“A Good Attitude Towards Menstruation,” Kids in the Hall

How better to start Commonwealth Day than with the greatest Canadian sketch comedy troupe of ours or (prove me wrong!) any age?

Personally, I have a pretty shitty attitude towards menstruation, but Dave Foley has never steered me wrong before.

When i was an UNRULY TEEN, my mom surprised me with KITH LIVE tickets and we went together and i think that’s when i finally ditched the parental angst.

I also second that the series holds up CRAZILY well.

I also saw KITH LIVE and I can tell you the roar of the crowd as they took the stage rivaled that of any hair metal band ever. They did Chicken Lady and I died.

I can’t believe I never saw KITH until my husband showed me. And by “showed me” I mean “incessantly quoted Brain Candy until I finally saw it enough times to catch the references”, though the Doors sketch and the Girl Drink Drunk are both standard references in our day-to-day repetoire now.

(PS: Hey Foley, it’s not herbal tea and Pamprin, it’s red wine and chocolate. Unless by herbal tea and pamprin you mean bong hits and vicodin.)

I have no idea what Kevin McDonald said. Diction, man!
I love KITH, though. And they did some of the best, least offensive drag ever (with a couple of consistent exceptions among the cast members). Dave Foley made a fantastically good woman.

THERE ya go. Thanks! Dave was the prettiest, whether as a secretary or the French-Canadian prostitute, but Scott’s Francesca Fiore was the most stylish. “I love your wolverine. Only one who keel for pleasure!” All their drag characters were characters first and foremost; the joke was never just about the clothes. Bless their hearts.

I do not know if you are joking, but Mallory and I literally decided we were going to do that.

Every time my best friend and I see each other, we share KITH rankings, because while our #1 spots never shift, the other four tend to move around based on how things are going in our lives: significant life transitions, the changing of the seasons, etc. I’ll give my current one below in case anyone else wants to share rankings (it tells me everything about you as a person, so be warned). But obviously I love them all.

    1. Mark
    2. Kevin
    3. Bruce
    4. Scott
    5. Dave

      1. Bruce
      2. Mark
      3. Kevin
      4. Scott
      5. Dave

Scott can occasionally creep up above Kevin, depending on the episode that is freshest in my mind, but Bruce consistently delivers my favorite lines expertly.

I’m willing to quibble about exact placement, but GENERALLY this is correct:

          1. Scott
          2. Dave
          3. Mark
          4. Bruce
          5. Kevin (SORRY NOT SORRY KEVIN BUT BEING THE WORST KITH IS BETTER THAN BEING THE BEST ANYTHING ELSE)

          1. Lu2 +2

I agree with your (Mallory’s) rankings except for the top two.

            1. Dave
            2. Scott
            3. Mark

            4. Bruce
            5. Kevin

the space in between is deliberate. Them two rub me the wrong way, sorry.

          2. thezlot +2

HAHAHAHAH my best friend’s forever favorite is Kevin. To be fair, I think this is very close to being Kevin McDonald’s ranking as well, if you switch Dave into first place. The poor lamb.

My first relationship in high school began because we heard each other quoting KITH on the band bus. THE 1990S, FOLKS

oh my goddddd this is so hard and impossible

    1. Mark
    2. Dave
    3. Kevin
    4. Scott
    5. Bruce

Kevin performed at a comedy festival in Boston I volunteered at last month and he is amazing and kind and adorable.

I’m crushing your head, crush crush crush. Ah, memories. I also saw KITH live; as other posters commented, the audience was mouthing every word of every sketch along with the guys. True rock stars.

Canadian comedy, I bow to thee. (But I think SCTV may be the greatest Canadian sketch comedy troupe … Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, John Candy, Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis, Andrea Martin. Just typing these names makes me laugh.)

  8. johnwthompson +2

A better Canadian sketch troupe? How about, oh I don’t know, any of them. But ESPECIALLY Second City. There’s more talent in John Candy’s snake face tattoo than the entire KITH roster combined.

Also many of them are terrible people, but this being comedy I guess we can’t hold it against them in particular.

update: Mallory staged an intervention and I am now ambivalent toward KITH in a modestly warm-ish way.

      1. Lu2 +4

I know what you mean, even though at one time he was my future husband (unknown to him). He was once one of the funniest and most adorable people ever, but, unfortunately, the line between performance and shtick became blurred for him–the line between charm and self-indulgence. Between comic mania and just plain obnoxious. But the man just needs to be told “No” sometimes, and all will be well again, I believe. I have a theory that you can only go for so long doing shticky take-offs before you yourself become a real-life Jackie Rogers Junior.

        1. Lu2 +2

Thank you for sticking up for Martin. He is a lovely man who, again, just needs to be told to rein it in as a performer sometimes.

          1. Lu2 +3

Look at him in his jammies!
A friend of mine works in a hotel, and he was staying there with Steve Martin one time, and he called down to the front desk to make a dinner reservation for “comedy legend Steve Martin”. It just seemed so cute and typical.

IS IT made out of blood vessels!?

Also: not directly KitH related, but kind of, but everyone watch Slings & Arrows, a national Canadian treasure. WHY DID I NOT PITCH A STORY FOR THIS DAY ABOUT THE BEST CANADIAN TV SHOWS WHY.

First things first: does anyone know what the piece of music that accompanied M. Piedlourde sketches was called?

I once dated a dude who was Made Very Uncomfortable by my admiration of Brucio’s legs. He also once made me watch Fear Factor. So, I got rid of him.

Anyway, KitH forever. I think Bruce is my favorite on his own, but Dave and Kevin are my favorite pair–Simon and Hecubus, the Sizzler Sisters, the French trappers, the Nobody Likes Us guys.

In closing, I don’t have the power because I have the monkeys. I have the power because I’ll let the monkeys loose.

Late to the party but can’t believe the negativity towards Kevin! I think it took me a while to get him, but he’s now my 2nd favourie kid (and my number 1 in drag, Sorry Dave!).
B/c I love orders, mine is
    Bruce
    Kevin
    Mark/Scott
    Dave

I think I read that the Mr. Piedlourde song was just from a CBC audio library
