I quite like ‘The Faulty Catherine Wheel’. APPLY your flame. THRILL as NOTHING AT ALL happens! MARVEL at the stationary disc nailed to your fence!

This sums up my childhood frustrations of living in California and always having a drought and never getting any good fireworks because of fire. We could always have snakes, but snakes are so boring.

In San Jose, we didn’t even get snakes.

I want my next Bonfire Night to consist of nothing but these, especially The Darkler, which has the bonus of not making you think of every dire ‘You MUST wear gloves while handling these’ warning you’ve ever heard and desperately wondering how long you can hold the toxic hell-brand without looking cowardly before you can drop it in the blessed safety of the water bucket.

Oh, that reminds me of one of the first ‘books’ I wrote, back in 5th grade, about a group of sisters who got into the sparkler stash unsupervised & there was a mishap & the narrator lost the tip of her pinky finger but was also responsible for blinding her baby sister.
I should totally revamp that now. It was soooo tragicomic!

Please type it up/scan it in and submit it to Nicole and Mallory! Little siblings and parents always fared badly in my primary school-age stories – in one of them, set aboard the Queen of Sheba’s boat (we were looking at the Lorrain painting in class), the mother died in childbirth within the first few sentences then the protagonist loses her newborn baby sister, only to have her turn up 2 weeks later having been roaming about the ship the whole time. It was pretty obvious I was an only child with no experience of babies.

Are there any other Toasties at Convergence in Minneapolis this weekend? The fireworks display we stood around outside the Sofitel to watch last night was quite good.

You wrote this just for me, clearly, since that’s pretty much the outfit (stripe shirt, jean shorts) I’m wearing today.
Off to find a tube of toothpaste….

I would buy all of these, and I will happily get under your beds and hang out with your pets during thunderstorms, fireworks or overzealous vacuuming. Not big on loud noises. Bring on the Mumblin Granma!
