2. Stanley Tucci’s teeth.
3. How you see even more of Stanley Tucci’s perfect teeth when he bares them and throws his head back to laugh appreciatively.
4. Mechanical death-mandrills are not the problem. Non-human primates are the problem, and they WILL come for us, and the fact I predicted it will give me little pleasure as I’m eaten or placed in an elaborate fortress to live out my days in torment and regret.
5. Never let your cardio slip, guys. Never. You think you’re out, but you need to be ready at any and all times to be thrown in a death arena with a handful of amped-up career Crossfitters who have also killed a bunch of people.
6. Peeta was less annoying in this movie.
7. Gale is pretty hot.
8. Femlash Friday request: Katniss/Jena Malone’s character.
9. I am exactly brave and nice enough to be Effie Trinket, and no more.
10. Like, being Cinna would be way too brave.
11. CINNA (cries forever)
12. Okay, though, there’s a little bit too much white-saviour stuff, right?
13. Then again, the fact the filmmakers mostly stuck to Collins’ obvious efforts to have racially diverse characters resulted in some epic shit-fits from idiots, so you win some you lose some, I guess.
14. But, no, the SEA of black people in District 11 being super-grateful to Katniss for not killing a little girl was a bit much.
15. I don’t understand why everyone didn’t have sex constantly during training or while in transit (both movies.)
16. Because, right, either you’re going to be dead in a week, or you’ll be mega-rich and in a basically consequence-free enivronment.
17. Live a little! “Tubes up in ten minutes.” “Cinna, you want to go for it, or what?”
18. Jeffrey Wright is the best part of everything he touches.
19. I don’t know if I could even be Effie. I think I could be a sponsor who sends Katniss something, and then feels really good about having done so and made sure their friends knew about it.
20. If you’re going to tell me someone had their teeth filed into points so she could rip out her enemies’ throats, I damn well better see that bitch rip out someone’s throat.
21. This movie was great.

Polite request for yes yes this forever yes.
Sarah Karlan always seems to know what I need in my life.
I haven’t read the books, and I liked this movie so much more than the first one. It managed to surprise me a few times. Like, I should have seen coming The Hoff’s sudden-but-inevitable SPOILER, but there I was, surprised nonetheless.
I read this four times before realizing you weren’t talking about David Hasselhoff.
I have stil not realised that, and am still confused.
OH! *That* Hoff.
Did anyone else feel like there was way more sexual tension between Katniss and Cinna than between Katniss and anyone else?
Also, how the fuck did twirling in her wedding dress also change her EARRINGS? Because it did.
I think Cinna just has sexual tension with everyone.
And oh wow, didn’t notice the changing earrings haha. I did see that the twirling gave her straps on a previously strapless dress, which was mind-blowing enough for me. I’m going to say nanotechnology is the reason. Cinna must be hardcore into programming nanorobots, which he also has incredible sexual tension with probably.
That sounds perfectly logical.
I was trying to figure out where the wings were hiding. Capitol fashion magic.
Because Cinna.
He’s just that good.
A wizard did it!
I was actually getting some serious Katniss/Haymitch vibes. The more I think about, the more I believe they are MFEO. Although Jena Malone was absurdly hot in this and a Joniss ship would be absolutely acceptable too.
I am unabashedly in love with the idea of Katniss/Haymitch. These are some broken-ass people. Just let them settle down together to raise geese in a drunken stupor and have rough sex and horrible screaming nightmares and wake up flailing knives about and threatening each other.
Ok, so yes! I did not imagine them getting drunk together right? That was in the book but not the movie? I was disappointed after that scene where she woke him up but also concerned that maybe I had made it up in my head.
My husband said the same thing when we left the theater: “Didn’t Katniss and Haymitch get wasted together in the book…?”
Yes. Yes they did.
You definitely did not imagine that! It did happen in the movie, but shortened by a lot — after the Quarter Quell is announced, Katniss runs out to the snow by herself for a while, and then heads over to Haymitch’s:
Katniss: I’m here to get drunk.
Haymitch: Finally, something I can help you with.
I’ve only read Catching Fire once, and it’s on my broken Kindle, but I believe in the book the scene goes on a little longer — she gets absolutely trashed, and there’s more crying, and they both show a disturbing lack of regard for the value of their own lives in comparison to that of the most hallowed Peeta.
