Anti-racists and racists collide:
A young white guy in a shiny suit and sunglasses appears to be leading the Australia First contingent. “Abolish multiculturalism!” he yells through his megaphone.
“So you’re cool with Greek-Australians?” I ask.
“Absolutely,” the guy says, pulling the megaphone from his lips. “Greek-Australians. European-Australians, in general.”
“So Italians are okay?”
“Yeah, they’re okay.”
“But back in the 1940s, wouldn’t your equivalent have been against Greek-Australians because they were the ‘wogs’ who were coming here as immigrants and ruining white Australia?”
He shrugs his shoulders, apathetic. “What was going on in the 1940s … we weren’t around in the 1940s, so we can’t really comment about what we would have done back then.”

CORD JEFFERSON on “the racism beat” is brilliant, obviously, he always is:
After a while you may want to respond to every request for a take on the day’s newest racist incident with nothing but a list of corresponding, pre-drafted truths, like a call-center script for talking to bigots. Having written thousands of words about white people who have slurred the president over the past six years, you begin to feel as if the only appropriate way to respond to new cases—the only way you can do it without losing your mind—is with a single line of text reading, “Black people are normal people deserving of the same respect afforded to anyone else, but they often aren’t given that respect due to the machinations of white supremacy.”

For a second there I was very afraid something had happened to the delightful Beverly Cleary. (She is 98, you guys!) Oh my god, if you haven’t read her autobiographies, DO IT NOW. “A Girl from Yamhill” and “On My Own Two Feet.” They are delightful, slightly haunting, and utterly amazing. She is just the best.
Beverly Cleary is NINETY EIGHT YEARS OLD?
She is! And she is a hoot. READ HER BOOKS, EVERYONE.
THE DOLPHIN LADY!!!! So many unanswered questions.
“It got weird”
YOU DON’T SAY.
The hustler “illustration” of the “story” is priceless.
Someone has probably made as much as bigfoot lady writing erotica about this.
Most of us would never j/o a dolphin on porpoise, but overall it sounds like she and Peter had a whale of a time.
Cetacean needed.
Well, for Peter at least, the experience was clearly orcasmic. I do feel sorry for him though. He thought they were closely atuna’d, but then she abandoned him and clammed up about their time together for several decades. Anyone would flounder after a betrayal like that.
Like, I knew what was coming, and I kept trying to stop reading, but then I kept reading and it was awful. My face is stuck like this for the rest of the day: D-:
“Her intraspecies needs are finally being taken care of.”
um.
If you weren’t sure whether Lilly was a Total World-Class Jackoff earlier in the article, that comment seals the deal.
He sounds exactly the only way a guy who drops acid in a sensory deprivation tank for a hobby could sound.
ABSOLUTELY NOT
re: those suits
I don’t ever want to see a man’s knees. And especially not in a suit. #no
Also that Cord Jefferson piece was unsurprising but heartbreaking.
Men are only allowed to wear shorts at the beach. Only then.
Shorts are also acceptable if you are hiking or camping, but only because it is understood that those places are where taste and style die.
As a man who owns 2 pairs of shorts, I’d also add, “in summer when it’s really hot and you’re not doing anything special.”
ETA: But death to short suits. Those are awful.
I blame Pharrell for this formal shorts nonsense.
What about the ankles? Cover those things up with socks, damn it!
Oh God no, this kind of thinking led us to the dark ages of the 90’s where Fred Durst could wear shorts that hit below his calves and everybody was fine with it.
MEN: Your shorts’ hems should hit the halfway point of your kneecap AT LONGEST. Almost every man in existence can get away with a 9 inch inseam, though 7 is preferable unless you are a giant from the last episode of Game of Thrones. Wear no-see socks for God’s sake. Yes, I know that the teens are rocking the high socks with shorts, but you’re a non-dirtbag grown-up.
Fuck the short suit though. The proportions alone boggle the #menswear mind.
I kind of didn’t hate the last Asos one? But yeah, in general, no men’s knees, please.
Disagree! All the knees, all the thighs, all the time.
YES THANK YOU. I don’t know how I feel about a formal short suits but I will have all of the shorts and all of the man thighs all of the time please.
