As if this week had not been excitement enough, tomorrow I am meeting up with Nicole in Sedona (just in time for COWBOY DAYS). I may or may not just move in with her after that; I haven’t decided.

I have finally joined Goodreads, and I am having a marvelous time gleefully flinging one-star reviews at Ender’s Game and Wide Sargasso Sea, while carefully showering books like Death In Yellowstone and Death In Grand Canyon with perfect scores. Do you know of any other books about horrible death rates in national parks? If so, please share them with me immediately.

“Someone could make off with all your garbage that’s put out on the street, and carefully record how many used condoms or pregnancy tests or discarded pill bottles are in the trash, and then post that information up on the web along with your name and your address. There’s probably no law against it in your area. Trash on the curb is public…
We’ve spent so many years being indoctrinated in this new, false definition of what is public that most people will still not concede that there is any complexity to the issue.”
I have only generally followed this ongoing conversation, and I’m not sure all of these analogies quite work — trash is not used to generate conversation or interact with others — but it’s one of the more convincing arguments I’ve seen from the “Twitter is something other than public, sometimes” camp.
I still don’t understand what Medium is. DON’T TRY TO EXPLAIN IT AGAIN. Others have tried, and I’ve listened gamely while wearing my smartest face, and nothing has changed.

Wait, wasn’t Prince with Mayte through the 90s???
There’s a moment in 1994-1995 (when Clueless came out) where Prince was clearly *not* even pretending to be monogamous, because he was involved enough with Carmen Electra to write songs about her, and of course Mayte was his on-stage foil. But it’s clear that he was paying close attention not just to Chili but to TLC’s record label predicament overall, as his 1996 appearance on Letterman ended with him saying, “Free TLC!” then sweeping his cape about him as he rose from the piano bench and stormed off stage.
Am now slightly ashamed at myself for thinking 90s Prince ought to be monogamous. But I still have ~*~feelings~*~ about Mayte after watching the recent reality show with her and Nicole Murphy and etc.
But also the political context! Good one.
But also ALSO who wouldn’t want to date Chilli? (Speaking of VH1 reality shows…..)
You aren’t legally allowed to call yourself British unless you’re willing to give a serial killer a name like ‘Dr Death’ or ‘The Gay Killer’. Sorry.
(One of them died in the prison I used to live right next to. Interesting story, living there we all had little cards posted up by the door telling us that if the alarms were going off we were NOT TO OPEN THE DOOR TO ANYONE AT ALL, and giving us the numbers for the special security line should we see ‘suspicious activity near the prison walls’. Housing prices are cheap there, though)
(also on that list is ‘The Suffolk Strangler’ is the serial killer who was in our area a while back. He murdered five women before he was caught. I remember going out one evening before he’d been captured and seeing how few women were out, and how most of the ones who were were in groups, sober and frightened)
In Kingston (Nicole’s old burgh!) they used to have an enormous prison that was like, a max security prison full of HORRIFYING killers, but it’s located on this absolutely gorgeous piece of prime real estate right on the lakeshore, adjoining with a fancy harbour and expensive houses and all kinds of stuff. Every time I go past it I boggle at the fact that people were paying top dollar to live next door to serial killers.
I mean, presumably the serial killers won’t pop round and ask to borrow your screwdriver, though.
Our prison is medium-high security, and does have murderers and rapists and serial killers there, but the low-risk prisoners currently run a cafe that you can visit and eat at. It’s part of this project to give prisoners real-world skills and stuff so they can get jobs on leaving prison.
The Gay Slayer made a New Year’s resolution to become a serial killer and then did it. So…on the one hand, he followed through on a New Year’s resolution. On the other hand…
My boyfriend grew up very near Broadmoor (for non-UK readers, this is a secure psychiatric hospital where many of the patients have been convicted of serious crimes, like the Yorkshire Ripper) and they have a siren which would go off if a patient ever escaped – it’s so teachers and other people responsible for children can make sure they are all inside and accounted for until the situation is resolved. They test it every Monday, and I’ve heard it while visiting his parents. There was never an escape while he was at school, but once when his brothers were at school, before he was born, they used it as a warning when a prisoner (from an actual prison, not Broadmoor) was passing through the town in prison transport and escaped when they were stopped at traffic lights. Exciting!
They did a whole VEEP Episode on trash and what was in it. Reporters will go through public figures’ trash for info if they can. A reporter I know once went into a serial killer’s apartment to see what books he was reading and look through his trash.
