Mallory is an Editor of The Toast.
in as that guy who comments first even though he has nothing to say just because he always feels the need to say something
yeah, that’s a guy
he’s related to the guy who is so excited that mallory acknowledged his presence that he is going to take a full ten minutes to be able to recover even to do such a small thing as order thai food
that is a perfectly respectable guy to be
Once I got in an internet fight with Mallory about the relative sexiness of Aragorn. It was awesome.
i have had two internet interactions with mallory that stand out in my mind.
1) The time she blocked me on twitter because I don’t like the Eagles and I wrote an e-mail asking her to unblock me. She replied with the graciousness of a monarch and I was forgiven.
2) The time I tweeted at her during one of her discussions of finances being like, I think I make more money than you do, and that is not an accurate reflection of our relative contribution to the world. And she was like, you could always give me some! So I donated to the toast.
you will note that in these interactions i am in the role of penitent supplicant to a superior being. this is entirely intentional.
I say this with love: So now you’re being that guy who’s trying too hard to convince us you’re not that guy.
Can we get an addition to the taxonomy? 😉
(aw, you said it with love in consideration of my fragile male ego) 😉
I would argue that I’m being that guy who is trying too hard to openly admit to being that guy in order to have his that-guy-ness at least partially mitigated by the self-awareness of being said that guy, as well as that guy who is so anxious about which interpretation of that guy he is that he launches into a whole paragraph about it.
Say what you will about we That Guys, but we contain multitudes!
damn, i really wish i could say “Thats Guy” here but I don’t think it quite works.
Like “attourneys general”?
“you will note that in these interactions i am in the role of penitent supplicant to a superior being. this is entirely intentional.”
And entirely correct.
The band or the football team? Asking so that I know how to avoid upsetting Mallory.
Omg please tell me your username is a reference to Zbigniew Preisner/Double Life Of Veronique. If so I am DELIGHTED.
Indeed it is! Happy to delight with my obscure username of choice. I like to fall asleep listening to the score of Double Life of Veronique. Is that weird?
What was the conclusion???
I said something dumb and heteronormative about how a girl becomes a woman when she shifts her attraction from Legolas to Aragorn, and then Mallory called Aragorn old and ugly and said that Eowyn was the hottest because #QueerGirls, if I recall correctly.
It was like getting punched in the face by Regina George.
The scene in The Two Towers where Aragorn dreams of Arwen and she’s standing in that blue elfin negligée with all that hair flowing down her back…yeah. I…yeah.
isn’t Aragorn like 110 or something? do the First Men or whatever live forever or is he going to die and leave his kingdom in the hands of an immortal elf? …did the elves marry into owning Gondor? my mind is suddenly racing
Totally long con on the part of the elves, yeah.
(Also, even if you’re dick-inclined, I submit that you can like Aragorn *and* Legolas [and maybe even Boromir] and even Orlando Bloom as Legolas except man, I do not dig a blond of that variety, why the dye job?)
(…annnyhow.)
my Middle Earth nerd friend is telling me that she “gives up her immortality” to marry Aragorn, but that seems like bullshit (she lives 191 more years…? but some other half-elf had live 500 years, and she was already, like, 2700?). and I mean, even if she can just ‘decide’ to die, surely Aragorn can’t be sure that she WILL.
headcanon: property values had collapsed in Rivendell, leading Elrond to bully and cajole his daughter into getting in bed with the heir apparent of Gondor. with the fall of Mordor, there’s a massive real estate boom in the southeast, which the Last Homely House estate is now in a prime position to leverage. whatsername convinces Aragorn she’s going to die with him, but in fact just stands over an old man’s bed as he expires, now the head of a multinational land development conglomerate stretching from Bree, Inc to the Swamp of the Reconsecreated Dead.
#golddiggerelves
If I recall correctly, the elves couldn’t continue to live immortal lives in middle earth because their Age was over and the Age of Man was beginning or whatever, so they all left to Go West and after they left there wouldn’t be any more boats. So by staying, Arwen was committing to live a mortal life because I guess the Age of Man is poison to elves. But they still both lived for hella long because they’re aristocratic white people and Tolkien wouldn’t let his peeps down.
does this mean that the real reason the Elves hated Mordor is because all that heavy industry brought down their property values? (In my heart, the answer is yes)
there’s a 90s Russian novel called The Last Ringbearer that explores the concept that LotR is “history written by the victors” and that Mordor is actually a humanist society, opposed to the religious/mystical society of the elves (“orc” is just the Gondorian word for “male foreigner”). I haven’t read it, but I love the concept, and the Wikipedia synopsis is fucking balls-out insane. it’s got a very Soviet nostalgia “religious west versus atheistic east” ring, which is a bit of a weak selling point with the progressively more atheistic west, but. ALWAYS QUESTION HONORED NARRATIVES. FIND THE IDEOLOGICAL GAPS.
