Toast Points For The Week Of November 21st

This has been a hell of a week. The Butter exists now! Also I have one more reading in the Bay Area — it’s tomorrow night at Pegasus Books in Berkeley, so if you couldn’t bring yourself to cross a bridge to see me in San Francisco, you have one more shot.

Here is all I have the energy to give you today:

See you on the other side of Sunday.

Wikipedia describes the Brothers first by age, then shirt color, then Actual Talent:

Gideon (blue shirt): Russ Tamblyn beat Morton Downey Jr. for the role of youngest brother Gideon. Tamblyn showcased his gymnastics training throughout the action sequences.

ETA: “Professional dancers played all seven of the brides.”

When I watched Seven Brides with an ex we got so bored with the movie we played all the songs at double the speed. It really improves the experience, I swear.

I know that Seven Brides is incredibly misogynistic and a textbook illustration of rape culture and Stockholm syndrome BUT I LOVE IT I CANNOT HELP IT. I could probably sing along with the whole damn show.

(THE BARN-RAISING SCENE. LONESOME POLECAT. THE DANCING.)

(…no comment on The Sobbin' Women.)

Oh, Stockholm Syndrome, the Musical. I watch it with my dad all the time. It is his FAVORITE.

What amuses me the most is that the actor who played one of the brothers (Ephraim) had to leave for his regular job as a dancer at the New York Ballet before the movie finished ending….so in the scene where they're waiting for Millie to have her baby, you see a strange man hanging out with all the brothers, who is the stand-in for the real Ephraim.

I feel it would be remiss not to remind everyone there was a TV show Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in the early 80s–featuring Richard Dean Morgan, Peter Horton, and River Phoenix, among others. Set in modern day. I think there are some episodes on youtube.

Movies like this make me feel like I fell down the rabbit hole of memory…I am sooooo happy when I return
from the time warp of my teenage years. God I hated the smug tone of these patronizing productions. However,
I LOVE the idea of singing this song to Nick’s dog Porter.