I may be a terrible person for this, I never post fanfic, but it’s literally the best Hunger Games fic I’ve read, period.
Haymitch/Katniss, like it should have been, “To The Victor The Spoils”: http://annakovsky.livejournal.com/238433.html
Oh, god, thank you for that link. That is PRECISLEY what I wanted. Just perfection.
I loved it. I loved how gay Finnick was (whoops!). I loved Effie on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I loved stupid Peeta (so, so stupid) (What vicious monkeys? Katniss, I got you this pearl! etc). But…
The black people district. The black people district where the black people labor in the fields. The black tribute who had her teeth filed into points so she could kill people with them. Good job, everyone [wide smile; slow clap; coughs blood]
The idea that a government would implicitly or explicitly segregate the country and give black people the hardest jobs and the most corrupt police force… that could never happen.
Ha.
Ha.
Ha.
/notfunny
yes, this is the context I had in my head, as well. I believe that district is supposed to be the rural deep south, right?
One of the things I actually like about the HG series is that you have to fill in a lot of the backstory and history of Panem on your own. It’s not hard to imagine the proto-Capitol government pulling all the wealthy white folks out of the deep south and leaving the poor folks and black folks to do the capitol’s bidding. I mean. We are not talking about a very nice government here.
It hurts my heart a little that Jesse Williams was not cast as Finnick, but dude who did play him was totally delightful and sparkly.
Yes! Jesse Williams was my dreeeeeam Finnick. 🙁
Based on my viewing of the two films, and having never read my books, my understanding is that District 11 produces tragic black martyrs, District 1 produces the snobby Jocks from 1980s comedies, and District 3 produces the corresponding Nerds.
This is my favorite article about how stupid Peeta is http://www.vulture.com/2013/11/catching-fire-all-…
Effie Trinket is PERFECTION. I love her. I LOVE HER.
Elizabeth Banks fucking killed it. “You both deserved so much better. I am truly sorry.” :””””'(
The whole reaping with her in the butterfly dress and just being so sad and so heartbroken to have to go through it all again, aughhh. MY HEART.
“As always…ladies first.”
Yeah, I was actually feeling some Effie/Katniss slash. Anyone else?
Yes to #8! I want ALL the Katniss/Johanna.
…actually I just want all the Johanna, period, because I love her and her twitchy fierceness, but Katniss/Johanna is excellent and would probably make a more satisfying romantic resolution than the one we’re going to get.
Anything would be better than than the romantic resolution we get. But especially Katniss/Johanna.
Also can we please discuss how it seems Phillip Seymour Hoffman has just decided to always play Phillip Seymour Hoffman from here on out? Same hairstyle, same kinda open mouth and vaguely Brooklyn-y accent, same long black coat. He didn’t get even a teeny bit Capitol-y, and I don’t remember from the books if Heavensbee was supposed to be less flashy, but he was so much less flashy that I would have even suspected him of something SPOILERY. Even President Snow was more fancy than him.
You know, for me this was the first time I have ever liked Philip Seymour Hoffman in a role. I guess playing himself was great for Heavensbee. I was just a little sad they didn’t even try to make him up like an overindulgent Capital resident, considering everyone around him. Not even a flamboyant hairdo? Really?
I tend to think that’s what makes Plutarch great. He could Wes Bentley it up and look ridiculous and indulge in the decadence of funny beards and funnier vests (vests are inherently funny). Instead, he just looks like a Rich Guy. An enigmatic one. And that’s exactly what I want from that character.
Also, I am late to this party, but yes, great movie, A+ (OK, not quite, but close), would watch again.
Gale is not hot Liam Hemsworth is not hot.
Stanley Tucci’s teeth are the most terrifying thing in this, or any movie.
Johanna Mason is way too much woman for Katniss to handle.
A) F
B) T
C) V, V T
Oh god, Katniss and Johanna all day. The sexual tension – you could cut it with a knife and they probably WILL cut something with a knife or an ax just wait and maybe don’t make too many sudden movements.
My husband, who hasn’t read the books, genuinely thought the elevator strip tease was just for Katniss and that her “love is weird” comment was about her secret love for Katniss, so maybe you guys are on to something.
