I literally thought this exact same thing, and made this exact same joke two days ago. Star Trek never fails me.

Though it may be illogical to both tag and categorize this as “beauty,” I find I am unable to raise an objection.

    1. fireblargg +14

The first tag is always the same as the category at the top of the page, no? But regardless, this post certainly has enough beauty to be counted twice.

On one of these instances, Kirk tries to explain it away by saying, “My friend is… Chinese. He injured his ears in a rice picking accident.” It’s just SO TERRIBLE and SO IMPLAUSIBLE that it has been engraved into my brain.

Just… what? Who wrote that!? WHYYYYYY

    1. szielins +56

Harlan Ellison wrote that. Which means he’s also the ultimate source of McCoy running around in a drug frenzy, shouting “Murderers! Assassins!”

Kirk and Spocks’ attempt to explain themselves to a 20th Century policeman:

KIRK: My friend is obviously Chinese. I see you’ve noticed the ears. They’re actually easy to explain.

SPOCK: Perhaps the unfortunate accident I had as a child.

KIRK: The unfortunate accident he had as a child. He caught his head in a mechanical rice picker. But fortunately, there was an American missionary living close by who was actually a skilled plastic surgeon in civilian life.

Perhaps the unfortunate accident I had as a child, perhaps a different event from my past which is totally unrelated to the unfortunate accident.

Many writers were involved in crafting the final teleplay. The line may or may not have been Ellison’s. I’m a bit confused about Dorothy Fontana’s role. I’m positive I read in a reliable source that the final draft was hers, but then I find her in a taped interview saying she wasn’t involved in the episode. So WTF. The line is Fontana-esque though.

        1. me1 +7

OK, so I looked it up. Memory Alpha reports these details, but I used the Justman/Solow book that is the source. The penultimate draft was Dorothy’s, the final teleplay Roddenberry’s. But that line is pure Dorothy. She was the best writer of character-driven comedy on the series. The sexy computer in “Tomorrow is Yesterday” was her invention, as were the tipsy and jealous Kelvans in “By Any Other Name”, and the teddy-bear with fangs (“Journey to Babel”*). If it’s a favorite Trek moment, the chance is decent that she penned it.

          * also in Journey to Babel the line, “I seem to have miscalculated”. A forever favorite.

The City on the Edge of Forever. One of the best episodes of TOS, and arguably one of the best in all of Trek.

See, you tag this “things nicole does for no reason,” but I’m pretty sure that there is a reason, and the reason is to bring us joy.

Love it! One can only hope that the next piece will be a list of explanations for the eyebrows.

This post is a delight. Just a complete delight. My post-long weekend Tuesday is exponentially better now.

It greatly disappointed me, as a wee young child, that he never discovered earmuffs or sweatbands.

  7. bighairnoheart +78

I finally figured it out. This is what the reboot lacks. Needs 100% more Zachary Quinto in beanies. All their problems will be solved.

    1. builtahouse +26

I need the blooper of reel of Pine not being able to keep it together in the face of Ridiculous Spock.

  8. zwol +26

Is #2 from the movie where they go back in time to get whales? I imprinted pretty hard on that movie as a small child, and one of the scenes permanently engraved in my memory is the bit where Spock tears a strip off his toga thing and makes it into a headband in order not to freak the mundanes interfere with history by being obviously an alien on pre-contact Earth.

    1. Unreadaethel +23

But the thing is, they’re in San Francisco. Ear pointing might be viewed as an extreme body-mod in the 80s, but it really wouldn’t be all that hard to explain away the ears.

    2. houblonchouffe +47

      Yep, IV: The Voyage Home.

(Sidebar: MrChouffe and I are going to San Francisco in November and we have a location/shot list and plan to go to every. single. one. we can find, including where Chekov tries to find the nuclear wessels.)

        1. houblonchouffe +57

True story: when MrChouffe and I had been dating… maybe two months, probably less, we were staying the night on his boat and I asked if we could watch Star Trek IV. He basically fell to his knees crying, “I have been waiting twenty years for a woman to say that to me.”

          1. builtahouse +8

            *makes incoherent noises*

well, this gives me hope that good dudes DO exist who will appreciate this highly specific fan knowledge. 😀

          2. houblonchouffe +5

Despite the fact that I just spent ten minutes tapping out a highly, highly arcane set of TNG trivia on a crossword blog, MrChouffe is a far more devoted Star Trek fan than I am. I gotta say it’s pretty great.