Yeah I’m not sure on my feelings on man suits plus shorts, but I think men need to get on top of a shorter short right quick. I don’t need to see underbutt, but I would definitely like a mid thigh. Especially in basketball. The shorts worn there are a travesty. Its like women’s swimming bloomers.
I think the matchy matchy short in a suit I’m not for because it really does look subtracted from, but if the blazer and short are different from each other I’ve seen some good looks.
Agreed. Short suits are weird because they specifically look like part of the suit has just vanished but LET’S SEE THOSE LEGS, FELLAS.
Unf, yes. I am with you on Team Shorts.
Im w you lady! Unconventional, sure, but I’m on board! Dandified men are delightful.
Cannot co-sign. I do like a shapely pair of calves.
oh calves are fine, and I do mean FINE. It’s just the knees I object to.
We are reasonable people and can surely agree to disagree on where our objectification of the leg should start.
Sorry I’m gonna say it. I love the man short-suits! Particularly if the men look like they do in that picture, but even if they don’t:
It’s hot in the summer! If ladies at business casual offices can bare their legs in skirts to cool off, men should be able to as well. I always feel bad for the dudes I see in suits in the summer.
but they’ll wear socks and regular shoes with them!
Picture the pasty, hairy legs erupting from saggy, sad socks and a pair of black business shoes. (I also have pasty, hairy legs, but I at least wear sandals)
They can only do shorts in the office if they also wear business sandals with them and get a pedicure.
I’m picturing boat shoes.
Trying to picture what men’s “business sandals” look like, and failing miserably… (which may be a good thing for my psyche? idk)
I don’t mind the short-suits– it is hot, after all, but men wishing to wear them should have to shave/wax their legs, too. (I can’t be the only one who’s been told it’s not “professional” to have hairy legs in the office, right?)
It kind of looks like the men in the picture had shaved legs, and then they added a tiny bit of hair texture with photoshop. Because they don’t want to put thick leg hair in a magazine, but they also don’t want to suggest to men that they have to shave their legs to buy these suits.
Oh my god that’s insane! I can’t believe (ok I mean I can totally believe but I hate that I can believe it) that you were told that. I have hairy legs in the office all the time, there should be no reason why your boss is looking at your legs long enough to see you don’t shave. I’m so sorry you were told that!
That said I would request that all men (and women) should start wearing short shorts with hairy legs. Preferably men who’s legs suggest that they play a lot of soccer in their spare time.
Oh gosh, nobody said that to me in response to my actual legs! (I would have died of embarrassment if so.) It was in one of those “dressing appropriately for the office” seminars that college career centers like to put on.
(My actual legs are, today, both bare and possessing of a good number of shin-bruises. But they are hairless!)
Shin-bruises are THE hot accessory this summer.
Excellent, I’m right on trend, then.
I would find this acceptable IF the shorts went past their knees. OR a slightly below the knee kilt, if we’re going to get really breezy.
Capri suits?
I saw a shorts suit in the wild recently and was intrigued. Do you think they come with pants, too, like some skirt suits do? And then the owner has to make sure not to dry clean the different pieces different numbers of time or else the fabric will stop matching?
I’d like to see some cuffs on those suit shorts, but yeah, they’re pretty great.
Yeah, I have no problem with suit shorts, but I’m not sure how I like how they’re being pulled off here. I would almost say they’d look better without a jacket. Cuffs, as jenphalian mentioned, would also improve them.
Basically if these take off I think we as women should make a bunch of rules about what’s appropriate and what isn’t.
I like them too — they make the models look really young though, like they’re still too young to wear man pants so they’re stuck in short pants (which used to be a thing). Or like their rank in the company is so low they can’t wear the same pants as the bosses do. I feel like it would be a much harder look for a middle aged guy to pull off.
All the men with whom I’ll be competing in job interviews this fall are hereby invited to purchase one of these short-suits, stat!! Bwahaha.
Yeah, I mean if a friend of mine turned up in one of those I might make fun of him, but I also despise the idea that there are absolute rules of what you can and can’t wear and anyone who doesn’t abide deserves to be ridiculed.
Also mayybe a stretch but I get the impression that when people are like “no one will take a man seriously when you can see his knees!” the unspoken subtext is “that’s a woman thing, and no one takes women seriously.”
the unspoken subtext is “that’s a woman thing, and no one takes women seriously.”
oooooooh snap
TRUTH
It’s true, but then why don’t men wear sundresses? Or African-style togas — a nice grand boubou? Those would be much more comfortable and better for the heat.