Gah I have absolutely no interest in seeing any of these movies because I saw that shit when it was called “Battle Royale” and I’m okay with not seeing HG = Battle Royale plus The Fifth Element plus Steven King’s “The Long Walk” but I love every single actor who appears in the series so much help please
OKAY so, my brother = Battle Royale champion and was all, ugh, no, BC, let us not go see baby!Battle Royale but you know, I was paying and bought him soda, and he was all, actually this is …pretty good. Just do it. Don’t tell anyone. It’s okay. The books are pretty awful, but this second one really sold me on the franchise. Everyone you love is pretty awesome.
And you can still love Battle Royale!
Disagree. The Battle Royale movies are fun but they are much more about the arena than the politics. HG does a better job of world building, IMO.
AGREE! The Hunger Games and Battle Royale are not the same movie at all.
Absolutely agree. I hate the constant “It’s just Battle Royale!” crap because, no, it’s not. There’s so much more to Hunger Games in plot, character, worldbuilding, and everything. Look, people, we can have two stories about kids killing each other in an arena. It’s okay.
I’m also sick of the Battle Royale thing. The Hunger Games is about the politics of violence from a tomboy/not femme lady’s point of view. Even if there were no other differences (which there are, there are several important differences) that alone would make The Hunger Games better in my book.
Battle Royale is a very different animal.
There is room in this world for more than one or maybe two dystopian films about people forced to kill each other for sport.
Are you my husband. I managed to force him to go see the first one, which sadly has an arc very close to BR. BUT with the second one we really go deeper. Fight the EVIL, EVIL man.
Suzanne Collins isn’t Shakespeare or anything, but Battle Royale is one of the worst-written books I’ve ever read in my life. (Maybe the movie is amazing and adds things like character development and takes away things like crashing stupidity.)
word. After the first round of “HG is just Battle Royale redux!” I went and checked out BR at my library and that shit was boring as fuck.
I heard that the english translation of Battle Royale is crap. I don’t know…I didn’t like the movie enough to bother reading it.
Actually…I didn’t like the movie at all.
My only feeling about this movie is deep appreciation for all the futuristic knitwear. THOSE COWLS.
YES. Where do I get me some District 12 sweaters?!
I’m so glad that other people noticed this!!!
Actually though somewhere or other is selling clothes based on the costumes from this movie. Can’t remember where I saw that, but you can totally buy that cowl!
Ravelry.com! You can make your own or ask a friendly knitter:
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-katni…
I think I’d be braver if I were more confident that I could pull off my acts of bravery, if that makes sense. You know, rather than just failing and looking silly and then getting in trouble.
I mean I say I want Katniss/Johanna but what I really want is Johanna/me and also to be as great as Katniss. But those two things aren’t really related. Except for both being things I want.
Stanley Tucci in this movie is a technicolor ball of crazy and I love him forever in everything.
Yes yes yes yes.
There are some good tumblr posts going around about Tucci’s character, namely that:
He is actually capable of entertaining you during this apocalyptic nightmare which is insane and also the point, and
He should host the Oscars. In character. The end. (the teeth)
I would absolutely watch those Oscars.
Oh my gosh, that would be so apropos. Where do we line up to vote for this?
TEAM PEETA FOREVER
well really Team Katniss but I really love Peeta too
Uncertain after the first one, but this movie convinced me re Peeta.
Also, interesting article from Linda Holmes (link), arguing that Peeta takes on the traditional Movie Girlfriend role in Hunger Games. Interesting gender role stuff in these films/books!
I love that article with such fire-y passion it’s a little uncomfortable.
Ah, yes – I was going to link that piece but I’m glad someone beat me to it because it is FANTASTIC.
THE MAN BAKES AND IS 1000% DEVOTED TO YOU, FFS WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT, KATNISS?!?!?
I’m just really glad that someone else thought “Why are they not all having sex? All the time? YOU’RE ABOUT TO DIE GO FOR IT.” Although perhaps it would be awkward to sleep with someone and then possibly kill them later?
I’d definitely sleep with the ones who seemed emotional, and then when they hesitated to kill me because of what we shared I’d just laugh at them for being weak and slit their throats*
*Hahaha no I’d die so fast I have no idea how to make a fire.
Maybe if you sex all the other tributes then kill them and win, you could be known as the Praying Mantis or any other cool type of sexual cannibal.