Secure and discreet trash disposal is the next privacy frontier
I did a wiki crawl off that serial killers list and ended up on the list of people who have disappeared mysteriously
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_d…
My favorite thing about this list (which I have revisited many times) is that it’s for people who disappeared MYSTERIOUSLY. Is there such a thing as a not-mysterious disappearance? What makes the presumably excluded unmysterious disappearances less mysterious than all these lost at sea/in the jungle/in a warzone disappearances, which don’t seem all that hard to explain?
I suppose if you left a note that you were disappearing FOREVER and then disappeared it would not be mysterious?
Yeah, I think non-mysterious disappearances are ones where it is quite apparent why they disappeared – they left a note explaining, or a suicide note or something, or someone confessed to murdering them, even if the body was never found.
I guess the ‘disappeared while hiking in the jungle’ ones are mysterious because they don’t know if the hiker got bitten by a snake, caught a fever and died, fell off a rock and died, or ended up being taken in by local inhabitants, getting married and living happily.
There is a really great article on Barbara Follett and her disappearance in Lapham’s Quarterly.
“I pretend,” she once explained, “that Beethoven, the two Strausses, Wagner, and the rest of the composers are still living, and they go skating with me.”
This is such a fantastic quote, haha. Thank you for sharing!
Edit: Clearly she would have been a Toastie:
Follett’s next plan—“to become a pirate” and take to the sea for her new book—was announced in the Times.
GAH!! That list!! So much for being on time for work this morning.
god dammit every time I’m reminded of that page I spend seven hours on it,
Oh my God, Prince and Chilli’s date happened in my city! Possibly the coolest thing to happen in Indy ever.
Man, I always thought I was an extrovert but it turns out I’m just a sea monster.
Whatever! Bog monsters 4 lyfe.
I hope I can be pals with Champ and Nessie. Are they considered the celebrities of the sea monster world? I imagine Nessie a bit like Lady Gaga.
I thought I oscillated between extrovert and introvert depending on my mood, health, and state of mind, but it turns out I too am a sea monster, which explains the oscillating, always oscillating.
I never realized until now how accurately “weave silently through the inky blackness” of boredom and despair describes my general state of being at work.
Why the fuck would anyone suspend a three year old or a four year old? What, exactly, does that accomplish?
BTW, DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS.
Like, I know that should go without saying, but I looked anyway and saw a “why would a 3 year old throw a chair? your child has behavioral issues, stop blaming things on racism..”
Ugh why are people so fucking awful? Also jesus has that person ever met a three year old?
This is exactly what I’d like to know. I think they mentioned that they had children and grandchildren, but perhaps they’ve also recently had some memory loss.
I don’t even have kids and I know better!
Maybe they’re had some chair loss. The only three-year-old who would never throw a chair is a three-year-old who’s never been near a chair.
The minute I started reading I knew people were gonna be all over it with some “Y U PLAY RACE CARD??11??” so I just read the article, thought a little about systematic racism, and then serenely closed the tab.
Also this gif is amazing. Thank you.
Ugh, they’re acting like the kid lifted a solid oak dinning chair and maliciously aimed it at someone’s head. I’m guessing he got frustrated and forcefully knocked over one of those flimsy little kid plastic chairs.
Dat gif tho
I think I bookmarked a gif from a thread I saw here so.. save it, share it, love it. It’s a Toastie gif!
I just want to chime in with gif appreciation! Unrelated to 3-year-old suspensions (which, UGH, why): I spend a lot of time thinking of satisfying ways to respond to street harassment. Like, hissing like an irate kitty is one. I did it yesterday on my way home, with very entertaining results. Becoming a mutant puffer fish/porcupine hybrid and exploding into homing needles is another. Still currently workin on transforming into Thor and reigning down destruction on all of mankind.
But I think instantaneously turning into this gif, holding it for a few seconds, and then turning back again and calming continuing on one’s way, would probably be the best option.
Re satisfying ways to respond to street harassment: I’m seriously considering taking the suggestion of this person on Twitter who posted “Keeping a blood capsule in my mouth for the next guy who tells me to smile.”
Greatest gif.
Ugh, I made the huge mistake of reading the FB comments on that National Geographic article the New Face of Hunger (in yesterday’s Round-Up, go read it!) and they were full of “why have kids you can’t afford” and “lol that lady’s fat she’s not starving” and I was ready to BURN IT ALL DOWN!!