Nobody does dressing for heat quite like the men of the Arabian Peninsula. Thobes & izaars for everyone!
Yes, I feel the same way. I don’t wany anyone policing what I wear, so I am not really comfortable policing what other people wear.
Of course I am in sunny california where the men wear kilts to work! (Sometimes.)
Back in the day, the racist political groups of the time wanted to prevent my grandmother’s immigration into England (she was Irish) based on some nonsense.
Fast-forward to today, when they keep trying to recruit me because I am whiter-than white (naturally blonde but dye it red, very pale skin, etc). They never seem to know what to do with the response ‘had your party had its way back in the 60’s, I wouldn’t fucking exist, so no.’
Are short-suits more environmentally friendly than regular suits? Because office buildings would not need to be cooled as much, particularly if the shorts suit is made from light material.
Go green, buy those suits!
You bring up a VALID POINT. If it means that the a/c in my office is not permanently set to “arctic wasteland,” I am in favor.
As I sit in my arctic-chill office with a heater going FULL BLAST at my feet, I agree.
In my experience in office buildings, the AC gets turned on full blast on the first warm day of the year, and getting building maintenance to turn it down is as fruitful as talking to a brick wall. I predict that nobody will buy the short-suits (shuits?) because they know their legs will be freezing all day.
Dude, my office is set up so that my boss’s office gets full sun all day long and is constantly a zillion degrees. So he cranks up the whole (small) building’s AC so that it is FROZEN TUNDRA everywhere else, including where everyone else works. It’s deliciously hot outside today and I’m wearing pants and a sweater indoors.
This is what Japan is doing with their “Cool Biz” campaign. No ties or jackets in summer, so they don’t have to use as much energy to cool buildings. It’s a great idea.
You’d never get away with a shorts suit in a Japanese office, though, for good reason.
Yes! We get to wear dresses in the summer and then have to sit in offices with the a/c set for men in full suits. Let them wear real summer clothes and turn down the a/c.
If I had a job that required I wear a suit I would be so tempted to get one of these. I mean, I already have little fashion sense, so I might as well be comfortable.
Thankfully I can wear a short sleeved polo on hot days here, though I don’t think I’ll ever test the library with shorts. Teen librarians can get away with more than most, but that might be too far.
Nudity would not make a DC summer tolerable without air conditioning. There’s a reason our ancestors wore like twenty layers in July, it was still a humid 103 out but at least that way nobody else had to smell you and the mosquitos had fewer targets of opportunity and your knees were properly covered.
*laughs hollowly at the idea of working in a building that is cooled at all*
(I work in a 1970s concrete monstrosity, which is a listed building for reasons I cannot begin to fathom. It gets incredibly hot and stuffy; the past few weeks have not been pleasant.)
I feel so bad for Peter the Dolphin! I’m imagining him pining over Margaret, maybe looking her up on facebook with her family and children, realizing his whole life has passed by and he was unable to heal and make a family of his own… he’s questioning how he wooed her, “maybe the teeth on the leg was a bit much?”
(I may be projecting a bit)
but I wish the story had gone on to discuss more of Margaret’s and Peter’s lives after the experiment. maybe the movie delves into that more.
“Dammit Peter, you should have brought her flowers before you put your teeth on her leg!! I do this every time…” He chastises himself and then slams his water-computer shut.
Wait, there is a Peter and Margaret movie? I missed that. I’ve read The Day of the Dolphin, and seen the movie. I think it has George C Scott. It’s more of an anti-govt kind of movie with talking dolphins in it.
I’ve met a few dolphins. They are inscrutable. I wouldn’t date one. Teaching men to speak human is hard enough.
so, that George C Scott movie sounds preeeeeetttttyy AWESOME.
…Toast Movie night?
Toast Movie Club – EXCELLENT IDEA
I know that there are plenty weirder and more questionable things going on the dolphin lady article, but the one I can’t stop thinking about is “Prof Thomas White, a philosopher and international leader in the field of dolphin ethics”. How exactly does one become a leader in the field of dolphin ethics? I would like some tips.
Read: “Uncontested international leader in the field of dolphin ethics.”