Not to mention it’s super realistic to expect a bunch of young, fit people training together to get busy, even without the imminent death aspect–I hear every Olympic village turns into a huge orgy fest.
Did you guys think that Haymitch’s whole “yeah, we’re all… friends now, us winners” thing with being uncomfortable about this QuarterQuell was because the winners all spend the entire ‘mentor’ period during subsequent games in a giant drunken orgy?
I do. Because: science dictates that must be true, right?
Yes. PG film/YA novel problems?
I wonder this EVERY TIME I read the books. (which is a lot, you guys.) But I think maybe Collins didn’t want to then have to deal with the whole, uh, rape issue in the arena then as well, because … yeah. It is mentioned in the books that the boys in the arena don’t grow beards, like, at all, so my head-canon is sexual-urge-repression-hormones. If your tributes can’t get it up then you don’t have to worry about filming 12-year-olds having either consensual or non-consensual sex for everyone at home to watch. Ugh.
Any Dragon Con-goers super psyched and/or disoriented about the fact that the training place was the Atlanta Mariott Marquis hotel?
I saw that shot of the elevator and got excited. My friend practically had to beat me to shut up because I was all like, “I’ve been in that elevator! I stood in that elevator with John de Lancie! I almost got puked on by an elf in that elevator!”
Wait, seriously?! I thought it reminded me of somewhere!
Yep. I googled it to double check. TripAdvisor & the Wikipedia Page (who knew the hotel had a wiki page?) confirm!
I WAS IN THAT ELEVATOR! But for RWA. And I totally didn’t catch that onscreen. But on the plus side, now I’m having PTSD about that damn elevator, so that’s fun.
YES YES YES
Can I just point out that the fourth-highest US opening gross of all time is now a dystopian action/sci-fi film headed by a teenage girl character? Cuz, you know it is. Too bad no one went to see it, because big movies starring women aren’t profitable, *nod*.
JOHANNA OH GOD HER NAME IS JOHANNA AND SHE IS MY QUEEN. I will sponsor a month of femmeslash Fridays if one of the weeks is me/Johanna.
Lack of sex was my biggest complaint (both book and movie). Like. She and Peeta SHARE A BED for like a month worth of train rides and training, but no boning. And I’ve been waiting for someone to write me Cinna/Finnick for YEARS (looking at you, username thezlot).
I actually don’t believe that there was no Sad Train Sex. It is beyond my comprehension.
In general my theory on YA romances is that the sex happens off-screen because the author doesn’t want to get yelled at for having underage sex.
But there is so much sex.
Wood sex. Train sex. Bread sex.
In Peeta’s first scene, when he brought over those loaves to Haymitch’s house, I started cracking up. Because: Peeta, enough with the goddamned bread. We get it. You can bake. I do not want several loaves of a bread every day.
BREAD SEX BEST SEX
I would read OFC/Johanna to imagine myself in it.
Especially if it was possibly threesome Finnick/Johanna/OFC, where Johanna is domme! and Finnick is a switch and just… I should stop.
Never stop. Never. Stop.
Well or okay, Switch!Finnick/Domme!Johanna/Switch!Katness, where Katniss is all, oh, I’m a willfull sub, but I respect you, beautiful, loving, givesnofucks imperious Johanna and Finnick does a mighty fine service-sub role? Someone please take this bunny off my hands, I got no time to write fanfic 🙁 :(.
Was there truly no sex at all on the train in the book? I think I’ve mentally edited some in because it really just makes no sense at all otherwise.
No sex in the books, although some implied sex eventually towards the end of book 3.
After not really liking Woody Harrelson in the first movie and after watching this one last night, decided it was really just his wig that pissed me off through both. It’s just so terrrrible.
Also, actually reached out to the screen when Jeffrey Wright appeared.
It is not a good wig.
15. I don’t understand why everyone didn’t have sex constantly during training or while in transit (both movies.)
Yes, this is why we have fanfic. (And this is one of those cases where the fic is better than the actual books.)
Except no one is writing Haymitch/Cinna, which is unfortunate.
Why do I find Woody Harrelson so hot in this role WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?
Whatever it is, it’s wrong with me too.
It’s not just you; drunk and emotionally unavailable looks good on him.
I swear he’s had that look many times before, though, and this was the only time my thoughts have wandered that way.
