The cost of being exposed to HIV while uninsured:
That pharmacist at Walgreen’s is still one of my favorite people in the world. He had one of the medications, but not the other, and he managed to locate it at another pharmacy in town and have it brought over ASAP. When it came time to pay, he first gave me the entire bill: $780 for one of the medications, and $590 for the other. I did have to pay in full, but he took nearly a full hour out of his schedule to help me research rebate programs through the drug companies. I wasn’t eligible for the program that paid for my partner’s drugs in their entirety, but these two pharmaceutical companies (and many others, I’ve since learned) had programs to help offset the cost of medications for those paying out of pocket.

A brief, but informative history of the Miranda warning:
Though Berliner practiced law to support his large family, his passion lay in fine art and letterpress printing. Sensing a business opportunity, he began printingMiranda warning cards on sturdy vinyl (so that they could go through the wash) and sent samples to “every law enforcement agency in the nation.” Berliner sold tens of thousands, putting his script in the hands of police officers across the nation.

Praise jebus for Planned Parenthood, thorough physicians and compassionate pharmacists. Someday I hope we can praise jebus for single-payer healthcare.
Oh, it’s too hot outside alright. I’ve decided my new goal in life is to own homes in both hemispheres so I can avoid this whole “summer” thing outright. Also, I sweat A LOT. Do all of you?
Yesterday I got to play the “is that sweat running down my back or is it a tick oh god get it off get it off get it off” game. All day. (That should answer your question in the grossest way possible, I think?)
Sweat running down the back is the GROSSEST FEELING AHHHHH
Also, if you have them, sweat between the boobs just makes me feel like all is lost.
I sweat SO MUCH and I live in Atlanta, so it’s not just hot here, it’s also humid as all hell. Sometimes walking outside is like walking into a wall of choking hotness, it’s awful.
The humidity really does make a difference – I say this as someone who grew up in the desert and now lives on the East Coast, so I’m obviously an expert. It’s a dry heat!
Me too. Grew up in the desert. Then 23 adult years in the Northeast (US). I found a 15 degree (Fahrenheit) correlation. 85 humid degrees feels to me, and affects me the same, like 100 degrees in the desert. How does that feel to your inner gauge? How does yours differ from mine, please?
That said, I want to punch ignoramuses who rattle on about dry heat. In the desert where I grew up it was 112 f-ing degrees in the *shade* of my mother’s plum tree *every* day for *five* months straight every year. That translates to high 90s in humidity. In. The. Shade! What was the temp on my walk home from school, on my bike ride to the library, out in the sun? Without a break for five months. F-ing morons have no idea what life-threatening heat is like.
I’m getting to the point where I wonder if I should even shower, when walking outside leaves me drenched in sweat by the time I get to work.
Right?? I have this thought daily. I’m usually sweating before I even leave the house, like what’s the point?
I think I sweat an average amount for a human, but 90% of the sweat is concentrated directly under my boobs. It gets uncomfortable.
Boob sweat is the WORST, I feel ya.
Speaking from someone in that other hemisphere, it’s so cold here right now. I know ‘cold’ is relative, but really. This house is a lot colder than our last one. I’m sitting here with thick socks, jeans, a hoodie, a scarf and a beanie on. Inside, with the fire going.
BRRRR!
Minus the scarf and beanie, that sounds delightful!
It is pretty awesome. Frankly, the fire isn’t as effective as the electric heater and probably costs more to run but it’s got that primal awe thing going for it 🙂
Yeah, that sounds completely delightful right about now. I long for sweaters!
I’m the opposite–I audibly groaned just thinking about the fact that the days are getting shorter. Wanna go in together and trade places at the equinoxes? Summer forever, winter never!
I agree! ENDLESS SUMMER.
Best idea!!! House swapping for the heat and cold averse!
I never did sweat very much until I started exercising regularly. But now I sweat a BUNCH. I sweat if I run 400 meters. I sweat if I eat a hot bowl of oatmeal. I choose to believe that this means my body has become better at cooling itself, but it’s not super pleasant!
ME TOO
On the one hand, I appreciate my body’s attempts to watch out for me; on the other hand, I really dislike giving myself awkward sponge baths at work.