I’m reading it right now! Here’s the link in case anyone wants it:

I actually think that’s clever… But I want to know how Boromir fits in. 🙂

more “aw, that guy-y” then “euh, tha-at guy”
people get down on people people like liking their likes on the liked thing, but it really is a positive feedback loop where everybody involved gets to feel better about themselves at every step of the process. “hey, that person appreciated my compliment! I am not entirely an unproductive internet tubeworm!”
I may also have to change my Facebook religion to “people people like liking their likes on the liked thing”
I would like to join this religion. For me to not like a comment made in response to a comment or post of mine it has to 1) actively insult me or someone I care about, or 2) make a statement so false that I cannot in good conscience risk being thought to be approving it.

that guy
That Guy -> In Your Graduate Program deserves its own entry and dang if I don’t want to write it.
See also That Guy in your law school class. THERE’S ALWAYS THAT GUY.*
*and when your crim law class talks about rape, there are lots of That Guy.
I should mention that I am a law student. And I was thinking exactly about That Guy who made rape analogies all the dang time. In crim law, and whenever else it suited him.
Oh boy, I’m heading to law school next year and wow maybe I should stay at home and scrape thumbtacks against a chalkboard instead? Because That Guy sounds fun.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, That Guy is actually INCREDIBLY entertaining and provides great bonding material for the rest of the group. “Fucking [That Guy’s Name]” became the cri de couer for my friends, and his legend lives on even into 2L year.
There is definitely a certain amount of bonding among those who stare at That Guy while he’s talking in the hopes that he will burst into flames.
One of our notable law school That Guys made an unsuccessful bid for judge about five minutes after the bar. The schadenfreude was great and beautiful.
That Guy from my class just got elected to public office 🙁 He made some paternalistic comment about women’s ability to make intelligent choices re: abortion.
Yeah, That Guy often gets elected to public office. Yay, everything is terrible!
OH GEEZ we totally had That Guy. He sat in the front row. Well he didn’t really sit, he sort of crouched with his feet on the chair, like he was going to spring out of the chair any minute and attack the professor with his profound knowledge. He also chewed gum loudly. I so wish I could remember that guy’s name so I could google him.
like he was going to spring out of the chair any minute and attack the professor with his profound knowledge.
A+, I know that guy.
WAIT did we go to school together? Or are there TWO OF THEM?!?!?
they are multitude
despair
I skipped all of my sex crime lectures and seminars during my crim module, and do not regret this decision one. bit.
(The One Guy in Media Law is driving me BANANAS, with his insistence that paparazzi stalking female celebrities/people speculating on their sex lives constitutes ‘public interest’.)
Ooohh yeah, I also hated That Guy a lot. See also about half the people in my bankruptcy class.
Those Guys in mental health law, including the women, almost broke my spirit.
I can only imagine. I think law school was where I realized that the world really was full of awful people, and so many of those awful people have a lot of power.
DOOOO ITTTTTTTTTTT
That Guy -> in Sociology 101
(really any 100 or 200 level soc. class but that doesn’t quite have the same effect)
That Guy in my Philosophy 105 (Intro to Ethics) class was legendary. Never change, That Guy
There were about 6 of That Guy in my 10-person Intro to Poetry class in college. A few were even women! It was incredible.
the That Guy in my May Term Shakespeare in Cinema class insisted (I don’t even remember how we got on this tangent but there it is) that David Bowie in Labyrinth was not sporting a mullet. “It’s just longer in the back than in the front”, he insisted. “And what is a mullet?” We all said, Jeopardy-style, glaring at him sternly yet mockingly until he subsided (that ONE time) into glorious silence.
Philosophy of sexuality (2nd year level phil). He was there too.
That Guy gets around
At least he’s getting educated, right?
That Guy in my Philosophy of Love, Sex, and Friendship class ranks in the top 3 times I’ve come closest to launching myself over a table at someone.
That Guy -> Adjunct Faculty with Grand Delusions
UUUUGGGHGHHHHHH THAT GUY.
I had That Guy in my class this quarter. He’s of the “free speech means you can say really offensive shit” mindset. It was awkward.
Why are they so ubiquitous? Why?
Most of the men in my current grad program appear to notice that they’re in a female-dominated space with practices generally shaped by the types of discourse you’d more typically find in said spaces and they change their tone accordingly. But there’s always at least one of That Guy who comes flying in in a spectacularly tone-deaf fashion to let everyone know that They Know Things.
