This is one of my favorite of Kyle’s videos, not least because I am fairly confident he wrote this sketch after buying (and because of) the jacket.
The voice is absolutely inspired. It brings tears to my eyes. And what makes this lovely and heartwarming is that the joke is never “Aren’t sports stupid.” It’s much more layered than your average “what is sportsball” tweet. It’s about the poverties of language. It’s about ritual. It’s about the JACKET. This beautiful, rare, sports jacket.
“What are you talking about,” Kyle’s interlocutor asks repeatedly, unable to keep himself from laughing. Kyle stiffly points at the quadrants on the Ultimate Sportcoat. Football. Soccer ball. Hockey sticks. SPORTS.
Have you ever watched a toddler grow increasingly frustrated as they try to explain something they feel incredibly passionate about but don’t yet have the words for? Their exasperation approaches the level of art as they realize the limitation of communication; that is what we see here.
Now we’re going have to wait another two whole games. Nichols is on the sideline. Benjels is over there, making the worst calls. Round 2 Versus Nichols. Go Dennison.