See, I thought that maybe if I started exercising regularly, I would get all my sweat out then and stop sweating when I do tiny things like washing the dishes. Of course, I also operate under the misapprehension that my body has a reserve of sweat that can, in fact, be exhausted. (It can never be exhausted!)
I’ve heard that this happens because our bodies are dumb and can’t tell the difference between “doing a quick burst of physical activity and then stopping” and “warming up with a quick burst of physical activity in preparation for running 10,000 miles.” When you exercise a lot, your body starts to think the latter is more likely and begins sweating like crazy at lower levels of exertion.
Then again, this might have been from a pop science nonsense piece?
/i’ve heard this too, but I thought it was my trainer trying to make me feel better for sweating like a pig during warm up.
I sweat really easily, too! I can’t tell whether it’s exercise related though. I’ve been going to the gym regularly since I was in middle school and my mom decided that I needed to exercise more. (She was right.)
Speaking of, does anyone who exercises regularly find that if they miss several days they have trouble sleeping? If I go three or four days without, I tend to toss and turn more and am pretty much guaranteed to wake up in the middle of the night and not fall back to sleep for aaages.
Yes! The sleeping thing happens to me too.
I now carry an honest-to-goodness handkerchief with me on my morning commute to mop my face. Goddamn DC swampland.
I think I’m ::thisclose:: to doing the same. I’m tired of using my hand to stop the sweat running down my forehead while other commuters give me the side-eye. Glad to know it’s just not me!
I always wonder at the people who wear their full suits to work in DC summer weather and then take off their jackets in the office. I do the exact opposite (walk in a cami to work, then layer up in the Artic wasteland of my office), so I don’t understand how they don’t just melt into a puddle.
Virginia’s finally hit that point where I step outside and my glasses immediately fog over from the nightmare mosquito steam bath that is, well… Virginia. Give me a frigid winter snowstorm any day; you can always put on a heavier coat, when it gets too hot there’s a practical limit to how much you can take off without bleeding to death.
I keep sweating in my sleep! I know it is because I insist on sleeping under a blanket for comfort reasons but my boyfriend has to keep the room at 70 for the beer he just brewed, that is not hot enough for night sweats!
The beer lives in the bedroom?
While it’s fermenting it has to stay at a constant temperature, and his apartment doesn’t have central air. He has an AC unit in his room and he doesn’t pay for utilities so he just keeps the AC on and the beer in his room until it’s time to keg it. It’s better now that he put the airlock in, there was a hose bubbling up beer goo into this bucket for a while while the yeast was getting crazy (if you don’t have a hose in then pressure builds up and it could explode beer goo over everything) and the whole room smelled like a brewery.
tl;dr yeah, the beer lives in the bedroom.
Autumn, always Autumn; sun without the heat, the coloured landscape, sweaters and boots, chilly nights and snuggle blankets…I could go on and on!
Ugh, I sweat so much, especially my face, the second I move more than two feet at a time. My job involves a lot of moving around in spaces that are often poorly air conditioned, so basically I just feel incredibly gross all day long from the sweat dripping down my face. 100% pro skipping out on all this summer nonsense.
Ok, who else likes summer? I fucking love summer. I will take 90 degree heat and crop tops and beaches over your dreary, existential autumns ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. WHO’S WITH ME?
Summer is the best! I love being in as little clothing as possible and bare feet. Plus all the sunshine! Love it!
nope nope nope going back upthread to hang out with my fellow sweaty-people-who-prefer-mild-weather
We’re waiting for you with open arms and sweaty pits.
Me! Me! I am so happy to get out of the office air conditioning at the end of the day, it’s ridiculous. Give me a beer and an outdoor patio to drink it on, and I am a happy camper.
I’ll give up the sunburn, but other than that? NOPE DON’T CARE LOVE SUMMER. I love the sun and the Vitamin D hit, I love reading with my feet up in the sun, I love being WARM REALLY WARM (even though it comes along with being too hot sometimes) for this chronically chilly person.
Over the weekend my husband went fishing on a river that disgorges into the Lake, and I went with expressly to sit underneath a huge ash tree in the shade, reclining with my feet up, reading a book and drinking shandy, and it was unutterably perfect. There was a brisk breeze off the lake and it was perfect.
