This was great! My two perfumes:

YSL Baby Doll in the gem-shaped bottles: smells like flowers made out of candy.

Chanel No. 5 smells like duty free sophistication and dusty vintage clothes

I USED to wear vanilla scented oil from the Body Shop, and I highly recommend it because everyone wants to eat you.

I had a friend who wore marshmallow scent to parties (maybe all the time, IDK). She had gigantic, pillowy breasts and wore low-cut shirts, and people were constantly burying their face in them and inhaling deeply, sometimes making NOMNOM sounds. 🙂

everyone who lives in DC currently thinks that the best thing to do is soak oneself in the amber-scented Bath and Body Works products and then stand very close to you on metro. EVERYONE.

The “SOAKING IN IT” thing, to me, is THE FASTEST WAY to totally ruin perfume. Like, if other people can smell it from ten feet away, or, as you say, if it’s horribly cloying on public transit? YUCK.

    ANNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is 100% legit, and I tend to go between “smells like a cupcake” and “smells like a sexy hippie.” Very rarely, “smells like rich people soap.”

I’m on a bit of a smells-like-dirt kick, and I will not apologize. The best part is that even if they smell it, most people don’t think it’s perfume.

I have a smells-like-dirt perfume (well, sample) that I absolutely adore, but the label fell off and I have no idea what it is or where it’s from. I think it was called Wet March, maybe? It smells like dirt and leaves and spring and is wonderful. I came across a Wet Garden fragrance from Demeter at the drugstore, but it’s not quite the same. 🙁

      1. MilesofMountain +6

Black March?! That’s by CB I Hate Perfume and he does the best dirt ever. Today I am wearing his Wild March (dirt with mushrooms and vegetation) and yesterday was his I Am A Dandelion (dirt and lawn and dandelions and flowers).

        1. steampunk sparrow +2

That sounds right! I love you.

I’m not much of a perfume person, but that one is just perfection on me. Do you know if he has a dirt-y scent for autumn?

          1. MilesofMountain +1

Wild Hunt would be autumn-appropriate, I think, but he also has November. I haven’t worn it in a while, but I remember some dirt and leaves under the pumpkin pie/apple smell.

They really smell like those things? My friend and I lament aaaaall the time about how perfumes sound like they’re everything we’ve ever wanted in a smell, and when you put them on they just smell…perfumey.

          1. MilesofMountain +2

I agree entirely, there’s not a lot of realism in perfumery. CB I Hate Perfume is probably one of the most realistic of the complex perfumes (Demeter is the most realistic, but it’s usually just one note or a few at most). Eternal Return is the only perfume I’ve smelled that ACTUALLY smells like the ocean (or a cleaned up version of the ocean with less dead seaweed). And his dirt is a pronounced wet, dark, dirty dirt. If you’re looking for realism I’d say it’s worth it to try his samples.

      2. Shesaheathenchild +1

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab does a couple earth scents that are worth checking out if CB I Hate Perfume isn’t quite in ones budget.

I had no idea this was a thing since the only perfume I own was gifted by someone. Smell-like-dirt perfume sounds perfect. Thank you!

Fave dirt scent is BPAL’s Jazz Funeral: “Bittersweet bay rum, bourbon, and a host of funeral flowers with a touch of graveyard dirt, magnolia and Spanish Moss.” The bay rum and bourbon GTFO on me, and it’s just dirt and moss. WOOOO.

  5. wallsdonotfall +4

Oh damn, BPAL. I haven’t bought any in years but suddenly I want to try on some Lady MacBeth just to see if maybe, somehow, it has stopped turning into days-old Yellowtail after three hours.

    1. Annaham +1

The last BPAL heartbreak I experienced was with Siren–ginger for ten minutes, and then plastic for nine hours.

      1. GGD

If you get a chance to get to a will call or even get imps of scents you want to try, it’s a good way to test without heartbreak. Or you can hit up the BPAL forums and swap.

I traded with a friend when I had a few scents that I loved on first test and then sort of decided I wasn’t in love with.

Turns out she wasn’t a leather girl and I wasn’t a slower girl. Works out both ways 😉

I can’t wear anything that has even a drop of pachouli in it because my body chemistry apparently really wants me to smell like a dirty hippie, but the worst reaction I ever had to a perfume was when I put on a sample of something that was supposed to have a ” top note of vanilla quickly translates to a honeysuckle when it touches skin.” I have no idea if it did that, because the moment it hit my skin, I got nauseous. I call it “the pukey perfume” and it is on my forever blacklist.

Narciso Rodriguez For Her. It’s the only perfume that people have ever noticed and commented positively on, and it smells like warm, clean musk and wind through distant flowers and I love it. I have both the enormous EDT bottle and the hair mist.

Close second is Love, Chloe. Nobody ever comments on it positively or negatively, but I do enjoy it.

  8. mkpatter +5

Most perfumes make me pukey, so if I’m gonna wear it, it has to be behind my knees and nowhere near my face. Also I mostly wear dude perfume, because most lady scents make me want to puke.

    1. Bittersweet +2

Agreed. Most perfumes make me pukey AND headachy, though, dude perfumes included, so I only ever wear herbal lemon/verbena stuff from Occitane. The smells-like-dirt perfumes above have me intrigued.

Slutty alien wearing old leather boots is more than a personal scent for me, it’s a total lifestyle.

I read a lot of romance, therefore I am aware that the best things to smell like are: cinnamon-dusted cookies, a field of wildflowers, or Eau de Woman.

You can combine two, but not all three, of these, if you are complex.

    1. lizardjellybean +5

Haha, yep. I narrate audiobooks sometimes, and they’re usually romance novels. Women smell like flowers and baked goods and WOMEN, and men smell like leather and sweat and MAN. And sometimes they smell like their muscles. So…meat? They smell like meat?

    Fantasy perfumes:
Trophy wife in soft neutrals tropical flowers
Fantasy boyfriend plaid flannel woodsmoke, whiskey and coffee
Seduction guaranteed vanilla, burnt chocolate, cinnamon warm milk
First summer date clean sundried ironed linen,
    lavender and lilies

Normally perfume and cologne make me sneeze, and while I’m pregnant they make me ill, so I’m very glad my husband wears “clean husband wearing deodorant” and I basically do the same.

Except I do love everything that smells like honeysuckle. Also eucalyptus/spearmint from Bath and Body Works.

  13. Angelan_ +2

Hypnotic Poison forever! It was marketed all ‘sexy sexy danger red eyeshadow alert’ but it is the absolute opposite and falls into the snuggly cupcake genre of perfumes.

    ANNA!!

I’m kind of a fan of vanilla-scented stuff, but I *cough* adoooore J’adore by Dior. I don’t know WHAT it is.

Okay, according to Sephora’s website, it is: “Discover J’adore, the iconic fragrance that embodies the ultimate expression of femininity and luxury. Like a veil of sensuality, J’adore is a magnificent floral bouquet of exquisite flowers; Comoro Islands ylang-ylang, Damascus rose, and sambac jasmine.”

I don’t think I’ve ever smelled floral-y in it though. It smells like light musk on me. Go FIGURE. At least I am FEMININE? God, that description makes me feel like I’m wearing Tom Haverford’s perfume.
