Things I Have Yelled At My Television, Which Cannot Hear Me, While Watching “Miss Fisher’s Mysteries” During My Convalescence

“STOP MAKING ME CARE SO MUCH ABOUT HETEROSEXUALITY, JACK”

“MAKE TWO MOUTHS WITH YOUR ONE MOUTH”

“BERT AND CEC I FEEL LIKE YOUR COMMUNIST IDEALS ARE BEING SLOWLY WORN AWAY BY THE GLAMOROUS WARDROBE AND BENEVOLENT CAPITALISM OF PHRYNE FISHER, PLEASE DON’T FEEL SO BAD ABOUT IT THOUGH, COMPROMISE IS SORT OF LIKE GETTING USED TO A HOT BATH AND AFTER A WHILE IT FEELS COMFORTABLE, LIKE YOU COULD DO THIS UNTIL YOU DIED”

“Phryne I miss eating solids”

“HURRAH FOR LESBIANS”

“PHRYNE that gown looks beautiful on you but is also indicative of a design era influenced heavily by Orientalism!”

“IT’S THE LESBIAN DOCTOR AGAIN, HOORAY”

“THIS IS SURPRISINGLY PRO-SEX WORKERS, I KNOW YOU CAN’T HEAR ME BUT THANK YOU”

“PHRYNE I HOPE YOU GET TO SLEEP WITH THAT GUY LATER”

“THIS COUPLE HAS WEIRD AND KIND OF INSISTENT THREESOMES AND I HOPE YOU DON’T SLEEP WITH THEM PHRYNE”

“PHRYNE THAT HAT”

“PHRYNE THOSE SHOES”

“JACK YOUR FACE IS AN OCTAGON OF CHEEKBONES AND SORROW”

“I know this plotline is just going to be ‘Hugh says something well-meaning but outdated about women and Dot will get a huffy look on her face and do something small but empowering and then Hugh will do Confused Eyes and then they’ll chastely hug’ but GODDAMNIT IF I’M NOT ALREADY CHARMED BY IT”

“I NEVER KNOW WHO THE MURDERER IS, I CAN NEVER SOLVE RIDDLES OR GUESS WHO THE MURDERER IS IN A MURDER MYSTERY AND IT MAKES ME FEEL MENTALLY INADEQUATE BUT I STILL LOVE YOU, PHRYNE”

“I DON’T KNOW WHAT THAT WORD MEANS BUT I STILL LIKE AUSTRALIA”

“STOP SOLVING CRIMES AND TAKE YOUR HATS OFF AND KISSSSSSSSSSSSS”

“I WISH I HAD IMMENSE WEALTH AND A HOUSE FULL OF PILLARS AND TEA”

“I DON’T CARE IF YOU MAKE OUT WITH OTHER PEOPLE JUST MAKE OUT WITH HIM ONCE FOR ME I WOULD FIND IT DEEPLY MEANINGFUL”

“MAC I LOVE YOUR VEST”

“I THINK I NEED SUBTITLES AGAIN”

“THAT’S THE MUSIC THEY ALWAYS PLAY WHEN JACK IS COMICALLY FRUSTRATED WITH PHRYNE, I LIKE THIS MUSIC”

I AM BASICALLY REDUCED TO YELLING ABOUT HOW JACK AND PHRYNE SHOULD JOIN MOUTHS IN THIS SHOW AND ALSO NOW I NEED A PAIR OF T-STRAP SHOES

    1. Thujaplicata +29

I need all of the clothes on the show, but I am also way too curvy for said clothes to look good. I’ll just take all of the accessories instead.

  2. lemontx +189

JACK PLEASE SPEAK TO ME IN YOUR DEEP VOICE SOME MORE
    JACK PLEASE ELUCIDATE MORE
    JACK PLEASE KISS PHRYNE

    1. Nikki +82

Julia Wong and I also started a wishful-thinking list of all the times Phryne and Jack totally had off-screen sex

      1) after they sing “Let’s Misbehave”
      2) after they waltz at that hotel
      3) after they stargaze and trip over a corpse
      4) after he asked her to please get off his desk
      5) after every single final scene that ends with them smoldering at one another over cocktails

      1. lemontx +35

        6) after every time they get uncomfortably close to each other and then Hugh or Mr. B interrupts

        1. nicolescchung +42

          6) after every time they exchange quiet knowing words about Dot and Hugh’s relationship

          1. Unreadaethel +70

            7) after every time Jack murmers “Miss Fisher” while they share personal space

      2. Julia Lambert +68

At this point, I am so wound up with sexual fire over these two smoldering at each other that I’ve taken to hollering at the end of each episode, “they’ve been doing it this whole time; right after if fades to black they DO IT; we just never see; they’re just banging each other’s faces of; it’s the hottest sex the world has ever known and it’s been their sneaky secret this whole time.” My roommates are both delighted and annoyed by this.

    2. bookwormV +66

I am a hopeless shipper, and putty in the hands of writers/producers trying to manipulate me to feel things. Consequently, I spend every episode writhing in agony when Jack and Phryne once again fail to kiss. (They get together for cocktails whenever they solve a case! They sit by the fire, with nobody there to chaperone them, and flirt constantly! THIS IS NOT A PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP, JACK, JUST KISS HER.)

    3. ofTrebond +45

The “actually, it was a romantic overture” line just carves me up inside every time I think about it, which is often.

  3. lemontx +106

My counterpart and partner, who loves Hugh, is usually shouting something along the lines of “YEAH HUGH GO BE BADASS AGAIN” which I find charming because I think Huge is about 20% badass 80% ineffectual (but in a GOOD WAY, you know??)

    1. drashizu +20

      [season 3 spoilers sort of]
When he was gone and Constable Martin was there for 2 or 3 whole episodes I dieddddd

        1. writingortyping +15

I called him “Constable Ninny Martin,” or “Genderswapped Single White Female.”

    2. bookwormV +64

My partner and I mock Hugh good-naturedly but incessantly, my preferred phrase being, “No, Constable Collins can’t solve this murder. Constable Collins couldn’t find his arse with both hands”. (He was surprisingly attractive in the boxing episode, though!)

