the crowd and then pointing to the resulting mob is a particularly helpful way to deal with the abortion debate.
yeah, I agree, I had very similar feelings.
I generally like Amanda Marcotte, but most of her writing is cathartic rants aimed at the already-converted. Sometimes I really need to read a scorched-earth takedown of the other guys, but I cringe to think that the other guys think that this is our best argument.
She certainly sounds as fed up as I feel.
The thing is, though, there is literally nothing AM can say that won’t draw vitriol from a certain crowd. Those who hate her REALLY hate her and have no qualms with saying so. This particular kerfluffle started with her simply stating that she does not desire to have kids. She never said anything about anyone ELSE having kids, just that she, personally, doesn’t want to ever have them. The reaction she got was grossly outsized, in my opinion. I can’t say I blame her for being a little inflammatory sometimes if she’s going to get shit no matter what she says.
I agree with you, they’re going to hate her no matter what. And I also agree she has every right to be inflammatory. I’m objecting more to using the responses as an argument for why anti-choicers are so evil.
I mean, we know that. We know that because they wave bloody signs in women’s faces on clinic sidewalks. But using the level of vitriol as the argument would make more sense if she’d written something measured, like, “I enjoy my life and leisure time and don’t want to put my body through pregnancy.” Instead, she wrote a rant that she says she wants people to recoil from, so it’s not surprising the responses should be similarly over-the-top. (Though I agree they were way grosser than anything she wrote!)
Getting down to it, I guess I feel like she and Life News are almost using each other. They post something inflammatory she writes, she posts the awful responses, endless cycle where no one learns anything or becomes a better human being, etc.
I also think it’s weirdly disingenuous to say, “Hey, the only new information in that piece was that I don’t want children — so no one’s positions on abortion are relevant, and this level of vitriol just represents how they feel about women who don’t want children!” (I mean, I don’t think she’s wrong. I just think that presenting it as “evidence” like that is bizarre.) I mean… I guess, if you assume that 1) everyone who read that piece has also read Amanda Marcotte’s entire previous body of work, which seems unlikely, and 2) once you’ve responded once to someone’s position on Issue X, that issue is closed and any future responses from you to that person can’t possibly be related to Issue X.
Eff all those people. Eff them all right to heck.
also will there be an Open Thread today? or should I unburden my woes here?
There is always an open thread! Noon, but if you cannot wait, go for it!
I’ll be good! Thanks! <3

Well, that’s pretty much how it shakes out already, so no changes here. Recently, out of the blue, a friend of mine said “So, you … really like this Toast thing, huh?”
I grabbed her by the back of the neck, pointed her face at the screen, and made her read Femslash Fridays until she passed out, natch.
*Elsa is Emily’s friend wakes up on the sofa, in a daze. She does not know how long she had been passed out in front of the computer, but it is night now and Elisa is Emily is gone. She stands up, blinks, rubs her forehead. She does not know why, but she knows that now she must take to the sea.*
The article about mandatory minimums was about what I’d expect from a Mormon paper. Don’t fall into reading the Family section, and reallllly don’t read any comments.
I’m amazed a Mormon paper printed that at all, TBH.
I’m torn on the Dr. Bronner’s-in-the-vag issue vis-a-vis the peppermint flavor (is it a flavor if you don’t eat it? what’s the word I’m searching for here? or should I have been eating it this whole time?) – dries out the flower in the long term, in the short term makes it so deliciously tingly.
Scent?
Oh god I empathize with Sam so much but have so little money, pulling out my card anyway.

I kind of feel like there’s nothing wrong with calling on Ruth Bader Ginsberg to consider when she wants to retire. She’s the oldest person on the court and she’s had two several health issues, so I’m going to call shenanigans on this being primarily driven by sexism. And the fact is we really might have a Republican president up next – do we want to risk letting the GOP appoint someone else, or do we want Obama to do it?