Ugh one of the comments on that article was like “We live in the best country in the world! We’re not being bombed like Syria! Why are we complaining about this??” and I was like EXACTLY BECAUSE WE LIVE IN AMERICA, THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING AND IT IS A DISGRACE.
I read that article as well and you are totally right re: the comment section. Un-fucking-believable the lack of understanding and empathy. And sadly for some, it’s soooo easy to put on those judgement robes and start banging the gavel, you know?
Using myself as a shamed example, I was re-watching a Frontline documentary on child poverty just a couple of nights ago and caught myself hating on a featured parent because seeing small children (and animals) suffer gets me to the core. Sigh.
I didn’t even look! I’m LEARNING!
The comments here are so thoughtful and reasonable that I always go to the comments, expecting discourse and crowdsourced solutions. Instead, I get flames…on the side of my face.
I went the other direction. The comments here are so thoughtful and full of real discussion that I gave up on the comments elsewhere, including a site or two that used to fill my need for intelligent discussion; once I got used to the tone of mutual respect here, I needed a break from the rancor and in-fighting that pass for discourse elsewhere. I LIKE IT HERE, IS WHAT I’M SAYING.
Whatever you do, DO NOT read the comments on that article. I repeat, do not read the comments.
I will try my hardest not to. I already closed that window.
I have a sign hanging up over my computer that says, “Why are you reading that? Close the window!” People sometimes ask me what it’s about, and I say, “Internet comments.” And they go, “Ooohhhhhhhh.”
For your Twitter-reminder needs, Don’t Read Comments.
A few years ago I had a very nice boss, and whenever I came back from lunch he’d be sitting at the computer getting increasingly upset.
“Peter, are you reading the comments again?”
“Yes.”
“WHAT DID I SAY ABOUT READING THE COMMENTS.”
SERIOUSLY I work with kids and I can’t imagine suspending a kid that young, especially for the offenses they were describing (a 3 year old hitting a staff member on the arm is a danger to the staff? really?)
Personally, I can imagine circumstances which would require removing a child that young from school, but they’d involve a long talk with the parents, several psychologists, and a child welfare advocate.
I KNOW. Are they supposed to go home and quietly reflect on their (SUPER SURPRISING, IT’S NOT LIKE THEY”RE TODDLERS OR SOMETHING) lack of impulse control for the rest of the day? I thought time outs were suspensions for 3-year-olds.
Prince and Chilli’s date to see Clueless is giving me life today.
How is suspension even a THING in preschool!? They’re TODDLERS. “A threat to the staff” my ass, he’s four. What the everloving shit.
I have taken this quiz and I am apparently a sea monster. *lurks in the inky blackness*
Now, to lose myself in this thread about Tim Treadwell…
Do you know how easy it is to physically restrain even a really strong four-year-old without hurting him? IT’S REALLY FUCKING EASY. THEY ARE TINY AND NOT VERY STRONG.
This is assuming he’s even actively trying to cause damage, which I’m guessing is not remotely the case.
I absolutely cannot wait to explore the Grizzly Man redux archives at home tonight, and no, I had no idea they existed. THANK YOU MALLORY.
Exactly this! Also, I might just pour a nice hearty glass of red (or dark stout) to go with this wordy deliciousness.
Here’s a clip from The ‘Burbs that nicely explains the Supreme Court ruling about going through someone else’s trash.
In Southeast Asia we’d call this kind of thing bad karma.
Also, introverts and sea monsters apparently have a lot in common. Or perhaps THEY ARE REALLY THE SAME THING.
Surprisingly, so do extroverts and sea monsters!!! IT’S A CONSPIRACY.
Perhaps becoming a sea monster is one of the evolutionary benefits of taking to the sea
From user “hillbilly:”
I wonder exactly which part of “Hey you frickin’ moron, that’s a GRIZZLY BEAR!!!!” that failed to make an impression on Treadwell for all those years?
True enough, sir. True enough.
When Outside ran an article about Treadwell a few years before his death, my takeaway was “that dude’s gonna get et.” I wish I’d been wrong, but the article strongly suggested that Treadwell had gone from not demonizing wildlife to not respecting its power. (I don’t ever intend to watch the movie, but if you like acoustic guitar, do pick up Richard Thompson’s luminously beautiful soundtrack for the film.)
Oh for fuck’s sake, that Treadwell thread includes a whole segment of people arguing whether or not Treadwell’s girlfriend being on her period was the reason they got mauled by bears. Thankfully there are people in there linking to and copy/pasting from studies that say “that’s a bunch of horseshit” anyway, but still.
