Jane Marie is a writer, mother, fighter and lover.
yessss welcome Jane Marie please stay always
seriously NEVER LEAVE US WE LOVE YOU
i’m so glad bargain bin has a home at the toast! i’ve been reading this since yr days at the hairpin and it’s always a highlight of my fridays.
Goth Tribble Sweater, yes.
I need about six of the goth trees, one for each room and closet of my apartment, including the bathroom.
Jane! Hi, Jane! Welcome!
BRB, shaving the cat so I can DIY that sweater.
That isn’t even an actual peplum, is it? I’m pretty sure a peplum is a separate piece of fabric that’s sewn on. That’s just a weirdly flared shirt.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Jane! Welcome! PLEASE NEVER LEAVE US and guide us in your wisdom.
Now if you’ll excuse me I’m just going to pop over to the Sephora tab and see what’s on for $10.
That $10 is $13 for Canadians, because of course it is.
Of course it is.
(The other thing that keeps me from too much Bargain Bin spending is that it’s usually a case of US shipping free, shipping to Canada THREE BILLION DOLLARS)
I will never get over the time I was trying to buy a dress from Modcloth until I got to the shipping section of the check out page and the shipping charges for the $50 dress was an additional $50.
And we don’t get the same deals, it looks like! Those pencils are not there.
I bought those eye pencils! And then $40 worth of other stuff so I could get free shipping.
…you win again, Sephora.
Does this mean we can start talking about makeup again? Inquiring femmes want to know!
The Return of Jaaaaane
Does this mean Jolie Kerr might return, too, after the great Gawker exodus?
She said in her last Deadspin post (which was amazingly, delightfully GROSS) that Clean Person is moving to GQ.
THE PITCH BLACK CHRISTMAS TREE. This Christmas, bring the DRAMA.
Pitch black Christmas tree, the best way to say “Oh my god, mom, fine, I got a tree.”
Perfect for displaying all your mini daggers and pictures of young Siouxsie Sioux.
Those wrong side right side earrings could be easily adapted as decorations too!
I am now imagining that as the description of this tree in the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog, and you know, that only makes it better.
My cat would definitely want me to get that sweater. I’d end up with claw marks all over my torso from him going after the pompoms, but the price of fashion is pain or something.
Also, on the Canadian Sephora site it isn’t $10 deals, it’s $13 deals. Tricky, Sephora, very tricky.
I picture my cat pulling that sweater off its hanger onto the floor, then beating the pom poms senseless with her back legs.
Every time I laugh at everything and then there’s that *one thing* that gets me. This time it’s those shoes. I need those.
They are out of stock! *sob* I was already building outfits around those f*ckers.
Asos has a ton of cute pointed flats rn.
Gonna buy this tree and decorate it with the bones of my enemies
I already have a set of glitter skull tree ornaments, if boiling their bones takes too long.
Glitter sounds good maybe I will put a glitter paint finish on the bones of my enemies
Mental picture = crafting vikings?
ohhhh I JUST realized that everything on this list is black because it’s black friday
I am not particularly sharp today
That’s cool, I needed you to point it out. It is indeed National Drawstring Pants Day.
Apparently today is also Black Friday for flights because two people have messaged me today about visiting me from the UK and are booking flights and I am SO excited.
Thank you so much for mentioning this, since it prompted me to see if the flight I was planning to book was going to be on sale — and it was! I saved almost $200!!
Aaaah! I’m so glad!
Idk if anyone uses Clinique products, but if you do, the Clinique website is having 20% off orders of $65 or more with free shipping! And if you buy Clinique products (especially their face care line), you know that $65 is CHUMP CHANGE.
I used the offer to buy my favorite mascara (High Impact) and the only moisturizer I will ever use (Moisture Surge). And I pretty much got the mascara free with the discount. Sweet.
Aw yeeeeah. Gonna get me some chubby sticks, I am.
Fun Peak Mom Story from yesterday. I brought the wrong eyeshadow with me (wrong shade w/ my eyeliner, aka the least important problem ever), so I went to ask my mom “Hey, do you have any eyeshadow from one of those Clinque Free Gifts you’re always getting?”
*WHUMP*
She puts a gigantic shoe box with TEN YEARS’ WORTH OF CLINIQUE FREE SAMPLES on the bathroom counter. Woohoo expired lipsticks!! (And like three compacts of unused eyeshadow! And blush! And lip gloss!)
I have bought so many full-sized Clinique products because my grandma gave me the sample size. I wonder if they know how much business they get via moms and grandmas.
It’s a sound business plan. No matter how many cosmetics I buy from Cool Brands, it’s never as good as That Stuff My Mom Gifts Me.
