The Ten is very nearly as good as Wet Hot American Summer. THERE, I SAID IT. Liev Schrieber is perhaps the most underappreciated comic actor of his generation. That is all.

The Ten is one of my all-time favorite movies and I am perennially furious that it is not legendary and only my best friend and I seem to love it enough. It’s like comedy anarchy. I love it so fraggling much.
Woondy’s.
I think I still like Wet Hot American Summer more, but I don’t think there’s anything in it I quote as frequently as “I DID IT AS A GOOF!!”
The goof bit and “You’re doing it!” from WHAS come up quite a bit in our household.
Also, I misquote bits of the cat scan sketch that even I wouldn’t recognize I was attempting to quote if I didn’t know better. Usually if I can just fit “cat scan” in there somewhere my wife will know what I’m talking about.
Double also…the scene from the WHAS show where the murderous spy guy is explaining that he was [SPOILER] whole time.
I think the moral is that I’m terrible at quoting and my wife is impeccable at it.
OH man I just remembered one time I smashed my head on a freezer door at work and I said “Oh fuck my cock” a la David Hyde Pierce’s character in WHAS, and my undergrad was right there and it was super awkward and we both pretended like it didn’t happen.
The moral here is that I am very, very professional.
I don’t know what the hell I just watched but I like it.
Watching this with zero context is delightful.
1) I want to see this movie.
2) Liev Schreiber is an excellent comedic actor. I want to recommend the movie Mixed Nuts, but I haven’t seen it in quite some time and now I am worried that I will find the treatment of his character problematic.
Here’s an SNL skit with Liev Schreiber where he makes me laugh AND feel funny in my swimsuit parts*.

*Full disclosure – he always makes me feel funny in my swimsuit parts
Ditto
Please forgive me for thinking of Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth, primarily.
Is this the place where I may express my admiration for this moment of Prudence? “You don’t say anything that suggests your father’s new wife is pressuring him to go into debt to keep her in jewels or minks or hydroelectric dams”
HYDROELECTRIC DAMS Mallory, never change
So that’s where the hell your old Twitter bio came from. Now tell us about “Vera said that?”
Update: Googled. Simpsons quote. Should have guessed.
Anyone else here listen to Liev Schreiber’s episode of Radiolab? Robert Krulwich fell all over himself introducing him–“I honestly think he is the greatest…living…actor.” And then Schreiber read the Italo Calvino story “The Distance of the Moon” to a live audience. It is hands-down my favorite thing Radiolab has done.
YEEEEESSSS I liked Liev Schreiber before that but that one performance elevated my opinion of him like nothing else.
I will use any opportunity to proclaim that Philip Seymour Hoffman was the most underappreciated comedic actor of his generation, if only because he was so highly regarded as a dramatic actor.
His role in “Along Came Polly” automatically puts that romcom in my top 5 favorite comedies of all time.
Mallory, have you seen Goon? I think you’d love it as Liev is one of the comedic highlights.
In terms of hilarious actors not known for comedy, I’m giving Jon Hamm the slight edge. He even makes SNL watchable when he’s on. WATCHABLE!!!!
GOON IS SO GREAT
OMG GOON. It sat on my Netflix queue forever and then I finally watched it and it was glorious, like a sunset with california condors or something.
Using this as an excuse to link to the best thing Jon Hamm has ever done or will ever do:

Goon is one of my favorite movies of all time. We may yell “Greek fucking underground gay porn hard!” a lot around here. And tell each other “my stomach light needs your stomach light.”
He’s also the narrator for ‘Secrets of the Dead’ on PBS. This pleases me.
I luuuuuuurve me some Liev Schrieber. I would happily watch him paint a wall, but it’s even better when he speaks.
I once went to this off-Broadway opening night party and HE WAS THERE and it really wasn’t a large space and I snuck many glances. It’s amazing, the connection we managed to have without speaking at all.

I saw him play MacBeth with Jennifer Ehle as Lady MacBeth in Shakespeare in the Park! They were excellent and amazing and this is why we have live theater!
This is probably the only time I will ever disagree with the Word of Ortberg but no, no it is not.
That being said, the whole movie should have just been the CAT scan scene on a continuous loop.

The Baxter is the most underrated awesomely hysterical movie from the State guys. Wet Hot American Summer is, of course, excellently bad and I adore it, but the Baxter is a grown up movie with them, and it is all the stuff they do so well plus Peter Dinklage as a wedding planner named Benson Hedges.
I just realized that I never watched The Ten because it got such terrible reviews. But so did WHAS, and that was greatness, so why the hell did I let that stop me?
Several times my boss has told me wistfully that he wants a portable ultrasound but his wife disapproves. Several times. As in more than once.
It’s inexplicable that noone has mentioned Schreiber’s role in _The Daytrippers_ (along with Parker Posey, who I assume must be a Toast favorite). Absolutely wonderful.