(Partner loves Dot best, and shouts encouraging things at the screen when she does stuff.)

    3. filledelagrammaire +153

My friend’s entire household refers to Hugh as Constable Puppy, which I think is 100% accurate.

      1. lemontx +77

YES he IS!! Those eyes! He is adorable and has so much to learn, like how to properly inspect a crime scene, and also not to pee indoors when he gets too excited

        1. two_ogres +16

the ep where dot goes undercover in the factory and when he sees her he just…breaks? like “dot — martha. dot — martha. NOPE I STILL DON’T UNDERSTAND”

      2. writingortyping +116

I have been known to refer to Dot and Hugh as “the basket of kittens.” I have also been known to holler, “KITTENS COMMA BASKET OF” to an empty and uncaring household when they were particularly adorable.

      3. greyduck72 +9

Your percentage figure may need more zeros.

I don’t care if it doesn’t make mathematical sense. I’m still right.

      1. lemontx +13

You’re right. he WAS. I actually just rewatched it and oh man, the gentleman’s underwear /boxing scene *yes*

    4. imeldaevans +4

But it makes his badassery so much more badass, yes? We love Hugh in this house, especially when he is being all manly and confused but still adorable about Dot’s feminism.

  4. alliana07 +89

Yesssss to all of this, haha. YESSSS.

My mom likes to tell me about how Phryne’s outfits are so loved that in between filming, they go on tour, and you can go see all her clothes/shoes/etc.

    1. phlippin +15

What this is amazing!! Has the show’s costume designer become a national celebrity, like Janie Bryant from Mad Men? If not, can I employ him/her to come and be my personal stylist??

        1. aqueousmedium +6

Oh, man, I’m going to Australia in December but Perth not Melbourne. Maybe I need to book a side trip.

          1. AnnaElizabeth +14

it just closed I’m so sorry! I live in Melbourne and have performed (as a swing dancer) at some of the special events for the costume exhibition but have never got around to actually seeing the clothes (except on the TV).

The designers aren’t household names but pretty well known I think in the tiny tiny world of Australian costume design. I’ve seen them talk at an event and they appear to enjoy their jobs immensely.

      1. steadygoing +10

Will the costumes be coming to the US??? I keep googling “phryne fisher cloche” and finding the same blog post from like 2011.

    2. Sass +16

Before the show even started, the ABC sent her season 1 costumes out to be displayed in the windows of bookstores. A lovely wardrobe manager came out with a manikin and the most gorgeous black feathered dress I’ve ever seen, and gave us a bunch of dire warnings about even thinking about touching the costume, then came back to collect it a few weeks later. It was awesome.

    3. tucksabroad +2

True story! I went to see the exhibit at Ripponlea House (Melbourne) the other week. They are gorgeous, eh?

  5. steadygoing +380

FUN FACT the actor who plays Jack was on Lance Armstrong’s team but LEFT because he REFUSED to dope. (In the beach episode you can see them cyclist’s thighs.)

      1. steadygoing +85

he’s so morally upright and also smokin’ hot! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Page

“It was an era that was plagued by drugs and it was very hard to see your way through to a long career… because I stayed clean, you could beat them some of the time, but not all of the time.”

        I swoon.

        1. dakimel +63

I’m so charmed by him that I’m even charmed to see thanks to your link that his sons – not his DOGS but his SONS – are named “Duke” and “Frankie”

    1. Ethylbenzene +140

AND a fun fact — when Phryne asks him if he had any dreams as a kid, he said to ride in the Tour de France. <3 <3 <3 <3

Also that man and his voice and his HANDS oh my god.

      1. frewfish +30

Yes! Yes!!! And how about that time they’re undercover at the radio station, and he’s reading the commercials? So meta 😉

        His voice, I die.

  6. bookwormV +159

Whenever Jack and Phryne share an overly-intimate moment despite steadfastly refusing to actually get together, my partner and I clutch at each other and shriek at the screen. WHY ARE YOU PUTTING YOUR SCARF ROUND HER NECK AND STARING DEEPLY INTO HER EYES, JACK? ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL US?

    1. Unreadaethel +20

And this is why fanfic exists, because all of the fade-to-black sex scenes exist for us on AO3.

        1. Unreadaethel +8

I don’t, unfortunately. I’m terrible at remembering titles. I just search “phryne/jack,” and I’ve gotten fairly good at figuring out within a couple of paragraphs if I need to hit the back button or not.

          1. Palewisconsinite +10

I enjoy her writing. I especially appreciate actual proper sentence construction and grammar. I can’t tell you how many promising stories I’ve had to click away from because they were seemingly written by an eighth grader.

          2. Thujaplicata +7

I also have this trouble with a lot of fanfic. Such great ideas so poorly written! I always hope those writers do a lot more reading, practice writing a lot more, and then write even better stories.

        2. NOWKISSSSS +1

I don’t have a link to hand but there’s an excellent AU doc where Phryne is a thief called the Bower Bird that Jack is trying to catch. Oh, the flirting.

          1. hisdearladydisdain +1

Oh, man, that one is fantastic!!! I think it’s called Fighting Vainly the Old Ennui. Jack and Mac become drinking buddies and it’s awesome. It was first if you sort by kudos on AO3 last I checked. Not that I’m on there often or anything…

There are a lot of really good MFMM authors on AO3 who deserve to be read, but I definitely highly recommend anything by Sassasam. Sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes (usually) really hot, but always beautifully written.

  7. ToastiewithCheese +67

THIS THREAD IS THE BEST ALSO JACK’S VOICE MAKES ME WEAK IN THE KNEES. HE SMOLDERS SO WELL TOO.

  8. delphinedryden +102

During every single episode of this show at some point I yell at the screen, THIS IS EXACTLY WHY FAN FICTION WAS INVENTED.

  9. daisymerolling +35

I want a Miss Fisher prequel with Emily Browning from A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Also, Mac was my inspiration for my Viola costume in my 20s-set 12th Night we did senior year. And Phryne was Olivia’s. MAN that show is so good but (spoilers) breaking up Hugh and Dottie was TOTALLY unnecessary no. darn arc-y drama we know is going to resolve itself.

