I am LOVING the Toast, you guys. Everything is so great! Are you going to have advice columns? I could write a relationships one; I’m very good at advice answers, even though I have little actual experience and am not good at doing the best thing myself. ANYWAY. I agree with previous calls for toast recipes, including French toast, because I tried to make some the other day and it was horrendously soggy and awful. Not that it mattered, because the ungrateful Bergy Bits were having none of it.
Sea_Money+2
They rejected the concept of French Toast? Rude! (Although I really was awful about things I would and would not eat as a child)
My french toast is always too dry. So maybe french toast advise is in order.
icebergmama+2
They wouldn’t even TRY it, the little buggers!
roxythroatpunch+5
this French toast is awesome and one of my favorite SK recipes. (Everyone reads Smitten Kitchen right? Because everyone should.)
Site_for_Soris+2
AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH this looks SO GOOD. And I have a whole loaf of slightly stale challah bread so this is HAPPENING
practical cat+1
Yes, yes this recipe is the BEST.
Site_for_Soris+1
hmmmmmm. I made it. And it is DELICIOUS. But I am going to say that it’s not really French Toast. It is more like…. cinnamon toast bread pudding. Which is fine by me!! Just…. not french toast.
roxythroatpunch+9
Also, kids rejecting food you slave over is SO ANNOYING. My 2.5 year old helped me make a flag cake from scratch yesterday and then immediately spit out her first (and only bite), scoffing, “I not like this, Mama.” WELL EXCUSE ME.
icebergmama+9
RIGHT? “Don’t yike it.” That’s what you said about Play-doh.
roxythroatpunch+5
Meanwhile, she was harrassing me for a bite when I was creaming the butter. “I want a bite, Mommy! I want a bite, Mommy!” Child. It is BUTTER. Even Paula Deen (probably) doesn’t lick the batter when it’s just straight butter.
lyetteann+5
G eats salt right out of the box. Our girls are weird.
mbculver+2
My cousin used to eat butter right off the stick. Even I, who ate “raw” hot dogs and powdered cake batter as a kid, thought that was gross.
roxythroatpunch+1
Hah! My sister used to eat dried oatmeal packets, and sometimes “half-wet, half-dry.” Kids are so weird.
mbculver+2
My husband eats raw oats for breakfast every morning with nuts and raisins and soy milk. I guess it’s kind of like unprepared muesli? Not my thing, but he’s doing him.
There’s a place down the street that has the best French toast ever and I’m too embarrassed to go there Every Single Weekend. But I love it so! Does this happen to anyone else?
lyetteann+11
I would offer to write a column for parents or people considering parenthood, but after this week the entire thing would be “Sell them to the circus.”
mbculver+2
Take a deep breath, don’t sell them to the circus, and remember that it gets better! My 10-year-old girl is so great right now – helpful and sweet and loving and funny and great to have conversations with. I’m reveling in it now, given that by the Law of Averages, teenagerhood should be quite the trial.
charlottecat+1
I want toast recipes but I first need actually decent tasting vegan bread. Maybe vegan bread recipes for people who don’t know how to make bread? Or maybe toasted pita or something. I could go for that.
Isa is amazing and walks you through it. Such a great First Bread.
charlottecat+1
Thank you! This looks good. I should have known to look there.
charlottecat+1
The Toast is amazing so far, though.
Faintly_Macabre+1
I second people saying challah. The only tips I have absorbed (ha, ha) from my dad are that and sprinkling it with cinnamon and sugar. Also, Flour Bakery in Boston makes some of the best French toast I have ever eaten (it’s either baked or reheated in an oven, not sure), but I can’t find a recipe online. They do have a cookbook, though.
Red+8
I’m ALSO loving the toast! WOOO! So happy to see you both back on my internet radar. YOU ALL! JOLIE TOO! Sorry Jolie, Jezebel is not on my internet radar, nor is gawker anything. SORRY!!!! I LOVE YOU GUYS THOUGHHHHHHH
where’s the tiny text WHERE’S JANE
well I mean you did say gossip right

friendly gossip only of course, of the I love everyone variety.

SOME OF US HAVE ALSO WRITTEN FOR GAWKER RHC

THAT PART WAS DIRECTED AT YOU.
ALTHOUGH I DID READ YOUR POSTS ON GAWKER.
AND ALSO YOURS ON JEZEBEL JOLIE BUT THIS JUST FEELS BETTER.

Is it weird that one of the things I find most refreshing about The Toast is that it doesn’t have the same design/interface as The Hairpin and (old-style) Jezebel? Yay, guys! This feels so fresh and new!
missellabell+2
YES. I really like it, too. A new place! A chatty lovely new place!

Hurray!!

I love that the comment sections seem to be non-glitchy (so far?).

I jusst miss her, okay?!

