Hahahahaha get ready for another white dude there is NO DOUBT in my mind, all your inspiring suggestions are futile:

“As Alexandra Petri pointed out in The Washington Post last night, in the history of late-night broadcast television, there have been more hosts named Jimmy than women and people of color.”

Thirty years of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”.

A League of Their Own, a movie I have seen more frequently than any other movie, is now on Netflix. You’re welcome.

Now I feel guilty for never having read Peter Matthiessen’s fiction. I’ll fix that.

Like anything that one makes well with one’s own hands, writing good nonfiction prose can be profoundly satisfying. Yet after a day of arranging my research, my set of facts, I feel stale and drained, whereas I am energized by fiction. Deep in a novel, one scarcely knows what may surface next, let alone where it comes from. In abandoning oneself to the free creation of something never beheld on earth, one feels almost delirious with a strange joy.

I’ve always thought late-night talk shows were real dumb, but maybe it’s just that unfunny straight white dudes named Jimmy don’t interest me? I would watch Retta in ANYTHING.

    1. literaltrousersnake +30

For SO LONG I thought I just didn’t _have_ a sense of humour that wasn’t baroque jokes about presbyterians, but then I saw The Heat last year and choke-snorted soda out my face and realized it was actually just no-one was making anything I’d find funny.

    2. literarysara +27

      RETTA

I was also vote for Retta for pretty much anything. Late night talk show host? Obviously. CEO of television? Definitely! President? In a perfect world. . . .

    3. Owl Queen +33

I considered myself humourless and unfunny for the longest time, but then I realised that I just don’t find white male humour funny and everything else is hilarious.

  2. carmencicero +27

The movie I’ve seen more than any other movie is Mean Girls, I’m pretty sure.

      1. carmencicero +31

As with any movie of this caliber, I have it on DVD, and also etched on the inside of my eyelids.

    1. tekkah +7

Mine’s either When Harry Met Sally or Air Force One, I watch both freakishly often.

      1. ArsenioB_Ham +2

Mine is almost certainly also When Harry Met Sally. Might be tied with the Disney Sleeping Beauty.

    2. turanga_leela +20

I think the movie I have watched the most is Room with a View. It came out when I was 16 and I imprinted on Rupert Graves as my ideal male. If I did not have so much work to do today I might go watch it again right now.

      1. themegnapkin +10

Legally Blonde came out the year before I went to law school, and I maintain to this day that (apart from the murder trial part) it is the most realistic of all law school movies.

      1. mbculver +6

Clueless, or The Fifth Element. For awhile it seemed like the latter was always playing on TNT or one of those cable channels.

      2. Rosie +3

        Mine is Clueless too!
If we were to count TV miniseries – it’s Pride and Prejudice.

    3. evieskye +6

Sneakers. (with Casblanca/Charade/Singing in the Rain pulling up as close seconds)

        1. evieskye +5

Nothing like being a weirdo 10 year old girl with a crush on David Strathairn.(I have sat through so many crappy movies just for him)

    4. safvn +18

The 6-hour BBC Pride and Prejudice mini-series, hands-down. Haven’t watched it recently, but it was literally the only thing I laid eyes on from the ages of nine to eleven.

      1. Rosie +6

I can’t even count how many times I’ve watched that! Like you, I started young, because my mom is a big fan. Now my family quotes lines at opportune moments.
        “Oh, NOW I understand.”
“And may one dare ask whose are the eyes that inspired these reflections?”
“I would have him know we dined with four and twenty families!”
“No lace, Mrs. Bennett, I beg you!”
“If I had ever learned, I should have been a true proficient.”

      2. dakimel +2

Once, in the early days of internet friendships, someone I’d never met sent me those DVDs and it was the best and most amazing thing that had ever happened to me (except for, like, mundane life things like marriage & the births of my sons or whatever.)

Still watch it constantly. And other than whatever was playing constantly on HBO back when HBO was new (I’m old) and the movies we had on Betamax (did I mention my age?) (One of the movies was Little Lord Fauntleroy), it’s the movie I’ve seen the very most.

    5. lanascrub +11

Mine is Bring It On. Back when I had access to cable I would watch it anytime it was on; now I just have it on my laptop so I can put on every couple of months and make sure it’s still amazing.

      1. Alli525 +2

I rented Bring It On from Blockbuster so many times that my dad finally gave in and made an illegal copy (ah, VHS) so I would stop wasting his money.

    6. Janie_S +2

Mine is either Empire Strikes Back or Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I’m such a stereotypical nerd.

      1. emlorark +9

I watch When Harry Met Sally and Clueless at least a couple of times a year, but neither will ever catch up to Monty Python and the Holy Grail which I must have watched at least 40 times from the ages of 11-13. What do we burn besides witches? More witches!

        1. tekkah +6

You know, I said When Harry Met Sally and Air Force One up there earlier but if I sit back and start to think about my entire life of moviewatching I’m pretty sure it comes out to a grudgematch the original Star Wars trilogy and Monty Python and the Holy Grail because when I discovered both those things, I marathonned them exclusively for a very, very long time. I distinctly remember finishing off Jedi and putting A New Hope right back in immediately after and just… infinitely looping.