    1. Thujaplicata +13

Mac is the best and I adore her and her wonderful cynical intelligence and caring.

    2. adoptraya +13

I FEEL LIKE THOUGH…sometimes they dye her hair too red?

And it makes me really sad, because I find her so attractive. As such, the episodes where it looks like they used red Koolaid to dye her hair fill my heart with sadness.

  10. helenin +198

My emotional balls are never bluer than when with each successive episode Phryne and Jack fail to touch mouths and I will raze Australia to the ground if there is no fourth series.

        1. Tikabelle +53

IF I HAD A BOW I WOULD RAISE IT but since ALAS I do not, I will sign an online petition supporting the razing of Australia.

          1. sevanetta +3

Don’t raze us, (1) I live here (2) trust me we will be rioting if this show doesn’t continue forever either. We got 3rd season A Place to Call Home, it’s not nearly as popular as Miss Fisher. I take heart from Veronica Mars movie and Gilmore Girls mini series!!!!

    1. PoissonChalice +4

      I volunteer for this mission!

My obsession for thia show is the manifestation of my mid life crisis.

    2. Char +4

This is probably the most accurate and hilarious thing I’ve ever read online.. I hadn’t realized I had emotional balls, but now that you’ve pointed it out, there really is no other explanation for this agonizing sensation. And I’m happy to partake in the razing of Australia should it become necessary.

  11. Ethylbenzene +65

Jack’s hands get me so much and I can’t tell if it’s better or worse when he wears gloves, good gods.

    1. oneclockworklemon +19

IT’S WORSE WITH GLOVES. He’s got a pair of hands I’d like to have lain on me.

  12. steadygoing +37

Also, Hugo Johnstone-Burt (who plays Hugh, which is NOT AT ALL CONFUSING) is DELIGHTFUL as the befuddled would-be rescuer in SAN ANDREAS starring Dwayne The Rock Johnson.

      1. steadygoing +10

That part where his younger brother is like “Let’s go with the girl who knows what the fuck she’s doing, Hugo Johnstone-Burt” was the best thing to ever happen to disaster movies

  13. muttershanks +28

I love this show so much? And this sounds pretty much exactly like me yelling at my TV and texting my friend who also watches the show going “WHAT DID THEY JUST DO/WHY AREN’T THEY KISSING/WHY IS JACK SO THE WAY HE HIS”

  14. thewhelk +130

Bert and Cec are like, supposed to be read as a couple right? Cause it seems like that was planned and they chickened out halfway through — there’s that wife we see once who wants to move to Farming Place and Bert and Cec talk about thier …cab company and how much thier …cab company means to them and you can’t just …start a cab company in Farming Place .

It was weird, is what I’m saying. And I want more gays irking class communists on my screen please, someone do an Edward Carptienrer biopic.

    1. beakbreath +19

I get really confused whenever one of them has a Female Love Interest, like that week when one of them was trying to marry a Russian girl?

      1. zandilar +18

In the books, I think it’s Cec has a female fiancée after the first book. (It’s the lady who survives the abortion in the very first episode (Alice?))… So no. It was never intended. Unless they were switching things up for the show. *shrugs*

(People do realise that this series started off as books? The first book in the series is Cocaine Blues.)

        1. bookwormV +6

Same in the programme (at least, Cec referred to Alice as his fiancée, but I don’t think she’s appeared in more than one or two episodes).

    2. photondancer +15

They’re mates. Australia is notorious for men being closer to their mates than to their wives. It’s more homoromantic than homosexual.

  15. Honeybunchoats +84

I’m usually really good at spotting the killer, but most of the time, the mysteries on this show don’t make all that much sense? But I don’t care because that’s not why I’m watching. (I’m watching for clothes and sexual chemistry, if that wasn’t obvious.)

    1. Ethylbenzene +29

Yeah I kind of feel that way about this show and also Poirot, although Poirot has much less sexual chemistry but an equal amount of outfit/furniture period porn.

    2. dakimel +45

They could be the easiest mysteries in the world to solve, but I would never get them, because I am too busy having my pants charmed off to notice actual clues.

  16. Ethylbenzene +19

But for real I love this show, and want only the best things for all the characters, even dipshitty Constable Martin, because he seems like he could really learn not to be such a Nice Guy someday.

    1. Thujaplicata +30

In my head, he gets transferred to a small town police station and pays for his drinks with stories of his days in the big city of Melbourne. The guys all love it, and the inn/bar owner’s daughter rolls her eyes at him. He slowly realizes that he’s impressed by her competency at basically running the whole place and then some unknown person from out of town dies at the inn and he has to try and solve the mystery and she basically carries the day and Constable Martin remembers Dot and his lessons there and thanks her for her invaluable help and then they smooch.

Miss Fisher: Making Me Care About Heterosexuality in Shows Again Since Earlier This Year

  18. lauralizabethm +186

Jack truly is the saddest of sad pandas. In every scene, he looks like he’s five seconds away from just lying down on the floor and refusing to get up.

    1. Ethylbenzene +61

THAT LAST GIF THOUGH, every time I see it or watch that episode, Jack’s reaction just KILLS ME and ALSO — is it me or is he nonplussed because they have been sleeping together this whole time and it’s nothing he hasn’t seen before?!?!?!?!

  19. Es_Petal +15

I deliberately don’t even think about whodunnit because I like to enjoy TV and books and part of that is just letting them take me where they will. And I can’t wait for season 3 to hit the UK!!

    1. jimmyjimjimjim +5

If it is a good program it will tell me everything I need to know eventually. Usually twice plus the original occurrence. Just roll with the punches that’s my philosophy. There is no such thing as a confusing movie if you don’t try to figure it out ahead of time.

  20. happyharbingers +121

I have definitely shouted STRAIGHTBAITING at my laptop several times an episode.

  21. cosmia +55

I have never watched this show but I think I should just so I can see Essie Davis happy and stylish and not tormented by an evil spirit conjured by a terrifying children’s book that that may or may not be a manifestation of her guilt and frustration

    1. BellaG +8

I watched that movie, and then performed a mental exorcism of it by rewatching Miss Fisher episodes. (That said, she was excellent in that movie, and the first, less-creepy iteration of the children’s book was something that, with a non-IMMAKILLYOU ending, would actually make a very cool children’s book.)