Summer is the best! I was just talking about this the other day. Even though it’s hot, you can sit outside in the shade and drink and be relatively comfortable. Winter offers so such luxury. It’s freezing and you’re stuffed in a million layers of clothes. No thanks!
I liked summer a lot better when I had air conditioning. My favourite season is winter, when it consistently stays below 0 (celcius) so the snow stays until March at least. I just really love being bundled up in winter clothing.
I love summer, but part of that is that I also love complaining about summer. Does that count?
YES.
Also, bikinis. I am really fond of bikinis. And floppy beach hats. These are such good things.
Summer is SUPPOSED to be hot as shit and that is why it’s relaxing! No one expects you to work hard or move quickly when it’s 90 degrees! I live in San Francisco so I basically want to die. Going to my homeland tomorrow for some sweaty good times though.
The benefit of living in a place that is a frozen wasteland half the year is that I really really appreciate the short, moderately-warm, low-humidity summers. I wouldn’t give them up for ANYTHING.
(although I love autumn, too, because autumn still isn’t winter)
Yes! It snows 9 months a year, here, but when summer does arrive, it is glorious and perfect.
I loved summer when I had more free time and access to ocean beaches. This summer in the midwest is not as good, though I’ll take it over winter any day.
I love it. All of it. Swamp humidity, sweat, finding shade, cold drinks, bare legs and arms, sunshine, swimming. It is all good even when it’s bad.
CENTER STAGE! I am so excited for this coverage I might have to personally sponsor a series. Is one Center Stage piece per week enough for 2015?!
It’s the bare minimum. I will sponsor the remainder and also subsidize everyone’s Cooper Nielsen tattoos. (I’ve been saving $$ my whole life for this moment!!)
“She’s a heartbeat away from tattooing your name on her ass” is one of my favorite quotes of the entire movie. And there are so so so many great quotes.
“I’m the best goddamn dancer in the American Ballet Academy! Who the hell are you?! NOBODY”
“How do you expect 3,000 people to watch you lift your arm if you don’t do it beautifully?!”
“I’m knitting a sweater”
“You didn’t have the feet. I don’t have the heart”
I could go on forever.
Please do go on forever!
“Cooper, you’re an amazing dancer, and you’re a great choreographer, but as a boyfriend? You kinda suck.” (YOU GO, JODY SAWYER.)
“Juliette Simone. Please. Her name is Julie Simon and she grew up in Perth Amboy. Her father managed a Wal-Mart.”
More that I actually say/reference all the time:
“whatever you feel, just dance it”
“What did you go to a special bitch academy or something”*
“I’d be spending my best years waving a rose back and forth…”
“She’s so good/ yeah just ask her”
*Great story of Center Stage bringing ppl together: First day at a new job that flew out of my mouth in a stressful situation and my new co-worker just said “What that a Center Stage reference?!” and hugged me. We’re still friends.
I have been doing a lot of ~*work on myself*~ lately, and I am constantly telling myself, via Charlie, to ‘dance it like you feel it.’ That Charlie, so motivational! And what a set of buns!
Also: “DANCE THE SHIT OUT OF IT!!!”
I found a youtube of the “Anything but ballet” class where she realizes Cooper is like *super* hot and innovative and Not Like Those Other Guys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9faY6FOYKs
This. This was everything I wanted to be and do at age 18. Sigh!
Speaking of “DANCE THE SHIT OUT OF IT” doesn’t that woman also say something to Cooper like “Really go for it, because when you hold back you really suck.” ? Everyone telling Cooper he sucks! Because he kind of does!
Yes! “You really suck when you play it safe” I think. I wonder if there is Cooper Nielson fanfic. I want to know all about his backstory and his daddy issues, and his broken broken heart and European escapades after Kathleen Donovan so cavalierly tossed him aside in favor of Jonathan. I hope he went to Prague and found some small part of himself there.
Write it! I will sponsor this post for the 2015 Center Stage Celebration.
Ahhh, my first patron! I am delighted!
I will help sponsor this post. But as I told Samantha yesterday, my sister has met Ethan Stiefel, and he is the anti-Cooper, super sweet.
Here’s a taste to whet your whistles, Toasties!