I am loving loving loving The Toast and I hope you guys are proud of your work on your end! I want this to be a success and not just because I desperately need more long form pieces to read at work. Also I second the suggestion for more toast/bread/carbohydrate-centered content.
dianeleighshipley+6
I picked a bad time to cut out gluten.
amativus+13
It’s always a bad time to cut out gluten.
dianeleighshipley+3
You’re telling me.
lyetteann+2
I have to say, the King Arthur GF bread mix makes the most real-bread-y GF loaf I have tried. It’s allllllmost like actual sandwich bread.
Sigh. Almost.
dianeleighshipley+2
Ack, I live in the UK where everything is terrible. But I probably wouldn’t bake my own bread anyway, I have to be honest.
roxythroatpunch+1
The Toast! You have kept me sane and awake at work this week, and for that I thank you. I cannot wait for more!
coaltarepoxy+1
Great first week ladies! I’m loving the content so far and looking forward to reading more.

Truth: challah bread makes the best toast. You may think otherwise, but you are wrong.

Happy first week! Thank you for publishing me and MORE IMPORTANTLY some great ladies whose work I plan to read more of. Also, when will the ranking of Mitford Sisters begin or did I miss it? (Spoiler alert: I’m going Nancy first. Yes.)
Lucienne+1
TBH, the only dilemma is whether to put Nancy or Decca first, isn’t it? And whether to put Diana last or let her be second-to-last because points for gumption/wonderful faces.
dianeleighshipley+1
Yes! Exactly. Tempted to put Pam last because of boringness.

Cheers to our Toastmasters for such a wonderful first week!

I love The Toast I love The Toast I love The Toast and I love toast, and the sea.
And!
Last night I stood in front of a room full of strangers and read a thing I wrote about being fourteen at at an all girls school, and they laughed! In all the right places! And nobody told me to get off stage! And people thought I was funny! And none of them were the people I was writing about, which was what I was most worried about, to be honest.
And now I have a bag of discount Curlywurlies and wine. It’s like Easter, only without Jesus!
Sea_Money+1
HURRAY for you! I love it when people laugh in the right places!
missellabell+5
Thank you! I never read anything before ever, and I jumped right in with “Slags, Virgins and Lesbians: A Completely True Story About Being 14”. I am sort of wondering where to publish it now, because if people laughed it *must* be funny. I read it, and then I was so relieved that I promptly got extremely drunk. Thank you again!
roxythroatpunch+6
There’s this new website I’ve heard about that you could pitch it to…
missellabell+2
Hahaha! I am thinking about it, but I’m worried that it wouldn’t translate to American so well; I talk a lot about fannies (the rude kind) and the NSPCC Youth Disco and the Young Conservatives and I don’t think any of those things happen in America.
But, maybe! The Royal Navy is the dignified side of England- maybe they also want to show the dreadful rural adolescent flipside?
greyhavens9+2
No harm in submitting it!
loren_smith+3
Did you read the story here earlier in the week about line-ups? With the apple pictures? Go for it!
haleycrain+1
Pitch it pitch it pitch it!!!
Perhaps you could explain a couple things to us Americans in footnotes? Check out the footnotes on the Sarah Pebbletush piece! They’re tops!
TARDIStime+2
or you could just hyperlink to the wikipedia page for those things, so if people are like “WTF is that?” they can just click and find out for themselves.
laureleye+5
I’m so glad The Toast’s first week is also a week during which I have very little to do at work so I’ve been able to read everything right away. Everything published this week was so good! More Toast!
johnwthompson+4
Happy weekversary (??) to the Toast, a sterling first week, very proud of Mallory (rip melis) and Nicole, I’m drinking sweet tea in their honor. Does anybody else have like… a definite and fixed internet attention span? Like I can keep up with 3 sites at any one time. Right now I’ve got twitter and a local Denver thing and I guess the Toast, now. I feel like drifting from the Awl sites is a failure but in truth I hadn’t read the primary site for its own sake in some months, and I didn’t check the HP every day anymore. I’ve been so busy.
Blah, I had a big long thing all written out and my browser decided to refresh itself. Ah well. Anyway, in sad but inevitable news, my Alzheimer’s stricken grandmother died last night. It was sudden but not unexpected – we had been talking about hospice care, my grandpa who had been caring for her full-time for years was talking about a roadtrip tour of the great national parks – and we’re as relieved as we are sad, I think. She deserved better than she got. In truth we were never close, we were both meek people and that side of my family’s always been remote. But there will be some things to attend to when we get home. Other things in my life are looking up, though. These next few months may be transformative, I don’t know.
If anybody wants snapchat videos of teeming Collie packs, tho, hit me up. My North Carolina relatives have bred them for years and it’s ghastly in the way breeding is, but the animals themselves seem happy in each others’ company and that of people. They’ve got a massive yard to share.
Site_for_Soris+2
Oh, I’m so sorry about your grandmother. Big hugs for all that’s involved in life transitions.
johnwthompson+2
Thanks. The call came last night and sleep helped a lot.