    2. CULater +1

THAT MOVIE TERRIFIES ME! (Didn’t know it was Essie when I watched it, though, I didn’t recognize her.)

  22. KatPruska +41

Oh, man, I am HERE for this conversation. Except I’m not, because I need to eat this bowl of roasted broccoli and take the dogs out and then go figure out where to park at the elementary school to go pick up my friend’s delightful five year-old child before we are park-bound, but yes. YES YES YES I sat through the entire third season yelling at the screen to “Just make-out already!!!” I have always had a thing for male forearms, and damn, does this show bring them.

I may have watched that restaurant scene from the Montparnasse episode a few hundred times. Ahem.

    1. Tuckedupinbed +9

YES YES YES!!! Me too. The entire third season. Does this mean I’m not the only one-who-has-completely-lost-my-mind about this show? So unlike me…this behavior.
I now read Archive of Our Own fanfic obsessively. But we need a season 4, or a movie, before these actors get away.

  23. GashlycrumbGwen +15

I have nothing new to add to this comment section, I just wanted to chime in with a “YASSSS!”

  24. Helen_Damnation +7

Is the threesomes couple in season three which I do not currently have access to? The rest are pretty pan-season. Phryne’s cousin and his fiance are probably not who you mean. …They were unpleasant.

    1. Ethylbenzene +7

Yes I think so, or it could be Phryne’s cousin and his ADORABLE and also TERRIBLE fiancee? From the costume party?

    2. bookwormV +9

There were children at that party! (Also, his relatives.) Why was he offering the chance to take part in a threesome as a prize?

  25. ppyajunebug +24

I have never seen this show and I’m starting to feel a little bit bad about it. Maybe I should watch?

    1. Harahel +9

I think you’d really like it! Beyond the amazing chemistry, all the main characters are supportive of each other and everything is very charming without veering into the absurd.

    2. greyduck72 +16

It’s the period piece murder detective snarky-hero-beds-all-the-girls but-genderswap-that-trope unabashedly-adorable-and-sassy Australian television show you didn’t know you needed in your life.

    3. evsarah +3

Did I not tell you to watch it as soon as I marathoned the first two seasons in one weekend? Because if I didn’t, that seems unlike me.

    4. Wallie Ollie +4

I am so mad that there’s a post about this show because I needed to get stuff done this weekend, and now I’ll just be binge watching this show AGAIN.

The mysteries themselves are sometimes not so great actually, and some of the situations or actions of the characters are straight up ridiculous even for a TV mystery. I have rolled my eyes and shouted “oh, come on!” at the screen on many, many occasions.

But I still really really love the show and the characters. It’s just too charming to resist. It’s like that coworker who you realize is ok at their job but not as great as everyone seems to think they are, but you still hope they never leave and always sit next to you in the break room during lunch. That makes the show sound worse than it is–I just meant that if you want to nitpick at it in terms of plot devices and realistic abilities of the characters, there’s plenty there to do that. But you won’t want to nitpick because you’ll love it. Because it’s fantastic. FANTASTIC.

  26. betsymore +20

“I NEVER KNOW WHO THE MURDERER IS, I CAN NEVER SOLVE RIDDLES OR GUESS WHO THE MURDERER IS IN A MURDER MYSTERY AND IT MAKES ME FEEL MENTALLY INADEQUATE”

    same

    1. Mrs_Peel +16

I have terrible facial recognition, so it’s even worse– a lot of the time, when they finally reveal the killer, I go “Wait, who is that guy again…?”

      1. Ethylbenzene +6

That is one reason why I gave up on Pretty Little Liars. I could never tell if people were supposed to be new or some kind of throwback plot twist.

      2. Apollonia +21

If there’s a lot of middle aged white guys involved, forget about it. I literally can’t tell them apart. I’ve been binging scandal and I have no idea who any of the people at the White House are since they all look identical to me.

      3. caatness +3

Watch while mildly drunk, is my recommendation. We started watching this show on in-house date nights with champagne. It makes the show much more confusing but pleasantly so.

    2. KatPruska +11

I can solve British and American productions via casting (“they would NOT have hired so-and-so just to be a charming nice guy without any dark side” and usually I’m right), but I am entirely lost when it comes to the Australian acting world. I appreciate this so much, because I’m not taken out of the story when I don’t recognize a single person.

      1. maccrocodile +11

My friends and I have what we call the Law & Order principle. It holds, especially on the original L&O series, that if you recognize someone the police are talking to, that person will turn out to have done it.

So the Christmas episode, where they flashed back to see Phryne’s uncle played by John Noble, I was very confused, because surely John Noble didn’t do it, but he’s the first actor I’ve recognized on this show.

Well, except Aunt Prudence, whom I recognized as the nurse from Romeo + Juliet.

The point is probably that the L&O principle is not really applicable to all murder mysteries, and actors recognizable in American productions might not be as recognizable to Australian audiences.

  27. lmdunc +85

I have gone from shouting at the TV to touching Phryne and Jack’s heads and physically pushing them together.

Sometimes I just cackle “Oh Phryne, I love you!” It doesn’t even have to be during the show. It can be any time, day or night. This show makes me proud to be a woman like almost nothing else.

    1. Judy Dove +2

yesssssssssss! LOL I’m sure if I’d have been born in that era i would have BEEN Phryne!!! At least I hope I would have!

    1. greyduck72 +10

Yes, yes you should. It’s a period-piece murder-of-the-week sleuth show, like a Poirot type thing if Poirot were a stunningly stylish and clever woman, and it’s like your standard charming-hero-gets-the-girl-of-the-week only it’s this clever woman so the trope is both subverted and REVELED IN and it’s hilarious and glorious and wonderful.

I’m a guy and I am loving it, though I think the Montparnasse episode was clunky as hell (characterization a bit out the window?), and so far (I’m 1/2 through the first season) there’s a strong “ethnic group of the week” thing going on. I’m here for Phrynne making Jack’s head swim. They are an absolute joy to behold, together.

