Toasties! On Tuesday of this week the brilliant and beautiful Jaya Saxena joined us in an official staff writerly capacity! Read Jaya’s first post as a staff writer, check out everything else she’s done for us, envy her jumpsuit game, be her friend if you’re not already!

Do read Teresa Mathew on photojournalism and its potential for exploitation, particularly of marginalized communities.

TRUTH

My final post for our National Adoption Month series was about openness in adoption and the messages adopted kids often receive about where we “belong.” (It was also a little bit about the Sesame Street movie Follow That Bird. Sorry.)

Here is an Advent calendar, should you happen to be looking for some nice seasonally apropos meditations that definitely won’t give you waking nightmares.

“I don’t want to read another metaphor or allegory about that which is so rarely just spoken of plainly, unremarkably, first of all with truth“: K. Tait Jarboe on abortion, allegory, and the limits of empathy.

I LOVE Jane the Virgin (I am at the end of season one! Let’s talk about this show ~*~forever~*~!) and Jane and Petra and Petra and Jane and I am 1000% here for this.

And finally: Murphles.

A day or two ago on this very site I actually had to delete this trolling comment: “wait, isn’t one of the Schuyler sisters white?” Friends, we do not question Phillipa Soo’s Asianness at The Toast! I’ve put up with oh, so many slights as a lifelong fan of both musical theatre and opera and you will kindly let me have this ONE. LITTLE. THING.*

* hey hey hey hey guess who’s seeing Hamilton tomorrow!!!!! Oh, you guys. The world will never be the same.