It’s so nice when a thing one likes (such as The Toast) is liked by the people who actually do the work (such as yourself).
I was hanging out with a bunch of awesome lady-people a couple of weeks ago, and the place we were stayed echoed with laughter pretty much the whole time. When there wasn’t laughter, there was generally good companionship. My comment then was, it’s nice to wake up in an actual, non-ironical, House of Mirth.
Companionable, good humored where appropriate. Yes. That.
mkpatter+1

dianeleighshipley+1
Well done! I totally want to do a storytelling show one day, but I know I’d sweat uncontrollably. (I’m not saying this would stop me, but its something to consider.) If you get chocolate and booze, though..
missellabell+1
DO IT DO IT DO IT. The guy who runs the night I did had been asking me for ages, and I kept chickening out because everyone who read was a Real Proper Funny Human Who Gets Money For Being Funny, and I am basically an idiot with an overactive Twitter. And then I did it! And it was amazing. And everyone was incredibly nice. And now I feel all smug and boozy. DO IT DO IT DO IT and report back.
dianeleighshipley+1
I will, I promise! Am not really in a place to do it, health wise, right now. I actually wonder if I’m in a place to do it location wise, either. But I can at least a. find out, b. write something I could read.
Site_for_Soris+2
I took the day “off” to finally write up my thesis into a manuscript (one year later….) and I’ve tone a tolerably decent job of sticking to my self-appointed schedule, although I did take longer breaks than I was supposed to and almost completely finished a new quilt top?! And I have also subsisted all day on carbonated yogurt drinks, pie, and cheddar cheese. Now that I’m typing this out, it makes some sense why I’m feeling a little off balance today. In other news, I survived the holy terror that is Chicago 4th of July merry-making. Oh, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the range and quality of content here. You guys are off to a fantastic start and I’m very much looking forward to weeks to come! Happy Friday everyone!
johnwthompson+3
Carbonated yogurt drinks??
Carbonated yogurt drinks…
Site_for_Soris+2
I KNOW. it sounds so…. crazy. and unappetizing. But so refreshing, I promise! I first had a persian one in a restaurant that was plain yogurt, lots of mint and seltzer water. It was amazing. I’m just getting off a dreaded run of antibiotics so have been drinking all the cultured probiotic drinks, and have been spiking them with various flavors of sparkling water. Right now my favorite is raspberry kefir + raspberry lime fizzy water. TRY IT and report back.
johnwthompson+1
Ahhh kefir! I’ve had that, but with seltzer??
I HAVE had an egg cream, having spent a cursory amount of time in Harlem, but that hardly counts does it? Interesting and sad story, the egg cream. Back in the early 1900’s choco milkshakes in Manhattan were solely the purview of rich, white children. So everyone else drank egg cream and saw that it was good.
roxythroatpunch+2
Egg cream = Harriet the Spy. I have never had one, in fear that it will disappoint me, as Turkish Delight disappointed me.
Site_for_Soris+1
Turkish Delight is officially the worst. Egg creams are….. good, although easily disappointing, esp. if you really love a richer, thicker milkshake.
hot buttered rum+1
no, Turkish Delight is fantastic! But it is a lot better freshly made from a shop, not from some weird package, that is true…
craftastrophies+1
This is perfect because hot buttered rum is on my list of things that sounds great but I’m too scared to try for fear of being let down by the reality.
Fresh turkish delight is just the best thing.
madgehowlet+1
Oh, this is brilliant. I have a bottle of kefir with which I am bored, and a Sodastream thinger, with which I am in love. And now I will bring them together and my life will be happy!
Congratulations on getting the manuscript together! I have at least three article projects languishing because it is July and how could I possibly think about academic writing right now? I have fizzy yogurt to drink.
missellabell+1
Also, Toasties, I have two questions.
One of them is about gardening, and my chilli plants, and a sad begonia: can I put coffee grinds in their earth? how can I perk them up a bit? They live on a windowsill on a busy road.
The second one is about aubergine (eggplant). What the devil do you do with these fuckers? They are very peculiar so far as I can tell but I bought one on a whim anyway.
roxythroatpunch+2
Oh hey, how’s about I continue to pimp Smitten Kitchen? She has tons of eggplant recipes here, but this one is probably my favorite. (Really, putting anything on pizza automatically makes it my favorite. Let’s just be honest.)
the_lovecats+1
Is your begonia in the sun? That could make it sad. Mine is in the shade and I’m afraid it will never stop growing.
Site_for_Soris+2
begonias can be so tricky because some like full sun and some need shade and some like high humidity and others need to be mostly dry, so mostly all I have to say is, get your shit together, begonias. but it’s worth altering sun regimes , and if the soil always seems wet, i’d let it dry out completely on top before rewatering. mine is always half pretty half ugly and sad, so I know I’m doing at least something right (and something wrong)
missellabell+1
It has been, unusually enough for London. Poor thing. I thought maybe I ought to repot it…?