It’s possible it’s taken just this long for me to get over Cheers, I suppose.
He’s not bad as Haymitch, but he achieved Peak Hotness as Tallahassee in Zombieland. He’s pretty drunk-crazy in that, too.
I have high hopes for True Detective.
Do you have fic recs? This thread needs fic recs.
Ooh, yes, I do, but I’m at work so I can’t find them right now. But I will be back to this thread tonight! In general, though, the Archive of Our Own has a lot of really good Hunger Games fic. Most of my recs would be Haymitch-centric stuff, but there’s lots of good fic for Johanna, Finnick, and Cinna as well.
This is my favorite series: The Long Road Home by deathmallow. It’s a Haymitch-centric (eventually Haymitch/Johanna) story that goes through all the books with a lot of really interesting worldbuilding and development of minor characters, and some AU elements. Very well-written, and, as the name implies, VERY long.
I loved this series:
http://archiveofourown.org/series/45714
It’s 5 different backstories for Cinna.
I wouldn’t even manage to be Effie either. I’m either tripping around the Capitol wearing fourteen baby pandas on my head and eyelashes (1%), or more likely I’m shoving squirrels into my starving maw in one of the lesser Districts and then dying horribly (99%). Ain’t that that most of us? That’s life. /bleak
Your assessment of your Hunger Games potential mirrors my own exactly.
Multiple times throughout the movie I came to the realization that I do not have a very robust survival instinct. I would just lie down and die.
Gale is beautiful but boring. Alas.
Boring and kind of bitter. When you’re living in a dystopian nightmare you need a bit of fun in your (no) sex life. Sadly Peeta is also a bit dull, but at least hopeful
.
22. MAAAAAAAAGS.
tick tock
… which was so much more drawn out and suspenseful in the book, by the by.
AGREE was upset that they didn’t you know, take longer to figure that out, but I guess you only have so long.
So I know I was not the only one watching the movie and thinking “please let them release a pattern book, please let them release a pattern book”. It turns out that the actual cowl was woven and not knitted (http://knityorkcity.com/2013/10/24/famous-knits/), but someone came up with a pattern anyway: http://lollyknits.com/2013/11/05/the-katniss-cowl…
OMG as a weaver I am desperate for them to release some info about the weaving sett for the cowl. I COULD DO THAT. I COULD DO IT SO HARD.
Bless you for posting.
YESSSS
Also, related to #5 – is there a Hunger Games workout plan anywhere? Right now, if they chose me as tribute I might just walk into the poison fog to get it over with.
Someone should redo that zombies running app to be a hunger games (or, like, “Arena Challenge” or something for copyright reasons) thing, where you run for sponsorships or away from fire or whatever, and sometimes you “hurt your legs” so you have to do upper body stuff, etc. Plus also it would teach you to knife-fight.
Yes yes yes yes.
We did a short one at the site I co-run!
http://www.paperdroids.com/2013/11/29/catching-fi…
This list could be reduced to ONLY Johanna Mason and I would wholeheartedly endorse it. Jena Malone knocked it out of the fucking park. Her rage sustains me.
I want to reiterate what I saw on tumblr where Johanna literally said, “FUCK YOU SNOW” and nothing happened, but Katniss dressed up as a bird and Snow was yo Heavensbee kill dis bitch painfully
I am not allowed to articulate my feelings about Johanna Mason and her delightful, horrifically bad day while at work, but I assure you, I AM IN MY BUNK FOR THE LADY COVERED IN BLOOD WITH NOT EVEN ONE FUCK LEFT TO GIVE.
I actually shipped Johanna/Katniss a bit in the books, which is unusual for me b/c I’m not terribly much of a shipper.
#8 YES PLEASE
CINNA! (still crying.)
Also, it was foggy this morning, and it made my stomach clench in fear.
Regarding the white savior stuff — the Katniss in the books isn’t meant to be white, so there’s that.
! You rememmmmmmmmbereeeeeed! <3
Katniss isn’t white? I haven’t heard this before. What ethnicity is she?