          1. Janie_S +1

YES EXACTLY. There were months and months of just watching-rewatching-rewatching for several summers back in my youth.

    7. anachronistique +7

Probably the Disney Beauty and the Beast, which tells you how old I am and what my comfort movies are like.

      1. dakimel +3

In college, I went on a blind date with a guy who shared my birthday to Beauty & the Beast, and we both loved it, and other than the fact that I’m blissfully happy with my current life, I sometimes think that it was all a sign to my Best Possible Life Path.

    8. deleted2997279 +4

Mine is absolutely Singin’ in the Rain, but close behind it are The Sound of Music, Apollo 13, and Atonement. Excluding of course the Disney movies of my youth (my yut).

If we’re talking TV specials, I apparently watched a VHS taping of the Rockefeller Christmas special from December until April one year in the mid-90’s.

      1. TheBeeperQueen +1

Apollo 13!!! I think I still have most of that movie memorized from when I was 11 and that was all I’d watch.

      2. eleventysix +3

Oh, my god, Singin’ in the Rain! I love that movie to pieces. I saw it in the park last summer and singing along was encouraged and everyone knew the words and I’d had such a shitty day and that turned it around in a snap.

    9. elsamac +6

I’m pretty sure my movie I’ve seen more than any other is Mulholland Dr.

Well. That says something about my interior landscape, doesn’t it?

    10. madgehowlet +7

Super Troopers. But the rule is I can’t go looking for it, it has to find me. Meow.

    11. plspassthePinot +6

Mine is Jurassic Park. It holds up! And the enjoyment factor triples if you bring your 12 yr old nephew and his “cool friend” w you to see it in 3D and they are low-key TERRIFIED half covering their face w the sides of a hoodie and trying to be cool about it.

    12. EPWordsnatcher +5

I think mine is probably 10 Things I Hate About You, or Ghostbusters. I am perfectly happy with this.

  3. tekkah +17

*flails* A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN OMG. *actually considers, momentarily, faking illness to go home and watch it right now*

    *thinks better of it*

    1. CordeliaFitz +2

I’ve never seen it, but I think this is going to be the straw that finally makes me buy a netflix subscription. Then I’m gonna blow off working on a term paper to watch it this evening.

      1. deleted2997279 +3

Yes!! I think the first month is free, even, so go watch it over and over again for the next month then cancel it. Perfect world.

  4. ArsenioB_Ham +21

One 4th of July during high school, I spent the afternoon watching a double feature of “My Girl” and “A League of Their Own” (not sure why the network paired them, but I digress). By the end of ALOTO, I was bawling and I continued for about twenty minutes after the movie ended. I’m pretty sure I scared my mom, who was like, “ARSENIO. Get it together. They’re just movies.”

  5. mbculver +24

Everything about the Angela Merkel sketch is PERFECT. The image of Putin at a party going on about Crossfit is making my day.

    1. tragicallyludicrous +19

The fascinating thing about the Merkel sketches is that…she has a husband, you know? But she’s been able to almost completely keep him out of her public image.

    2. thebellewitch +15

That was the best part! Also glad that “tiny eu-mails” made a reappearance.

      1. mbculver +8

Tiny eu-mails…and going to Makeout Point for boob touches! as;ldkfjaslkdjf;lkd

  6. GreenGrasses +11

That Soul Train line dance… the moves, the clothing, the PLATFORM HEELS!!

    1. deleted2845473 +4

I can’t believe that I haven’t been spending all my time watching Soul Train on youtube. Or wearing gigantic bow ties. I have to make up for lost time.

    2. mkpatter +3

I think Soul Train line dances might be the best thing that has ever been on TV.

  7. PaigePoo +16

Just ran down here to scream TIG NOTARO YESSSSSSSS my life would be perfect forever. Sadly, I think I’ll have to live in a deep dark hole of depression because CBS would never.

  8. turanga_leela +6

“Girls Just Want To Have Fun” came out when I was in 8th grade. It has been 30 years! Now I feel old.

    1. mbculver +4

Same here. AND I loved/was obsessed with Room with a View and Rupert Graves at 16. Anglophile teens, unite!

    2. PonyAlong +4

In feel your Old. I bought the single to play on the turntable in my bedroom. Sigh.

    3. madgehowlet +1

Hey, I am That Old, too! Or close, because I cannot actually remember how old I was in 8th grade, but that sounds right.

  9. mkpatter +10

Hahaha I am watchiing Oz for the first time, and there’s that episode where they try to undermine the governor by saying he’s a crackhead, and I am like, “IF ONLY THAT WORKED.”

Also I hate all those people who take pics with Ford when he’s clearly inebriated on whatever. They’re just enabling him.

  10. liznieve

I didn't either, until I read the comments on that article. Ugh, I need to remember to NEVER READ THE COMMENTS ANYWHERE BUT THE TOAST.

  11. ThatOtherWench

Ugggh, except there's also the rumor about it being Colbert. Which would make me care but in a negative way. Because his current job, at least nominally, is making fun of other white dudes with power. Trading that for being even more in-the-establishment feels like even more insult on injury.