haleycrain+2
can I just say that I read this and immediately started singing LEMME GO ONNNN LIKE A BEGONIA IN THE SUNNN
is that weird
#violentfemmes
the_lovecats+1
Weird and perfectly awesome. And now I have that song in my head forever.
Site_for_Soris+4
Also, get any and all middle eastern cookbooks (my two faves are Arabesque by Claudia Rodin and Jerusalem by Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi) I like to cut them in half, roast them, and then fill them with ground lamb and pine nuts in a sauce of tomatoes, lemon juice, paprika, cinnamon, cumin and pomegranate molasses. Or also I love a spicy eggplant mint bruschetta, but see SK has that wrapped up, so I second roxythroatpunch on that front.
roxythroatpunch+2
Mmm, eggplant. My husband (who does most of our cooking, I should admit) can’t STAND eggplant. It is one of my great life tragedies.
Site_for_Soris+4
Whenever I hear this I want to take it up as a personal challenge to cook eggplant that people such as your husband would like. Because, let’s face it: eggplant can be disgusting. And it can also be the silkiest, melting, smooth carrier of sophisticated flavors EVER.
loren_smith+1
My husband also can’t stand it, but it is so versatile and great because I don’t eat meat – sometimes I sort of slip it into things and don’t tell him. I’m the worst right?
Site_for_Soris+4
I think you mean The Best
loren_smith+1
Thank you. If he realllly didn’t like it, he wouldn’t eat it at all, right?
amativus+9
TOASTIES!
Toasties is the name now, right? Like Pinners? Toasties is delightful. It sounds like a subversive Girl Scout troop. Which I think is perfectly on point.
missellabell+2
If this happens I will be so proud of myself. Let’s make this happen, I like being smug.
mbculver+3
It also sounds like getting toasted, which sounds nicer than “buzzed” and MUCH nicer than “wasted.”
…speaking of toasted, time for a dark and stormy…
missellabell+5
I don’t know what “toasties” are everywhere else but in England they are a toast sandwich with melted cheese and things in. So many delightful connotations of toast.
catnamedvirtute+1
In Quebec they are a hot dog in a toasted bread bun! If you go to a diner you can get “un toastie” or “un steamie.”
Lindi Wood+2
Bake the eggplant in a hot oven until it is really soft, then once it’s cool, scoop out the insides and blend (or process) those slimey insides with 1/3 cup tahini, and a couple cloves of garlic. A couple squirts of lemon juice and you have a delicious baba ghanouj — like hummous but without chickpeas. You can also slice and broil the eggplant and mix it into a spicy tomato sauce for the best pasta sauce ever — Marcella Hazan’s recipe. I second the Smitten Kitchen advice. Her recipes are awesome.
missellabell+1
That sounds *incredible*. Tomorrow!
Mingus Thurber
Or put it on the grill! Grilled whole eggplant, cooked over a low heat, is really good. You can use it in all sorts of things, like baba ganouj, or just by itself on bread.
phlomis3+1
Were you serious about the coffee grounds? Because they actually make a great soil conditioner, though they add almost nothing in the way of nutrients. And supposedly, free roaming cats don’t like to step on them, though the free roaming cats in my ‘hood don’t seem to fear anything except raccoons.
lyetteann+2
Hey, speaking of cocktails! My husband and I discovered a really good locally-made rum and I’m trying to branch out from just drinking it with pineapple juice or making pina coladas. Anybody got any good rum drinks I could make? Preferably not super sweet?
quinnear+6
You’ve located the most important ingredient; now locate a really good locally-grown lime and also a really good locally-grown sprig of mint. You see where this is going, right?
MOJITOS, GIRL.
Mojitos in the summer and dark rum and cider in the winter are my favorite drinks. Well, and iced peppermint tea. Haven’t ever tried adding rum to that one, but Christ, I’m sure it can be done.
Enjoy!
Mingus_Thurber+3
MOJITOS WHY IS THERE NO THUMBS UP BUTTON MELIS GET ON THIS.
Mingus_Thurber+10
OH WAIT THERE IT IS NEED MORE MOJITOS.
mbculver+2
If it’s dark rum, then definitely a dark and stormy (with Gosling’s ginger beer and plenty of fresh lime, of course). If it’s light rum, then maybe a mojito, easy on the sugar?
Lucienne+1
If it’s light rum, make daiquiris! I know what you are thinking but the good daiquiris don’t require a blender, just rum and lime juice and sugar. Delicious.
msjinxie+2
My favorite bar turned me on to the concept of using rum in place of other boozes in traditional drinks – rum manhattans and rum negronis are FANTASTIC variations on the originals. The rum they usually use for them is Smith & Cross, which is aged and higher proof than usual, and has a funk to it that I love; a more traditional, sweeter rum may not go as well (though it’d certainly be worth a shot!) I could also see a rum Old Fashioned being tasty!
sandwichharlot+1
Uh, well, it’s pretty sweet, but rum + the cream soda of your choice is tasty and fast. Also tasty if you add some vanilla ice cream – boozy cream soda float! I’m sure there’s artisanal cream sodas out there that are less on the syrupy side.
quinnear+9
Fresh start! I love fresh starts, I love July, I love peppermint iced tea, I love my cat, Quinn, and the smell and dual textures of his ears; I love toast, I already love The Toast, and I AM FEELING PRETTY GOOD ABOUT MANY THINGS THESE DAYS.
Hi, everyone! Happy this place exists and happy to be along!