      1. fcjaugusta +4

The ethnic group of the week thing drops off after a while. I kind of read it as the writers’ attempt to bring some diversity into what you would otherwise expect to be a super white cast (which turns out to be true after they stop doing ethnic group of the week), but it’s a pretty clunky solution.

        1. viviennestreet +2

The series is adapted from books (I’ve gotten through the first seven or so, thus far). Each episode gets its general plot from one book, so the ethnic-group-of-the-week thing is less a decision the series writers made and more a function of trying to distill the complex plot of a book into an hour of television.

So, for those of us who have seen it, can we talk about Season 3? And that last episode?

    1. Ethylbenzene +27

I especially want to discuss Dot’s perfect wedding. Her dress was perfection, the whole thing was perfection, oh my gods.

        1. sredni vashtar +15

Bert & Cec as bridesmaids = A+++, but am I the only one who felt it was really weird that neither of their mothers was in attendance? At LEAST once an episode one of them would bring up their mother and how she felt about the upcoming wedding and then…they weren’t there? It kind of destroyed my suspension of disbelief! If there’s not a subplot next season about the two old ladies being angry about not being asked to the last minute elopement then I won’t know what to think.

          1. Ethylbenzene +9

IDK, it kind of made sense to me after both moms had been such jerks about everything that the two of them decided to just cut them out of it and have a wedding full of people who were supportive and not going to make a big scene about people going to hell or whatever (this MIGHT be something I am sensitive to/about!). I feel like there might have been even a small amount of conversation about that? I have yet to rewatch the third season though so I may be wrong.

      1. livia +2

Yes, but where were Dot and Hugh’s families? It felt very awkward to me for them not to have been there too.

        1. Unreadaethel +15

          *payoff, damnit.

And I mean, he pulled her manfully into his arms and all, but I require more decisive action and pent-up sexual energy from our heroes. Honestly.

          1. Thujaplicata +10

The manful arm pulling into was indeed lovely. But I too require more action (and fewer clothes).

          2. msinterpreted +12

My theory is that they’ve been having sex all through season 3. Their interaction is much more meaningful. We just don’t get to see it. (Teases!) But yeah, I NEED MORE PHRYNE+JACK.

          3. Thujaplicata +9

But he’s a professional and he doesn’t want the commissioner to fire him, so he has to pretend they’re still all tension and no sex.

          4. Aparna +8

He seemed quite happy, for an octagon of cheekbones and sorrows, compared to previous seasons.

          5. Unreadaethel +18

I think the restaurant kiss from s1 might actually have been more satisfying to watch. C’mon, you crazy kids, I’m going to need you to live up to your full potential here, re: sexual dynamism.

        1. Unreadaethel +11

It melted me as well, but the kiss was not sufficiently explosive for me, her father’s presence notwithstanding.

    2. Thujaplicata +34

Can I just say that although they may have tried to write Phryne’s dad as “loveable scamp”, I do not want him to make it back to England. I wanted Cec and Bert to talk to a few of their more radical red ragger friends and have him tied to heavy things and dumped off a pier somewhere, never to bother the Fisher ladies ever again.

      1. msjinxie +9

AGREED. I’ve read all the books – they are delightful, in their own way, but best to consider them as totally separate from the show. Most of the time I’m able to keep from comparing book and tv but the way they’ve written Pop Fisher in the show has driven me bonkers. Wait, actually, the fact that we see so much of him AT ALL in s3 drove me bonkers.

        1. Thujaplicata +9

I don’t like the thing where they try to have an overarching story for the whole season (I wasn’t a big fan of the creepy predator and Janie thing either), and Pop Fisher is seriously the worst. I will accept no positive thoughts about him at all.

          1. Ethylbenzene +11

AGREED, I do not like that man. ALSO that whole Egyptian guy storyline’s ending was SO annoying. They built him up to be this supervillain for so many episodes, then it turned out he was just kinda this crazy guy who wanted to be a pharaoh or something.

          2. adoptraya +6

Weeeeeell, part of the whole wanting to be a pharaoh thing is that he kidnapped and killed (and maybe molested? I was never clear on that) numerous young girls, mostly from poor families so that their disappearance would be less likely to be investigated. So definitely still a supervillain, if only because he so knowingly exploited a group of already-exploited people.

      2. viviennestreet +5

I was not aware we were supposed to think of him as a lovable scamp! I mean, that’s obviously what he thinks he is, but I read the whole thing as Phryne kind of trying to protect her mother? Like, she knows her dad is awful and she wants him far away from her own life, but her mother seemed to still want things to work out. (Her mom wasn’t like, oh look you’re in Australia when I thought you were in London looking for a house for us I’m divorcing you–no, she only threatened divorce if he didn’t come back.)

    3. KatPruska +17

Does anyone else wonder what the hell happened to Jane? I felt like the time line this season was meant to be pretty short, so I’m going to just assume she’s still off on her school world tour trip or wherever she was going, but I don’t think anyone mentioned her once, and that seemed odd.

    4. adoptraya +11

I think that Season 3 kind of jumped the shark.

Also, I submit that Phyrne/Jack smexual tension was the hottest, most UST-y in Season 1. (When they were doing the costume-ball thing in the last episode, there was so much sexual tension that I had to pull a Jayne.)

      1. Thujaplicata +6

I agree that season 3 felt a little flat in a lot of ways. However, I adored the interactions between Dot and Hugh.

        1. adoptraya +11

I honestly couldn’t keep the thread of the mystery-plot in a lot of the Season 3 episodes. Now sure, some of that is because I don’t understand Australian accents, but a lot of that was because many of those plots were pretty slapdash and badly written.

My un-favorite was the episode that ends on the airfield with Phryne pretending to be Bert’s Russian girlfriend. The antagonist drives up to shoot her, but then suddenly there’s another car-ful of…communists? airmen? random dudes? And then Phryne is chasing one guy down in a plane and Jack is (rather unattractively) riding a motorcycle? It was such a clusterfuck of weird, unexplained plot-holes.