This past week, we were all blessed with criticism of online presentations by Mr ‘This Didn’t Work For Me So I Suggest Using A Different Platform So I Don’t Have To Explore Why I Was The Only One Having Issues With Half The Presentations’. Apparently having an alternate solution readily available for his exact problem wasn’t Professional Enough.
That Guy. He comes in so many guises and yet always manages to sound exactly the same.
“Capitalism has been around as long as people were around! When one man bartered one item for another, that was capitalism!” ARGLEBLARGLE
So anarcho-communism’s got it beat by at least a couple, oh, million years, then? If we’re assigning modern economic terms and concepts to the behavior of ancient hominids, that is.
Thanks for this! I just Googled “that guy” from my grad program ten years ago and read a scathing review of his latest book. The review included this l’il nugget of gold: “My reservations begin with the book’s apparent blindness to its own ideological inclinations. Given that this is a book of ideological analysis, complete with a well developed method, it primes its reader to notice the operation of ideology and it is jarring, to say the least, to see ideology so powerfully at play in it. There is a certain inevitability of ideology in any and all writing, of course. But there are decidedly more elegant ways to negotiate the co-occurrence of ideology and its critique than this. [REDACTED] quotes Roland Barthes and Judith Butler in support of his argument, Nietzsche too; he is clearly not unaware of their work and how they managed to do it. Some measure of that sort of critical self-awareness or reflexive irony would have done this book wonders.”
Good stuff! Thanks for the giggle.
I’m just starting off my undergrad and I feel like I just got conformation that my seminar class is free of the really terrible ‘that guy’s when the tutor asked us what womanhood was to us in the feminism unit and the men gently ceded to the opinions of the women in the room and were much more comfortable with womanhood being defined by women
That Guy -> In Library School. That guy who will be your boss two years after graduating because our profession isn’t female-dominated, it’s just predominantly female.
In the UK, the information sector is 78.1% female; men are nearly twice as likely as women to occupy senior management roles. RAGE. http://cilip.org.uk/news/landmark-uk-information-…
Man, I miss the complete taxonomy of That Guys that Miss Alli and Sars did back in the Before Times. This is all that remains: http://djtrindle.tumblr.com/post/66290518156/thir…
I was just about to link to this! We must be equally cool and ancient!
All hail Netscape 4.7!
I had held half a hope that Mallory was also on this page with me about Taxonomy of That Guy from Tomato Nation back in the day.
So glad others remember!
That was my introduction to the concept of that guy. It only took me mayyyyybe 3 that guys before I was nodding my head appreciatively.
I’m still hoping against hope for the revival of the Girls’ Bike Club.
I still have the CD memorized.
That guy at work who won’t stop telling you all about his divorce even though you aren’t friends (spoiler: it’s all his wife’s fault).
I was once the female version of that guy tbh. Divorce flatters no one.
That’s fair. I’m sure we have ALL been that guy in regards to some kind of relationship ending. Sometimes I’m that guy when having a fight with my mom or my husband.
On the other hand, he is also that guy who regularly shares deeply personal information with near strangers, but closes his eyes while telling you the deeply personal thing which makes it even more uncomfortable somehow.
And, a few years earlier, he is that guy at work who never refers to his spouse by her name, but as “the wife.”
I have literally no idea what his wife’s name because I have never heard him call her anything but “my wife”.
I only know my coworker’s wife’s name because he wrote it down on an emergency contact form. He never says anything nice about The Wife. I do not know how they are still married.
We appear to have the same that guy.
Uuuugh. We had that guy. He was a consultant who thankfully didn’t get hired to fill a full-time position because he creeped the hell out of all the women at work. “I took the wife out on Saturday and let her have some ice cream ” is an actual sentence he said.
Ughhhh. My skin is crawling just thinking about that. I do hope his wife has since dumped his ass in favor of ice cream whenever she damn well pleases.
Hemingway! HE’S that guy.
I’m going to claim, as a current women’s college student, that there exists, in rare circumstances…
a female Guy.
oh, we absolutely had and used the term That Girl in every class I ever was in @ Smith, and although the particulars differ widely, the suffocating death of i-wish-i-could-roll-my-eyes-right-now was exactly the same.
Mt. Holyoke here, and YES.
Although I was That Girl in a couple of my classes, and I cringe to think about it now.
Agnes Scott represent!
One of Those Girls created a women’s college problems Twitter and they were all like “when your gay friend hits on you and you’re like um ok” or “When a professor makes a sports reference and the whole class just sits there”
Honey.
We’re probably not hitting on you.