Great cocktail hour! Thanks, Toasties! Or would that be Toastettes?
missellabell+2
I don’t want to be an -ette, unless I can be in a sixties girl group with excellent hair.
loren_smith+1
I have the most adorable cat picture to be my commentator photo, and though I uploaded it to intense debate, and it’s showing under ‘my account’ – ‘pictures’ it is not showing here. Thoughts?
Mingus Thurber+5
Toasties FTW. I also submit Toast Points, writers, for the use of.
My new dog, Mongo, is working out brilliantly. Today I vacuumed him. He got groomed last night, but was still sort of shed-y (Golden Retriever: I’ve never had one, I thought double-coated northern breeds were bad), and he loved it. And I mean stood there with his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth, happily submitting to being vacuumed with the Miele canister. And then I changed the vacuum bag, because ew. Mongo is a year-old rescue of large heart and little brain, but he’s learning. And he’s a fantastic watch-dog.
AND OH MY LORD HOW I LOVE THE TOAST. The Hairpin is great, don’t get me wrong, but my two favorite writers from there are editors here, and it’s just marvelous. Plus, the size is still manageable. It’s nice not to drown in 877 open-thread comments, honestly.
I am so looking forward to Week 2 that I’m going to chance it and log in to the site at work, even though The Powers That Is have decided it’s a questionable site and require additional clearance.
quinnear+5
I just want to type it: today you vacuumed your dog.
Yup. Felt as good as I thought it would.
the_lovecats+1
I just want to proclaim to you my love for the Miele! It is one of the best purchases I have ever made. ever.
My work computer blocked Nicole’s pubic hair piece as “adult material” on day one. Rude.
craftastrophies+2
I am loving the manageability, too! I love that there are few articles per day, but they are long enough to be satisfying. So I don’t feel like I’m missing out if I don’t click on five link articles and read the comments. I can come visit here AND still do my work! (Hypothetically)
estellefirefly+3
Happy first week, ya’ll! I am loving the content so far. Everything has been surprising and delightful (even, in their own way, the sad things)(I cried like a little baby after reading AHP’s piece yesterday.). Also I just saw the Heat, and I highly recommend it! It was very funny and much less fat-shamey than I feared. Also, also yay for the Fourth to be over so people in my city will stop shooting fireworks off on every street corner. I hope everyone is having a good Friday so far.
dianeleighshipley+1
Oh, that’s good to hear, I feared fat shaming tbh. One of the millions of things I love about Gilmore Girls is that McCarthy’s weight was never an issue or a teachable moment or a cause for low self-esteem.
automaticdoor+1
I’m pleased to hear that about The Heat! I thought you were talking about the basketball team for a few moments and I was like, hmmm, I don’t think they’re that funny…?
greyhavens9+5
Also, I like the new comments layout! Much easier to read.
deleted2997279+1
Yes! I love the new comments layout and the font of the page.
johnwthompson+7
And they got rid of the point score display! I was hoping to lord my approval over everyone else but I guess that’s just going to have to wait until I win American Idol or some equivalent showcase
Lucienne+1
What does it say about my eye problems if I found the old layout easier to read? Ophthalmologists?
automaticdoor+1
I have no idea, but I definitely also found the old layout easier to read.
automaticdoor+1
BUT YOU CANNOT PLEASE EVERYONE
Linette+6
Is there going to be cocktail hour several times a week? Because if so, YES, a woman needs a cocktail (and an open thread) more than just on Fridays, y’all.
automaticdoor+2
I think it also keeps the open thread size more manageable–more places for people to vent!
craftastrophies+2
I love this idea. Also it’s good for people from different time zones – one of the reasons I dropped off the pin was because the OT didn’t start till my weekend was already underway, so by the time I saw it it was monday morning and there were 5,000 comments. A Wednesday cocktail hour would be great!

Joining the lovefest. Truly a great first week. Thanks for posting through the holiday. This was the only thing getting me through work. Just have to get through today and then three day weekend!
Being that it’s a heat wave, I’m thinking some white sangria would be awesome. I have white wine and frozen berries and seltzer at home just begging to be imbibed.

You guys, I fully approve of everything here. Much as I love the Hairpin, the comments sections are overwhelming, so I’m being proactive and getting in here on the ground floor. Well, the second or third floor, maybe, because I had to remember my WP login first. But still.
So hi! How are you? How is your weekend? I am doing a lot of nothing, but planning on going to buy a bunch of elastic-waist skirts because I’m very newly pregnant, but since this is my second time around I have exactly no patience for anything that is annoying to wear.
dianeleighshipley+1
Congratulations!! On the pregnancy, but also on getting in on the ground floor, comments-wise 😉

I also find the hp comments overwhelming though I like reading them and have commented a little. Showing my face here!

CHEERS. Congrats, M&N!