Cooper Nielsen looked up from his lukewarm pilsner, which he had been staring at blankly for the past three-quarters of an hour. He took a tentative sip, then grimaced at the now-flat suds. They’d become distinctly skunky-tasting as he had sat daydreaming. There was a metaphor there, Cooper was sure of it, only he was too drunk to put the pieces together.
How had he ended up here, in this dingy little Prague bar, just across from the Torture Museum. Of course. Every day of his life was torture now, wasn’t it? Ever since…
…ever since –
Kathleen.
Shit.
He lit a cigarette.
“I’ll get implants!”
…I really need this wall-to-wall Center Stage coverage to be a reality. Nobody talks about this movie enough. IT CAN NEVER BE DISCUSSED ENOUGH.
Turns out there was a Center Stage sequel; maybe that could account for an article?
(Canonically, Cooper’s company crashed and burned, and he returned to the Academy for another round of infighting with Peter Gallagher. Jodi Sawyer’s fate remains undisclosed.)
I watched that sequel when it premiered and it is very disappointing. Much more Save the Last Dance than Center Stage. And not a single Mandy Moore song!
Oh my gosh, the sequel totally blew chunks. The girl was Rachel Barry-level mediocre at dancing, nobody could act, and (worst of all) Cooper Nielsen only showed up for a few minutes in the middle.
Worst. Of. All.
Center Stage update from the ballet world: Sascha Radetsky (Charlie) is giving his final performance with American Ballet Theatre TODAY. Which means he’s retiring from performing, because everyone’s all grown up now. Then he’s appearing in a STARZ ballet show called Flesh and Bone, which is coming out next year. With choreography by Ethan Stiefel (Cooper).
Here is a charming article by Radetsky himself, reflecting on his last days at ABT. Very excited that Charlie and Cooper will be back together on STARZ next year.
OH NO, crush renewed. Sigh. Some die hard.
The Dutch National Ballet, where I danced for a year, employed a Croatian ballet mistress and mom who, when still a principal dancer with the company, crashed her car into an Amsterdam canal. Rising from the depths with Navy Seal aplomb, she declared, “I am Juliet!” and rushed off to the theater. She was onstage within the hour, kissing Romeo at the Capulet ball.
I’M CRYING
I’m just gonna leave this here: http://io9.com/bryan-fuller-is-developing-the-ame…
jk OH GLOB YOU GUYS this is so exciting!
(ノ´▽`)ノ♪ You get the beeeest of both worlds!
Fuller’s already said on Twitter that he’ll find a way to cast Tim Minchin. I’d lobby furiously for Callum Keith Rennie as Low-Key, but for the rest of the cast I merely await the play of events with an interested mind.
Tim Minchin as…who? I am WITH YOU on Rennie as Low-Key.
I vote Mad Sweeney.
OF COURSE.
I always pictured Mad Sweeney as bigger but now that you mention it this is PERFECT.
Wasn’t Mad Sweeney like, six foot six canonically?
Minchin’s 6’1, let’s put him in 5″ platform boots and send him out.
My claim to fame is that I went to see Tim Minchin in a play when I was at uni and was very impressed with his piano playing. He was good friends with my housemate at the time. It’s kind of cool to see him doing so well these days.
I mean, if we have the technology to turn Richard Armitage into a dwarf, surely Tim Minchin can be made to look slightly taller.
DREAM CASTING THREAD STARTS HERE AND NEVER ENDS.
Wednesday has and always will be Malcolm McDowell for me, forever and ever amen.
Q’orianka Kilcher for Sam Black Crow.
They’re gonna have such a hard time casting the vagina-of-death lady.
Can someone find me an Egyptian version of Doug Jones for Mr. Ibis?
Q’orianka would be phenomenal.
Barkhad Abdi for Mr. Ibis! He’s too young to play Anansi, although I could also see him as Spider.
I have strong feelings about Brendan Gleeson as Wednesday, and I need an Egyptiannier Ben Kingsley to play Mr Ibis. Also, I saw someone suggest Idris Elba for Mr Jackal, and I would be DOWN with that.
I have sadly reached the point where I’m just praying they don’t whitewash Shadow. I am focusing all my mental powers on that.