I definitely wasn’t hitting on her. I was too busy watching football and hockey on my tiny dorm TV.
It was me. I was a female “Well, ACTUALLY…” guy. I think I got better. Not sure, sometimes.
A visiting English prof once told us that Amherst students used the word “actually” approx. three times more than anyone else, ever. We were ALL that guy!
I have a friend who went to Amherst and just now reading this comment I went “oh my god yes” because she says actually at least once every sentence
I studied abroad in college with a girl from Amherst who was very very sweet but also managed to work Amherst’s low acceptance rate into nearly every conversation somehow
Ugh, I used to be part of a circle of friends where one girl could talk about NOTHING but how smart she was. When direct references failed her, she’d start throwing around jargon from her major in the hopes we’d ask about it.
We never did.
For sure. “Don’t Be That Girl” is like my first commandment, and every type of That Girl to Not Be was inspired by a particular quasi-human being.
Oh definitely. I’m thinking back to THAT person from my college experience and she was female and she blew all of the other THOSE people out of the water. I recently met a fellow alum who I hadn’t met when we were in school and when I mentioned my major she said “the only person with that major I remember is [name of THAT girl],” because it turns out that the eye-rolls she induced were so powerful that they are the one point of commonality between me and a stranger who studied a very different subject during a marginally-overlapping four-year period.
And to make matters even better, this That Girl dated a formidable That Guy and they scheduled most of their classes together in order to create a megalith of exasperating nonsense that cast a shadow across my college career.
Question: is Otherwise Decent But Keeps Dating That Girl In Various Guises, Thus Forcing The Rest of Us To Endure Her at Parties Guy a type of That Guy? Because…dude, do I know a few of those. (And the female equivalent, too, but my female friends have sliiiiightly better taste, on average.)
I think it’s a step on the way to I Wonder What Happened To That Guy? Oh Right, He Married That Girl And Now We Never See Him Anymore.
Right, with an intermediate stage of Well, But He Clearly Goes For That, So…Vaya Con Dios, Dude.
Vaya Con Dios, Dude, is excellent. Thx so much, I will totally credit you when I use it!
My college referred to them as “that kid.” Pretty much all of us had the “look how smart I am and all the things I know” instinct, and it required the shame of potentially being That Kid to hold any of us back. And yet, shame was not enough to eliminate the scourge.
I was recently complaining to a colleague about a female That Guy student who irritated me even more than the male That Guy students, and concluded that it must be because she didn’t even have the excuse of patriarchal conditioning to justify her Guyness.
I love that the next post under the “uuugh” tag is about George McClellan, who definitely was That Guy.
Y’all I’m currently in a Facebook argument with That Guy, you know That Guy who posts racist stuff that he means but he’s just trolling if you call him on it, please send an extraction team.
That Guy’s representatives on Facebook are legion.
I would also submit That Guy who made a dramatic announcement of why he was canceling his Facebook account.
Uuughhhh I had a That Guy go on a long, long screed the night Barack Obama was re-elected about how America was going to shit and he was ashamed of his “weak-willed” countrymen that incorporated several very vulgar yet ultimately boring spates of swearing.
The next morning he came back on and wrote an even LONGER screed about how “sorry” he was to have “put everyone through that” and that sort of “classlessness” was “beneath him” and “he” “expected” “better” “of” “his” “self” “comportment” okay someone take the scare quotes away from me now because I’m basically substituting them for eye rolls. He somehow became even more That Guy in the process of apologizing for the original That Guyness.
There’s That Guy who posted the original terrible thing.
—-> And then the That Guys who take the original terrible thing much more seriously even than the first That Guy and jump in the comments to make it all even dumber.
I’m just trolling ’em. Fun game: When white guys say all Muslim immigration should be shut down because we can’t tell the bad apples from the good, agree wholeheartedly … as soon as all men give up their firearms. They’re responsible for 92% of gun homicides, doncha know.
Block and defriend with extreme prejudice.
That guy that one time
>That guy, or the other guy
>>Both of those guys
>>>Those guys
What will be best is when (not if) the deleted comment from next week is a “NOT ALL THAT GUYS” comment.
Sweet “marriages of the plants” cover photo, btw.
Botanical history love!
It’s what I’m here in the world for, as infrequently as it arises.
*whispers* …we should be friends…
*nods* …yessssssssss…
WAIT are you the person who sent me a link to your thesis a while back on plants in literature?
OH YES. That was me, I remember now. If you are so moved, you should google me and send me an email. There is no one with this name but me.
I am so moved, but have since switched computers due to a massive hardware failure and your file was among those eaten. But I’m elitistsemicolon @ the gmails, if you want.