Oh god oh god menstruation oh god!!! It’s all HER fault they got mauled!
Ahhhh women should never set foot outdoors!!
Yeah like it definitely wasn’t alllll the other factors (time of year, food in the tent, encroaching on bear territory). IT WAS THE LADY PARTS!
I think the reason they got mauled by bears is because BEARS.
Are you obsessed with cute animals?
Yes.
Can they eat you?
Yes.
FIND NEW FRIENDS ABORT ABORT
That myth fills me with rage, because it’s so fucking stupid. Have none of them ever noticed that period blood smells NOTHING like injury-blood? Because it is not, in fact, blood. Then the guy in there compounds his idiocy by saying the girlfriend was in heat, showing an amazing lack of understanding of female fertility (she’s somehow both ovulating AND on her period) and interspecies relationships (why would a bear care if a woman is fertile?). I’m so glad they shut him down quick.
That freaking piece of wilderness garbage is EVERYWHERE! My hunting neighbours are especially keen in passing on that stupid piece of so-called advice so thank you for “period blood smells NOTHING like injury-blood […] Because it is not, in fact, blood”. I’m gonna be so using that!
omg remember the article we ran about SASQUATCH PORN a while back
MAYBE THE BEARS WANTED TO BREED
Anyone who can watch Treadwell’s footage — including one scene included in Grizzly Man, a close-up of a bear just hangin’ around that appeared to be taken with a telephoto lens, right until Timothy Treadwell STICKS HIS HAND OUT in front of the camera and reaches out to pet the bear, because his is CLOSE ENOUGH TO PET IT, at which point I yelped so loudly that the neighbors’ cats freaked out — and think that their death was not brought about by Treadwell’s hubris is someone who is actively looking for a way to blame something other than an entitled, destructive dude who endangered himself, his girlfriend, the bears (who should not have had to become habituated to such intimate human proximity), and other campers.
Agreed. The bears seemed “twitchy” in the footage that was shot right before Treadwell and his partner were killed, or maybe that was just the effect on this viewer of Herzog’s more-than-usually-portentous narration during that sequence.
Treadwell stayed in the backcountry way too late in the season for safety. The bears were likely more hungry than normal and that’s what got him and his partner killed. I think Herzog made that point in the film pretty strongly.
Otherwise they both would have been laid out in lavender the first time GF ever got her period. Years ago, I had my period on a night out in the Alaskan backcountry and was terribly nervous about the tampon, which I killed several species of lichen to bury. No bear even came close, to my knowledge. That being said, normal b’ar precautions apply when you have your period out there, just as they do when it’s time to poo.
YES THANK YOU. I spent a six-week field school camping in the taiga with NINE OTHER WOMEN, and coincidentally none of us were eaten by bears. We were careful about the latrine, but we were a lot more cautious about managing food waste, and we did not try to make pets out of the local fauna.
It’s almost like screwing around with wild apex predators just isn’t a good idea.
Oh God, the experiments to test how bears feel about menstrual blood are AMAZING.
(They threw used tampons at them. They also put tampons on fishing poles and dangled them in their paths. Also menstruating women and non-menstruating women walked a safe distance away from the bears, and the bears reacted the same way to both of them. It sounds like there were about five female wildlife techs one summer, and they were like “hey, let’s get published!”.
Ugggggh my child was EXPELLED from preschool when he was three. The preschool director sprung it on me with no warning, told me my son was “not normal,” and that we were not welcome back. I asked for her and the teachers to put their concerns in writing for me to share with my pediatrician (but really while I contemplated suing their fucking asses) and they wrote this totally bogus bullshit about how he had “never spoken intelligibly to the teachers” (lies: I SAW HIM have a conversation with them about “chicken caesar salad” which is not the kind of word you GUESS a child might be saying, like “truck.”) and that he “never made eye contact” and that he “behaved inappropriately in the bathroom” (one time he got pee on his T-shirt and couldn’t figure out how to solve the problem so he stripped naked and brought his clothes to the teachers AND ALSO they were letting three year olds go to a bathroom not attached to the classroom unsupervised) and basically their problem was that he was an extremely active child and they didn’t feel like coping with him.
Nonetheless this set off six weeks of frantic doctors appointments and meetings with developmental specialists and pediatricians expert in autism and audiologists and occupational therapists that cost us a lot of money and my husband had to miss a ton of work and I was crying all the time and ended up having to have xanax for the stress (also I had a new baby) and one of the pediatricians carefully read their letter after assessing my son for an hour, looked up at me, and asked, “Are you sure this letter is actually about YOUR son and not some other kid?”