I am not prepared.
edit: if you google image search “Shadow American Gods casting” the first three people to come up are Joe Manganiello, Henry Cavill??, and Dwayne The Rock Johnson, who is a DELIGHTFUL choice. Much too smiley, but DELIGHTFUL.
I am also VERY EXCITED about this.
Ok ok but with the number of times this has been said, how much do we trust that it’s ACTUALLY happening this time around?
We must live in hope and trust in Bryan Fuller.
Mindtwins!
100%. I trust in Fuller.
yessssss the fandom is becoming one mind.
I sincerely hope they get to film at the actual House on the Rock because it is TRIPPY AS HELL.
NOICE!
On the one hand, I know exactly how those bi-with-a-boyfriend ladies feel, being a pan mostly-lady. On the other hand, how else are we supposed to describe Lady Gaga after that Instagram debacle?
“instagram debacle”
Everything is a debacle when your parents are reporters.
That HIV prevention piece has left me horror-struck, and deeply grateful that I live in a country with the NHS. What is this nonsense about having to pay upfront for things?
omg, I read that BYU piece yesterday and sat at my desk and cried. As an ex-LDS feminist woman who thought she had left the church peacefully in my wake, I have been completely caught off guard by HOW ANGRY I am in the events of the last few weeks and other shit dredged up by the excommunication of Kate Kelly and other things like this I have read. SO MUCH RAGE. I used to think, live and let live! But now I want to see that church and all its rape-apologists burn to the ground.
I second that HBOGo article’s recommendation of “This Is 40.” I know it’s probably not everyone’s cup of tea, but for me that movie is like a big cozy chair and a nice comfy blanket. I just settle myself in and let the warmth envelop me. It’s bizarre because the movie addresses a lot of very close-to-home things for me (e.g. fraught relationships between parents and adult children, money struggles, honesty in a longterm monogamous relationship) but it overall just makes me so happy.
And as always Melissa McCarthy steals every scene she’s in.
“I prefer queer to bi because I am attracted to people who are more than either just male or female — I reject that binary. I recently got introduced as a party as someone who is ‘intellectually queer’ and I was hella pissed. To quote Harvey Milk, ‘Fuck that, motherfucker, I’m GAY.’ As a femme I have very little visibility, and that’s OK, I know who the eff I am. I have compassion for people who are confused; I know it is complicated. But I can’t help but be pissed off when I’m not given the chance to be seen as my whole self, complications and all.”
IT’S ME IT’S LITERALLY ME BUT I DID NOT ACTUALLY TYPE THIS
like, it’s sad that part of my motivation for my new haircut was wanting to be more “visibly queer”, but here we fucking are. (and let’s talk about being bi/queer without actually actively dating. schroedinger’s sexuality! it doesn’t count! uuuuuuuuuurgh)
Look. Everyone’s straight unless they are actively having sex with a person of the same gender. That’s how it works, right???
What if you’re actively having sex with a person of the same gender… while traveling through time??
…Captain Jack??
All bets are off when time travelling
Sometimes I get angry about my singleness and look at different haircuts Tegan and Sara and Robyn have had but my stylist always convinces me that won’t solve my problems. He did give me bangs though, which made my ex say to a mutual friend “Highjump just gets hotter and hotter” so that was gratifying.
I don’t even like most rainbow gear but I find myself buying/wearing some tacky (to me) rainbow stuff to up my visibility quotient. The struggle is real.
I want to look like Tegan so bad, and it would totally solve ALL OF MY PROBLEMS
ALL OF THEM
Half my wardrobe in high school was black combat boots and button-downs, and I have vivid memories of the plaid shirt I wore every time I needed to project “hello PA/IN this is your local queer person speaking.”
I identified with so many of the quotes at that link. I just wish they had been contextualized/explained a bit (where did they come from? Who interviewed these thoughtful bi ladies?).
And I totally chopped off my hair last month to look a bit more queer. I don’t know if anyone else is picking up on it, but it makes me *feel* a bit more queer, which is about 90% of the battle.
I also went and got a “queerer” haircut a few months ago. Like you, I don’t know if anyone else has noticed, but I do feel the difference, and that helps. (I feel like I look more like myself. Also, more inclined to pick a fight with the occasional person who questions my queerness! I don’t know if that’s the haircut or if I’m just getting crankier.)
