Hello, gentles. I am currently on a plane bound for Los Angeles and I hope to see many of you there! Come by tomorrow night:
The Last Bookstore is excited to welcome back Mallory Ortberg as she celebrates the release of Texts from Jane Eyre.
About the book: Hilariously imagined text conversations—the passive aggressive, the clever, and the strange—from classic and modern literary figures, from Scarlett O’Hara to Jessica Wakefield
Mallory Ortberg, the co-creator of the cult-favorite website The Toast, presents this whimsical collection of hysterical text conversations from your favorite literary characters. Based on the popular web-feature, Texts from Jane Eyre is a witty, irreverent mashup that brings the characters from your favorite books into the twenty-first century.
In the meantime, you can listen to a fun chat I did with the boys at Two-Book Minimum here.

I think I’ll be just not sick enough to attend.
In the process of figuring out if I can make it to this tomorrow night, I browsed the Amazon entry for the book and discovered:
1. A positive blurb from everyone’s favorite woman-focused general interest site, Bustle
2. An original poem-review from our friend, Chris Roberts@Facebook
So I’ll just be over here chuckling to myself all afternoon.
My favorite review is the one that says “I fell laughing off a treadmill reading this book.” Delightful.
Aww, I had forgotten about Chris Roberts@Facebook. Look at him, doing his Chris Roberts@Facebook thing. Lil bunny rabbit.
Aiiiieeee!
We should create a secret sign for Toasties to identify themselves to one another there.
Mallory, please come to San Diego. The weather is beautiful and the traffic is much better.
Seconding this!

I am so excited for Mallory’s visit to Portland on Sunday! Although today is quite rainy here and LA is undoubtedly warmer and drier.
I am coming with my girlfriend from Seattle to Portland to see Mallory talk and also to stay at an airbnb that has ducks and a chakra cleansing room. Because what.
I’m planning to be there! The pressure to pick just the right novelty tee threatens to overwhelm…
It has only just now stopped raining in LA, so you may be good on the weather front. Then again Google says it’ll rain again tomorrow. So, sorry we can’t offer any of that drought-winter sun we had up until a few days ago.
Still pretty warm, though. Enjoy!

I’ve scrolled past this twice, and both times I read, “Hello, gentles,” as “Hello, gentiles.” I might need a drink.
I read it that way too!
