this is just to say
i have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
but when i opened it again later
the plums were back
as if they had never left
only this time
they were
glowing slightly

this is just to say
i have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
they hummed as i bit them
but i could not stop
forgive me
i felt so strange
i feel strange now

this is just to say
i have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and i cannot get
the juice off of my lips
i cannot wipe it off
what were the plums for
what were you saving them for
i cannot clean it off

i have buried
the plums
that were in
the icebox
i have buried them
i have buried them
i can hear the ground humming
the icebox is not empty
the house is humming too
forgive me
please forgive me

this is just to say
please don’t worry about the plums
that were in
the icebox
they were normal
everything was normal about them
when you get home
you’ll see
that i am normal too
i have saved you the plums
that were in
the icebox
there are plenty
for you to eat too