This website it totally jazzing up my life. It makes me want to be cleverer, and wittier, and in general more articulate. Oh, and funny. Can I be funny, too? I will certainly keep reading as the weeks pass.
They rejected the concept of French Toast? Rude! (Although I really was awful about things I would and would not eat as a child)
My french toast is always too dry. So maybe french toast advise is in order.
They wouldn’t even TRY it, the little buggers!
this French toast is awesome and one of my favorite SK recipes. (Everyone reads Smitten Kitchen right? Because everyone should.)
AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH this looks SO GOOD. And I have a whole loaf of slightly stale challah bread so this is HAPPENING
Yes, yes this recipe is the BEST.
hmmmmmm. I made it. And it is DELICIOUS. But I am going to say that it’s not really French Toast. It is more like…. cinnamon toast bread pudding. Which is fine by me!! Just…. not french toast.
Also, kids rejecting food you slave over is SO ANNOYING. My 2.5 year old helped me make a flag cake from scratch yesterday and then immediately spit out her first (and only bite), scoffing, “I not like this, Mama.” WELL EXCUSE ME.
RIGHT? “Don’t yike it.” That’s what you said about Play-doh.
Meanwhile, she was harrassing me for a bite when I was creaming the butter. “I want a bite, Mommy! I want a bite, Mommy!” Child. It is BUTTER. Even Paula Deen (probably) doesn’t lick the batter when it’s just straight butter.
G eats salt right out of the box. Our girls are weird.
My cousin used to eat butter right off the stick. Even I, who ate “raw” hot dogs and powdered cake batter as a kid, thought that was gross.
Hah! My sister used to eat dried oatmeal packets, and sometimes “half-wet, half-dry.” Kids are so weird.
My husband eats raw oats for breakfast every morning with nuts and raisins and soy milk. I guess it’s kind of like unprepared muesli? Not my thing, but he’s doing him.
Mmmm, butter bars
There’s a place down the street that has the best French toast ever and I’m too embarrassed to go there Every Single Weekend. But I love it so!
Does this happen to anyone else?
I would offer to write a column for parents or people considering parenthood, but after this week the entire thing would be “Sell them to the circus.”
I want toast recipes but I first need actually decent tasting vegan bread. Maybe vegan bread recipes for people who don’t know how to make bread? Or maybe toasted pita or something. I could go for that.
http://www.theppk.com/2011/12/olive-oil-bread/
Isa is amazing and walks you through it. Such a great First Bread.
Thank you! This looks good. I should have known to look there.
The Toast is amazing so far, though.
YES. I really like it, too. A new place! A chatty lovely new place!
Hurray!!
I love that the comment sections seem to be non-glitchy (so far?).
GOSSIP! In response to Where’s Jane? Jane must either have a very small baby or be near having a small baby, yes?
If you follow her on Instagram you can also stalk her on Instagram.
I jusst miss her, okay?!
I am loving loving loving The Toast and I hope you guys are proud of your work on your end! I want this to be a success and not just because I desperately need more long form pieces to read at work. Also I second the suggestion for more toast/bread/carbohydrate-centered content.
I picked a bad time to cut out gluten.
It’s always a bad time to cut out gluten.
You’re telling me.
I have to say, the King Arthur GF bread mix makes the most real-bread-y GF loaf I have tried. It’s allllllmost like actual sandwich bread.
Sigh. Almost.
Ack, I live in the UK where everything is terrible. But I probably wouldn’t bake my own bread anyway, I have to be honest.
The Toast! You have kept me sane and awake at work this week, and for that I thank you. I cannot wait for more!
Great first week ladies! I’m loving the content so far and looking forward to reading more.
Truth: challah bread makes the best toast. You may think otherwise, but you are wrong.
Preach.
Holla
Happy first week! Thank you for publishing me and MORE IMPORTANTLY some great ladies whose work I plan to read more of. Also, when will the ranking of Mitford Sisters begin or did I miss it? (Spoiler alert: I’m going Nancy first. Yes.)
TBH, the only dilemma is whether to put Nancy or Decca first, isn’t it? And whether to put Diana last or let her be second-to-last because points for gumption/wonderful faces.
Yes! Exactly. Tempted to put Pam last because of boringness.
DEBO FOREVER
xo, goldies
GASP.
HURRAY for you! I love it when people laugh in the right places!
There’s this new website I’ve heard about that you could pitch it to…
No harm in submitting it!
Did you read the story here earlier in the week about line-ups? With the apple pictures? Go for it!
Pitch it pitch it pitch it!!!
Perhaps you could explain a couple things to us Americans in footnotes? Check out the footnotes on the Sarah Pebbletush piece! They’re tops!
or you could just hyperlink to the wikipedia page for those things, so if people are like “WTF is that?” they can just click and find out for themselves.
I’m so glad The Toast’s first week is also a week during which I have very little to do at work so I’ve been able to read everything right away. Everything published this week was so good! More Toast!
Oh, I’m so sorry about your grandmother. Big hugs for all that’s involved in life transitions.