          1. Thujaplicata +9

I noticed that none of the episodes in season 3 were actually based off of Kerry Greenwood’s actual novels, so I’m thinking that was a major factor in how off the rails a few of the episodes got.

          2. Girl in Sydney +4

I didn’t know why they needed a plane and a motorcycle to chase a man on foot?

The action scenes were never up to the mark and now the writing of the mysteries is weak and illogical.

    5. viviennestreet +23

That episode where the photographer caught them together and Jack was ordered to stop working with civillians–AND HE’S SO FAR GONE he just makes her a special constable and they go on with their lives <3

  31. Prawns +30

WHY ARE YOU NOT LICKING EACH OTHER’S FACES?!!!!

KIIIISSSSS… KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS *throws a pillow at the tv*

  32. fenixdawn +103

Ok, wait. Surely I am not the only one who enjoys the unfulfilled sexual chemistry between Phryne and Jack because it frees up Phryne to spend her free time and unrequited sexual energies banging random hot guys she meets during cases…?

    1. nicolescchung +46

I enjoyed it for a while but now I just need them to do it. The thing is, I think Phryne would need an open relationship and that’d never fly for Jack.

      1. fenixdawn +9

This seems reasonable. I have not gotten to season 3 yet, so perhaps my patience has yet to be tried.

      2. egret +9

Not to spoil the books, but you are absolutely reading her character right. I love, love, love those books, and have been reading them for years. I used to pay huge amounts of shipping to get them from Australia before they were published in the US! The tv series is awesome, too, but it is like an alternate universe that is true to the characters but warps the situations. Jack has a very different life in the books; Phryne doesn’t.

    2. ClickityCat +11

I’m coming late to this conversation, but glad somebody brought up the fact that Jack is not the only guy Phyrne likes! Also, I don’t even want to see Phryne/Jack get together, because they would break up. They should just be good friends who appreciate each other, maybe in a ‘more than friends’ way once or twice, but it seems like the show is building towards this very standard, very monogamous, happily ever after that makes no sense with Phryne’s character and would in fact make her miserable. Maybe my perspective is too skewed by the books.

  33. maccrocodile +18

I just finished season 3 last night, and I demand more.

No, not demand. Humbly request. Please. Insistently.

    I require additional seasons.

    1. AnnaElizabeth +2

There are books! By Kerry Greenwood. I know it’s not the same thing but it might slightly fill the gaping hole of NEED MOAR PHRYNE. Like, 20 books.

      1. maccrocodile +1

I’m not much of a reader (a sin around here, I know), but I might find it worth my while to make the time for these books.

      2. PoisonChalice +4

I’ve just started the books, but they not speak to me in Nathan Page’s voice, and that makes me sad.

  34. clockworkprofessor +15

We are working through Series 3 on Netflix after hoarding the last two episodes of Series 2 for nearly a year. So many things to love about this show–the clothes are just the start! (Better than Downton, as far as I am concerned.)

  35. ZevNV +4

I just started watching the show this weekend, with my husband and our friend, and I am so damn excited to yell ALL these things at the screen.

  36. typewriterandgramophone +38

I bought a tweed hat so I could look a little like Mac.

So many shows I want the main woman to dump the main guy, but this one- I know she has to be free, but I just want them to be together.

Also, how does Dot have long hair but get it to look like a bob? I need to know for reasons.

    1. blushingflower +11

Basically you put it into pigtails and then pin it up. If you google “fake bob” or “how to make long hair look like a bob” there are a bunch of videos and step-by-steps.

    2. imeldaevans +3

Also there is a thing you can get that rolls the hair up so you can tuck it into a bob shape. They were big in the twenties when it was still a bit scandalous for women to actually cut their hair, but it was fashionable to have a bob. I saw one used at a demo for doing historical hairdos, which was fascinating. There are people who specialise in that kind of thing for vintage photoshoots and the like. If you are interested in doing it seriously, you might want to see if there are similar peeps near you!

  37. grumblyqueer +59

Now, I know that it’s supposed to be “make one mouth with your two mouths” as in urging them to smash faces, but “make two mouths with your one mouth” also sounds very Mallory and terrifying,

  38. blushingflower +13

I just started watching Miss Fisher this weekend so I am not very far in, but I don’t really understand the whole Phryne/Bert/Cec thing. Like, they were the cab drivers who picked up the girl who had the abortion and she seemed thing they were good dudes, and they helped her catch the butcher doctor, but I missed how that meant that they were her hired hands for life.

      1. greyduck72 +13

I think that’s the long & short of it; IIRC there’s a throwaway line in the first episode mostly to the effect of “oh by the way I’m kind of keeping you on retainer and your cab is now paid off, welcome to my crew.”

    1. redheadedwolf +11

That confused me too! I was baffled/amused by how easily she just collected people.

    2. drashizu +7

Me too! After 3 whole seasons of them hanging around her house even though they don’t seem to live there, and doing what she says, I’ve mostly just accepted it, but I remember being perplexed in season 1 when those two random cabbies from the first episode… kept coming back? And apparently never felt like working and picking up any customers and ate Phryne’s food out of her kitchen? And Phryne was just… ok with this? I have no idea.

    3. caatness +19

It’s a bit clearer in the books. The explanation was indeed a bit throwaway. She does pay them for their work, and also offers her detecting services as well on a few occasions. She decided they were on her team before they came around, really, but they are eventually, inevitably all-in. Because Phryne is a force of nature and not to be denied and also basically Right About All the Things, Especially Hats and Shoes.

  39. phlippin +167

I love that Essie is 45 and looks incredible, clearly, but is also clearly not a 19-year-old ingenue, yet the show never, ever treats her as a “woman of a certain age,” who should be regarded as a joke or a cougar for taking lots of lovers (nor do they imply that she has any trouble attracting hot men of all stripes). This shouldn’t feel revolutionary for a TV show in 2015, but it does!

    1. Adrienne +9

She has a certain ageless quality to her face. Also: she has one of those faces they “don’t make anymore,” if you get my drift, which makes her seem older but not somehow?

    2. CNW +5

In one episode, though, she says she was 10 in 1910, which means she’d be about 29 or 30 in the show, and…no. Why would they do that? So silly.