What does it mean to be “intellectually queer”? I’m honestly asking because my brain is rebelling against that phrase (“how dare you say she isn’t queer with all of her self?”) but I might be missing something here.
I have NO IDEA but I’m guessing what it really means is “thinks she’s queer but has only dated dudes and Doesn’t Count.”
I don’t know what that person intended, but I’ve thought about applying that label to myself. I’m a woman who is mostly attracted to men (three years ago I would have said only attracted to men), but I am also fairly convinced that both my sexuality and gender identity have far more to do with societal upbringing than genetics. And once I had that realization of, “Shit, all these things about myself that I thought were just me are actually just a load of crap accumulated from years of media exposure and cultural training,” I decided to explore whether and how I’m attracted to other genders, as well as how malleable my own gender identity can be. For example, I shaved my head off on a whim, and was surprised to see how I soon thereafter started feeling uncomfortable wearing some of my more femme clothing. I also noticed that some queer people would flirt with me, and it was hot, and maybe I could be into things that I didn’t think I was into before. Anyway, because so much of this originated from a place of intellectual and political curiosity rather than a moment of “Wow, I’m super attracted to this person, I must not be straight,” I feel super uncomfortable talking about this or identifying as queer, especially when my low-stakes exploration of sexuality as a choice could easily be seen as dismissing or challenging others’ very real, and often very painful, experiences of their sexuality as innate.
I’m in a long-term relationship with a maaaaaan, that means I can’t like laaaaaaaaaadies or anyone elllllllse outside the gender biiiinaaaaryyyyyyyyy
*sad trombone*
I put a purple streak in my hair last month for this exact reason. (Also mid-thirties existential crisis but wevs)
That Roxane Gay story is wonderful, but I would expect nothing else from her.
Just finished it and am now longing to go home and get back into my copy of “An Untamed State.” She’s so talented, I can’t even.
How is she able to reach directly into your heart and squeeze?
I’d like to talk about how apparently Jupiter is Earth’s gas giant bodyguard. This article says that scientists believe Jupiter gets hit by many asteroids that might otherwise hit Earth.
Jupiter has always been my favourite planet.
This is one of those weird coincidences, because I was just reading about Jupiter literally an hour ago! Sounds like it’s a bit like Dumbledore, in that it’s protective but also gets us involved in a lot of rubbish we’d probably rather avoid! http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/08/0…
But that rubbish is good for us! It builds character. And strength/moral fibre etc.
And I guess it will prepare The Earth to fight Voldemort
Someone needs to draw like, helicopter parent Jupiter guarding wee little Earth. LUBCHANKSY!!!!
So true. (Also, your comment made me realise that the nine traditional planets map pretty perfectly to the Stark household in GOT. Theon can be Uranus.
It’s been done! On the tumblrs! (Of course.) Well, actually, I think it was a senpai thing… Having trouble finding the original post right now, but here’s an entire blog devoted to the ship because… naturally http://allofjupitearth.tumblr.com/
oh my god here’s a second one http://fuckyeahjupiterearth.tumblr.com/
Hey, did y’all know you can see four of Jupiter’s moons with ordinary binoculars? You totally can and it’s great. It looks like this:
And my favorite piece of music. Anyone else familiar with Holst’s The Planets? Nothing in this world sounds more joyful to me than the Jupiter movement.
oh I love Jupiter! Always makes me so happy when I listen to it
My MIL once cautioned my husband that he should not marry me: being bisexual, I have “twice the mating opportunities” (her exact words!) and am consequently very likely to cheat on him.
Bisexuals! We go into heat at the drop of a hat, and everyone else in the world is a potential victim of our abominable lusts.
(We don’t talk to her anymore.)
mating opportunities
mating opportunities
MATING OPPORTUNITIES?!
That’s quite a thing to say to someone who’s mating with your son.
I already have a game plan for that Center Stage piece. Now I just have to have my mother send my DVD from Boston so I can take notes from the director’s commentary. I am serious about Center Stage, you guys.
as one should be
We are so excited to enjoy the outputs of your seriousness.
Isn’t it on Netflix? And Amazon Prime? And large portions are on YouTube.
[I just need access to this movie at all times, okay?]
Yeah but not with the director’s commentary. Need my DVD for that.