Thanks. The call came last night and sleep helped a lot.
I LOVE YOU GUYS I LOVE THIS SITE I LOVE MY JOB
WE are your job now
We love you too, Mallory. And hopefully not in the way where we ever try to tell you how to run your own site!
WHEN I THINK ABOUT WHERE WE WERE A YEAR AGO AM I SO INFINITELY PROUD OF US. MOSTLY YOU. YOU ARE AWESOME.
Ditto
we love youuuuuuuu
It’s so nice when a thing one likes (such as The Toast) is liked by the people who actually do the work (such as yourself).
I was hanging out with a bunch of awesome lady-people a couple of weeks ago, and the place we were stayed echoed with laughter pretty much the whole time. When there wasn’t laughter, there was generally good companionship. My comment then was, it’s nice to wake up in an actual, non-ironical, House of Mirth.
Companionable, good humored where appropriate. Yes. That.
<3!
Well done! I totally want to do a storytelling show one day, but I know I’d sweat uncontrollably. (I’m not saying this would stop me, but its something to consider.) If you get chocolate and booze, though..
I will, I promise! Am not really in a place to do it, health wise, right now. I actually wonder if I’m in a place to do it location wise, either. But I can at least a. find out, b. write something I could read.
Carbonated yogurt drinks??
Carbonated yogurt drinks…
I KNOW. it sounds so…. crazy. and unappetizing.
Egg cream = Harriet the Spy. I have never had one, in fear that it will disappoint me, as Turkish Delight disappointed me.
Turkish Delight is officially the worst. Egg creams are….. good, although easily disappointing, esp. if you really love a richer, thicker milkshake.
no, Turkish Delight is fantastic! But it is a lot better freshly made from a shop, not from some weird package, that is true…
This is perfect because hot buttered rum is on my list of things that sounds great but I’m too scared to try for fear of being let down by the reality.
Fresh turkish delight is just the best thing.
Oh hey, how’s about I continue to pimp Smitten Kitchen? She has tons of eggplant recipes here, but this one is probably my favorite. (Really, putting anything on pizza automatically makes it my favorite. Let’s just be honest.)
Is your begonia in the sun? That could make it sad. Mine is in the shade and I’m afraid it will never stop growing.
begonias can be so tricky because some like full sun and some need shade and some like high humidity and others need to be mostly dry, so mostly all I have to say is, get your shit together, begonias. but it’s worth altering sun regimes , and if the soil always seems wet, i’d let it dry out completely on top before rewatering. mine is always half pretty half ugly and sad, so I know I’m doing at least something right (and something wrong)
It has been, unusually enough for London. Poor thing. I thought maybe I ought to repot it…?
can I just say that I read this and immediately started singing LEMME GO ONNNN LIKE A BEGONIA IN THE SUNNN
is that weird
#violentfemmes
Weird and perfectly awesome.
And now I have that song in my head forever.
Mmm, eggplant. My husband (who does most of our cooking, I should admit) can’t STAND eggplant. It is one of my great life tragedies.
Whenever I hear this I want to take it up as a personal challenge to cook eggplant that people such as your husband would like. Because, let’s face it: eggplant can be disgusting. And it can also be the silkiest, melting, smooth carrier of sophisticated flavors EVER.
My husband also can’t stand it, but it is so versatile and great because I don’t eat meat – sometimes I sort of slip it into things and don’t tell him. I’m the worst right?
I think you mean The Best
Thank you. If he realllly didn’t like it, he wouldn’t eat it at all, right?
TOASTIES!
Toasties is the name now, right? Like Pinners? Toasties is delightful. It sounds like a subversive Girl Scout troop. Which I think is perfectly on point.
If this happens I will be so proud of myself. Let’s make this happen, I like being smug.
It also sounds like getting toasted, which sounds nicer than “buzzed” and MUCH nicer than “wasted.”
…speaking of toasted, time for a dark and stormy…
I don’t know what “toasties” are everywhere else but in England they are a toast sandwich with melted cheese and things in. So many delightful connotations of toast.
In Quebec they are a hot dog in a toasted bread bun! If you go to a diner you can get “un toastie” or “un steamie.”
That sounds *incredible*. Tomorrow!
Or put it on the grill! Grilled whole eggplant, cooked over a low heat, is really good. You can use it in all sorts of things, like baba ganouj, or just by itself on bread.
Were you serious about the coffee grounds? Because they actually make a great soil conditioner, though they add almost nothing in the way of nutrients. And supposedly, free roaming cats don’t like to step on them, though the free roaming cats in my ‘hood don’t seem to fear anything except raccoons.
Hey, speaking of cocktails! My husband and I discovered a really good locally-made rum and I’m trying to branch out from just drinking it with pineapple juice or making pina coladas. Anybody got any good rum drinks I could make? Preferably not super sweet?
You’ve located the most important ingredient; now locate a really good locally-grown lime and also a really good locally-grown sprig of mint. You see where this is going, right?
MOJITOS, GIRL.