Also the preschool is two blocks from my house and for six months every time we passed it, my son would start crying and ask why I wouldn’t let him go to school anymore and play with his friends. (We just told him school was “over” but what do you even say to that?)
We finally enrolled him in a different preschool, where they were awesome, but every day I dropped him off I just felt sick the entire time that these people taking care of my child could be doing ANYTHING and I wouldn’t ever know about it until they suddenly expelled him for bogus reasons.
He starts kindergarten in the fall and I am not excited about it. I can barely sleep for thinking about it.
What I meant to say relevant to the article was, I feel for this woman, this is an extremely traumatic thing to go through. (And also meant to add — we not only had a new baby but we’d just had a death in the family of someone my son was close to, and we TOLD the preschool this and asked them to let us know if he was acting out at all or seemed too sad or anything. Instead, expulsion! So great!)
Also, this is obvs not my regular username because I don’t want to tie my poor son to this story even a little
Oh god, that’s so terrible!
((hug))
“Hmm I have pee on me, I will take off the pee clothes and give them to a grown-up who knows what to do,” seems like a pretty good logical process for a three-year old, jesus.
When my brother was three, he stripped naked, painted himself bright yellow, and set off exploring.
jesus, I am so sorry you and your son went through that. as an educator I unfortunately know how terrible people in this occupation can be, and there is NO excuse for it.
As a former Early Childhood Educator, I am always stunned when these stories surface; I’ve worked alongside groups of women who had dedicated their professional lives to 3-5 year olds and I am the better person for it. They taught me patience, perseverance, tact and above all, empathy.
(I was good at my job, but quickly burnt out and so moved onto a less stressful occupation; but there are times where I really miss those interactions between the staff, kids and parents.)
I don’t need to tell you that a skilled ECE is worth their weight in gold and it’s a total shame that the profession isn’t given the recognition it deserves.
absolutely. I work alongside a ton of early childhood educators who are so dedicated to their craft and to basically doing the exact opposite of what Raaaage’s son’s teachers did — honestly, that story is like the polar opposite of what our training taught us to do, which makes me wonder where teachers like this even come from.
That is TERRIBLE (obviously). My hope, and belief, is that kindergarten will be much better for you all. Best wishes!
Have you met with your kindergarten teachers and principal yet? Maybe that would help you get some peace with the transition? It’s going to be a big transition anyway, without the history your family has had to endure thanks to the ignorance of those numbfucks.
But maybe you can sit with the teacher/principal and spell out what happened, and how that affected your family, and have them explain what they do discipline-wise, and make a plan for your son (and get this written down)?
IDK; any other educators out here have suggestions about this?
I am really, really, REALLY sorry. That is just horrible and I am filled with sympathetic rage hearing it. The walking by the school and your son crying… that is just the worst, it is so hard watching children be sad because other adults are being asshats.
Our daughter is starting junior kindergarten this fall, and yes, we are really anxious about it.
Mallory AND Roxane in the same evening? I have never before wished so intensely for the ability to teleport.
Mallory, I am an Old and instead of just following your reviews on Goodreads I added you as a friend because I don’t know how these things work. Sorry for being a creep. :/
I may do the same. hearyoume, let’s form a Toast Creeps Auxiliary. 🙂
Oh man, is there a goodreads group for The Toast? There should be!
Edit: never mind, found it! https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_folder/0?gr…
I see one of the murderers on that list “set about achieving a New Year’s resolution to become a serial killer”. WHO MAKES A RESOLUTION LIKE THAT.
…serial killers, I guess?
goal-oriented future serial killers?
It’s so unfocused, though! I can understand thinking “I want to kill these people”, but just thinking “Oh, I want to kill enough people that I meet the criteria for a serial killer; doesn’t matter who” isn’t a mindset I can get behind.
Hey, at least he kept his resolution. How many among us can make that same claim?
This is a luminous link round up and now I’m energized to get some work done! haha 😉
Mallory, if you cannot find me when you get to the hotel, ask for the mysterious woman draped head-to-toe in SPF fabrics fanning herself with a copy of Town & Country.
NO WAIT I’M GONNA BRING ALL THESE FUCKIN’ DOMINICK DUNNE NOVELS INSTEAD.
Mallory is flying home w me after and we are going to WORK OUT WITH MY TRAINER TWICE and overload all of my husband’s circuits with our feminine energy so he has to withdraw to the basement to lift weights and eat beef jerky to maintain equilibrium.
