perfect gif is perfect
there is nothing i love more on this internet than matriarchy/misandry gifs omg
Well no need to encourage me any further…
Well this one is my new favorite.
Jesus Lordy, way to give me all the Queen in the North feels!
Sassy club maiden at the bottom there is totally the best. I know that’s exactly the same pose and face I make whenever I’m faced with a long day of emasculating mythological heroes for fun and profit.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news…sassy club maiden is Hercules…the Nemean lion skin and club are signifiers…
Sorry not sorry, but Hercules is the one wearing the dress and spinning in that there picture.
In some versions of the legend, Omphale wore the lion skin and carried the olive wood club while Hercules was all gussied up in lady-frills, spinning and doing other “women’s work.”
Embrace your inner Omphale. Your Hercules looks so pretty.
The prettiest.
Wait, you can emasculate for profit, too? I coulda been RICH!
Oh, my GODDESS, I love, love, love this comment. Want it on a t-shirt.
Flower Crown Lady, teach me your ways!
I concur, these are all very good paintings.
I don’t know art, but I know what Mallory likes.
Art historians, what’s with the guy giving devil horns in the bottom pic? Do devil horns have a pre-death metal history?
It can also mean that you’re making fun of a man who’s been cuckolded. Not sure which is the case here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_of_the_horns
Emby nailed it, that is a nun giving the gesture and that is the classic cuckold sign, which is a common combo in paintings from from Renaissance Netherlands and Italy:
THE CUCKOLD GESTURE
The Cuckold Gesture: Uocchio e maluocchio: This is a variation of the “horns” hand gesture that is reasonably common in Italy – and Naples in particular. The hand is held up and the fingers are extended as shown. The wrist is swivelled back and forth. In Naples it it is usually used by women to a insult a man and implies that he has been “cuckolded” or in simpler terms – his wife (girlfriend) is having an affair. Shown by one man to another it is considered very serious “Fighting Talk” and is one of the worst hand gestures that can be made. Its inappropriate use will usually result in physical violence. http://www.aquiziam.com/body-language/hand-gestur…
I love that. “Its INAPPROPRIATE use will usually result in physical violence.” So if you use it to a guy whose wife (girlfriend) genuinely is having an affair, he will just shrug his shoulders in an “aw, shucks, you got me” kind of way?
It’s a fair cop.
Back when I was young and foolish, I went to a renaissance fair and saw a dude walking around wearing a helmet with horns coming out of it. Given that it would have been historically inappropriate for him to be a Viking, I assumed he must be a cuckold and entreated him to look to his wife.
At first he didn’t get it at all, and then it got ugly.
Art historian here and emby and alger are correct: I like to remind my art history 101 students of this, and tell them to not make ‘bunny ears’ over someone’s head unless they have been up to no good…. Also, think about what bunnies are known for…
The horns usage in metal comes from Ronnie James Dio, who said that his Italian grandmother used it as an “evil eye” symbol.
As a spinner, I heartily approve of that first painting.
Whereas for me, this is just like when the cat* tries to play with the drop spindle.
Yes, you’re an adorable rascal, but I’m trying to craft here, stop grabbing the spindle, omg.
*and since dude is wearing leopard print, he is clearly an annoying, but adorable kitten
I am completely “lady in robe, nice, mostly naked man, awesome, DISTAFF AND DROP SPINDLE WOOOOOOOO” at this painting.
Unofficial Toast motto right there.
“It’s so nice that Dave’s got a real job now as a master craftsman’s…assistant, I think he said he was? Much better than that bodybuilding nonsense.”
would Gentileschi’s “Judith Slaying Holofernes” take this too far?
It could function as a nice little reminder.
I was wondering the same thing.
Actually I think Judith slaying Holofernes could be its own post – in order of convincing beheadings.
We did that once, long ago!
When you say tempting things like that, For the Good lord’s Sake, PROVIDE A LINK!
P.S. Please.
Or “Cleopatra Trying out Poisons On Her Lovers” ? It is a real painting really it is. Sometimes called “C. trying out P’s on Condemned Men” but I like Lovers best .
All lovely, but #2 is veering toward tentacle porn in a way I find discomfiting.
Number 3 is clearly a masterpiece, perhaps the finest painting of all time…
I agree, who is the artist?? I LOVE it
Emile Levy!
I need WAY MORE information about this painting and Google is holding out on me.
The chap in the first one certainly gives me…feelings.
Wonderful. Except how many toes does number 5 have on her right foot? Because I think I’m counting six and it’s kind of weirding me out.
Cannot unsee.
Yup, definitely seeing six. Also, her big toe is remarkably thumb like.
These paintings are unrelated to each other, yet I have identical feelings of smug amusement about each! Art is so mysterious and good.
The club-wielder in the last one looks like a party guest who’s been told to hit the pinata but has no idea what a pinata is and is too embarrassed to ask. “Maybe it’s a creepy velvet-clad rafter baby? But wait, the nun is pointing at this mustache guy here…uh…”
hmm I think I need to get myself a cape made out of an entire lionskin for my next birthday.
I like to think that the male nude statue in the background of the fourth painting is what became of the last Man who failed to please Ms. Flowercrown over there.
Miss Thing is working that pink dress in the last painting!
This was me in all of my critiques for the one art history class I have taken.
Three pouting men in pretty pink negligees! Today is my lucky day!
#3 is my favorite and also clearly I need to model more of my life on Circe.
is the first one morrissey?
I was thinking Robbie Williams, but Moz works too!
I thought the EXACT same thing, and raced to comment– I was even happier to find your comment here
I am concerned about the thyroid health of the woman in the second-to-last painting.
#5 looks like she’s guiding that gentleman’s head towards a very specific area she’d like him to pay attention to.
I mean, he’s gazing toward it with rapt attention, so I’m not sure what else could be going on here.
#3 is femdom, y/y?
File Under: While You’re Down There
i have #1 as my phone’s lock screen, and i have been responding to inquiries about it with a shrug and a “i don’t know, there’s just something about it that speaks to me.”
#1 “Yes just like that, stay there. It’s so nice to have a weaving assistant.”
Femdoms in Western Art History
guys, it’s my birthday, and this is my gift from the toast!
Happy Birthday to you, indeed!
Oh, my GODDESS, I love, love, love this comment. Want it on a t-shirt.
Remind me why people/the kink community don’t get all excited about Omphale and Hercules again?