Mojitos in the summer and dark rum and cider in the winter are my favorite drinks. Well, and iced peppermint tea. Haven’t ever tried adding rum to that one, but Christ, I’m sure it can be done.
Enjoy!
MOJITOS WHY IS THERE NO THUMBS UP BUTTON MELIS GET ON THIS.
OH WAIT THERE IT IS NEED MORE MOJITOS.
If it’s dark rum, then definitely a dark and stormy (with Gosling’s ginger beer and plenty of fresh lime, of course). If it’s light rum, then maybe a mojito, easy on the sugar?
If it’s light rum, make daiquiris! I know what you are thinking but the good daiquiris don’t require a blender, just rum and lime juice and sugar. Delicious.
Uh, well, it’s pretty sweet, but rum + the cream soda of your choice is tasty and fast. Also tasty if you add some vanilla ice cream – boozy cream soda float! I’m sure there’s artisanal cream sodas out there that are less on the syrupy side.
Happy this place exists and happy to be along!
yessssssss
Kitty ears! soft little velvety things. Now I’m thinking of petting kitty ears, and I don’t have a kitty, so this makes me a bit sad, so please pet your kitty for me
Great cocktail hour! Thanks, Toasties! Or would that be Toastettes?
I don’t want to be an -ette, unless I can be in a sixties girl group with excellent hair.
I have the most adorable cat picture to be my commentator photo, and though I uploaded it to intense debate, and it’s showing under ‘my account’ – ‘pictures’ it is not showing here. Thoughts?
I just want to type it: today you vacuumed your dog.
Yup. Felt as good as I thought it would.
I just want to proclaim to you my love for the Miele! It is one of the best purchases I have ever made. ever.
Yup, I’m just going to assume this was your day:
http://youtu.be/y9y22VID_3w
My work computer blocked Nicole’s pubic hair piece as “adult material” on day one. Rude.
I am loving the manageability, too! I love that there are few articles per day, but they are long enough to be satisfying. So I don’t feel like I’m missing out if I don’t click on five link articles and read the comments. I can come visit here AND still do my work! (Hypothetically)
Oh, that’s good to hear, I feared fat shaming tbh. One of the millions of things I love about Gilmore Girls is that McCarthy’s weight was never an issue or a teachable moment or a cause for low self-esteem.
I’m pleased to hear that about The Heat! I thought you were talking about the basketball team for a few moments and I was like, hmmm, I don’t think they’re that funny…?
Also, I like the new comments layout! Much easier to read.
Yes! I love the new comments layout and the font of the page.
And they got rid of the point score display! I was hoping to lord my approval over everyone else but I guess that’s just going to have to wait until I win American Idol or some equivalent showcase
What does it say about my eye problems if I found the old layout easier to read? Ophthalmologists?
I have no idea, but I definitely also found the old layout easier to read.
BUT YOU CANNOT PLEASE EVERYONE
Is there going to be cocktail hour several times a week? Because if so, YES, a woman needs a cocktail (and an open thread) more than just on Fridays, y’all.
I think it also keeps the open thread size more manageable–more places for people to vent!
I love this idea. Also it’s good for people from different time zones – one of the reasons I dropped off the pin was because the OT didn’t start till my weekend was already underway, so by the time I saw it it was monday morning and there were 5,000 comments. A Wednesday cocktail hour would be great!
At the Beyonce concert! 2 minutes to go! Drinking tequila amaretto orange juice!!!
Man, you are clearly doing everything right with your life.
I am loving it here! I haven’t commented on anything yet, but I’ve been enjoying it immensely and recommending it to people.
I’ve been thrilled to find this space for writing. Excellent! Looking forward to more…
I really really am loving this, from silly Austen inserts to AHP’s essay which was amazing. Just amazing. I really, really want to submit something, I just don’t know what yet.
Loving the toast ladies! Can’t wait for next week for more!!
Y’all are doing it right. Please continue to be awesome. <3
Congratulations!! On the pregnancy, but also on getting in on the ground floor, comments-wise 😉
I also find the hp comments overwhelming though I like reading them and have commented a little. Showing my face here!
As a person who has a tattoo of A Wizard Has Stolen Your Heart! on my arm, I don’t think I could be more thrilled about a new site co-founded by Mallory.
Please keep up the amazing work, I’ve loved all of it so far.
WHAT
DUDE
PICTURES PLEASE
I sent pictures to the Contact email address, I’m on my iPad at work and I don’t know how to make pictures appear in comments. I hope you like them!
It’s real people, the tattoo is real, oh mah gah it’s real and it’s GREAT
WhATAT? Is it text? CAN YOU POST IT?
It’s on Mallory’s Twitter! @mallelis
Congratulations on a wonderful first week! Tasty toasty toast.
Congratulations on a wonderful wonderful amazing new website, ladies! I am so excited to see where this goes! I have been reccing it to … well, not everyone I know, just the cool people. So. We shall see how THAT goes.
PS NO THEY DON’T KNOW WHO I AM COMMENT-NAME-WISE SHHHH DON’T TELL THEM
Oh man, several of my irl vague acquaintances posted links to facebook and I almost died. I really hope they don’t work it out and/or are already secretly one of you awesome people because I know you’re all cool.