      1. imeldaevans +6

That is her age in the books, so that’s just being true to the source material. Some people have criticised the casting of Essie, saying that Phryne was younger and Kerry (the author) said that 1920s life was hard on the skin, so Essie looks about right for Phryne and in any case, she was simply the best for the role so critics know what they can do with their unwelcome opinions (or words to that effect). Kerry refused to sell the rights to Phryne until she got producers/directors she trusted and casting approval. Hence Essie the fabulous.

    1. Thujaplicata +50

I want a spin-off series where Dr. Mac solves medical mysteries and makes cocktails for a bevy of adoring lady friends.

  40. teabeey +43

How did you know that I literally finished the second season last night? And am aching to watch the third, but of course it’s not on Canadian Netflix!

Phryne is just so perfect. I simultaneously want her to sleep with every hot dude who crosses her path and also just smoosh faces with Jack already. I just don’t think she can ever give up her philandering ways but I really want lots of Phrack smut. The UST is killing me in the best way.

And I just love every one of the regulars so much. No one has mentioned Mr Butler yet: having a Number of Weapons, always prepared with the right food or beverage for the guest, no matter their station. That man has A Past, and I think he quite enjoys the shenanigans that Phryne gets up to.

    1. redheadedwolf +23

OH MY GOD, MR. BUTLER. That’s actually one of my frustrations about the show — that they named the butler MR. BUTLER. (And I swear they used the same clip of carriages moving in front of the house, whenever they switched back to that scene.)

But yeah, I take my butlers SERIOUSLY (Wimsey and Bunter are my favorite pair), so that shallowness infuriates me.

    2. drashizu +8

I want to know so much about Mr. Butler’s backstory but he is a charming closed book, and this is just making him more mysterious and perfect honestly.

  41. Unreadaethel +56

Just checking to see who shares my headcanon of Mac being a source of sexual awakening for a significant number of Australia’s budding young lesbians.

    1. typewriterandgramophone +4

See also: Betty from “Bomb Girls” and young *Canadian* lesbians, yes?

      1. Unreadaethel +6

I meant Mac in-universe, but yes. I imagine that Betty helped several women understand their sexuality, but didn’t know she’d done it. Mac is very aware.

  42. rolotomassi5 +10

I watched an episodes or two after a night on the town and would occasionally just say, “Baba Dook Dook Dook” whenever Essie Davis was looking particularly fetching.

  43. Reyna +24

MALLORY LISTEN. Next time you can’t identify the murderer, tell yourself that your mind is so sophisticated it can choose to suspend its brilliant mystery-solving skills in order to luxuriate in pleasurable feelings of suspense and surprise. That’s what I tell myself.

Next time I ruminate about how I have NEVER SOLVED A SINGLE RIDDLE EVER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE, not even if it’s intended for small children, I will think of you and be consoled. Clearly this is somehow a sign of mental brilliance, like still using the bunny ear method to tie your shoes. (Another of my seeming deficiencies shared with good company).

  44. polymerjones +13

I like to pretend Phryne is eventually going to awaken to her pan/bi-sexuality when she meets exactly the RIGHT lesbian friend, but also I’m incredibly self-indulgent where this show is concerned.

    1. maccrocodile +28

I was honestly a little surprised when Phryne made some reference to Mac being a completely platonic friend. I think the line was something about Jack’s “old friend” and she said “An old friend like Mac or an old friend like [featured man she had previously rolled around with]?”

I turned to my boyfriend and said, “Is that, like a sliding scale for the amount of sex they’ve had? Because Phryne and Mac have a sexual history, right?” I may have allowed my headcanon take over real canon.

  45. Lucy +23

What I want to know is, are Jack and Hugh the only two people who work in the cop shop? I know, budget, but honestly, Melbourne in the 20s would have needed more than two cops on the job.

      1. bookwormV +27

City South is staffed solely by Jack and Hugh. They investigate every crime! They are always behind the desk! They interview all suspects! (Except when Miss Fisher gets to do it. I shout at the screen most episodes that maybe Jack shouldn’t let her just waltz into the interrogation room and start putting questions to the suspect, but it generally works out well.)

There was that one sergeant who was a Bad Influence on Hugh and who turned out to be crooked; maybe Jack thought it was better just to cut their losses and never have anyone else work there.

    1. PoissonChalice +5

For the same reason that Mac is the only doctor/coroner in the whole of Melbourne. Except for the ones that turn out to be murderers.

This is an ongoing problem in Australia, as anyone who remembers Clive The Ginger Doctor from Neighbours, in the 80s, will attest.

  46. redheadedwolf +12

“PHRYNE that gown looks beautiful on you but is also indicative of a design era influenced heavily by Orientalism!”

    So true!

The show is very fun, but a little too shallow for me to really invest in. (It drives me crazy that they named the butler Mr. Butler.) I only got a bit into S2 (after S1), though. Still, it sounds like a great show for watching while sick.

  49. frewfish +20

YAS, all of this, especially the part about making your mouth one mouth…

I knew I would love this show as soon as Phryne snapped the case of her diaphragm shut, and smirked “family planning” at Dot.

  50. takefountain +40

Phryne’s glorious example of guilt-free brilliance and self-indulgence (especially in the books she is constantly treating herself to the best tea and coffee served in her beautiful house and taking long hot baths and glorying in the dresses she can buy herself) is truly inspiring (even if Bert and Cec DO have a point about capitalism, Mallory is so right about how appealing this show makes the hot bath of compromise seem.) Self-care, badassery, and a vibrant sex life. She’s the best.

  51. lizzy +11

YES! This show is the best. I want to be Phryne Fisher. She’s my hero.

And, for f***’s sake, put that poor Jack Robinson out of his misery.

    So, let me have him.

    Pining. So much pining.

  52. Echo_fish +2

I love this! Although I’m not sure what the music is that plays when Jack is comically frustrated with Phryne, so clearly I need to rewatch.

Why worry about orientalism influenced clothes when Lin Chung is ignored in every review.

  54. b.m.c.d. +2

Phryne, the richness and extent of your wardrobe is incompatible with the size of your house. There are too many clothes. Not necessarily a negative.

