The Toast is hiring an intern! Did you miss the early summer rush? Now is your chance to become one for the next three months. Goths and non-Goths are encouraged to apply.
Some qualities we would like in our (goth???) intern:
- Experience with site metric work and Google ad exchange
- Knowledge of HTML and CSS
- WordPress experience, particularly customizing and troubleshooting WordPress themes and plugins
- “Angry” rather than “mopey” goth (if you are a goth)
Some things we will ask of you:
- 5-10 hours of work a week. Mostly “tech stuff” but with some contract processing and comment moderating, just to keep you on your toes.
Some things we will offer you:
- Money (not lots. But some money.)
- Course credit, if you want it, although a degree or enrollment in higher education are not requirements.
Other things of note:
You can work from anywhere in the country. You do not have to live in New York! This is true for many things, not just internships.
Interested parties would do well to send a CV and a friendly note to [email protected]. We will be looking at applications through end of day August 9th (Pacific Standard Time [see? You really don’t have to live in New York, although we certainly won’t stop you if you’re set on it]).

I’m really looking forward to the employment discrimination suit on this one.
You should have stuck to an area where you have precedent on your side at least. Hire a babe!
I resemble that remark.
PLEASE pay whoever it is at least minimum wage. They’re not interning. They’re bringing you a desperately needed skill set. New York law is really clear on this one. As many are finding out to their chagrin. Pay min wage now – or pay triple later plus penalties.
pretty sure the toast is way more on top of actually paying people than are most internet writing websites, let’s give a little credit here
Oh yes the toast is a website that pays contributors
Like you contribute and they actually give you money
real money
and while it’s not a fortune it’s also not insultingly little
actual money
money
Good heavens, did I hit some kind of nerve? New York employment law is EXCRUCIATINGLY clear on what constitutes employment and what an intern is. This sounds like employment. You know all those cases in the news? There are more coming and there are more coming aimed specifically at a big blog I’m not going to name. Unless you’re creating an atmosphere where your “intern” is learning something – not weak stuff about learning how to get to work in the morning or whatever, but actually learning stuff, they don’t qualify as an intern. Which makes The Toast an easy target for a lawsuit. Which is BAD and involves lawyers.
So you can just climb down off Mount Self-Righteous and – how on earth is the fact that another field ALSO exploits workers relevant? Honestly. If Mallory and Nicole need your help defending their enterprise, I’m sure they will ask.
Paying writers is…wtf does that have to do with it? This is about interns and exposing oneself to a lawsuit. Cripes.
I think people just mentioned it because the toast has a history of (and has expressed a commitment to) paying their contributors and employees, both on the toast and in interviews with other websites (the billfold, scratch magazine) so people might be surprised that someone might think that their intern wouldn’t be paid or would be underpaid.
It’s great that you pointed it out because I think we’d all like to see this intern paid a fair wage but I can also understand why people would be surprised that it needed to be mentioned on a website like the toast.
I don’t want to be too quick to judge, but…It does kind of sound like a job, doesn’t it? :/
they are paying this imaginary goth! it is 5-10 hours of work a week! they actually PAY THEIR WRITERS in my understanding, unlike just about every other website of this internet level that you read probably!!!! geez
ok I am officially bowing out of this argument about internships now, as a person who also thinks internships in general are usually terrible, and a person who semi-belongs to a field that practically survives on unpaid labor that is not even journalism (hi, archives)
It’s a paid internship. Unless the angry goth doesn’t believe in money, of course.
Then, instead of money, we would pay them in Marilyn Manson concert stubs from the 1990s.
Which really means paying in street cred and obsession relief. (I mean about the stubs… although being a The Toast intern would also bring street cred.)
I’m happy to see they’re paying AT ALL, but that said, I agree.
Allow me to assure you as the Publisher of this little site that we are going to comply with all labor laws to the letter. We are committed to paying people for work. We are also committed to education around here, hence the “intern” part. I hope this addresses you concerns and thank you for participating in the site.
Thank you for that – yes, it does. I don’t want to see you all hurt financially.
“Must be able to succesfully manage ‘evil melis’ commenter accounts across multiple platforms.”
Also, as a reader, I would not complain if this intern spent time photoshopping various hats onto Nicole’s cute baby and subsequently posting those photos.
WISH I KNEW MORE TECH STUFF. I would so be on top of this. 🙁
Wait, wasn’t @icebergmama just saying that she was a coder who needed some part time work? Did I hallucinate that? ICEBERGY! WHERE ARE YOU?
Noooo I am not a coder! I do print design mostly. I wouldn’t represent myself as someone who knows what they’re doing with web design. Business cards or ads on the other hand… 🙂 thanks for the shout out tho!
This is not the first time I wished I were a teen goth.
Back when I dyed my hair black, I considered myself more of a "death rocker" than a "goth." You know, The Damned, 45 Grave, that kind of stuff. I sort of know HTML and CSS and I could probably pick that other stuff up pretty quickly.
You'd be cool with laying out the site entirely with TABLE tags, right?

Found this post while digging for an old post. Are they still hiring interns?