          3. Lady_Honoria +7

I do not have this relationship but I DO have the relationship where I watch TOS and then explain the episode in excruciating detail to my poor partner, who nods along and sometimes even points out some science. Bless him.

    1. damanoid +31

I feel like he might have had some mixed feelings about #6.

“Okay, Leonard, for this next episode you won’t need full makeup, so you can sleep in.”

      “WOO HOO!”

“However, we will need you to stop by Costuming so they can measure you for a Nazi uniform.”

      1. Lady_Honoria +7

Seriously that episode gave me so many FEELS. Mostly uncomfortable ones. And I saw it just after I’d watched the video about how he came up with the vulcan salute.

  9. Household_Opera +30

“Like a lil acorn” and the accompanying image are going to make me giggle quietly to myself for the rest of the afternoon.

Came for the ears, stayed for the heart-stopping beauty of Kirk’s guns in that grey t-shirt (obviously, Spock, too. So pretty!)

    1. bighairnoheart +20

For real. I had to keep pausing my series rewatch just because it kept hitting me that they were all such babes. (I guess elementary school me never picked up on that the first time around.)

    2. Lady_Honoria +17

I started watching TOS with my cousin who was only familiar with Old Shatner and partway through the second episode she turned to me and said ‘I was not prepared for him to be so attractive’

  11. builtahouse +11

Just savored my way through this article, and Ace of Base “Beautiful Life” was already playing in my headphones, and all I can say is A++ life experience.

Ways In Which Kirk Has Attempted To Disguise His Ears

    1. …Okay, just the one.

“My god, this makeup is an ordeal! How does Leonard do it every day? Maybe I’m not giving him enough credit as an actor. On the other hand, maybe I’ll just suppress my insecurity by stealing his bike again.”

  13. frankie0darling +15

hipster!Spock in a beanie, cropped tee, fairtrade belt malarkey and ironic teeny man-purse is the hero this world needs right now.

  14. halloweenjack64 +3

The first photo (from “A Piece of the Action”) is a nice reminder that TOS had some genuinely funny episodes. TNG didn’t really seem to do that, except for a couple of holodeck episodes, which were funny mostly because of Worf taking them very seriously, and DS9’s humor episodes mostly served to remind us that the Ferengi were originally intended to portray everything that Gene Roddenberry didn’t like about people because Roddenberry insisted that humanity would be perfect by the 24th century. I don’t think that Voyager or Enterprise had any really funny episodes, although they did have funny moments, as did the other series.

    1. Mary +6

I disagree. Yesterday they showed the one where Q gets thrown out of the Continuum and I genuinely laughed out loud multiple times.

        1. Mary +4

Exactly that one! Also Riker’s “I am pretending I am not into this” face when Q conjures two sultry ladies to sultry at him,

  15. wikipedia

Incidentally, Wikipedia has some words about this:

""The Return of the Archons" introduces for the first time the Federation's Prime Directive.[12][18] However, an important modification is made to the absolutist non-interference rule almost immediately. Kirk argues that the Prime Directive does not bar interference with other cultures, but rather bars interference only with a "living and growing" culture (Kirk's words in the episode).[19][20] Scholar Eric Greene argues this is reflective of the "frontier myth" of Star Trek and American foreign policy in the late 20th century, in which a superior culture expands to impose its understanding of freedom and progress on others.[19] M. Keith Booker, interpreting the politics of Star Trek, agrees, noting that in leaving behind a sociological team to "help restore the planet's culture to a more human form" (Kirk's words) means restoring it to one that "suits the values of the Federation and twenty-third century Earth."[20] Indeed, the Prime Directive would only truly be honored during the series in the episode "Bread and Circuses".[21][22]"

  16. Brook M

oh my goodness at the end, where Kirk has destroyed their entire societal structure, and is just super-smug? Like, "Well, Marplon, you're on your own now. I hope you're up to it. And you can get rid of those robes. If I were you, I'd start look for another job."?! I literally gaped at my screen with horror and delight.

  17. CarterS +1

This makes me happy in my soul. “The Voyage Home” look always makes me think of “Karate Kid,” same basic look. Crossover maybe?

Also Nazi Spock scares me. Just saying.