Katniss is written as being racially ambiguous, and there’s no definitive answer to your question that I know of (in canon, anyway), but there’s a shit-ton of context/subtext/evidence in the books that point to her being mixed-race. Like, her mother is probably either white or mostly-white, but her father is almost certainly /not/ white, unless you’re doing a whiteness-as-default, totally-ignorant-of-racialised-discourse-and-history reading of the text…. Which apparently, a lot of people did. (See: the outcry when Rue and Thresh’s castings were announced. And they were explicitly described as being ‘dark-skinned’ in the first book, so.)
My fave piece of writing on Katniss’s (possible/likely) ethnicity has long since been deleted, but thanks to google, here’s some others that kind of explain the deal: http://xalexiel.blogspot.com.au/2011/03/why-katni… http://www.xojane.com/entertainment/hunger-games-… http://racebending.livejournal.com/297952.html
I would be Gale, btw. Broken, bitter, reliable, and brimming with hidden subversive rage.
…going by that, I am Gale currently. That would explain why I was so pro-Gale while reading the books. Insight!
The BF was super angsty about being dragged to this movie. He changed his mind when I told him Jenna Malone gets naked in it.
“15. I don’t understand why everyone didn’t have sex constantly during training or while in transit (both movies.)”
TOTALLY. Like, it’s basically the Olympics of the post-apoc future, and we know for a fact that the Olympic pavillion is pretty much an international fuckfest.
Late to this party BUT I HAVE THOUGHTS.
1) Just getting it out of the way, I still prefer the books to the movies, but this was a great improvement on the first movie.
2) I greatly enjoy that Katniss and Effie come across as smarter in the movies than in the books. Book!Katniss seems pretty slow on the uptake a lot of the time, which I think is a downside of 1st person narration and is also why Effie is such a twit. But in the movies, there’s no time for that, so Movie!Katniss is way more on the ball and Effie is DELIGHTFULLY well-rounded. Elizabeth Banks brought a great deal of intelligence to her portrayal in not that much screentime, and it adds a lot to the themes of choosing what to save and playing a part to survive.
3) Something about the way Woody Harrelson says “sweetheart” is more than a little arousing, even with his fake booze-gut.
4) Josh Hutcherson is as great as any tiny little human ever was, and I love Peeta, but Josh Hutcherson as Peeta is terrible. I wish Jena Malone had been less…brittle? Studiedly over-the-top dramatic? But that elevator scene was aces, and I’m glad they dropped the whole “Katniss is so pure” angle.
5) I wasn’t even sad when Cinna died because Lenny Kravitz is a terrible actor and he has cold dead shark eyes, the end.
My view of book!katniss vs movie!Katniss is the opposite of yours. In the books, because I am also in the dark, I am more sympathetic to the fact that things are going way over Katniss’ head. But in the movie people kept giving each other Significant Glances and saying things like “I got them for YOU!” and “you and Peeta need to split up because reasons.” I kept wondering how she could possibly be missing these things.
Yeah, I think if they used teenage actors they could have made them more like the book. Katniss is 16-going-on-17 in this part of the story. God knows 90% of what is happening in Panem would have been over my head at that age, so the book feels like the more honest portrayal of teenage confusion /angst. I mean, if you think about it, District 12, and Katniss as a part of it, is pretty sheltered. The “Katniss is so pure” thing makes sense when we are talking about a teenager from a poor family in an isolated area. (Speaking from experience here.)
ALL THE STANLEY TUCCI FEELS. (honestly, screw everyone else, I want Caesar Flickerman’s job in “if Panem were real” scenario.)
Actually I’m glad they weren’t as gritty and unflinching as they *should* have been, to really portray the harshness of this world. I wouldn’t have been able to handle it as an audience member (let alone a member of the fictional games. :-P) As I was, I was reassuring my jumping and wincing Mother, that, no don’t worry, this part isn’t as gory as you think it’s going to be.
Yes! Johanna/Katniss is giving me all kinds of life this week!!!
The site I help out with has a Catching Fire/Hunger Games workout! Check it out: http://www.paperdroids.com/2013/11/29/catching-fi…
Katniss/Johanna is legitimately the only thing in the Hunger Games I ship. IN MOCKINGJAY KATNISS FRICKEN BRINGS HER A BOUQUET OF PINE NEEDLES TO REMIND HER OF HOME IT’S A LOT
Yes I was thinking the exact same thing. I've knit/woven the cowl from a pattern online but there were at least three or four others I'd love to get patterns for.