Unless you count Flipper, unofficial Dolphin Ambassador and all-around nice guy.
You come at the international leader in the field of dolphin ethics, you best not miss.
Well, before I read that article I had never considered the ethical implications of leading on a dolphin romantically only to abandon him when your study was over, so clearly it is a field where a lot of work needs to be done.
“the reluctant sexual relationship she began with the animal in an effort to put him at his ease”
I mean who hasn’t had a relationship like that
except with a human animal I mean
Can it just be said that AHP is killing it on Buzzfeed?? She is the greatest. And those Notebook pictures are… oh dear.
She kills it wherever she goes! She is a treasure in all the ways.
I think I would have thought some of them were genuinely cute if I didn’t know they were trying to be The Notebook.
My favorite is the woman wrapped in a blanket next to a painting that she clearly did not paint herself.
whyyyyy
re: the Notebook pictures: WHY
(I feel like the first couple’s are a direct result of someone telling the girl she looked like what’sherface from the movie, but the rest?)
I am so torn! One reason I have some fondness for The Notebook is because I like the clothes and other material culture of that historical milieu, so in that way I find those pictures attractive, but I’m so bothered by the fact that it’s just shot-for-shot of the movie…UGH.
No kidding. Photographer, please, you can do a Notebook-inspired shoot without, you know, setting it up and then placing the people into position.
Suits with shorts are an oxymoron. Checked with both husband and a friend who is chief of staff at a govt agency, both laughed hysterically and said no way, never, they would not take a man seriously who wore something like that.
I’m anti “formal” shorts for adult men OR women, but I support bringing the style back for young boys – it’s adorable AND practical:

This is exactly why it is inappropriate on grown men – it’s boyish. Just as smocky minis look like mutton dressed as lamb on any women over, I don’t know, about 13?
I’m dying to know what a smocky mini is. It sounds so fun!
You know, these:
Honestly though, I’m really picturing those short suits as something to wear to attend a summer wedding. Other than that, I just cannot abide.
I think the Notebook pictures are rather lovely, actually. They’re sweet and romantic and it’s easy to see how much each of those couples love each other. Not to mention, on a shallower note, how gorgeous all of the people are.
I also just get a little antsy whenever anyone makes fun of the Notebook for being romantic and sentimental and girly. It’s hardly a cinematic masterpiece, to be sure, but it just smacks of people who mock chick lit, chick flicks, etc. for being things that are made for women and that mostly women like. I’m pretty sure that if these couples were reenacting scenes from X-Men or the Lego Movie or whatever everyone would be talking about how cool it was vs. being all, “Silly romantic girls dragging their henpecked fiances into this nonsense”.
I like the pictures too… THE ICE CREAM ON THE FACE ONE OMG. And I like that they selected a variety of people doing it, not just “people who look like the characters” (like the first one).
I would see that, but the writer of books like The Notebook is super-disparaging about romance and ‘silly girly things’ himself.
The pictures just make me cringe a little, because anything that is both that nakedly sincere AND that nakedly derivative would. Mind you, I’m not into engagement or couple photoshoots anyway.
Yeah, I know Nicholas Sparks is an ass, but I’m not defending him, I’m defending the people who like his work. I don’t see how what he’s said publicly has any bearing on how anyone should feel about these photos, anymore than we would judge anyone else who likes something created by someone who’s said/done problematic things. Criticize his work for being heteronormative, classist, lacking in minority representation, sure – and one can criticize the people who like his work on that basis – but that doesn’t seem to me to be the main gist of the response to the photos. And it being derivative doesn’t bother me since I don’t see how the photos are any more derivative than, say, cosplay of other characters in other contexts like conventions.
Anyway, sorry, I don’t mean to pile on you or anything, I just found myself irked by the general internet response to the photos.
I get that. But, I don’t know, I just don’t think that thinking those pictures are silly and a little cringe-worthy is the same thing as hating ‘typically female’ things.
I can imagine that a LOT of the commentary on them is exactly that, though.
(unpopular opinion: Engagement photos are inherently silly and cringeworthy, even the ones the internet decides are ‘cool’)
Oh I’m so with you on the cringeworthy-ness of engagement photos. But then I think a lot of the engagement and wedding things-to-do are silly and weird.
I guess I just don’t ‘get’ it
I liked my wedding photos, cause I really wanted reminders of how HOT I looked.