Are you ready to start dressing in “wearable art?” No? You’re not old and rich yet? You’ll get there.
I dream a dream where someday my Pinterest fashion board is inspirational and not aspirational.
Not a Black Friday-only event, but my early Christmas present from my boyfriend arrived this week and it is THE BEST THING and I’d been dropping hints about it for the entire duration of our relationship and I finally have it:

Want to drink inhuman amounts of tea? Too lazy to boil water? This amazing Japanese gadget that I can’t succinctly describe in English will heat water to the temperature of your choice and keep it there as long as you want so you can dispense it at your leisure. Also good for anything you could possibly need four liters of hot water for, like instant mashed potatoes or scalding your enemies.
I have one and it is the best thing ever!!! And what is up with not having a word for this in English? We use a Croatian word, cajnik (chai-nik) but that does not help when telling most people about it.
I have one too! It’s just called an electric tea kettle, in France. It switches off once the water’s boiling, right? And heats up again once it’s cooled down a bit?
And “chainik” is also the Russian word for a regular teakettle.
An electric kettle boils once and turns off. A device that keeps water at a constant temperature is an urn, or, if you must, a tea urn.
My boyfriend has one that is definitely a kettle (it’s kettle-shaped! And it turns off automatically, but you can set it to stay at a constant temperature if so desired), but a Fancy Kettle.
making ramen suddently became so tough and time consuming after moving out of my parents’ home and away from our japanese electric hot water gadget. these things are the best!
we have one of these in my office so we can constantly replenish our mugs of tea. It’s AWESOME (except when it runs out when you are trying to use it and you have to fill it up and wait for it to reboil…)
I unironically love that black tree and if i had my own art deco palace i would definitely be putting one up with silver and fuchsia trimmings.
I also adore white trees with purple+teal trim (but avoid the gold, or else you risk looking like an 80s’ Fat Tuesday theme)
JAAAAAAAAAAANE! Welcome! How I have missed blowing my pocket change on your bargain bins!
I need one of those goth trees, to match my black tinsel goth wreath that I got for like 80 cents at Michael’s on the day after Halloween, and I will just cover my face in eyeliner and listen to depeche mode and the cure until next Halloween.
Yayyayyayyayyay! Welcome to the Toast, Jane Marie!
I had a black tree for the longest time. It was so pretty.
My sister gave me a mini black tree from I think Urban Outfitters and a set of mini ball ornaments. I keep it on a hall table year-round and keep telling myself I will decorate it seasonally, but nada so far.
Jane Marie’s writing for the Toast now? It truly is the start of the Holiday Season, yay!
Ah! These posts were always the only time I could afford anything from Anthro, so glad to see them back!
I honestly don’t want anything of this ( a miracle!), but I do want to say hello to Jane Marie!
Hello Jane so happy to see you here.
I wanted to post a picture of my baby’s halloween spider costume (fuzzy socks stuffed and sewed to some footies to make extra legs) as my DIY, but can’t post photos here? 🙁 Happy to see this feature though.
You can! You just have to upload them to an outside source (imgur, flickr, photobucket…) and then you can embed them in your comment with the “img” HTML tags.
JAAAAANE HOORAY IT’S JANE OMG.
No on the Ungaro sweater, but YES to that miniskirt. Tho no to what it probably costs. Also yes to black xmas trees. I desperately need one so I can cover it in clear glass and tiny matte white ornaments.
Hurrah, Jane Marie and crazy sale stuff!
Gasped with delight when I saw Jane and the Friday Bargain Bin here. Hooray! And I am totally ready to start dressing as wearable art.
i’m late to this but yessss, jane! also i want that goth tree.
I like how this is a joke post but also not really??
JAAAAAAAAAAANNNE!!!!!
I’m 30 and I would still wear those earrings. #confusedgothforlyfe
yessssss i have always loved this series of Jane’s!! so psyched to have it now appearing on the Toast. <3 <3
Loved the black Christmas tree 🙂
And then if it doesn't fit, $25 rush shipping back cost to make sure it crosses the border in time for the return window. I call it the changeroom tip. 🙁
we have one of these in my office so we can constantly replenish our mugs of tea. It's AWESOME (except when it runs out when you are trying to use it and you have to fill it up and wait for it to reboil…)
Hello everyone! Sorry, late to my own party (typical), but I just wanted to thank y’all for the warm welcome. I feel so lucky to be here can’t wait to commune with you every week. My heart, it full.

Great to see you Jane! Followed from Millihelen!
JANE!!!! I have enjoyed your writing since The Hairpin, and thanks to you I can (sort-of) do my own eyeshadow. Glad to see you here!
I don’t like the products
