THANK YOU THIS IS MY FAVORITE. It also has Eddie Izzard and some of the absolute worst Yorkshire accents ever caught on film.

Wait, they were trying for Yorkshire accents?
houblonchouffe+24
I haven’t ever decided whether they’re trying for ironically bad Yorkshire or if they’re just completely incapable of it.
In any event I think my father-in-law and his wife have some version of this conversation with MrChouffe every time they’re together.

Trying for ironically bad ones, I think. Everyone here is capable of doing good ones.

At the very least, Harry Enfield knows that you don’t just drop t’ in at random.

Have you seen Blow Dry? I’m watching it on Netflix now, and I had to pause it to come over here and tell you about Josh Hartnett’s dreadful Yorkshire accent.
daisicles+7
There is so much puzzling about that movie that Josh Hartnett’s dreadful accent is just sort of the tip of the iceberg. Like, okay, I can definitely see where there would be sufficient interest in a film about hairstyling competitions to make one. I might’ve even watched it if I hadn’t been at the height of my Alan Rickman fangirl stage because I live for random sparkly movies. But obviously nobody thought there’d be a lot of interest because otherwise Hollywood would’ve taken it over and set the whole thing in America with more well-known American actors or at least not in Yorkshire because Yorkshire might as well be Narnia if you’re a Hollywood producer. And yet someone thought there’d be enough interest to cast both Josh Hartnett and Rachael Leigh Cook during a period when they were both doing pretty well career-wise.
Like, his accent is exactly what I expected, so why did they cast him?
(And thus concludes my thoughts on Blow Dry, which I did actually enjoy reasonably well when I watched it a good 10 years ago.)

I decided, the moment I saw Bill Nighy in a glitter-covered pompadour, that this was a movie about which I would not be asking any questions.

Obviously the correct approach.

I also ate pizza and had a bottle of hard ginger ale. And did some knitting. The perfect end to a shitty week.

Craig Ferguson’s The Big Tease is the superior hair dressing competition film.
Kulturschnepfe
Did anyone notice it also has Hugh Bonneville of current Downton Abbey fame in it? That’s one of the things I definitely remember apart form it having a lot of interesting people (actors) in it. Otherwise, I remember it as watchable but rather strange …

Ah, y’were lucky. We never had a lake to be evicted from. We often thought t’usselves, sitting at t’bottom of t’mud puddle, how nice ‘twould be to have once lived in t’lake.
bucklemeswash+35
A mud puddle? LUXURY! When we were evicted from the lake we ‘ad to clean out mud puddles with our tongues, 59 hours a day, 18 days a week, and when we got home our dad would grind us into a fine powder, put us in capsules, and take one a day to keep himself forever young.

The Handsome Sidekick’s from Yorkshire and this joke comes up regularly.
What’s funny is that I always think that his accent has been muted somewhat, having spent nearly 20 years here. But then I was talking to the barista in our local cafe recently, and she asked me where i was from, originally, and I’m like, ‘Uh… here?’ and she said she thought I was from the UK, and I laughed and realised that here I am, thinking how Aussie is the Handsome Sidekick’s accent, when all the while, his ‘down’t pit’ and ‘owt/nowt’ is rubbing off on me instead!