But engagement photos make me feel weird and judgemental. I know a lot of photographers offer it as a package, these days, but I’d rather not.
Oh, wedding pics make perfect sense. You’re all dressed up fancy! And it’s a party! That definitely should be recorded for posterity.
Yes! And if people have traveled to be there, it’s an opportunity to get pictures with folks you don’t necessarily see all the time.
Oh, no, that’s not what I’m saying – I cringed a little at those photos too because, like you, that’s the response I have to things that are so sincere. My issue is with people who think the photos are silly *because* they’re girly, sappy, etc. Like, if you would have a similar response to a photoset of couples dressed up as Marvel superheroes acting similarly earnest, I get that, because I would too (and personally I agree with your stance on engagement photos – they always look weird/posed/cringeworthy to me!). So yeah – thinking they’re silly as a matter of personal preference/discomfort with these types of displays is fine in my view, but thinking they’re silly because they’re girly is what I have an issue with. It’s a fine distinction, for sure.
I also tend to think engagement pictures are cringe-y. I have a feeling that in 30 years, people will be looking at them going “Geez, why are you guys posing with Scrabble tiles and Iphones?” in the same way that I look at my dad’s wedding photos from the 70s (that he took, not that he was in) and go “Dad, why do you have all these photos of people soft-focus superimposed over the sheet music to a sappy song?”
My parents’ 70s wedding album has a photo of my mom looking wistful, with a soft-focus photo of my dad superimposed in the upper right hand corner of the page (like she’s thinking of him), and vice versa for my dad “dreaming of [mom]”. It’s so gloriously cheesy I can’t stand it.
Also, there were definitely wedding bonnets/floppy hats going on, both with the bride and the bridesmaids.
Yes, for me, what gave me pause was that many of the pictures were sort of shot-for-shot replicas of scenes from the movie. Which, if you’re really into that movie, is cool, but I think you could take inspiration from The Notebook without just reproducing it exactly.
For example, here the couple used the movie “Up” as an inspiration, but none of the images (other than the tie one) are really shots from the film. It just demonstrated a little more…creativity…I guess?
Anyway, I am fond of The Notebook but I wouldn’t want my engagement pictures to be a cosplay of The Notebook, or of any other thing I really liked. YMMV
Yeah I thought they were cute! But I’ve also never seen the movie, so I guess I thought that maybe both characters die tragically at the end so it was a weird thing to re-enact? I dunno. But I want like all of those swimsuits/polka dot dresses so.
well, they die, but at the same time in each other’s arms after a long wonderful life together! so… it’s pretty sweet.
Mr.B_Ham and I have a long-standing agreement to “Notebook it” when our time comes.
as someone who isn’t necessarily into romance books or movies, the scenes when they are old are the best parts of the movie by far. Touching depiction of a couple when one member has Alzheimers and just in general was why I enjoyed the movie. The times when they were young, eh, were fine.
Doesn’t the Notebook end sadly? I haven’t seen it but just based on that author’s formula…I mean, I wouldn’t get Titanic themed engagement photos (although it’s been done, for some goddamn reason). Or dress up like Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn for my wedding photos. Or dress up like Anastasia Romanov for my debutante photos, etc. A PORTENCE OF DISASTER, PEOPLE.
Hmmmm… maybe I would want to dress up as Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn for engagement photos. “Everyone! I’ve bewitched him into loving me!”
“I got mine, bitches.”
I want to get engaged just to have an “I got mine, bitches” themed photo shoot. Are any toasties photographers? Because I feel like any other photog just wouldn’t do it justice.
I cannot stand The Notebook. Not because it’s a chick flick, but because I felt like the guy she dumped to be with Ryan Gosling (who was kind of a jerk at times) got shortchanged. She broke his heart. I have Notebook ISSUES
I would watch a movie about the people who get jilted in romantic comedies so the unlikely protagonists can get together in the end. It’ll be like Wicked, just for the boring but nice fiances/gfs/bfs who get left behind for the exciting, quirky, sometimes asshole-ish ex from THE PAST.
There is this movie! It’s called The Baxter, and the concept is better than the execution.
That is one of the many things I love about “Enchanted”: the partners which get cast off in order that the star-crossed lovers can get together actually end up running away together in the end.