But…you will be there, lifting weights and eating beef jerky, no?
not in the basement, like ANIMALS
just start calling the basement his paddock
August 15. The Last Bookstore. Noted. !!!
MALLORY MALLORY I re-found the Death In Death Valley epic read I wanted to share and you gave me the perfect Link Roundup to do so THANK YOU
http://www.otherhand.org/home-page/search-and-res…
And there went three hours of my morning. Awesome.
My personal favourite Wiki article is List of lists of lists.
This article is a list of articles comprising a list of things that are themselves lists of things, such as the lists of lists listed below.
I read that whole narration like Xzibit.
“List” doesn’t even seem like a real word to me anymore.
I did it with this on mental repeat:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2jUhnCU9iA
Yo, I heard you like lists
It is perfect, though after seeing “list” repeated so many times I am no longer sure it is a word.
I am CRYING with laughter right now.
“When photos of children were paired with descriptions of crimes, the subjects judged the black children to be more culpable for their actions than their white or Latino counterparts and estimated that they were an average of 4.5 years older than they actually were.”
this blows my mind. 4.5 years is… a very significant difference when you are a child. ughhh ‘murrica 🙁
The privacy thing is particularly apropos because my city has been TAKEN OVER by a bunch of horrible anti-abortion protestors, who’ve not only planted themselves by the new Planned Parenthood construction site every day with graphic photographs, but have also interrupted a religious service at a Unitarian Church, handed out fliers in the doctor’s neighborhood saying “your neighbor is a murderer,” and protested in front of her private home. The group harasses women going into clinics and takes pictures of their license plates. These are people who would, quite literally, dig through your trash and make the contents public, because they’re the worst.
I don’t know about the rest of the privacy stuff, but I do know that in Canada recording a conversation without the consent of one of the participants is a crime.
Wait, I’ve always heard that the opposite is true in Canada: only one participant in the conversation needs to know it’s being recorded. I found this article, where a Canadian lawyer states that: “It is also legal in Canada for someone to record a conversation without you knowing as long as ‘the party recording it knows it’s being recorded.’
‘You can walk around with a tape recorder all day long if you wanted to in Canada,’ Levitt said.” Source
Yes, you are correct. You only need the consent of one of the participants (eg yourself, if you are recording your own conversations). But you can’t, for instance, record a meeting if you are not a participant, even if it is in a public park.
Two books National Park/death books
Ranger Confidential by Andreas Lankford–she was a ranger at several different parks throughout the US, longest at Grand Canyon and Yosemite
Pickets and Dead Men by Bree Loewen–she was a climbing ranger at Mt Rainier
One of the Ranger Confidential deaths was this one about the 1999 base jumping protest off El Capitan where a woman couldn’t get her chute open in time http://articles.latimes.com/1999/oct/23/news/mn-2…
Can we please have an Early Childhood Educator write a piece about how the whole “violent behavior” label is completely unnecessary for children under the age of say 6 or 7? Because having been around a varied group of babies-through-toddlers-through-5 y.o. kids, I will honestly say that the only kids who aren’t behaving violent at one point or another are the ones who have behavioral issues that make it harder for them to socialize with other children.
Kids hit, bite, scratch and spit because they don’t have verbal maturity. That’s IT. Girls do it less-so than boys because they mature earlier, but every kid has done it or will do it.
We all have this fantasy in our minds about how placid and calm children should be at all times; I used to think that myself. I even complained to a neighbor because her kids were yelling too much while playing (they were about 4 or 5) – I was really ignorant for doing that, but having kids and being around my relative’s children made me realize that kids are like that!
That’s not to say parents are not totally embarrassed by their kids’ behaviors, but honestly we need to cut people some slack.
Our whole Puritanical Parenting paradigm is outmoded and just wrong.
Good, good. Mallory can take over the Goodreads Toast group then.
Yay Sedona!!! Have fun and don’t buy too many crystals, they don’t do anything!
I AM a sea monster, and it’s pretty great!
P.S. Added you on Goodreads, you can follow me back if you want most really annoyed reviews of fantasy, occasionally scifi novels.
So all the cool Toast things will be happening in LA as soon as I relocate to DC, huh? I SEE HOW IT IS / THIS IS PERSONAL
ah gdi the one week i am not in los angeles 🙁
Instapaper works great on Medium. I have it set up to send articles to my Kindle where I can read them in stationary black and white like a civilized person. Highly recommend.