Their is commentary available?! I did not know how empty my life has been until now. To Amazon!
I watched that commentary track probably countless times when I was a tween. I can still hear him referring to Ethan Stiefel as “an easy and natural actor” in my head, in his voice. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR PIECE IS WHAT I AM SAYING. (Also: damn, where is my DVD.)
Sascha Radetsky is on Twitter and seems super nice. He’s also a good writer. Just mentioning it because what kind of person would I be to not point out that you have an excuse to talk to Sascha Radetsky?
Bisexual lady story! When I was in high school I hung out in a group of D&D gamers who were also theatre kids- so drama and sexual jealousy all around. I had a friends-with-benefits relationship going on with one girl in the gamer circle, and since we mostly saw each other at D&D meetups, that’s when we ended up cuddling. Then I noticed that the guys in the circle (so, everyone but me and her) were . . . staring at us. A lot. Occasionally egging us on to make out. I decided I did not like this and said so, and was summarily informed (by e-mail!) that I should probably just not come back to the circle again.
Lessons learned: straight men are terrible.
It’s just that their widdle feelies get hurt so easily. When you call them out they just can’t handle it so they lash out rather than deal with their own culpability. So sad. You should have apologized & made out EVEN MORE at D&D. I mean, if you weren’t a monster.
Roll a d10, get one girl-on-girl makeout!
(Bleeergh.)
Straight men: still terrible
Reminds me of this: http://the-toast.net/2014/04/21/rules-gender-vari…
“Heterosexual cisgender men are the daintiest treasure of all in Gender-Variant Chivalry. They must be delicately swaddled in linens and samite and carefully carried from castle to castle.”
Coming in way late to scream HAPPY ANNIVERSARY in the manner of LEEEEROY JENKINS and then run out. So, happy anniversary Toast!
Real talk folks, is there a formal way for us to contact craft brands who supply Hobby Lobby and ask that they remove their products from the store? Something like a write-your-senator campaign, maybe?
I’d love nothing more than to see major brands stand up and say that they won’t support the store with their business.
I was just thinking this! Maybe we should start with companies that are high on the HRC Corporate Index, like 3M and Clorox (I’m looking at the HRC “Best Employers” Index right now), or brands that try to promote themselves as feminist (Does HL sell Stitch ‘n Bitch yarn? Do they carry Make Magazine, or did they just stock Craft back in the day?)
That’s a good point about Stitch N Bitch yarn! I feel like Debbie Stoller would not be at all ok with Hobby Lobby’s ethos (although the control she has over her branded yarn is probably negligible – I think she sold the name to Red Heart who now manufactures and markets it.)
Am I the last person to know about Jaya’s food history posts?!? http://firstwefeast.com/author/jayas/#page/2 So great.
Oh, that bi lady article really spoke to me . The worse part about being known to be married to a man is when people assume I’m straight and that I’m a “safe” audience for casual homophobia.
Response: “you know I’m bi right?” *awkward silence*
With a southern (US) accent, and being white, I get the same assumption from racists. I do enjoy the resulting squirm when I respond with “I have cousins of color and a Chinese mother.”
Welcoming better versions of that response. Anyone?
I am kind of horrified by that bisexuality article, mainly because I did not know these kinds of thoughts existed within queer communities. I feel so very fortunate to know my personal band of non-conforming feminists, who no doubt would never say such things.
OR WOULD THEY. I’m male-bodied, and it was only after marrying a gender-non-conforming woman that I started to discover that I was pansexual and genderqueer. I wonder if I’ll have to go through some of these moments in the future… 🙁
The worst moment of being bi was the night one straight-identified friend and one lesbian-identified friend joined in with “but what I really don’t get is bisexuals” and then sort of insinuated that maybe I just really liked men and really just couldn’t take my word for it. How can people who are otherwise great just suck so much when this comes up?
The best moment was when my mother (who is great but definitely struggled with my coming out) eventually said to me “you’re just love with some skin wrapped around it.” Yes. That is the appropriate thing to say.
That quote from your mother is darling as all hell.
Guys. GUYS. A bunch of clergypeople are handing out condoms outside the Hobby Lobby because “Jesus had a lot of issue with powerful people using power over the powerless.”<a/> THIS IS AMAZING.