Neither “wrong partner” is made out to be a bad person (which is great), and since Adela Dazeem’s character is secretly a big romantic, she is totally into getting to spontaneously run off on an adventure with a fairytale prince/this arrangement. (Also, said prince is James Marsden, who was also the dumped fiancee in The Notebook… and Superman Returns, and X-men, etc.)
I mean, it’s not realistic or incredibly feminist, but they do make an attempt to show that everyone is happy in the end.
James Marsden’s typecasting as the jilted dude makes me laugh so hard for some reason. I’M SORRY, BRO! YOU’RE PERFECTLY NICE!
(And in Spider-Man 2! Mary Jane leaves him at the altar, no less!)
I forgot about that! It is hilarious how he’s bizarrely become That Guy (which no heroine wants).
Which is nothing short of ridiculous, as I’d take Marsden over Tobey Googley Eyes Maguire in a nanosecond (spidey sense or no spidey sense).
Because he was secretly waiting for Liz Lemon.
The Golden Dawn thing is so weird. I saw John Oliver’s spot on them on his show recently, and it shook my faith in Europe, ha. I think as a liberal American we feel like Europe has their shit together in a way that we will never know or understand, and to hear that there is a general issue with right wing anti-immigration groups in 2014 is a reality check I suppose.
That story though is so well written – and unions, right? I live in Philly and the unions here are really sketch-tastic. My in-laws have deep roots in the Philly unions and I have heard some STORIES. I get why they are so important, but it seems like there can be an easy hop over the fence into mob mentality.
Man talking to fairly educated, lefty kinda middleaged European dudes and having them consistently out of nowhere break into antisemitic conspiracy theory or start chatting about how blacks are apes is an experience, I’ll tell you. Europe “got its shit together” in the exact same way as the country club that never got the memo on integration. But with more murder, I guess.
I was on the fence about Damian Lewis as Henry VIII, but those pictures are winning me over!
I am a little torn up about the Love Actually moppet playing Rafe Sadler, mostly because I had a lil book-crush on grown-up Rafe Sadler. The name Rafe deserves a face capable of growing a convincing stubble, don’t you think?
(Also, if you are aware of any Wolf Hall fanfiction in which Cromwell’s smart daughter survives to adulthood & Rafe Sadler courts her in a clever & charming fashion, please direct me to it)
You’re right. That casting is all wrong.
Who did they cast as Rafe? IMDB is being unhelpful and “the Love Actually moppet” doesn’t actually narrow it down.
Thomas Brodie-Sangster. He’s in Game of Thrones as Jojen Reed right now.
He is SUCH a moppet. And yep, totally wrong for the role. We need someone more…smolder-y.
I’m really looking forward to Mark Rylance’s Cromwell.
I went to high school with the Fancy Person! This is so exciting.
Men’s suits, 30% off!
Multnomah County Library’s response to that tweet makes it even better.
Oh that is *awesome*!
CORD! Cord. Seriously…. Black men quoting James Baldwin is my kryptonite. I am now a puddle on the floor.
“She was amused to find that during rare moments of contact with the outside world (mostly on the telephone) Peter talked “very loudly and in a competitive way” over the top of her.”
GOD, typical male.
I am thoroughly delighted that I read some of these links earlier and thought to myself.. I hope they come up in todays link round up and lo! It has happened.
I am refusing to read the Washington Post article that has enraged everyone today, but choosing to interpret the results as filtered down to me as “having fewer men in your life lessens your chance of being raped.”
So, how’s that Toastie commune coming along then?
I think we should all read “the Gate to Women’s Country” by Sheri Tepper to inspire us
Lynn Beisner at Reality Check has a heart-breaking and intense reply to the article in question. (Major trigger warnings http://rhrealitycheck.org/article/2014/06/10/priv…
I like cute little man legs but those shorts gotta be shorter and also not a suit.
I CAN’T EVEN WITH THE DOLPHIN LADY STORY NEWP.
I like cute little man legs but those shorts gotta be shorter and also not a suit.
I CAN'T EVEN WITH THE DOLPHIN LADY STORY NEWP.
I am torn about the shorts suits. On the one hand, I think everyone should be able to wear what they like, and wearing trousers in the heat is awful. On the other, they make their wearers look like schoolboys. Tricky.
