Elena Ayala-Hurtado recently finished her year in Spain on a Fulbright grant. She is a graduate of Stanford University, and will hopefully be a PhD student elsewhere a year from now. She has just moved back to Madrid to teach for one more year.

    As I pressed the button on the door of the green fence and waited to be buzzed into my new secondary school, I felt close to losing both my resolve and my breakfast.