  55. meganbelen +9

I just started this series based solely on the number of all caps exclamations in the article and comment thread. I’m halfway through the first episode and I’m just delighted by it. The clothes! The hats! The wit! Well recommended Toasties.

I’m so sad I didn’t say this yesterday, because I was having such a shitty day yesterday and it would have made me so happy, but don’t worry, I saw it this morning and it still made me just as happy.

  58. PallasPerilous +10

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: Jack and Phryne have the most compelling lesbian romance on TV right now.

  59. Bookwench +4

Nathan Page (who plays Jack) was in another Australian series called “Hiding.”
There’s a fair bit of shirtlessness going on. Okay, it’s not period shirtlessness rather modern day shirtlessness, but it’s enough to get by.

  60. goonerkate +8

Okay, this convinced me, and I spent all night watching the first few episodes. I already Have Some Feelings about this show. Mostly I’m really concerned that Jack and Phryne apparently don’t resolve the ridiculous sexual tension any time in the first three series. That is unacceptable. (Also, the comment upthread that Hugh and Dot are a bucket full of kittens is absurdly accurate.)

Phryne Fisher and The Toast, two of my most favourite things ever in one, how perfect <3

Things I have yelled while watching Miss Fisher (apart from all listed in article, obvs):

THAT’S RIPPONLEA! – when they went to Aunt Prudence’s – it’s a gorgeous National Trust property http://www.ripponleaestate.com.au/ and they’ve got an exhibition of Miss Fisher outfits on right now!

Also, not yelling, but an exchange between my partner and I:

Me: This ‘Turkish’ actor’s accent isn’t very good. I think he’s Australian.
Mah man [walking into room]: :bursts out laughing: That’s MATT ZEREMES, I went to art school with him, I did his makeup for a play :cries with laughter:

We talk about season 3 but I want to know why there were only 8 episodes instead of 13. I feel like I was deprived of 5 episodes which I needed so badly to fulfill my Phryne fixation. Needless to say I love the show and every character in it. Longing for next season and the full length movie.

  70. Jill

I agree with much of what you said. For me, Miss Fisher's Mysteries are one of my all time favorites I have the complete up to date set. This series is as good as Midsomers Murders & Rosemary and Thyme.

thanks for all the witty comments and observations. I share your pain re Jack and Phryne and don’t understand why they didn’t consummate at the end of Murder and Mozzarella when they’re alone and they have a bottle of wine, “Looks like we’ll have to make do with each other”. The kiss at end of Season 3, great but we waited long enough for it. Also the fact that they almost kissed at end of Unnatural Habits and were interrupted at the crucial moment: I said “That’s just wrong” and “I can’t believe they did that to us to my screen”.

  74. Anonymous Viewer +2

I don’t agree that Dot didn’t have any goals before she met Miss Fisher; she had plenty of things that she may still desire, but she’s changed her mind about what ALL she wants out of life. Suffice to say, she may discover the pitfalls of both Hugh and her working simultaneously, while trying to build a home. Dot can indeed do everything she sets her mind to, but children need quality time with their parents too. Dot may run herself ragged being a working mother because it won’t occur to her to lighten her work load (on top of church events). Hugh will be working and continuing with coaching boxers. He’ll likely receive a promotion and have to put in more time, and I don’t believe that they’ve entirely thought everything through. Hugh and Dot are the type of people that would want to be involved parents. Somehow, Miss Fisher would make just the right suggestion to fix everything, but does she have the right answer for this problem? It’s unlikely. Miss Fisher may be a working mother, but she has servants and relatives and institutions to help raise Jane; I’m almost positive that neither Hugh, nor Dot would enjoy this solution.

There are other important issues addressed in the series that haven’t had much of a mention in articles that are equally as important as feminism, like illegal slave trade, fostering children, self-defense for young ladies, odd people being mistreated, employee standards (hiring & treatment while in employ), multi-culuralism and many more. One such issue is courting and marrying outside your denomination and all of the hullabaloo that surrounds that. Any choice you make would affect your whole life and that of your family, because usually there are cultural tensions and hurt feelings, as well as the debate of which church the children will go to.

With regard to Miss Fisher’s promiscuity, I would laugh every single time that she shared that ‘look’ with her soon to be bedmates. I don’t know if it was the producers’ goal to make me laugh in those instances, but the fact that it was always the same scene sequence was indeed funny, which made it all the more hilarious when they broke the pattern. I roared with laughter when the wrestler took his art too seriously and wouldn’t have sex with Phryne. She was so annoyed with him, or desperate to get out of there, that she had a meaningful sort-of date with Jack as the spoils of her bet with him. She practically threw outdoor clothing on and was ready to tear out of her own home, only to have that hat moment with Jack on the way out.

One of the things that I love about this show is that some of it reminds me of the action and the funny moments of “Remington Steele” with Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist. Now all we need is for Phryne and Jack to be shot at while they’re kissing. (laughs)

But it makes his badassery so much more badass, yes? We love Hugh in this house, especially when he is being all manly and confused but still adorable about Dot's feminism.

That is her age in the books, so that's just being true to the source material.

My interpretation of the Orientalism clothing is that the fabric comes from Lin, who is a silk importer. That he’s still involved with Phryne, even if as Good Friends, for tv’s sake. And some day soon, he or Camilla will need Phryne’s help. I can dream.

OK… I just Netflixed all of the show in this past week, yes I’m bleary-eyed. I’ve been shouting at the screen along with everyone else. Unbeknownst to me, there are only 8 episodes in season 3? What? Wait… Why? I’m on episode 8 of season 3! How can this be the last episode until they renew? I’m so sleep-deprived I might throw up from the emotion. JUST KISS ALREADY!!!

On a weird note, does the actress playing Miss Fisher look like she’s had extensive plastic surgery done on her eyes? She’s a stunningly beautiful woman, and I didn’t know if her eyes were that naturally almond shaped or not. No, not judging her if she did have surgery, I have seen other photos of her where her eyes looked completely different.

Back to the main point of my post… OMG KISS! GET NAKED, JUST DO IT ALREADY!!
