Im so pleased that wine is the fruits and vegetables *and* bread intake! Efficient.

also, we definitely tell the Bergy Bits that they will be eaten by snails if they get out of bed after bedtime. It’s okay, they totally don’t believe us except for right when they’re getting into bed. It’s a win-win situation.

We always did “Don’t step on a crack, or the BEARS will get you.” (followed by growly tickles and much terrified glee) I think I’ll perpetuate that one.

My parents told me that any christmas presents opened before dawn would vanish.

I thought they were probably bluffing, but was never quite brave enough to test the theory.

When I was wee my parents told me blowing bubbles in my drink would give me a stomachache. I believed them until I was 21, when I told my (eventual) husband and he laughed at me.

My parents lied to me in that they made shit up because they were so damn tired of answering all my questions literally all day every day.

This is how I came to believe that:
    – mutton is not from an animal (???)
    – priests get paid from the collections at church
    – bungalows are where bread is made (Nancy Drew!)

Uh…if priests don’t get paid from the collections at church, where does their salary come from? The magic priest remuneration fairies?

ETA: I’m Episcopalian, so the plate does indeed pay priest salaries. This may be different in the Catholic church.

That’s a great question! Well, I was raised Catholic. Maybe it does make a difference.

I think probably the bigger issue (as pointed out to my mom by another adult who wasn’t quite as tired out by my questions) (yet… he got there though) was that she kind of implied that they were taking money straight from the collection dish, instead of it going into the church and then trickling down to them. Like, pocketing singles and quarters.

my Dad was an Anglican vicar – there is one week a year (can’t remember what is called now) when they do take the money direct from the collection plate and split it up as a kind of bonus

i was always told that mr whippy (the ice cream van) was actually the fish van. So whenever we heard greensleeves we weren’t all that excited.

We were also told that if we told a lie our tongue would turn blue. But only for adults. As a result if we were lieing we didn’t want to poke our tongues out when asked by an adult.

I was also told not to sleep with men before I was married because then only a bad man would want me and I would only get a small diamond and not a proper sized one. If you weren’t a virgin you didn’t deserve a big ring.

We were told that any amount of alcohol will instantly cause a hangover.
Also that carrots make your hair curly – which backfired because I really didn’t want curly hair so I never ate carrots.

Bread crusts make your teeth strong. I believed this until I was, like, 12 (I may still partially believe it now. Thanks Nan!).

I came to write that my mom told me the crust of the bread was the nutritious part so I HAD to eat it. It took me too many years before I thought about it again and was like, “wait a second…”