Oh, him

Precisely
Oh, God, HIM.
Oh jesus fuck, him.

The main reason I love that song is how clearly Gotye knows the narrator is totally that guy.
my personal theory is that Gotye is singing to an ex and Kimbra is his current girlfriend.
Honorable Mention for Who Has Two Thumbs and ____, This Guy
But where do the dudes fit in?
Slightly OT but is there any grammar rule for when one ought to use the-rhymes-with-thee versus the-sounds-like-thuh? This is something that has always perplexed me in English.
Before vowels and for emphasis? And also, if you are milady-ing somebody and are really pushing it to the max?
Oh God, but: Guy Who Calls Women “M’Lady” And Kisses Their Hands on Introduction, But Is Neither LARPing nor Employed By the RenFaire.
THAAAAT GUY.
We got this back on topic, right quick.
If I had a dollar per incident of this Guy. Oy. (I run in geeky circles. This Guy abounds.)
oh no oh no oh no I knew a few of Those Guys in college and I am so glad that I am free of them now. it always icked me out.
Exactly right. Although you can say “thuh apple,” and I doubt a native speaker would think you used the wrong word, it just would sound a tiny bit less fluent.
Is this an actual rule? I am now trying to figure out the pattern of when I use “thee” and “thuh” the, but of course now that I’m thinking about it I can’t.
I’m sure there are exceptions, but yeah, that’s the pattern. Thuh city, thuh country, thuh house, thuh painting; thee event, thee apartment, thee idea, thee odor, thee unpleasantness.
Weirdly apropos for me since today my friend and I found out that That Guy in my anthro class is That Guy in her math class. It was truly a revelation.
That Guy in your improv class. =(
Close relative to That Guy in your low-level high school acting class who Did Some Acting Over the Summer and now thinks every waking moment of his life is an improv act in front of adoring fans.
wait – the handsy one who insists everything has hugs or the one who is entirely elbows and aggravation and deeply hostile?
I was thinking of the kind like Tyler from that episode of Broad City. So… kinda both!
In a previous life (my 30’s), I was a letterpress printer. I was not very good. I designed greeting cards. One of them was a vintage engraving of a fat, drunk cherub clutching a goblet of wine, astride a wine barrel. And around the cherub, in fancy schmancy font, it said: This guy here, this here’s the guy.
I sold… maybe three? Two?
I still say it was funny, dammit.
I strongly encourage you to make more of these so I can buy your entire stock
WOULD BUY.
That Guy you went out with once who emails you forlornly two years later in a distinctly pining manner.
Who?
…oh.
OH.
Thaaaaat guy.
Man, fuck that guy. Or, no. Don’t. Don’t fuck that guy. Ever.
That guy who either accidentally or “accidentally” copies you on a pining email he sent to an ex he dated before you.
WHAT.
Even better: it was a long, rambling story about a Dave Matthews Band concert they attended!
I feel like if you’re CC’ed in, you are allowed to chime in with questions for the ex.
Heh, or That Guy who manages to get your phone number in the mall food court (go away go away go awayyyy) only to immediately ask you out, rather than waiting to call you later, so you have to reject him to his face anyway, and then a year later texts you “Hey cutie,” lacking even the most elementary attempt at a winky face, so that the text appears on your phone under “Annoying Mall Guy” and you mutter, “oh, jesus, it’s thaaaaat guy” to yourself while blocking him.
Argh! What a that guy!
He’s tinsel on a tree, he’s everything that every Guy should be!
Special sub-category for “Hey! Guy!” yelled at a Guy by another Guy*.
*who is probably drunk and in New England.
I have high hopes for the deleted comments on this, but worry that they may depend on potential deleted-commenters to read the comments in order to become subconsciously aware that they are being made fun of (I subscribe to the theory that this subconscious awareness is the source of at least 75% of deleted comments).
This is what Wittgenstein died for
“Guy” is no longer a real word. At best, it’s pronounced “ghee” like the French name for Guido. But nope, can’t get my brain to read it as a word anymore.

That guy who was going to move to Canada, if X was elected.
He didn’t 🙁
I’m laughing so hard, I know 30 of these guys. Well, in my case it was The Guys that were going to move to Canada if the Supremes OK’ed gay marriage.
I hope my tax dollars go to the construction of an island that we can ship all of The Guys to, after they make these “moving to X if Y happens” statements. Please, yes. Go already.
That Guy who speaks in mansplaining and only mansplaining
That guy makes my teeth sing.

That Guy.

That Guy, you know with the hair.
Oh fucking THAT GUY
Yep, That Guy
As in the guy who tried to mansplain Viking shields to the lecturer?
Yep
